ROM Hacking Discussion / Request: Patch to Fix Jet Force Gemini Controls

I've been wanting to play Jet Force Gemini since I was a kid.  I have tried to play it multiple times over the last 2 years but have always walked away frustrated due to the unintuitive default controls, reverse vertical targeting, and terrible sensitivity/dead zone when using the targeting control.  I have tried to use both the mupen64plus Retroarch core and Project 64 to fix the controls but have not come away with something that is playable. The re-release of this game through Rare Replay just reinforces the idea that this game's controls can indeed be updated with something more modern and palatable.

I have no coding knowledge myself.  My request to the community is for a kind soul to create and release a patch for this Nintendo 64 game that does 2 simple things:

1) Only when holding the button down for targeting, the controls are not reversed.  The patch will make it so that up = up and down = down, when the targeting button is pressed.

2) Only when using targeting, the default sensitivity/deadzone is changed so that the target cursor moves around with a decreased speed with something that is actually usable for targeting.  The default speed is super fast, unusable, and trying to change the sensitivity/deadzone through an emulator not only does not fix the targeting speed to something usable but also makes the character slower, sometimes removing the ability to run entirely, depending on one's settings.

I love this community and it is my hope that someone with coding knowledge reads this and can create a patch that can address the two issues mentioned above.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

I hope you reconsider coming back to this project.  On your YouTube channel you mentioned that you have since moved on to something else.  If that is still the case and you don't ever intend on working on the other levels of this beloved game, would you at least consider sharing the raw work you have already accomplished in the hopes that someone else could pick up where you left off?

Still pushing forward. I'm nearing the end of Gradriel's scenario in this current (and probably final) editing pass.

I have been waiting years to finally play this in English.  You have no idea how happy and excited I am that you are doing this.  I would literally buy you a beer if I could.  I remember trying to play this years ago using a poorly translated guide from an old Kotaku article.  It was so slow and took me so long to look down at my printed translation and then back at the game again.  I gave up because I was so frustrated.  It killed the immersion for me.  I have aged since then and my worldview is so fundamentally different, but I have never stopped loving videogames and never stopped hoping that some day, one day, this game would see an actual English release.

This is awesome.  I can't wait to play this.  I have been waiting years.  Thank you so much for doing this!  I'm so excited.

No idea unfortunately. As far as I can tell, doesn't list anywhere who actually claimed the copyright unless I went forward with a formal dispute, using my name and address. The thought crossed my mind quite a bit about it being some random person on the internet, but I don't know either what it takes for a claim to be filed with Mega. I'm sure I've made a few enemies due to my rants about most of the Legacy Collections or who knows what else.

That said, removing the music has seemed to please whoever it was, so maybe it was actually Capcom. I'd still be sort of surprised by that because from what I've seen, they've been fairly accepting of fan projects and I don't see why using chopped up versions of their music is any different than using their original, unedited sprites and BG graphics... which 99% of fan games do.

Is there a way to get this with a music pack?  Or does anyone have a copy of the original upload?

The past few weeks have been very productive.

- All entrance signs have been created, as well as copied, distributed into subfolders and renamed to facilitate an attempt at full insertion.

- Map graphics have been fixed, including Dwalf Land (sorry BlackMageJawa  ;))

- One set of monster names that exist as graphics has been fixed. Alterations include Bigfook to Bighook (this guy) and Polter Geist to Poltergeist, among others.

- I've taken the first baby steps into another editing pass. Hopefully, this round will go more quickly than the others.

This is wonderful news!  I have been faithfully waiting for this translation for years.  I'm super excited to hear about your excellent progress.  I can't wait to see it when you are finished.  Thank you so much for doing this.  I wish there was something I could do to assist you or make things easier.  Good luck and thank you for being awesome!
