ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: Castlevania Aria of Sorrow picture removal
« on: August 08, 2015, 09:34:00 am »
I used palette Editor Advance, but since that's just colors, when i relaced everything with 0000 the pics were all black. Would I use a different program? Tile Layer maybe? And yes, that's all i want is to remove the pirtraits entirely.

I have also began to try to edit the game script. I found the dilogue in a hex editor and when i type over it, i dont have much free space to work with. Any advice on that since you seem to know your stuff? Thanks again (and sorry for the late reply).

Newcomer's Board / Castlevania Aria of Sorrow rewriting game script
« on: August 07, 2015, 09:45:36 pm »
I'm currently wanting to rewrite the script for Castlevania Aria of Sorrow to make it a bit more fresh. I'm reading the getting started and all the documents involving hex and table generating since I haven't dove into text editing yet. As of now, I've only done some palette color changes. I do have a few questions that I haven't found answers to yet:

1. I would imagine that every game is specific on where the dialogue is located and how it is stored. How difficult would it be to locate the starting and ending points of the dialogue and extract it?

2. Assuming I can even locate it and dump it, I know I only have a limited amount of space available to change the script. Do I have to keep it down to the letter to occupy the same space on the rom, or do i have a little wiggle room if I wanted to add more dialogue?

3. Lastly, I want to remove the character portraits from the dialogue boxes when they are speaking. How would I go about that?

Anyone with advice or experience, I would greatly welcome it!

Changing some colors around to make Soma look like Dracula and Julius look like Richter and Gabriel.

Currently trying to remove the character pictures that go along with character dialogue. That would fall under graphic editing, yes? I figured that would be my best bet since there isn't a "transparent hex" color. I eventually want to rewrite the script as well but that's a topic for another day. Any suggestions regarding the picture removal? Thanks much!

What if I didn't want to change the gameplay but just the sprite itself?

ROM Hacking Discussion / Castlevania Circle of the Moon Sprite Swap

What utilities would I need to (in this case) swap the character sprite of Nathan with the sprite of Hugh in Castlevania Circle of the Moon? Is it even doable? Thanks much.

Newcomer's Board / IPS URL?

Hi. I've made a few IPS patches and was looking at the submission form. Could someone suggest somewhere to post the patches so I can put the URL in the description? Thanks much!

Newcomer's Board / Almost done with colors. Want to move on to script.

If I get around to it, I'd like to rewrite the script in Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance. I'm not trying to change the order of any of the conversations, I just want to change the dialogue itself. How much of a headache would that be? Any suggestions?

007F (blue) is the color of the outline of the sprite that I am trying to make disappear. I have found it in Advance Palette Editor, but not sure what four digits to input to make it transparent. Obviously, I'm new to this, so I'm still trying to get the hang of the terminology... :-\
Thanks for the understanding.

What is the 4 digit hex code for a transparent palette? Does that make sense? I'm trying to take away an outline on a sprite. Thanks! I'm also having so much trouble locating a specific palette with this outline. I've edited sprite after sprite with no trouble, but this one is a pain to find! When I finally find it, I'll be able to remove it!

I'm Caminopreacher. I enjoy classic rock, classic games and classic cars (had three El Caminos).
I am a HUGE Castlevania fan. I got into it a bit late, but since I played Dracula's Curse, I have
beaten every title. My children WILL play the older games so they will understand and appreciate
the privilege of being able to change jumping directions in mid air...Old games made you commit!
I digress. I'm currently working on changing Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance around. I love the
gameplay, but the sprite coloring (especially the bright outlines on the two main characters) make
it look likt they were literally copied and pasted from something a different game. Also, some of the
dialogue are painful to read. That can be partially blamed on translation, but I'm hopefully going to
edit the entire story eventually. Just messing with Text and palettes, not getting into changing game-

Currently changing Harmony of Dissonance bit by bit. I've edited the color palettes of the characters for the most part. As much as I love the game, the dialogue is cringe worthy. What utilities would you recommend if I wanted to edit the text in the game. How difficult is it to do for a beginner?

Thanks! I've been using APE and HxD Hex Editor with my VBA. If they share a palette, how do I go about rearranging them? If they weren't the same color, I could just change them manually depending on their address. Not sure how to since they're the same...

Newcomer's Board / Rom Palette Question

I've been editing palettes in Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance. I changed Juste's coat color, but apparently, they use the same color combo on the Hearts. So I now have a dark blue coat and dark blue hearts coming out of candles. Is there any way to fix this?

ROM Hacking Discussion / Hex Editor Issue?
« on: October 12, 2014, 06:08:54 pm »

See link for pics.

I've read the all of the guides and I'm sure its something VERY simple that I'm missing,
but When I go into hex editor, it says it can't find the string of code that I'm inputing directly from Memory Viewer in my Visual Boy Advance. I've already done quite a few edits, but some specific colors, Hex Editor just can't find (it finds the initial color I'm looking for (007C) but once I enter a few more colors, it says it can't find it).
I'm using Palette Viewer, OAM Viewer and Memory Viewer in my VBA to find the specific colors/adresses ect., loading the right ROM, using HxD Hex Editor and APE Utilities.
I hope the pics help. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I edited Maxim and had no trouble.

EDIT: I made a backup of my rom and just to see what would happen, I "replaced all" of the 007C's with the color I wanted. Boy, did that screw the game up...I knew it would, but the kicker is THE BLUE OUTLINE ON THE SPRITE WAS STILL BLUE! Makes you want to tear your hair out....
