Also, I think you can make Mario work with that palette if you shift the colours for his overall and his outline, and change the outline color to white instead of brown. It should look something like this:


It's not ideal, but works with the current limitations.

Or he can use my Dr. Mario sprite, which looks good and would work.

They will be injected, don't worry. I just need to find some free time.

However, since black HUD seems to look better, Dr. Mario sprites must be redone in ROM, switching black and white colors.

Oh. I'm sorry. Anyways, I'll be working on fixing up the bottle and score area as well as other things.

EDIT: I did some really good changes, but I am just waiting for marc_max to give me his opinion on it first before I show everyone else it. I'm sure this one will work in game.

What was wrong with the Dr. Mario sprites I made? I thought that it was using the correct three colors. Anyways, I can try redoing parts to make it fit better.

I just finished working on the game field, which includes the clipboard and bottle. I used the NES tiles to make this except for the very top of the bottle's opening, which was custom made due to there being no sprites for it. I'm not sure if I will make the score area and the high/med/low area black or not. I have also noticed that the score box and the bottle share the same sprites, so I might make the score box the same color as the bottle to save on colors, but I do like the colors I have for it and I also plan on using the colors for the game select screen. I have also been thinking about maybe making the virus and Dr. Mario boxes black as well and see how it would look. I might post compare pics to ask for everyone's opinion for that one. I will say that I am quiet pleased with the results, yet I am not sure if it will work or not. Can marc_max please PM me so I can ask him for some info? Anyways, next is the select screen. ;D



EDIT: I did a little changes to the Dr. Mario sprite, fixing up the hair a little and a small tweak to make it look better. I have also made a black box version of the game field, which has a blue area for the viruses. I would like to get other people's opinion on which would look better.

Great work, so far.
When you finish with Dr. Mario, if you decide to move on to other titles, may I suggest Donkey Kong 94?
There's a game that would be great in full color.

I agree. That game looks great on the Super Game Boy, but on a Game Boy Color, with even more and better colors, it will look fantastic. By the way, on the screenshots you had, I like the first one, but with the black background for Dr. Mario's area that's on the second screenshot. After I finish with the virus and Dr. Mario sprites, I can take a look at the clipboard and bottle colors as well as the water screens with the fish.

EDIT:  I finished up the virus sprites. As for Dr. Mario, I tried to work on remaking him to look more like the NES version, but it just didn't look right, so I just did some very minor changes to the Game Boy sprites and gave it colors that fit the NES version. I think it will look good and fit in properly like this. I did try to give him his stethoscope, but I couldn't make it fit cleanly on the sprite due to the size, so I left it out. I might try again on adding it in though another time. He should be in a white background as that is the only color I can think of that would look best for this sprite. As for the viruses, I am not 100% happy with how the yellow one turned out, but I think it should do just fine. I might go back to it and touch it up, maybe. I also added the pills, tiny viruses, and the blink image when a virus vanishes, which I changed to match the NES version, but colored black to fit the white background. Now, to get started on the clipboard and bottle.

Thanks for all the positive replies. I am very happy that others love my work. I am still waiting for ROMHacking to accept my patch. Just keep on waiting for it to show up.

Holy carp it's excellent.

Thanks. I made it entirely from scratch, pixel by pixel. I just had a pic of the logo next to me to compare it with. I couldn't get it 100% perfect though and I wasn't able to make the flower background, but I'm very proud of it.

I just made a new title screen using Adventures Of Mana as its name. It took about a week to make. I just submitted it so give it a day or two to be accepted. Anyways, here's a pic to show what it looks like. I hope you like it. ;D

Just a small suggestion. The title screen would look better if you removed the block over the words Mario's Keep and make the word Keep as small as the word Mario. That way, it's not overlapping the top blocks and it look more cleaner.

Since this uses a modified emulator, I can't accept this as a true NES ROM hack. It should be able to run on an accurate emulator like Mesen or on a real system, not on an emulator that was modified to play the game.

One thing I would do is change the font and numbers to look like the ones on Link's Awakening or something nice. The plain, blocky font that they used looks too generic and boring as well as not giving the game a unique style.

@FC I'm still not sure what I'll do with the music. I haven't really touched that yet. So much to do on this hack. When the time comes I'll see if you can help, if needed.

I've worked some more on the hack. as is the case with changing things, some people may prefer the old version. But I changed the city to a not so dark theme. It required writing a lot of assembly code to draw those road tiles, as the original was simply a repeated blank one.

Also, not sure I've mentioned this already, but I expanded the ROM (2 extra PRG banks) and now I'm using a crystal clear "Ghostbusters!" shout. Credits for that go to NewRisingSun. I wanted to have two versions of the hack, one not expanded without the shout and one expanded, but this was complicating things and was one of the reasons I stopped hacking this game. So I decided to just go with the best version.

Other than these, I've been fixing some more bugs. Still no release date in sight.

Wouldn't it be better if instead of the Ghostbusters theme being written, why not just have a message saying something like having the mayor or, if you want it to be like the C64 version, the bank call Janine and tell her that they need the Ghostbusters to rid the city of ghosts and then enter Zuul to close the gate and save the city? You can make it like a phone call you would see in the movies, including her answering with, "Ghostbusters. What do you want?" Just a thought.

This may sound mainstream and dumb, but can this game actually be good? Won't lie, it's amazing how the interesting individuals posting projects here seem to fix games that had every reason to be good but weren't, let alone remixing good ones like some psychedelic rave.

I thought that the C64 version, while more simpler then this one, was a good game.

The differences between the two screenshots are night and day. I wonder what made Activision think that the original look was good enough?
