Gaming Discussion / Definitive versions of classic RPGs
« on: November 04, 2021, 12:20:12 pm »
Obviously it's something up to personal preference, but what would you say were the definitive versions of different classic rpgs? Patched or unpatched is fine.

Gaming Discussion / Games that put you to sleep.
« on: July 18, 2021, 01:43:28 pm »
So I've been trying to play Shin Megami Tensei IV again, but keep finding myself getting absolutely zonked after less than a half hour playing, sometimes I literally just pass out without even being able to pause. I have never had a game put me out with such sheer soporific force, and I have no idea why, it's not boring in the least either..

So anyways, do you all have games that do this to you? Or movies if you prefer.
I'm curious.

Gaming Discussion / Dragon Quest III HD2D
« on: May 27, 2021, 06:43:49 pm »
Looks like Dragon Quest III is getting the Octopath treatment.

Imo, it looks freaking gorgeous.
I probably won't be making this my first version of DQIII, since I plan to play the NES or SFC versions first but as it stands it's a day one purchase.

Gaming Discussion / No$GBA is unavailable?
« on: May 21, 2021, 07:07:05 pm »
I was having some trouble with my copy of the emu, the display window was flashing violently,
so I went over to the website to pick up a fresh debug build and all the links are dead, even the standard non debug build is 404.

What's the deal? I swore I could download from the site just fine not too long ago.

Hey all, I'm helping sorrow with a modification of the Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance hack Revenge of the Findesicle.

Basically the gist of it is that sorrow wants to add a story mode for the extra characters but to do that we had to enable the Rock Crusher weapon's ability for all characters, this allows them to "charge" and then unleash a wave attack that destroys walls but has the side effect of overwriting character graphics in VRAM causing the animation to become a glitchy mess.

So what I'm asking is, does anybody have any idea how to find the code that's setting these sprites up to be written to VRAM?
All I need to do is stop it from loading/updating those graphics and possibly resize the hitbox to make it look like it's centered on the weapon.
But I got nothin tbh, graphics hacking is definitely not my forte...

Gaming Discussion / So I've started playing Wizardry V (SNES)
« on: January 10, 2021, 06:46:43 pm »
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, whether it was something like Ultima or Dragon Quest or what, but so far about half an hour in I've been fairly blown away just by the atmosphere of this game, the lack of Ui and the gritty backgrounds are really awesome, some of the enemies so far are just gobbledygook, but judging by some of the screenshots I've seen, this game has some damn good spritework somewhere down the line, this seems like one I'm definitely going to stick with, even if I have to manually map every floor and inscribe clues by hand.

Gaming Discussion / SaGa Frontier is back!!
« on: November 28, 2020, 12:57:01 pm »
Square just announced an HD port, and even better, it's the completed game with all the axed events and Fuse restored, I have never been so happy for a remaster, even the earlier TWEWY:NEO announcement didn't get me the same way.

Obviously the smoothed out graphics aren't going to sit well with everyone, but imo it's a far cry from their earlier vasoline filter monstrosities. I'm just overjoyed that SaGa Frontier of all things got a second chance.

Gaming Discussion / Games that are good for people learning Japanese?
« on: October 19, 2020, 05:47:27 pm »
I've been doing Japanese language lessons lately, breezed right through the hiragana and katakana, Kanji is a little chewy though.

I'm looking for games that would make good reading practice material, I thought I would try the Dragon Quest 1&2 collection, but it's a bit too much for now, preferably I'd also like something without text crunch, because picking out Japanese characters at low res is a royal pain in the ass.

Since I'm binging multiple tutorials in my off-time right now, I was thinking about trying to make a sort of tech demo for a First person RPG on SNES hardware, nothing fancy, just smooth movement and minimalist environments, 2D objects and npcs, I'm not quite sure how well SNES could handle 3D in general though, I might be better off just trying to build such a thing on PC openGL/Vulkan maybe?

I've recently been thinking of getting into the Shadowrun series and I'm wondering where the best starting point is.

I picked up the Genesis version at the bargain store, and while it's not terrible it is kinda jank, should I keep on this one and learn it, or pick up a different one to start with? The store does still have the SNES version too, and I was looking at maybe trying the newer ones on Steam too.

I just finished up the early access demo and it was damn good.

It's essentially a Symphony of the Night clone by way of the Lodoss War series (basically DnD transcribed into an anime if you're not familiar), but with the polarity swapping mechanic from Ikaruga/Sillhouette Mirage, and a few more mechanoics added on the side(Bow is good). Overall I wouldn't say it's as good as SotN because that's a high bar to cross, but from what I've played so far it's definitely up there, the graphics are gorgeous, sprites are fluid, sound is great, kind of booming and orchestral sounding (noticed a little bit of the Lodoss War main theme mixed in too), and the gameplay is kinda basically SotN? Just straight up, they copied the backdash, the weapon swapping, and even the general feel of the movement is kinda like SotN. I'm really excited to see where they go with this once it's more polished up.

Gaming Discussion / I bought a kid their first game console
« on: December 01, 2019, 07:00:04 am »
The child in question being the adorable nine year old daughter of a friend who's living with us, we got her hooked on Dragon Quest Builders by accident and she decided she wanted a PS4 for Christmas, so she's getting the black Friday bundle, but with God of War and the Last of Us replaced with DQ Builders 2,and A Hat in Time.

On one hand I'm proud of introducing someone new to the hobby, but on the other I feel sorta guilty? Like a drug pusher, games are a fucking expensive addiction.

But I guess I made a new best friend. She likes Donkey Kong Country and Smash Bros too.

Gaming Discussion / Alphadream bankruptcy.
« on: October 03, 2019, 10:10:05 am »
You may have already heard, but Alphadream, the company behind the Mario and Luigi RPG series has gone bankrupt with the colossal failure of the Bowsers Inside Story remake, nobody has any idea yet if they can recover or if they'll be bought out by Nintendo. Hopefully this doesn't end with the series dead or with AD becoming the next Rareware or Camelot.

Programming / GBA hacking: How to modify branch jumps?
« on: June 25, 2019, 06:00:01 am »
There's a block of code in the ROM I'm working with right now, that I want to move backwards a few bytes to utilize some empty space nearby, the problem is that I don't know how to change the addresses that branches in the code jump to, leaving the thing unusable the moment I change the location of the code at all, does anyone have any idea how i could go about fixing this?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm still unused to working with GBA ASM code.

The right trigger on my OG New 3DS seems to be toast, even after disassembly and cleaning, and I can only find replacement parts for the XL version, anybody know somewhere that sells the right parts?

I suppose it's partially my own fault for picking up the more limited model, but the XL was out of stock at the time.  ::)

I'm trying to run the GBA programming tut over at patater.
  • Installed DevkitPro
  • Updated DevkitPro(Initial install missed some files)
  • dropped patater's sample code into an test_1.S file
Code: [Select]
.global main
mov r0, #0x4000000
mov r1, #0x400
add r1, r1, #3
str r1, [r0]
mov r0, #0x6000000
mov r1, #0xFF
mov r2, #0x9600
strh r1, [r0], #2
subs r2, r2, #1
bne loop1
b infin
  • Command Prompt, Desktop, make test_1.S
  • It tells me no action is required, but doesn't produce anything apparently?

I know 'm doing something wrong but I don't know what, don't really have much experience compiling outside of Visual Studio.

Gaming Discussion / Neo Geo 2&3 + New Metal Slug, thoughts?
« on: April 19, 2019, 01:13:27 pm »
SNK has recently announced plans to make a Neo Geo 2 & 3, unrelated to their mini consoles.

Tbh my ex with SNK is limited to King of Fighters and some videos of Metal Slug, but I'm really excited to see what they come up with, maybe a new Console/Arcade System? They've also announced that they'll be putting out at least two games a year from this point on, possibly they go down in a blaze of glory?

Gaming Discussion / Metroid Prime 4 development restarted from scratch.
« on: January 25, 2019, 11:39:15 am »

A major company realizing it fucked up then legit apologizing and scrambling to fix said fuck-up? What kind of madness is this?!

I'm glad Retro is back on board though, hopefully they can get it on track.

Gaming Discussion / Demi Kids related Mystery Prototype found.
« on: January 12, 2019, 09:51:45 am »

Hopefully it gets dumped eventually, were not even sure if it was a separate game just running on the same engine or a test area for the actual games.

There's some speculation down in comment land that it's actually a Last Bible remake using the Demi Kids engine as well.

Gaming Discussion / Just got a my first PSP, recommended games?
« on: December 29, 2018, 04:57:49 pm »
My buddy gave me his old PSP, it's a bit scuffed, power port a bit lose, but otherwise in good shape.

Aside from Final Fantasy Tactics:WotL, which I plan to get asap are there any games that come highly recommended for the system?
