News Submissions / Re: Translations: Policenauts for PSX released

I've said it before, and it seems appropriate to repeat it now....

The art (yes ART!) of translation is all about translating what's being said, not what's being said. In other words, if you look at a string of words and grammar and translate each individual thing, you will fail. Miserably. When translating, there are two things that NEED to be kept in mind: the translation needs to convey all the information the original does, and the translation needs to speak with the same characterization as the original.

As an example, when translating dialogue you look at what the sentence is saying, not just at what the words are saying. Once you know what the point of that line of dialogue is--what information is being literally conveyed, you then need to look at how it's being said. This is especially important in games without spoken dialogue, as the player can't try to get emotion or characterization from the vocals (as there aren't any).

How does all this apply to Policenauts? Take the snipped DS posted. I would likely have erred on the side of including some of the stuff that was snipped. It's a personal preference, and one that every translator must figure out for themselves. Some prefer the more heavily localized route, others do not. That said, however, Marc absolutely NAILED the tone of the dialogue. Reading the text gives a ton of insight into the character just by speech pattern and word choice. I do not think it could have been done better in that regard. Seriously. Well done!

Something else to keep in mind is that one cannot judge a game translation solely on the video subtitles. I believe it was mentioned before, but there are certain constraints one is under when subtitling that don't really exist when all one has to worry about are boxes of text.

Anyway, rant over, etc. Suffice it to say that this translation is a brilliant job. Yes, there are some things I likely would have done differently, and other things that DS would have done differently, but show me two translators who would do a game exactly the same way and I'll see about getting you some tickets for a ski vacation in Ye Olde Subterranean Land of Fire and Brimstone. Marc clearly understands the essence of translation (and with him being a professional tranlator, I'd sure hope so), and I don't think anyone playing the game is going to have to worry about lost in translation type stuff.

Good on ya, Policenauts team!

Wow. I attended a security webcast today, and they talked about the HyperVM thing, and all the stuff that was lost. My first thought was "gee, I wonder if that's what happened to RHDN." Seems it was. i wouldn't feel too bad, NC. There were hundreds of thousands of accounts that were completely unrecoverable. The fact that RHDN is back up and running at all with any kind of restore is pretty amazing.

When you're burning the image, select the .cue file. Heck, I pick the .cue file when I play the game in pSX. I haven't burned off a disc and tried it in my console, though. I'm wondering if something is going on with your edit. I ripped a .bin/cue from my premium box disc using UltraISO, then just ran premiumbox.bat. It worked like a charm.

I gues double-check what you changed, and make sure that you really do have enough HDD space?

Should you be getting a 'cd-tool.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.' message?

I'd imagine not. Does it happen before, during, or after the patching process? If it happens at the end, then it's possible that the iso may have been patched anyway?

Holy mother of updates! Awesome!

Why didn't you quote the entire thing? If you did, you would have known I'm in no hurry to understand the plot. Under normal circumstances, I would jump at the chance no matter who translated it, but since this isn't exactly new to me, I'm in no hurry to play this.

Because the quoted statement is what I was attacking, as it exemplifies a sizable problem this community has in regards to new blood. Whether you're in a hurry to play it or not, you're waiting specifically (and imply exclusively) for Gideon's.

From your statements, you imply that Gideon's will automatically be better because his games have (and I quote) "that extra polish to them." You're pretty much saying that you'll play any version Gideon puts out over anything anyone else puts out, just because he's Gideon. If that is NOT how you think, then by all means expand on or correct your statements.

The perception that the vets automatically put out the best stuff is incredibly naive and generally idiotic. It pervades this topic. I do not dispute that the vets generally do put out good stuff, but to discount a version by anyone else is detrimental to the community as a whole.

That's what's so disappointing here. People aren't coming in saying "great, but I don't really want to play the game." People are coming in and saying that they want to play the game, but are just waiting for Gid's patch. Instead of this topic being about this patch and the awesome people who took the time and effort to put it together, it's become focused on a completely differnt version with no discernable ETA. It's a real slap in the face to these people.

This is the coldest reaction to a translation patch release in a long time. Where's the love?

Agreed... Quite sad... All these responses and it doesn't look like anybody has even tried it out. It must be terrible if it doesn't have the name of an accomplished hacker attached to it...  ::)

We do trust Gideon more. I myself am waiting for his translation rather than use this from some guy I've never heard of.

What gets me is that once upon a time, Gideon was some guy nobody had ever heard of. People seem to forget that. So, nobody has heard of these people. So what? Just because you don't know who they are doesn't mean they can't turn out a great patch. Give the bloody thing a chance before assuming that someone else can do it better.  ::)

Comparing the number of posts in this topic versus the ToP release topic is...enlightening  :P

I have a pair of GeForce 7800GTX cards in my computer. I love the things. 256MB a piece, and can be SLI'd. Supports composite, S-video, and component. Outputs at the max res of my HDTV, too. 19xx something. If you want 512MB in a single card, there are the newer GeForces as well.

After a mere hour and a half of playtime or so, I have but one thing to say:

SEX IN A CAN!!!  :woot!:

Well, now I know what I'm doing for the rest of the night. Thanks a ton!

Boo, what's the point in Christmas presents if you spoil the surprise  :P

phat lewtz

Oh, man. On the one hand, I want that PSP for Christmas. On the other hand, I want to play this.... d'oh!
