The way that some of these superheroes survive in the 8-16 bit games is that, even though they, or one can be reduced to low health, it is not completely annihilated. Some are even converted to non-human entities. It's very confusing to understand in visual aspects, but the sprites can be compressed and decompressed to work even in 32-bit or 64-bit graphics.

I haven't seen any legal action against SMBX. It's a not-for-profit fan-game so I don't think Nintendo would get very far suing them.

No, it's called SMWCX (from smwcentral.net), it's a collab of about 100 different levels fans created for SMBX program. Each file is about 500mb each, so I uninstalled it about a day after getting it finally working because that's too large for a SMBW game, and probably full of viruses. I haven't got the courage to install homebrew on the wii u yet.

I tried for a week or so to understand how OAM, VRAM, PPU, and registers work together. A few other members from this site even attempted to help me until they didn't like the way I worked so they demanded I leave them alone. For a couple of graphics the graphic would load partially, and then for whatever reason in a separate routine the remaining part of the graphic would load (this for a graphic less than 1kb). Also, when switching enemy sprites I tried to determine if there was some data about the sprites near the graphic table indicating VRAM size since this information was required to properly switch enemy sprites in the editor. Unfortunately, there was no way to determine (without manually counting the tiles how large the sprite was) and I couldn't figure out a formula based on other known information about the graphic to determine VRAM size....

Such a complicated piece of hardware for being a tiny gray box. I bless the programming lords daily that high-level languages are infinitely easier to work with than hex and assembly.

Actually, I was just chewing on a popcorn kernel, which gave me the idea to post about this thread. I've only made minor changes to some files in Linux. Like I added a couple lines once to a driver to get it to operate properly. I doubt I can make any significant changes to the kernel lol

I've been playing Super Mario rom hacks for awhile now. One of the big advantages of Mario Maker is that there is no frustration on getting the correct version of the hack and the rom for patching. Also, typically hackers have a certain way of designing levels so a SMW hack with 70 levels, most of the levels will feel 90% the same. Here you play the 10 course challenge and they will be from a different maker, and each course could be from 5 different popular Mario games. It's way more convenient to play levels here, than downloading rom-hacks, which many times have little or no review, bad headers, checksums, etc. (I once downloaded a Mario game that required 2 separate programs to be installed first, plus 500mb of free space and the physics were all wrong).

The game is 5 years old I'm sure everyone knows that. Although, Nintendo is strict there is no unofficial release of Mario Maker freeware like MegaMaker or Zelda Classic Launcher.

How about tetris where there is only 2 types of blocks instead of 4 or 5. Or, make it more challenging where there is up to 7 types of blocks.

Snatcher is a mystery solving game, but has shoot 'em up elements. Many sci-fi games include shooters and you shouldn't let them discourage you such as Mass Effect, Destiny, Bio-Strike, Half-Life, and Fall-out.

Other sci-fi examples are Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, and Jurassic Park.

I got a bonus for opening a checking account at a new bank and decided to get a Wii U and Mario Maker last week. They also gave me Star Fox Zero for only $5. I'm kind of bummed there is no exclusive Castlevania or Super Metroid for this system, but sometimes it's better to replay classics than a newer version that is lackluster. BOTW will most likely still be awesome, even if haters will complain that the hype is gone ,and the original price tag :),

I never wanted to get trapped into buying newer consoles anyways for "exclusive" games, and vowed to just update my gaming card when all the next-gen consoles were released a couple years ago.

Sure,
some people are probably just downloading a bunch of new videogames instead of buying them, but I think that majority of people just download stuff they owned as a kid like Mario, Zelda, or Super Metroid and want to re-play without having to rebuy the game at $99 each. I haven't spent more than $20 or $30 on a game in several years. Steam is a great resource for me.

Ps1 controllers have L and R triggers and also select buttons so there is more options on which buttons to assign certain functions.

I'm sure there is probably some subroutine that is executed when pressing the pause button that helps load the graphics into VRAM, or whatever needs to be done to change all the values for a new weapon. I'll try capturing the assembly in a trace-log or something and see if I can find a JMP or JSR (or the Sega Gen equivalent) in the code. I'm not really the best decoder, but I'll take a look at it, and I've never mapped buttons before so I'll try finding a guide online or bug someone on this site. I'm pretty sure one of the buttons on the controller just duplicates another button by jumping or shooting the buster shot (kind of like how Sonic has only one command, but you can jump with all three buttons). So I could re-assign that button to switch weapons in one direction, then maybe down + button will switch weapons in the opposite direction.

I've been wanting to get a Wii U mainly to play Mario Maker, but I'm afraid they will shutdown their servers soon to get these levels, and that would include the virtual console where you can get some games released on mobile platforms. I think the estimated date was supposed to be 2019, where they will most likely re-release the game for the Switch and force everybody to upgrade their systems to continue playing. BotW was also released on this platform, and I'm sure this is a good game despite the hype finally dying down. Not sure I can convince myself to spend $200 or $300 for 2 games though.

BTW the Retroarch genesis plus gx core can eliminate the slowdown completely of this game with its overclock option, it is even playable on Android phones using Retroarch. All we need now is a hack to switch between special weapons with the trigger buttons without having to open the menu.

I'm not sure if y'all are familiar, but since the game was originally released in Europe/Japan it's set for 50hz televisions. Patching the game region to US changes the frequency to 60hz and speeds up the game. There's also a cheat code you can use to get more bullets on screen, and to walk without pausing. The patch hosted on this site also allows SRAM saving, rather than EEPROM which causes errors, allowing you to play the final Wily Tower after beating all 3 games. If any of you have downloaded the multirom set for ps2 soft-hack that lets you play snes, nes, and sega games on the PS2 the Pgen emulator doesn't shade the bosses you have defeated in the Boss Select screen so it's harder to keep track of your progress.

As for switching through the weapons one problem with this is that on the original Sega Genesis controller there is no select button, L or R triggers, and only 3 buttons (A,B,C) on the controller. Also, I was briefly working on this and it looks like the Pause menu is necessary for loading some important function in the background. I was able to hack the RAM to change Megaman's suit (that corresponded to the weapon upgrade) and this immediately changed the suit on-screen, but when doing the same for his weapon it would not upgrade his weapon on-screen. Even after hacking the RAM to give him appropriate weapons you still need to pause the game for it to change the graphics, store all the crap in VRAM, and apply the new specs for the weapon.

There's individual graphics editors for X1-3, plus Rockman&Forte, and MM7 on the SNES that will extract and insert the graphics for all those games. If you want to edit those 3 out of the pack you might go that route to find the editors, rather than trying to edit the playstation graphics. Actually, most of the sites that host the tools are all Portuguese for some reason, but some are in English.
