Personal Projects / Re: Zelda 1 Redux / The Legend of Zelda Redux

Looks like excellent work.

Please feel free to steal from
I think these things were unique and worthwhile to carry forward:

  • I recolored (maybe 5 or 6 of) the dungeons to give them all a unique palette but also make them fit thematically with the type of terrain surrounding their entrance. For example, 5 is brown (mountain), 8 is green (forest). I made 2 purple because I needed a purple one and wanted something weird for the moon-shaped dungeon.
  • It has Link's Awakening graphics like many other hacks but I also retrofit the bosses from their Oracle of Seasons incarnations.
  • Title screen with more recent Zelda logo
  • Candle=Lantern, Ring=Tunic etc.

Modification of Streets of Rage 2 to Batman 66
Playable characters- Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Wonder Woman 77
Leave generic thugs, turn bosses into Batman 66 villains
Change impact effects to POW ZAP BOOM

This is wonderful. Thanks for providing this.

Is there any chance of implementing/providing compatibility with a patch like this: where we get those extra toys but it doesn't have to impact the game?

This whole project makes me want to get a SNES Classic just to replace its SOM with SOMT.

Sigmaecho: This is looking great. If you haven't already, feel free to leverage:

The one not-obvious change I made there that I would love to see carried forward into your hack is the re-coloring of some dungeons.
Many the dungeons have been re-colored so that each has its own color scheme (rather than have 2 gold dungeons, 2 grey ones, etc.). For example: Level 8 (The Forest Dungeon) is now green while Level 5 (The Mountain Dungeon) is brown. Level 2 (The Moon Dungeon) is purple(?).

I also made this change which I thought made sense at the time but I realize the choice between series continuity and preservation of the original is a matter of taste.
A few text changes have been made to the title to make the items match most Zelda continuity (for example: Red Ring is now Red Tunic, Magical Sword is now Master Sword, etc.) No in-game text has been changed.

The Super Mario World MSU-1+ is very much along the lines of what I am thinking, though I agree that some of the changes (music) are more than I wanted.
Then again, I say that those changes go too far but at the same time I wouldn't mind if these got added
and put only in "Top Secret Area".

Or if red & blue switches got power ups, which I recall bothering me.

And I agree the GBA game had some good updates that I would like to implement but into the SNES game with the full-sized screen. Maybe it would be worth collecting some patches into a mega-patch (though I'd defer to Vanya's judgement and talent if he had the same idea).

ROM Hacking Discussion / Is there a best edition of Super Mario World?
« on: January 22, 2019, 04:53:30 pm »
This is not a request for anyone to build something, rather if someone has created (or which hack the community would consider) a "Best Edition", "Enhanced Edition", "Modern Edition" etc. of Super Mario World. Something that didn't make (major) changes to the levels but fixed bugs and added modern features to make a new baseline Super Mario World.

Any hacks come to mind?

Something similar to what was done with these games:
Link to the Past
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy II
Earthbound Beginnings

Definitive Version may be a good thing to feature on this site.

These were made with the intent of having a "definitive version":
Super Mario Bros:
Legend of Zelda:

Here are some others along the same lines:
Final Fantasy:
Simon's Quest:
Super Mario Bros. 3: Combine these two-
SRAM Hack:
Extended Edition:

Here are some actual releases I didn't know existed until recently:
Mario Bros.
Donkey Kong:

Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
