Personal Projects / Re: Zelda 1 Redux / The Legend of Zelda Redux

Yeah, that always bothered me. In the personal hack I use, I edited the position a bit to make it less noticeable, though not really fixed:

Out of those, Metroid Redux sounds the most enticing to me.

That said, I'd really love to see what you could do with an Ys I Redux. The NES port delivers the core of a great Ys experience, though it definitely has some issues. Despite these, it remains one of the best action-RPGs on the platform. Simply making it so that you don't have to be so near to the screen's edge before it begins to scroll (a rather huge problem in a game with bump combat) would massively improve things.

These updates are really cool to see!

I've always had a soft spot for the SNES version of ToP, and while I've been keeping myself from getting too hyped on account of this being such an ambitious project which could thus take quite a while to release, I'm sure it will be worth the wait

Thanks again for your continued updates!

A quality-of-life suggestion for Goemon 2-4: As the recent "Faster Walking Buildup Speed" hack for Flink has demonstrated, having a more immediate response to holding the run button is a good thing.

In Goemon 2-4 there is a 1-2 second delay between when you begin holding the run button and when your character actually runs. Having an optional patch that makes this immediate (or at least shorter) would frankly make the gameplay during the platforming sections of these titles feel a lot more responsive.

RHDN obviously made the right call in honoring mz's takedown request.

I was one of those who downloaded it here and starting playing before discovering that it was a leaked translation. I've decided to hold off in anticipation of a completed release, although I am somewhat curious as to whether the leaked file is in an unfinished-but-very-playable state (a la Fire Emblem 4's Project Naga beta) or just a mess. Still, not curious enough to invest time only to discover the latter.

So you also have completed scripts for all three Romancing SaGa games and have given up on finding a programmer? That's crazy. I mean no offense by this, but it sounds like you've put all your work into translating and not enough into building beneficial relationships. I really hope you can find a partner that's in sync with you in the future.

Edit: It seems the conflict was over different approaches/collaborations/liberties taken regarding the translation effort. It's just sad that there wasn't room for a compromise. I know you've put a ton of effort into this project and wish both you and DDS the best.

Great to see an update! Guess I can give this another run while trying to endure the wait for the sequel's translation.

Awesome news! Thanks for the update & best of luck with those finishing touches (and with the real life business!)

Some great ideas here, though I have to ask: Have you ever considered a similar project for Ys?

Zelda 1 has a ton of great hacks, but the NES version of Ys 1 has seen little love since the translation and could really use a few QoL improvements (the screen not scrolling until you're right by the edge is rather problematic in a game with bump combat, for example).

I'm still rather partial to my Link sprites (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3702/) ;D

Of course, I can always just make an addendum when this hack gets out of beta. Looking forward to that 1.0!

Major congrats on another milestone in SNES translations! Your team has certainly been busy. It's really awesome to see all the SNES MegaTen games finally playable in English

Thanks! While this fixes the freeze, it doesn't appear to be any more complete than the current (broken) translation, unless I'm missing something (only played a bit, so I could be, but it mainly looks like the same menu translation).

I made an IPS file for those who would prefer easier patching:

It's looking great so far :)

Very minor note: the "Hey Goemon, did you know..." line spoken by your next-door neighbor in the first village should end with a question mark rather than a period.

I was wondering if you and DDS would aim for a simultaneous release with this and Goemon 2, but to see it released now is cool as well. Congrats and thanks for your work in giving some much-deserved love to the Goemon series!

Thanks! All the PC shadows were edited, though I just tossed a few examples together for the above image. I wouldn't worry about sending me a compressed version, as I like the faster load times and don't really mind the file size. I might ask for that if I were to post the patch here officially, but I'm not sure that such a minor sprite hack merits it. I've actually made a bunch of touch-up sprite hacks like this ;D

What changes are you planning for your updated decompression patch? I haven't run into any bugs thus far, even when combined with "The New Class."

Also really looking forward to your completed Gradius 3 hack!

So this is a petty detail that probably only matters to me, but I've always found it distracting how some of the player characters seem to have overly jagged shadows. Since slidelljohn was kind enough to share that deccompressor patch a while back, I went ahead and smoothed/simplified the shadows. All the PC shadows have been tweaked, though the changes are most noticeable on Kamil and Esuna.

I also touched up Lejes' horns to make him more closely resemble his appearance in the Japanese game, though I left his newer palette intact.

The patch is available here (includes the decompressor):
https://www.mediafire.com/file/r6vdr83103qrmq3/7th_Saga_%5BNewShadowsPlus%5D.zip/file

It's also worth noting that this appears to work fine with Nati's "The New Class" re-balancing hack, though since that hack adds a header, it has to be removed prior to applying this or the decompressor.

What, you think that after all these years I've suddenly abandoned ship? And right at the end, with but a few lines of text remaining?

I may be slower than a sloth, but hey, I'm steady too.

;D Definitely appreciate the work you've put into this. It's got to feel good to finally see it all coming to fruition!

This is one of those titles I remember seeing blurbs about in gaming mags back in the 90's. Alongside the likes of Seiken Densetsu 3 and Tales of Phantasia, the young me figured I'd never get to play these games in English. I'll be raising a glass to you all when this release hits!

Congrats on the release! It's a pleasure playing through this gem again - definitely one of the best games of its type.

Thanks for your dedication in sticking with this project

It's awesome to hear that things are shaping up! You've clearly had a lot on your plate, so I appreciate you taking the time to update us at all. Really looking forward to seeing this gem playable in English after all these years.
