Personal Projects / Hal Wrestling [GB] - Realistic Hack
« on: December 03, 2018, 09:17:46 pm »
This game came out in 1990, and was developed by Human Entertainment, the original team behind the Fire Pro Wrestling games. Like all of the other wrestling games in the Fire Pro franchise, this used similar but different enough wrestlers so that they could avoid copyright/trademark issues. It used popular and relevant wrestlers from New Japan Pro Wrestling, All Japan Pro Wrestling, and  Newborn UWF. Even if you aren't into Japanese wrestling, there are popular US wrestlers in the game too since they were famous in Japan as well.

The goal of the hack is to restore all of the real names and remake portraits.

The roster is:

Akira Maeda
Antonio Inoki
Riki Choshu
Stan Hansen
Bruiser Brody
Jushin (Thunder) Liger, who will be listed as just Jushin Liger as Thunder wasn't added until later
Road Warrior Hawk
Big Van Vader

And a final boss named Mr. Hu, who isn't based off of any wrestler in particular, but rather represents the developers. It's weird to me that Giant Baba wasn't in the game, so I may consider replacing Mr. Hu with him.

The game might not be able to compete with modern ones in terms of options, but I think it has held up somewhat well. The gameplay is surprisingly smooth, and there are quite a few different moves for each wrestler.

I've already replaced text, and will be drawing custom more realistic portraits as seen here for Inoki:
Left is the new one, right is old

As you can see, I'll be replacing the signature move with their promotion that they were signed to at the time of its release. I will be restoring the nicknames on the pre battle screen that was found on the Japanese one too most likely. I might not though if it ends up looking too cluttered.

I'd also like to put the original Human splash screen and put in a custom title, but this might be beyond my abilities at the moment.

Most portraits are now done! Only two more and Mr. Hu if I change him.

Help Wanted Ads / [Technical] [GB] Hal Wrestling - Playable Boss?
« on: December 02, 2018, 11:19:15 pm »
I know playable bosses are usually impossible since they're not really fully fleshed out characters, but every now and then there seems to be a way to make them playable via a cheat code. Is it possible for this game? Either with a hack via IPS or a cheat code?

And how about a way to edit the portraits? I don't see them showing up looking through YY-CHR, so I assume they are compressed or something? Is there a not so painful way to go about this?
SOLVED THE PORTRAITS, I just sucked at graphic editing programs.

ROM Hacking Discussion / DTE Table Expansion in FF1 NES
« on: November 13, 2018, 01:26:18 am »
I feel like I'm missing something really obvious here, and it is driving me crazy. I can't get this working at all. I applied the changes mentioned in this post (and the PRNG patch which I was told was needed), and then proceeded to update the tables.

And here is a snippet of what my new table looks like:

And this is what it looks like in game:

an is a normal DTE character, and I had added di to one of the new slots. Neither of them show up in game now (it's supposed to read Bandido), and most stuff is just junky looking.

Does anyone know what it is that I am doing wrong?

Personal Projects / Lucha Libre Fantasy (FF1 hack)
« on: October 10, 2018, 11:55:48 pm »
I've been a lifelong wrestling fan, and have always been enamored with Mexican wrestling since I was a kid. This game is basically a loveletter to one of my greatest hobbies, and all of lucha libre including the movies starring guys like El Santo, Blue Demon and Mil Mascaras (fans of MST3k likely have seen these).

This project is going to take a long time since I started it not even knowing what to do with a hex editor, but have been teaching myself things as I go along (luckily FFHackster helps with many things). Currently I've been trying to focus on sprites while I plan the other aspects like spells, bug fixes, story etc.

Here are some screenshots of some of the work I've done so far:

ROM Hacking Discussion / Hex Editing and FFHackster

Would doing any of the stuff listed here interfere with using FFHackster? I'm just now trying my hand at learning this stuff, and I haven't really found any answers to that.
