I'm going to try to get a hold of Kozakurainko and invite them back to boards he/she seems to be very talented. Judging the reviews people left for his/her first submissions its no wonder he/she didn't submit anymore work.

I'm not sure how reviews like that are even approved, he/she translated an NES game to Japanese that was an FDS only release in Japan so if people in Japan want they can now put it on a real cart and play it just like we do when people translate Japanese only games to English.  I think the golden rule should apply to reviews if you don't have any thing nice to say or some real good advice and what could be done to make it better then you probably shouldn't say anything at all.

Is it considered "translating" when you would probably just gonna port JP texts from the FDS version into the NES version? 

I'm pretty sure that's what I stated I was going to do!!!!!!!!!!

There is still a way to translate it, but that involves changing the mapper and expanding the rom so that the game pulls the Japanese characters from an extra PPU page and/or the ROM. It's a major assembly hack.

I guess what I should have said was add the alphabet to the rom so that it is viewable in the PPU viewer of FCEUX as you need both English and Japanese text. I chose the Zelda 1 (J) rom font because it looks nicer than the FDS font. And yes I just plan on transferring all the text from the FDS version. It should be pretty simple as the English text is longer so there should be plenty of room. I know how to edit the rom, I just don't know how to make it viewable in the PPU.

I need some help adding the Japanese Alphabet to the PPU viewer of Zelda 2, any help would be much appreciated. Some of you may or may not know but Zelda 2 was never released on a famicom cartridge.

I would like to copy the Alphabet from Zelda 1 (Jap) to Zelda 2, thanks

I'm not that familiar with the Genesis, but some games will not load when the Genesis is attached to the Sega CD such as Double Dragon 1 and Shadow of the Beast 1. They just load a black screen, but Shadow of the Beast 2 works just fine and it was developed by the same company as part 1. I have done some digging in the forums and couldn't find anything. Just curious if this could be a simple fix added to the Roms.

In the FCEUX emulator when you open the hex editor the title screen and the name stage screen are in the NES MEMORY HEX which I am not sure if you can edit or if there are any tools out there King Mike would probably be able to help you more than I could.

You can edit the NES MEMORY in the FCEUX but you can't save it. One thing I did notice is that when replacing letters it doesn't like it when you use FD for a blank space make sure you use 00 until you get to FD

It seems there are no good dumps of this game to be downloaded anywhere on the net every place I found had the same bad dump. So I had a friend dump his and send it to me,then I was able to fix the issue.


I'm not sure how much space you have to work with, when it comes to adding more text. I know I had very little when it came to the first Zelda game.

The best advice I can give you it to save it for where its needed most, and steal it from where its not needed like towns people saying Hello could be Hi instead.

Let me know if you need any help and make sure you use the current patch for editing

Zelda II was never released on a famicom cart only fds. I would like to change that, would be easier to extract the gba rom than translating the NES rom.

Huffman compression of the overworld room text could save about 375 bytes (compressed text being ~575 bytes shorter minus 151 bytes for Huffman tree and ~50 bytes for Huffman code), which seems like a worthwhile gain on a script that's only 1366 bytes to start with.

I think that would be plenty but what about the underworld

My goal when I started this project was to imitate the NES version as close as possible. I also knew that no matter what I did people would complain, so instead of trying too please everybody else I just went with what made me happy.

What is most important is that all the major groundwork has been completed and I believe someone out there with more technical knowledge of this game than myself will eventually solve the problem with the space limitations and eventually we will have a 100% accurate NES translation. But it had to start somewhere!!!!!!!

As I have stated before if you feel that you can improve this hack, please do so.  

I changed the Title screen because of a translation error on my part

Your is spelled wrong on purpose, because of space limitations, if there were 2 extra bytes for an apostrophe and an E, I would have spelled it correctly. Just be thankful it wasn't UR.

I don't think its a big deal because there are a ton of NES games with spelling errors, Double Dragon 3 probably being the worst

Here is a side by side comparison 1st quest ending of the FDS version and the NES version and the one I translated.



As stated earlier in this thread there is no extra space in this rom, therefore I had to make due with what I had to work with, is it great NO, but I don't think its all that bad either!
(notice how Link and Zelda disappear in the FDS version after they hold up the two pieces of triforce)

2ND quest ending, the only thing added was (END OF "ZELDA 1") and I changed the letter Y because it looked funny

I'm almost finished, I just have to play through both worlds one more time. When I am finished I will probably never play this game again lol



April 17, 2017, 06:10:41 am - (Auto Merged - Double Posts are not allowed before 7 days.)After playing through the whole game two times I have found no errors, I made a few small changes to the font of (the Letter Y and the number 4).

   

I will submit this in the next few days its going to take some time to write the read me file. I have a lot of info I want to document incase anybody wants too modify it in the future, thanks.
