^You'd think an article would at least have a screenshot, or link to some of the videos. Just makes it sound like the game was announced and that was it.

The E3 Direct showed a trailer and the amiibo. Gameplay and videos with developers immediately followed during the Treehouse portion of the show.
There's a link to Nintendo's official website in the first post of this topic which has screenshots and a video. On that page, there's a link to the official Metroid Dread website which has a buttload of stuff.

Not quite sure what else you'd need. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

There was a lot about that game that frustrated the hell out of me, which reading the manual or knowing the mechanics would not have helped with, though. I was trying to keep it concise for the sake of brevity.

Yeah, sorry about that!

I grew up with DKC1 and 2, so spent many hours getting 'good' at them (I still suck). Many consider DKC2 to be the hardest of the original trilogy, which could very well be true; several of the late levels are bonkers. Just now went through a few levels and forgot how awful Animal Antics is.

Yes, and helplines, too. Part of the reason why many games back then were so tough must have been to make money from people calling in or getting a Nintendo Power subscription.

Back on topic, the hardest game I've played has to be Ghosts 'n Goblins. I can barely get past the first guy, not to speak of the rest of it. While I never owned that, I did have Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, which was also pretty difficult (I never beat it until later with save states). The fact that you're forced to play through the games in that franchise twice to get the true ending is absolutely sadistic.

Has anyone mentioned the Disney games? Some of those were utterly ruthless. I'm thinking of The Lion King, Aladdin, etc. In that whole era, companies were trying to crack down on customers abusing rentals, so they made the games so hard that it was more worth it to simply buy the games rather than renting multiple times. That was really the only way to dedicate enough time to be able to beat them.

Let's also not forget the Super Star Wars trilogy. Holy crap, were those games bullshit. Especially Empire. Just ridiculous.

Sure, just dump me into a level with a new game mechanic where I have to make a Spring-Loaded Snake I've never met and don't care about, jump really high, and don't fucking bother to tell me how unless I look it up online or read the manual, then start filling the level with toxic waste.
This isn't quite true. You're introduced to Rattly in the first world, and even if you never read the manual, the button to make him jump high is written out in bananas. There are several other points in the game where Rattly appears, and there's even a level where you're forced to play as him (Rattle Battle). The rising water mechanic is also used in a previous level (Slime Climb).

With any older game, the manual contains most of the story, the controls, and various other important pieces of information. Nowadays, we're spoiled by games with baked-in tutorials. Back then, reading a manual was the norm. Now that the internet is widespread, it's not too hard to skim through a pdf online.

I will 100% agree with you that the level you had problems with is difficult. It was a wall for me too back in the '90s. The later race level (Screech's Sprint) is also tough as nails, iirc.

The only time, I think, Nintendo acknowledged an anniversary for Donkey Kong was for the anniversary of the 1994 SNES game that they developed with Rare.
It's so disappointing that Nintendo won't do anything new with their old properties. They thrive on selling nostalgia yet just re-release the same tired games over and over again. When they make a new game, it always needs some unique gimmick, many of which don't age well or are tied to the hardware they're made for.
They could so easily make sequels to almost every classic game using new assets in the style of the old. The original games were made by teams of usually less than 10 people. Now that they're a larger company, it feels almost disrespectful that they don't even set aside a few people on a 'classic games' team. And many of the old franchises are dying not only because they're so underused but also since they're never celebrated on their anniversaries. Genre-defining pillars of the company like Donkey Kong, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc are becoming forgotten. ROM hackers have them beat, yet they're rewarded with DMCAs for their hard work. The whole situation is quite sad.

The 'SP' versions on Switch are absolutely pathetic excuses for updates. Not to mention the 3D All-Stars debacle. Seems that the Skyward Sword remake also won't address many of the problems the original game had. Maybe I'm wrong. We'll see.

I want to hate this, but it's too dang charming. This is like what indie developers THINK retro games looked like.
Absolutely. Many 'retro' indie games are technically either too complex (too many colours, etc) or too underclocked as you say to have ever been actual games from the era. The reason why many old games look the way they do is almost always due to the limitations of the hardware of the time. Like the story of Mario's creation which I'm sure everyone here knows.

The intention here with this hack wasn't to simply render TLoZ 50% smaller. Many elements don't fit to a 128x120 pixel grid. For example, it's not only Link's shield that's off, but also his eyes and feet. If this annoys/disappoints you, I apologise.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. While I don't particularly wish to revisit this unless I totally messed up somewhere, I'll bear what you said in mind with future projects.

I'm working on a graphics project for The Legend of Zelda (NES). However, it doesn't seem quite complete without editing certain sound effects and music.

I'm aware that almost every NES game has its own music engine and that one must essentially re-write the existing music in hex code. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about coding, so I barely know where to begin. I downloaded @ActionGamer's Music Hacking Document, which contains a lot of reference hex numbers and no tutorial. It's like hieroglyphics. As I said, I'm not even at a 'beginner' level here.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or possibly help me out? Any assistance is appreciated.
