Huh, I missed this before. I thought people regarded FFIV PSP as the best version.
An anonymous hacker already knocked at my door tonite and we kept discussing for like 12 hours. Gave him my blessing, all the tools (including stuff not present on Github), instructions to setup the environment, and some hacking directions. I'll also be assisting him whenever he needs a hand with technicalities. So yeah, a trustworthy person has been finally found. Don't know how long it will take him to fix the remaining issues, but I'm sure he's capable.
I always disliked son of a submariner. Other than that and a few other minor things, I think this might be the definitive FFVI translation and hack combo. Nice work. Now. In retrospect, as far as the actual game is concerned... eeehh hasn't aged that well for me.
Seeing that I just want a "standard" translation with its dialog/storyline not mangled like JRPG translations of the 80s/90s typically were while using modern conventions for items/spells/enemies (especially for series whose later games got proper translations), I guess it's not for me then.
That's one of the main reasons I feel that putting a kind of "charm" translation would be needed. Because when I played the fan translation of FF5 and the original Chrono Trigger translation (the one that I managed to play before it got taken down by Square-Enix's cease and desist), I feel like that parts of the translations...well, they just felt empty and kind of flat.
I'll go into more detail when I create a Puyo Puyo (Mega Drive) translation topic, but I recently figured out the compression, so we can edit the graphics.
I've also successfully modified the text routine to display the 8x16 font (it's from Kirby's Avalanche). The only thing to fix is the automatic start text on next line. Time to do some more tracing.
I dare say that no version of any re-translation could satisfy everyone.
Ultimately, all you need worry about is just making it the way you want to with as much consideration for the end users as you feel is appropriate.
You know, I wouldn't mind an uncensored Chrono Trigger translation, though keeping the Woolsey feel.
EDIT: Nevermind, someone's already working on it. My bad
Well, I'm a total sucker for RPGs, so the fact that there's going to be a lot of text to work with isn't what's causing my self-doubts. I agree that personal desire is a big factor in completing huge projects (after all, I did complete two RPG Maker projects, levelled Ultima up to its max damage output TWICE in Final Fantasy II, and completely filled the Pokédex in every Pokémon game made prior to Ruby and Sapphire), but what I'm wanting is confirmation that someone wants to see FF Adventure relocalized, since a commitment of that magnitude, in my opinion, should only exist if there's more than just me who benefits from the results.
Another source of apprehension, I'll admit, comes from the fact that I don't really have any experience with hacking. Sure, there's plenty of tutorials and documentation on how to get started, but I'm still a little nervous, like how your first time on a roller coaster leaves you feeling anxious right as the ride starts.
