Newcomer's Board / How Much ASM Knowledge is Needed to Translate a Game?
« on: October 06, 2017, 11:16:42 am »
I was wondering, how much ASM knowledge does someone need to dump the untranslated script and reinsert the translated script? Assuming they don't have to make their own fonts, and stuff like that. I understand that sounds a little vague, but I can't think of anything to add to it at the moment.

Newcomer's Board / Any N64 Emulators with Debugging Capabilities?
« on: October 05, 2017, 07:48:55 pm »
Hello people,

The title was pretty self explanatory, I am looking for an N64 emulator with debugging capabilities. As for the extent of the capabilities, I don't need a full on suite, a barebones debugger would be fine. Although it would be good to have something to the extent that say FCEUX has it.

Programming / Some Dumb 6502 Assembly Questions
« on: October 02, 2017, 04:34:23 pm »

I just started learning 6502 Assembly and I would like to ask a few dumb questions.

1. What does the .hex instruction do? I've been looking over the source code for the original Legend of Zelda on the NES and it uses this command quite often. Is it similar to the .byte instruction?

2. Can someone explain the BRK(break) command to me? All the documentation I've looked at does not explain it well.

3. I'm having a bit of trouble understanding Zero Page Indirect Indexed with Y. Ex. (ZeroPageAddress), Y

I will update this post as I continue to learn and my IQ gets lower.

Programming / Best Assembler/Disassembler
« on: September 30, 2017, 12:56:23 pm »

I would like to know what the preferred assembler/disassembler is for 6502 NES Assembly. It does not need to be one program, multiple programs would work fine.
I'm looking for these tools for Windows or DOS.

Newcomer's Board / Has Anyone Ever Documented a Full ROM Hack?
« on: September 25, 2017, 07:41:36 pm »
The title was ambiguous, so let me explain. I am looking for any form of documentation(text, video, even pictures) that documented the
entire process of a ROM Hack. I'm basically looking for "There is byte x at offset x, which I used to change x."
Nothing else matters, doesn't matter the game, console, platform they used, etc.., just that.

Edit: It does not matter the level of hacking done, just that something was changes.

Thanks for reading!

Newcomer's Board / Is Searching Through a ROM This Hard?
« on: September 19, 2017, 04:56:14 pm »
Hello all,

I've been searching through a ROM to try and find specific bytes but I was wondering, when searching through a ROM, do you really have to change every couple bytes and see what they did? Because that would be a huge pain in the butt.

Newcomer's Board / Problems With SearchR
« on: September 01, 2017, 07:10:45 pm »

I am trying to use SearchR to search a ROM and when I run it in a DOS emulator(I've tried two) it gives me the error " Load Error: no DPMI - Get csdpmi*"
I have no idea what this means or how to fix it and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Newcomer's Board / How Does One About Joining a ROM Hacking Group?
« on: September 01, 2017, 12:34:25 pm »
Hello all,

There's not much to be said here, other than that I would like to know how to go about joining an existing ROM Hacking group.

Programming / Can You Use C++ For ROM Hacking?
« on: August 31, 2017, 12:51:00 pm »
Hello all,

As the title suggests, I would like to know if it would be possible to use C++ for ROM Hacking. I ask because everything I've seen points to Assembly as the way to go for ROM Hacking, but I'm quite far in C++(which I learned for separate reasons), and I would hate to have to learn an entirely new language. So yeah, is there any way to use C++ for ROM Hacking?
