Sorry for the silence! I'm involved in some other projects right now, but translation is still happening pretty steadily and I'm keeping the reinsertion up to date whenever I can. It's a pretty lengthy script, so it was pretty overambitious of me to say I'd have a trailer out in "several months".

Hey! I am a huge fan of this game. I actually did some work on hacking work on this last year, and was just thinking about continuing.

I dumped what I think is all the written text (battle, menus, character names, stone tablet text), got a reinserter working on most of it, started locating some pointers, and was able to replace the default font with something easier to read.

The subs/dubs question is tricky, I got stressed out about it and stopped. The audio is not too hard to extract - it opens in Audacity with the right parameters. I was just anxious about needing to coordinate work with a bunch of voice actors. I tend not to like video game voice acting anyway, so I would be a poor director.

I will take some screenshots of my hacking work later and edit this post with them. Feel free to message me if you want to coordinate and talk more!

Edit: Here's how it's looking so far:




The small 8x8 font is easily editable, so I just threw in this Final Fantasy one.

The bigger font in stuff like the main menu/bestiary is a system font. I did some ASM hacking to change it from the 16x16 system font to the 12x12 one, but right now it still has the original spacing. I did get the game to read single-byte ASCII instead of SJIS though, so that doubles the space availble. Next step is to either fix the spacing, or just scrap that and make it print stuff using the 8x8 font instead. (And to fix the number/apostrophe display, which you can see doesn't quite work yet.)

Again, it's a work in progress. This isn't the system I usually work on, so I am starting from scratch and learning everything I can.

I usually use this site to look up kanji. Just check the "ignore stroke order" and draw it in.

Sort of an anticlimactic post. I found a very qualified translator, and they've just begun. In the meantime I've finished playing through the game and finished up all of the required hacking.

  • I hacked the text speed to go about 8x faster, so now it's significantly easier to test, and certainly less time-consuming to play.
  • I hacked the intro text to display normally. It was using some sort of ugly custom font I couldn't easily edit, so I just replaced it with the system text.
  • I fixed the horrible pointer situation. I found better ways of identifying pointers as belonging to particular files, so that should cut down on the guesswork and inexplicable crash bugs.

As for other things to do, there is still another image format, but it looks pretty difficult. It is only used in the game's intro, so I may just remove those images and integrate them into the text. I may try to increase the text speed from very fast to instantaneous, too, though that would skip things character portraits being displayed.

But for now I think I'll take a break. My next post will probably be several months from now with a trailer/release.

It's from a game called Possessioner, which is a neat little sci-fi graphic adventure/18+ visual novel/RPG by Queen Soft. In 2035 Tokyo, women are constantly disappearing, then returning possessed by monsters. You play as Alisa, a member of an elite squad that tracks down the possessed women, defeats them and the monsters in combat, and then... subdues them in a consensual but not terribly safe-for-work fashion.

This game looks and sounds so good! Great character art, and some of the most gorgeous and detailed backgrounds I've seen on the system. The FM synth soundtrack is fantastic too. (Here's a song on YouTube)

You spend most of the gameplay exploring the city, talking to people and solving puzzles. The combat is pretty simple, but decently fun, with some fun little animations for all of your attacks.

I've made some decent progress on hacking so far. Here are some accomplishments:
  • All of the system text is (machine) translated and working. That includes all the commands for the adventure segments, combat, and H-scenes.
  • The dialogue file format is pretty easy, so they can be reinserted and expanded without any issues.
  • I've reverse-engineered one image format (.SEL), which is used for all the combat controls and various UI elements. I wrote an encoder for it, and so far all the combat images are translated.
  • Nametags in dialogue wouldn't display ASCII by default, so I hacked that in.

And here are some remaining challenges:
  • All the dialogue pointers, from like 25 different files, are hard-coded into a huge code segment in the main EXE. This presents some difficulties.
  • The intro text has some quirks. All the text is twice as wide as it should be, and apostrophes/commas doesn't display correctly. That'll need some hacking.
  • The intro has some images in a second image format, .CGX, so I'll need to reverse engineer that too.
  • I'd love to be able to increase the text speed. Gotta respect the player's time and all that.

Since I'm just a hacker, I am seeking a translator as well. The script is about 485 KB, and has some significant adult content. You can see the full plaintext script dump here. If you think you'd be interested in working with me on this, please let me know!

P.S. I usually hack for a group called 46 OkuMen, and we are doing just fine! I just thought I'd pick up another project to pass the time while the others are busy handling major life events. I figure this is the kind of project they wouldn't miss if I did it without them.

Additionally, I don't have any secret internal tools for extracting images from the games we've worked on. It's a lot easier to write an image encoder than a decoder, so I've never written one. I've used the replace-the-title-screen method for any graphics I needed to extract for edits, nothing more sophisticated than that.

I'm definitely interested in seeing more Japanese PC stuff on TSR though, so I'm glad you're working on it! I have a bunch of Last Armageddon sprites extracted which I need to put in a sheet and submit one of these days...

Oh, I just found out about another game that came to the PC-98 called Digan no Maseki...

Maybe you and I both read the same thing recently! I am definitely interested in that game, and I'm hoping to check it out pretty soon. I've been finding a lot of these PC-98 JRPGs with WRPG twists on them, like nonlinear plots and meaningful dialogue choices. Would be fun to work on one of those at some point, but quite a time investment.

I really like that thread too, lots of cool stuff in there. Good links to further resources, too.

I am curious about Emerald Dragon, since it was Glodia's biggest success.

Someone is currently translating the PCE version of Emerald Dragon, so that's happening at least.

From what I hear, there is no currently available FM Towns debugging emulator, so that's a big obstacle to anyone hoping to translate games for it. Looks like byuu was interested in translating Emerald Dragon for it, but Unz's developer will not publicly release his debugging version of it. I hope that will change in a few years, since FM Towns seems like the last frontier in this already quite inaccessible field of Japanese PCs.

I just finished my first full playthrough of it in English, and I really enjoyed it. Definitely a nice little surprise to find in the PC-98 game catalog.

Having a few issues running the Patcher.

I give the program the path to the .HDI file but i get the following error.

Hey, could you PM me your log file? It should be in the same directory as the patcher, with the name "rusty-patch-log.txt" or something similar.

Edit: If anyone is having trouble with the patcher while we're trying to fix various issues with it, you can grab some plain xdelta patches here. They're listed as "Rusty Mac/Linux Patches."

Thanks Recapnation, that is a really excellent list. I'll spend some time checking these out. Last Guardian (Anjin) and Dead Force (Fuga System) were on our radar before, but I see some other games by those publishers that are more immediately tempting.

Since the time of kuoushi's post, we've learned of someone working on Tamashii no Mon, so we're not likely to work on that.

Night Slave will have to be another group, unfortunately. As fun as the gameplay portions look, it has some more adult content in it. Despite the fact that it can apparently be turned off, it would be difficult for us to work on it with families and things around, so it's out.

Apparently turning off the eroge scenes in the options also turns off all cut scenes in general, so I can't really work on it even with that option.

About
Appareden -Fukuryuu no Shou- is an RPG from the late stages of the PC-98’s life cycle released in 1995 by TGL, the same developers who released the Farland Story series of games that were among some of the first translated PC-98 games. It features a nicely animated battle system, and a story rich with history and lore from Japan’s past. The game takes place on the Japanese islands and stars Gento, a not-too-bright swordsman who will do anything so long as he gets paid, and his talking cat monster companion, Benimaru. They are given a scroll by a dying samurai and told to deliver it to Edo, but find themselves in the middle of plots to take over the world!

Different Realm: The Eternal Sage (Different Realm: Kuon no Kenja) is something we consider to be a true hidden gem for the PC-98. It is an RPG that was developed by Glodia and released in 1993 by ASCII. The combat is a combination of turn-based and strategic battle systems on a battlefield with no grid, creating a fairly free-form system where you move your characters on their turns, experiment with different formations and line up attacks. The game runs quite smoothly, which is quite unlike many of the choppy grid-based RPGs for the PC-98 system. The art is colorful, and often adorable and funny. Overall, it’s a game we really think is worth introducing to Western audiences from a developer who put a whole lot of love into their product.

About the Team
46 OkuMen was initially formed as a nameless group with the sole purpose of translating E.V.O.: The Theory of Evolution (46 Okunen Monogatari: THE Shinkaron) on the PC-98. Neither kuoushi nor hollowaytape had ever worked on a romhacking project before, but both ended up picking this game and joining together to translate E.V.O. PC-98 and release that to the public. Along the way they met SkyeWelse who had some experience in romhacking projects (with Heroes of Legend, cool dudes), as well as the ability to edit/create translated graphics and everything fell into place there.

If you guys have any questions about what we're working on, game suggestions, or anything related to the group at all, don't hesitate to ask. We're dedicated to the PC-98 catalog currently, and there's no guarantee we'll work on or finish any suggestions, but we're always open to hearing about games that people like. (We also check the RHDN Translation Request List.)

I've noticed in chapter 4 though, none of the combat text has been translated. Character dialogues seem to be in English so I don't -think- it's a problem with the patch. Is there anywhere I can submit a bug report or let somebody know?

Hey, that's pretty weird, we did translate that. I'll send you a PM and hopefully you can figure out what's wrong.

If anyone has any problems, send me a PM on the forums here, or an email to the address listed at the bottom of the readme.

EDIT: Yeah, this is a problem with the FDI patch. (However, the issue is with Chapter 5, not 4.) I've updated the patch on our site  and on here as well.

If you're already a ways into the game but want to play with an updated patch without losing your save file, there is hope! Save files are in your Disk A/User Disk as PC1.46 - PC6.46, for EVO File 1 - EVO File 6. Use the program DiskExplorer/editdisk.exe to open your disk images and move these save files in and out of your disks.
