Script Help and Language Discussion / Re: Sentence Translation Help
« on: June 08, 2018, 10:21:03 pm »
Hello again!

I would like to know if my translation is accurate please.

Script:
"あなたの 撮影の腕前見たいので
私を写真に 撮ってもらうますか?"
"I want to see your pictures. Can you take some pictures for me?"

Is that accurate?

Thank you!

"I'd like to see how good of a photographer you are. Can you take some pictures of me?"

Seems like there are five tables left to be transcribed, do you still need a hand with these?

Hi Guys,

maybe for the next time:

Thanks

I've tried using OCR software like this before, but the accuracy is so ridiculously low, it's best to do this manually still.

If you're talking about the frog from Chrono Trigger, he was super serious and all about business/honor/protecting the throne. Even though his speech patterns remind me more of something European he very much reminds me of the serious samurai type that are in so many movies and stories.

Actually, I was just going through the game a little, and his speech patterns are just really... normal. I have no idea why they decided to change this in the translation, but he's supposed to sound like a regular guy who was forced to be brave it seems. His friend Cyrus has that whole medieval thing going on, though. It's the first time I looked at the game in Japanese since I started learning Japanese many years ago, and it dumbfounds to see he's a completely different character originally.

10
You know, I was thinking of a good translation for his name that still carries some deeper meaning, but what about Croaker, as in someone who forebodes evil. I really can't remember his personality all that much, but it does kinda fit the story. (Unless I remember wrong of course.)

11
Ah, that's a terrible example. :D It looks like no one helped him and then he ended up doing it all by himself (took him an entire month :P).

Yeah, that shouldn't have taken more than a few hours by someone who knows these to be honest. Poor guy.  ;D

i have found where they're stored mostly cuz i've been replacing them with english characters as i've needed but i could still post the original sheets for help on them.

Go ahead, I wouldn't mind having a look at them.

12
I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here, but I'd like to make some further suggestions.

それにしても おれたちまで
ついらくしてまうとは。。。
That aside, to think even we would crash...

最悪のてんかいだな
A terrible turn of events, all right.

I don't know much about the context of the game, so please consider these as mere suggestions.

13
Here's something I'm curious about and this seems like a good time and thread to ask.

I was watching an episode of Cutie Honey: The Live and when Yuki got kidnapped she was very sympathetic to her captor and kept referring to him as what I guess equates to "criminal-san". Suppose this were a translation where keeping the honorifics wasn't desirable. How would some of you translate this without losing the joke in the process?

Mr. Criminal

Sounds as silly as in Japanese and you have a perfect translation right there.

14
Thank you very much for your help! I might post another line or two here if something comes up. Only a couple scripts were handled by this translator, but most of the other lines seemed pretty accurate, in any case.

Anyone interested in following this project can do so over at GBATemp.

-----------------------------------------------
Edit:

This line also gave a bit of trouble:

Text:
ん? 今日は吉井と坂本だけじゃないようだね。
雁首そろえて何の用だい?
まぁ、どうせ賞品のことだろうけどさ。

Translation:
Hm? Looks like it's just Yoshii and Sakamoto today.
???????????????????????????
Anyway, I assume this is about the reward, right?

****
This line is spoken by the principal after Akihisa Yoshii and Sakamoto burst into her office unannounced. The second line appears to use a phrase that the translator was unfamiliar with. Does anyone know what it means?

ん? 今日は吉井と坂本だけじゃないようだね。
Hm? It looks like it's not just Yoshii and Sakamoto today.

雁首そろえて何の用だい?
雁首をそろえる means 'to get together/to gather,' but in a highly derisive fashion. You'll have to change the tone of your translation or throw in an insult like 'incompetent fools' to reflect this, but it depends on the nature of the situation.

まぁ、どうせ賞品のことだろうけどさ。
Well, I assume this is about the reward anyway.
賞品 can also mean award/trophy/prize, so check with your TL what they are actually talking about.

I'd like to help, but I'm not sure what it is that you're trying to do.

16
My pleasure. I can image you wouldn't be able to see clear anymore after transcribing that, the print is really small and enlarging it doesn't really help either. :s

Script Help and Language Discussion / Re: (GBA) Hikaru no Go
« on: May 31, 2014, 04:27:37 am »
I love hikago, but unfortunately I'm more of a translator than a romhacker. I've never tried to hack GBA before, but I'll give script dumping a go and post my results tonight.

Unrelated, but gotta ask: ckrit, wanna play go sometime? :)

*edit1; As I vaguely recall reading a long time ago, GBA games use S-JIS encoding, and in good form Hikaru no Go 1 and 2 both use S-JIS encoding, and neither script is compressed.

*edit2; These are sort of raw and incomplete, but they were super easy to make with EsperKnight's SJIS dumper
hikaru no go 1 script dump
hikaru no go 2 script dump

I think the easiest workflow is to make a proper table file full of control codes, dump with cartographer, and insert with Atlas. Therefore, I wouldn't necessarily try to start translating with these rough scripts, but you can get an idea of the size and scope, I guess.

Thanks for the help tashi, this has indeed given me a nice view of how much work that lies ahead. (which is pretty doable, they're pretty short games after all.

And I'd love to play a game once, are you on KGS by any chance?

I intend to work on them sooner or later, but I'm already very busy with other projects.
If no one offer help for the next 6 months, I may propose myself :)

I will probably start making a rough translation soon using the script tashi has dumped as a reference. If no one else wants to claim this, please let me know when you're free to work on it.

Yup, those are the ones. Like I said, I know nothing about romhacking, so I wasn't aware about any graphical editing. That said, I can do anything Japanese related, but that's it. :)

I originally wanted to post this in the help wanted ads, but I didn't know where to do so (typing this I just found the submit button  ::) )

Thanks for the help!

Script Help and Language Discussion / (GBA) Hikaru no Go
« on: May 29, 2014, 09:03:07 am »
Hey there, I was wondering if anyone would like to help me make a full translation of the Hikago games on GBA. I know absolutely nothing about programming or romhacking, but if someone could dump me the script, I'd love to start working on it. I know how to play Go, so understanding the rules or terminology won't be a problem. I have no objection of doing this under whichever group name.

As for experience, I haven't translated any games before, but I regularly work on business mails, articles, youtube videos, company faq's and things like that on the side. Have been translating manga as well, but I'd like some game translating experience as well.
