When doing translation (or editing) for a lot of older games, you are greatly constrained by the amount of space available for items, stat names, menus, descriptions, etc. This is probably the largest factor for why certain translations might seem a little "off".  Although the editors/translators may have wanted to go in another direction with the text, they were forced to chop things up to make it all fit.  With more modern games, though, this excuse would fall flat in most cases...

Wow, this is really sad if true. As someone who has translated and edited numerous scripts, I'd be honored if the original company used any of my work to help in creating their own, "official", translation, but I'd definitely want at least a "thank you" in the credits.

Patch has been updated on the D-D website with various edits/fixes.  Biggest of all, resurrections during battle are working again.  Sorry for the wait everyone!

I haven't updated the patch here on RHDN.  Feel free to do so if you have the time.  Honestly, I wish there was a quick and easy way for someone to submit updates, but it looks to be a little more involved than what I've got time for at the moment.

Yeah, as noted in the readme and over on the D-D forums, bun combinations are never as predictable as one would expect. Sadly, it appears the developers missed a few bugs when making the game.

@kerghnox: Thanks!  I honestly don't have a clue when this broke, but we'll get a fix in place ASAP and update the patch. Sorry for any inconvenience.

@patuli: Well when you eat the Century Egg outside of battle...

  I really have no clue what love does...  :( And for the baths... Yes, you can get to the women's side! Keep working out that thumb!

@patuli: Thanks for the info!  I've got good and bad news... Bad news is that the bug is also in the original ROM.  Good news is that it does not stop you from progressing.  You were  accidentally traveling back out of Luna City, but you should have been going deeper to progress the story. Load your save and go in the "opposite direction", and you should be fine.  I'll tell Bongo` about this one, so thanks again!

@TheBeverage: I don't recall the music being any (much?) different.  Have you tried with different emulators? Unfortunately, there is no way to adjust music/sound levels :(

@Tobas: As noted in the readme, remove the header before you apply the patch.

@d0pefish: Sounds like an issue with Retropie.  The game has been tested in Higan, Snes9x, and is now being played by people on real hardware, with no reported problems.  :(

@Joseph Lithius: As for "Heed the Call to Awaken"... Yeah, that took us a while to hammer out.  Over on our forums, you can see all the variations we considered.  I went with the aforementioned choice as I felt it sounded the best of the lot.


The following is more of a response to someone's comments I saw somewhere over on reddit, but can't find the post anymore.  I figured I'd address it here as there may be others who had similar thoughts:

1.  The text speed can be changed from Slow to Fast in the Options menu before starting a game, so if you want faster text, you're in luck!

2.  Just because some of the dialogue/text seems funny or humorous, DON'T assume it is because the translator/editor wanted to insert humor into the game.  The original script is full of this! Mom's attitude of being slightly strict/forceful/etc. is in the original script.  The nurses' dialog being a bit "pervy" is in the original.  It's fine to be critical of this, but don't assume it's there because the translator/editor wanted to make you cringe while playing.  The original tone was kept in order to keep the script close to the original.  That said, of course there are instances where the dialog had to be changed to make the experience more enjoyable, so certain bits of text were changed to flow with the tone of the game (puns/jokes/etc.)

@ ze10: The game has not been tested on an SD2SNES, but it you get the chance to try it out, please let me know how it runs. :)

@Gi Nattak: Not this time, thankfully! D-D has so many projects slated to release this year that they decided to slot all of them during certain holidays for fun. It was pure coincidence that April 1st and Easter fell on the same day.

This is the last game that I will produce/coordinate as I move into semi-retirement, and I'm really proud of the work everyone put into it.  I hope you all enjoy it!

Well done, and thank you for taking the time to update the patch for everyone!  Can't wait to finally give this game a try!

I think that's nearly impossible. It's a great idea, don't get me wrong, but I don't know how much content can still be added to the second disc. Creating new dungeons from scratch, adding new textures for Gears, enemies and scenario, creating new 3D models, creating more lines of dialogue... That would take a lot of space in the CD, wouldn't it? Maybe the game would need a third disc. Unlike FF7, Xenogears almost has no dummied content to remove.

Yeah, I know... But it's maybe not as much of a long shot as, say, a remake/remaster :P

Congrats on the German release!

One day, I still hold out hope that someone will be able to edit this game in such a fashion that they are able to re-create disc 2 in a format more similar to disc 1... I'm picturing more of a Crimson Echoes style hack, but it would certainly be quite the endeavor.

That makes a lot of sense, too, as the French translation specifically mentions the name of one of the developers and not XAKSFX.  I wonder what "extra" they are hinting at, though...  The only bonus materials included in the game are the sound room and art gallery.  Oddly, though, both are inaccessible (already been missed) at the point in the game in which the text displays, so it's a little odd.. I may end up editing this message a little more in the final version so that it won't be so vague.

Thanks to both of you! I feel much more confident in my translation now. Although I'm not 100% on what "Xaksfx" is, the only logical explanation is that this is referring to the hidden "sound test room".
