Gaming Discussion / Chrono Trigger gets a Steam release.
« on: February 27, 2018, 09:55:16 pm »

Yes, it is most definitely a Square-Enix steam release.  I kinda think it comes from the (quite old) mobile port because of the UI and apparent lack of monster arena, but it didn't have the graphical stuff at all.

Personal Projects / Chrono Trigger Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch
« on: November 22, 2017, 10:15:32 am »
I figure that it’s time to make a thread, now that the patch is completely standalone.  Now that it’s had a major change I think it’s time we got to business with taking things farther.  In its addendum form, there were many lines that couldn’t be fixed due to the older patch.  Now that this isn’t an issue and this patch makes the ROM a bigger size I think this is a good time for a shift in focus.  The idea I want to follow is preserving the original localization, but at the same time fixing most of the errors.

Here’s how I’m going to manage this project going forward: I’m going to keep a checklist here of things to do or things I’m spitballing.  If you have anything that you’d like to see added or any comment about an item, speak up.  If you don’t like something or think I can improve something already added, speak up.  When something’s completed or not happening it’ll be crossed out, when it’s in the RHDN download it’ll be removed.  Speaking of downloads…

Main download is here:
My MEGA mirror, most times this will end up updated first.  The file you want is CTBugfix:!OI91hCTb!07Tsx9_auVpG1ksRFUDgsA
Chrono Compendium wiki link, direct link is pre-Magus name changes:

Script inconsistencies:
Should be good now?

Wrong wording/localization errors:
-Bashers are actually named as Dalton's subordinates, which would fill a slight hole for those questioning his role in the kingdom.  Daltonite from the DS translation fits this fine, but the question is what to do with Thrasher?
-There's also a good reason for changing the name of Bugger to Mouser, because it only hunts the Rats.  There's kind of a theme with the naming though.

Spelling/grammar/text overflow errors:
-Ocean Palace has an indent or two.  I can't seem to find them at this current time.
-There appear to be some random indents in Magus's lines at the first meeting.  Not sure quite how to handle this one yet, but it appears to be the product of something I cannot fix.
-The Oath ending is correct, but horribly inefficient.  The same lines keep repeating over and over in multiple maps, and I hope all the text changes stick.
-Frog, enough said.  I know a lot are against changing him and besides Cross’s accent machine does similar, so most of this will be optional.  I'm slowly going through his text to make sure things use the correct tense as-is, however.
-Give me a holler, I’m sure there are plenty I’ve missed.

Bugs in the original game:
-The HP-to-1 bug had to be reintroduced.
-Incognito/PeepingDoom has 1 HP even after hiding behind the shield again.
-If you're crafty, you can break sequence in the Giant's Claw sidequest.
-So far the biggest ones have been dealt with.  If anyone has any others let me know!

Idea pit:
-A very small enhancement pulled from Plus: perhaps an optional patch that lets Gems work without needing to be equipped after the first time?
-In the Prehistoric party, I want to make Crono's second choice after the first "no" to Lucca match the lines in the first theme-wise.  This is reaching back to things Axiphel had shown me; I had originally thrown it out for not quite being in the same direction I had wanted.  Not sure what to do here yet.

Any really pressing bugs like text overflows will be fixed immediately, but largely I plan to work a while towards a big release instead of pelting the staff with lots of little ones.  Also, if you know anything about compatibility with other patches tell me.  I’ll stick it in the readme.  Currently I've only got Chrono Trigger Platinum, but I'm wondering if any other difficulty hacks are working.

Script Help and Language Discussion / Ye Olde English.
« on: November 08, 2017, 05:30:32 pm »
Hopefully this is the right area.  This isn't exactly the question asked around here. :P

I'm looking to start a patch for Chrono Trigger that fixes Frog's "ye olde english" to use the correct verbiage.  I like to think that I'm actually pretty decent at this sort of thing, but I was wondering if anyone knew a website or other source where I can check to make sure I'm using the correct olde speech all the time.

Gaming Discussion / There's a book about Romhacks in this bundle.

Storybundle is always good quality and cheap, so it's usually worth the price.  Haven't bought a game book bundle until now though.

Gaming Discussion / I found some old Pokemon translation patches.
« on: June 20, 2017, 09:41:18 am »
These aren't really fit for the database, but I decided to throw them up on MEGA for fun.  I was looking through Nuzlocke when I had found that a user had posted some GBA pokemon game translations to english.  The interesting thing is that these are all before the US release (and therefore the JP version is to be used, earliest version possible).  People just got so excited that they beat Game Freak to the punch... almost.  These are all incomplete and have some funny lines.  Anyway, this is all one folder.  If anyone can't use MEGA for whatever reason I can post the original Mediafire links.!eBEBkKbR!Koln42NCRU9qTqrjTlnSFQ

A legend:
LARZ_97: Ruby.  Dialogue stops pretty early, apparently this is a version number?  Not much is really known about this one in general because this is really early, but it's pretty neat.
Pokemon FireRed English: This is made by someone named Jazz, there are different patches with different completion levels.  It's unknown if this is the "last" version or not.  Goes through a few gyms at the most.
LeafGreen Eng Patch: Done by someone completely different from the FireRed patch so dialog is different, it has full Town Map location names.  It is currently unknown by me how long this goes yet.
Pokemon Eme Patch By ExtraOrdinary: Emerald.  This is version 3 of 3.  It's mostly a menu and name patch with some early dialogue.  It may or may not be figured that since Emerald basically has the same plot layout outside of a few events, not much else was needed.

I remember also seeing an early Sapphire translation out on the 'net once, but I haven't had much luck in locating it myself.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Hacking tools in Wine.
« on: March 26, 2017, 08:40:56 pm »
Would anyone happen to have any experience with this?  I've managed to get the TactText part of the FFTPatcher Suite running in Wineskin with dotnet20 and corefonts in the Winetricks, but with Wine having some bugs currently in dotnet40 I haven't been successful with the rest of the lot.  I'm thinking of attempting Temporal Flux (fingers crossed because more dotnet) or Patch Checker next.

Of other stuff mentioned in RHDN, Oblige runs out of the box with no modifications.  Neat.

Gaming Discussion / DoomRL may be shut down by ZeniMax
« on: December 02, 2016, 06:04:47 pm »

This is sounding familiar to a discussion we had about Nintendo earlier this year, but it's worth noting that DoomRL predates ZeniMax owning Doom. o.O

A lot of questions are worth asking about this whole thing, but either way if you want it grab it quick and back it up.  DRL's pretty much been finished a long time ago.

Gaming Discussion / Suddenly, a new SNES9x version!
« on: October 21, 2016, 01:41:34 pm »
After a few years and me being late, we're finally at 1.54.1.  There's some big changes in here like to file association, BPS softpatch support, and byuu's new S-SMP.

Who here's upgraded?  It took me a while to notice due to how long it's been in the oven so to speak.

Gaming Discussion / This new Sonic is something interesting.
« on: July 23, 2016, 11:39:43 am »
It appears to be using Taxman's engine for the whole thing.

I remain cautiously optimistic, it's a pretty neat idea for an anniversary either way.  I admit that it's going to take a lot to pull me from Sonic 3 Complete though.

I've heard three accusations of the fan translation, and I'd like to know from those who've played it if these are true or not before I start playing this version.

1. The movie subtitles aren't very well done, like the timing is off and the size can be odd.

2. It got censored.  I did a little research of this, the translator did revert some names from accusations but not all of them.  I'd like to know if the script itself got a nerf or not or if there's any lines like "she fucks like a tiger" from SNES ToP.

3. There are random gameplay changes in the translation patch itself.  I know there's a separate difficulty and tweak patch, but I've been hearing this about the main translation.  There appears to be a fix floating around for this.

Gaming Discussion / Let's talk mobile ports!
« on: April 16, 2016, 08:47:46 pm »
Some are hit-or-miss like the entirety of Square's career in the platform, some are actually pretty good like Baldur's Gate (arguably) and Talisman, and some are just plain awful.

With Romancing Saga 2's first official localization making it to only mobile, what's your opinion on this?  Is it good or bad to have translations available on mobile?  Do you think it has a hazard in that if it's not updated properly with mobile OS updates and the like, it has the potential to be lost forever?

Personal Projects / [PS1] Final Fantasy Tactics name fix patch
« on: March 28, 2016, 07:30:49 pm »
After wrapping up most of my Pokemon-related business, I decided to dig into this as well as I could!

This little patch fixes and updates Ability, Equipment, and Job/Monster names in FFT.  The goal for this is that the original translation's vibe and original intents are preserved, while making something more recognizable with common FF naming conventions and fixing translation errors.  This means a lot of abilities aren't using the War of the Lions terminology, though some were updated as such.  Some terms have not been changed or have been lifted from other FF games where applicable, mostly the GBA and PS1 eras of FF (for a minor example of what I mean, instead of Hasteja it's Hastega), and I've even delved into literal translations of ability names.

As of now there are three patches, Altered exists mostly for the sake of Swordskill (Stasis Sword etc.) names.  There may be more differences to come as we move along.  No Suffixes uses spell names with the original 2/3/4 instead of -ra/-ga/-ja.  .ffttext files are also provided with all patches for those who might find them useful.

I'm looking to make a minor fixup hack to FFT.  Fix oil, item names, JP scroll glitch, etc..  I know where the tools are and whatnot, but I do have a few questions.

1. I will be editing text but mostly for item, job, and ability/spell centered things with descriptions to match.  Fixing obvious mistranslated items (deathspell, songs and dances), clarity (changing sticks to all have "stick" instead of "rod" in their names for example), updating spell terms (-ra -ga -ja for example, though not completely like War of the Lions does), etc..  Would this impact things very much as space is concerned?  Most of these are probably going to be 1-4 characters difference I imagine.

2. I want to give Meliadoul Power/Speed/Mind/Magic Ruin (for the sake of making her more unique in the face of Cid, and with abilities that don't depend on equipment) and give them all a JP cost, would this effect the Zalbag battle or Meliadoul's job any without modification?  Also, what would be a good average cost?

3. If I gave all Maces a tiny magic boost and enabled Priests and Time Mages to use them, would that make them any more useful?  I'm still not sure if I want to do anything with Bags or not either.
