ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: The BIG list of randomizers!!

Wow. Now that really is impressive!

Programming / Re: C++: array indexing issues
« on: February 07, 2018, 02:17:58 pm »
Maybe a dumb question but programing errors are often too dumb for our own good: do you initialize WriteIndex before using it, as you initialize Write?

It still sounds dumb to me.

They forbade the Al-bheds to speak Spira's language? o_O
How do they do that? It seems way easier to me to murder a group of people than to forbid them to talk in a specific language. Plus several Al-bheds (Rikku or Rin) speak normally without problem.

Tidus still explodes by kicking a blitzball bomb. Why? Who? WTF?

That whole "summoners are actually gods" comes out of nowhere from my point of view. Ok, they have the ability to send the deads and summon magical incarnations of faiths (which is pretty badass already), but they need the consent for both of them (if the deads are reluctant to being sent, we need to beat them hard beforehand to weaken them). Besides, what's that gratuitous overbid of "summoners can not only control pyreflies but also create things out of nowhere" ?... And, as for Vegnagun in X-2 (well, there's at least an attempt of explanation for this one), it's very convenient to have a all-powerful being that didn't show up for 1000 years and apparently farmed tomatoes this whole time.

The resurrection of Tidus was very dumb in X-2 already, IMO. Maybe the faiths can indeed bring him back in Spira (there are faiths of Tidus and his whole family among them, so it's not inconcevable at all). But then, why didn't they do that at the end of FFX? They were not grateful enough to Yuna for that or what?

Also, I think the youtuber didn't understand what the "trivialization of death" argument means. How I get it, it's a matter of the importance and the impact of the deaths, not their commonness. When the party kills Seymour, it's a huge shift of the situation, when we learn that Mika or Auron are dead, it matters (Auron being dead is implied quite soon, so we can guess it and pay attention to the clues about it). Maechen being dead is the best character development of FFX-2 from my point of view ("development" in sense of "giving flesh to it"). So yes, death is omnipresent in Spira, but never trivial.

While we're talking about compiling requests
This guy got it all  :police:

FF9 Vent:

Did anyone ever fix the glitch where you can get the Gold Chocobo before the airship, but then it just automatically gives you the airship?

Isn't that an hoax? Have you got yourself into this situation, because that bug doesn't exist in most versions I know.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: How to use a romhack?
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:43:10 am »
The API and programs that Paradox made for PPF file bugs in certain circumstances. Sometimes, the PPF files are somewhat "corrupted" and ppf-o-matic will keep running once it has ended its job. That's not an harmful corruption ; the ppf file is just not well terminated.

From my experience, your game is patched correctly. It always take less than a few seconds to patch a game from this generation (most of them are instant).

IX: There's a speedup hack for the battle speed, outside of that nothing really of note.  There's one floating around here that restores some cut scenes, but it's kinda meh and sometimes doesn't completely fit with the rest of the game.

Both the speedup and the cutscene restoration hacks are really minor. The most consistent FF9 hacks are my Alternate Fantasy and Landon Ray's Unleashed. There's also Vir who makes mods related to the stat-maxing runs.

Also, Landon Ray has made a difficulty hack for Castlevania SotN. I found it fun, but since I played a regular run not so long ago, I got bored midway.

People gotta stop asking for changes to FF7. Are we expected to rerender the 3d cutscenes? They won't make sense if Aeris doesn't die.

Maybe the NES version of FF7 could be hacked. Maybe.
She only wanted to go to the swimming pool and relax !
However, there are plenty of tools for modding FF7 (the PC version at least), and several people already trying to hack Aeris back in the game and make it credible story-wise (
Nothing as tryphon suggested though. A 1 character end-game with Aeris would be pretty tough I guess.

You may not have downloaded the right dll. There are few of them with really close names.
This one worked for me :

Once you have the dll, put it in the same folder as the randomizer.
In order to launch the tool, you also need either to modify the .bat file (right-click -> open with... -> choose a text editor) and input your ROM filename, either to put directly your Dragon Warrior ROM file in the same directory and rename it "dw1.nes".

News Submissions / Re: ROM Hacks: What if... General Leo had lived?

I know well the minute 0 from FF7. There's a hint about how important the lifestream will be, but nothing about Sephiroth's stupidity or smartness :p

You could say Lifestream is strong enough to prevent damage from happening, but that would make Sephiroth's attempt sound quite stupid in the first place.

And the problem with that is.... ?

On-topic, I don't really know why General Leo is popular. I've only played FF6 once, but apart from the moment he decides to turn against Kefka, I have no memories of him at all. What does he do besides that?

Gaming Discussion / Re: Does anyone know what game this is?
« on: July 12, 2015, 06:39:57 pm »
That makes me think I do have a game from when I was a kid and never retrieved.
It was on computer, at the same period as Snood and Lemmings, and it was kinda looking like "The incredible machine". The purpose was to place several pieces so that a cannonball would travel to the goal. Most of the time, pieces only made a 90° turn to the cannonball but some had more special effects.

Any thoughts?

ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: Hex Editors - Opinions Please
« on: February 23, 2015, 12:32:47 pm »
He doesn't know the size between the relevant values. I don't know if wildcards handle that (I personnally use a python script when the search is a little tricky, typically this sort of things).
Indeed, that's a part of the point ^^
That's why I talked about regexp, because the situation can be very specific (the example I gave is not something I'm struggling about right now but I encountered situations like this before). So it's better to have a good amount of possibilities.

I must be blind but I never saw wildcard features in hex editor. Maybe I've just only used poor hex editors... Thanks for the answers !

ROM Hacking Discussion / Re: Hex Editors - Opinions Please
« on: February 22, 2015, 06:06:39 am »
When I was under Linux, I used Hex Edit because it was simple and wine-compatible.
Now, I'm using HHD Hex Editor Neo (free version) mainly because its interface is neat and it is fast. It lacks a bunch of features though in its free version...

I should really try others ^^

One question : sometimes, I would like to make a search with holes in it. For example, I know the the attack bonus of 3 weapons (let's say 5, 10 and 20), I know they are sorted in this order and I suspect the weapons data to be of a constant-size.
So, a search with holes in it would be 'Search( 5, [eventually something], 10, [eventually something of the same size], 20 )'. The "something" is filled with other weapon datas (its sprite ID, who can use it...).
A kind of regexp search, but a binary one.

I didn't find that feature in hex editors I tried. I had to code an hex viewer myself to do so. Do you know one?

Personal Projects / Re: Final Fantasy IX - General hacking tool

I watched in the inside of FF7 like 10 minutes one time. I can't really say.
But I saw some of qhimm wiki's informations and it does seem different. The variable management is made by only 1 opcode (it is then a big thing to interpret). FF9 is also way more byte-oriented than FF7. The 10 minutes I spent on FF7 was about the item's ID (which are 7 or 9-bits long if I recall well, or something like that). There are some cases in which the length of arguments or ID is not round in FF9 but that's quiet rare overall.

By the way, the update has been approved. That took less time than I thought ^^

Thank you Celice (I'm a bit late  :P )

I updated the tool ; it should take some few hours for the update to be approved. You can now fully edit the game's script !
You can squarely code using the game's script.
Not everything is still understood about the different functions (opcodes) of the script, and it's is really hard to actually do something completely different from the original game, but that became possible.

If you're interested, you can check my last post on qhimm. I tried to explain a bit how it works and also gave an example of what you can do with it. You can download this example here. It's a patch for the first field of the CD 1 in the US version of the game (though I applied the .hws to the french version and it worked just as well).

I'm quiet happy I finally made it that far. Editing the script is something I had in my mind since soooooo long time !  ;D

You would have problems to implement it :

Also, you would have to rethink the way Ultimecia's Castle gameplay works, because it is important there to have exactly 6 characters to have 2 teams of 3. That's a problem arising even if you don't fanfiction his recruitment.

This one is hilarious (the DW fan animation)

Personal Projects / Final Fantasy IX - General hacking tool
« on: August 05, 2014, 06:23:40 am »
Hi there ! I'm not particulary active on RH but I've uploaded some stuff here so I guess I should at least present them ^^'

I'm working on Hades Workshop, a Final Fantasy IX modding tool. It is quiet a big project and I don't know if I will ever decide when it's finished  ::)
However, it is already usable and can edit things like :
  • Spells the party can cast,
  • Supporting abilities the party can use,
  • Commands the party has,
  • Default stats and equipments of the party members,
  • Items' features,
  • Items sold in shops,
  • Statistics & attacks of enemies,
  • Text, dialogs and charmap,
  • Game's script,
  • Battle Scenes' models exporting & importing.

It has been used by Thisguyaresick2 to make his Save The Queen patch, for instance.

Since that's basically a direct binary editor, there are some limitations mainly about the size of datas ; a lot of texts can't be lengthened a lot for example. But I also took that in my advantage and made it so it can edit all versions of the game and even pass the datas from one version to another.

I'm also involved in finding the unused dialogs of the game. I just uploaded a patch to enable some of them that have already been scripted. You can find it here :
US version
French version

Most of time, these unused dialogs were translated, but that's not the case of all of them. One of the dialogs in the patch is in this case : the translation from japanese to english has been gently made by luksy from the Qhimm's forum. I wrote the french translation with the help of his.

There are other unused dialogs in the game. I've just not been able to unlock them yet (or they have never been scripted and only texts remain). Here is a list of some of the most interesting ones of them :

Alexandria [Over the roofs...] :
Puck “So, Vivi... Is this your first time in Alexandria?”
Vivi “Uh...  Um...  Yeah. I bought my ticket from a moogle wearing a hat...”
Puck “Bad luck!  If I ever find that moogle, I'll hurt him plenty!”
Vivi “Uh... Thanks...”
Puck “Alright!  Just a little farther 'til we can see the stage!”

Ruined Prima Vista [Steiner's bitterness] :
Steiner “Those bastards... If they plan to demand a ransom, they're wasting their time.  I'll see to it that they receive nothing!”
Steiner “Wretched thieves... I'll see them all hanged!”
Steiner “Those bastards... They will never get away with this!”

Observatory Mountain [Good and Evil with Grampa Morrid] :
Steiner “Alexandria, of course! Burmecia started the war, and we lost our king as a result.”
Morrid “Many wars were fought before the Lindblum Airship Revolution.”
Morrid “Alexandria intiated some of the wars against Burmecia. Now, can you tell me who was right or wrong?”
Steiner “I-I am not talking about the past! I am talking about the future!”
Morrid “What will you do if Alexandria starts a war?”
Steiner “When will the cargo ship arrive!?”

Gizamaluke's Grotto [Entering Burmecia] :
Burmecian Soldier “This is the Gizamaluke's Grotto. It is Burmecia's border.”
Burmecian Soldier “No one is allowed inside without the king's permission.”

Cleyra [Meeting with the King and the High Priest] translated from japanese by luksy :
Freya “It has been some time, Your Majesty.”
King of Burmecia “Ah, Freya, well met.”
King of Burmecia “The High Priest and I welcome you.”
High Priest of Cleyra “My Lady.”
High Priest of Cleyra “It would appear that this predicament no longer concerns Burmecia alone.”
Freya “I understand, Your Holiness.”
Freya “And yet...”
Freya “I fear my strength alone may not suffice.”
King “Freya...I know what troubles you.”
King “I must apologize for earlier.”
King “Can you ever forgive me?”
King “No! Of course you cannot.”
King “But the fate of the people of Burmecia now hangs by but a thread.”

Occupied Lindblum Castle [Reaching Cid] :
Don't get caught by the enemy!
Jump out when she looks away!
Man “The regent is waiting for you at the Base Level.”
Man “The enemy is busy loading supplies. Go down on the lift, now!”
Man “Once you get on the lift, my comrades will take care of the rest.”
Zidane “So, I just take the lift to the Base Level without getting caught?”
Zidane “Piece o' cake! Leave everything to me.”
Is anybody there...?
A tail?
Oh, it's only a cat...
Zidane (Wow, that was a close one.)
Man “(You idiot!)”
Man “Whatever you do, don't get caught!”
Man “What's wrong? The regent is waiting at the Base Level.”
Man “Go now, or you'll get caught!”
Zidane “I gotta run while she's looking away.”

Occupied Lindblum Castle [The Ancient World Map] :
Regent Cid “That is a national treasure of Lindblum!”
Regent Cid “It was passed down through my ancestors, since the days of the first regent.”
Regent Cid “It was probably made before our continent was covered in the Mist...”
Regent Cid “That is an ancient map of the entire world!”

Alexandria [Balloon Mini-game] translated from french by me :
Girl “You want to play with us?”
Girl “You've got some time to gather balloons and give them to the boys behind us!”
Girl “You get more time depending of the color of the balloon that you bring.”
Green → 5 more seconds
Yellow → 10 more seconds
Blue → 15 more seconds
Red → 30 more seconds
Girl “All the three of us have a balloon and we are somewhere on the square.”
Girl “Well... Start!”
Boy “X more seconds! You have Y points!”

Final [The 2 worlds' fusion] :
The Iifa Tree could not be stopped...
Gaia and Terra's fusion
caused global chaos,
destroying many cities and
taking many lives...

Thanks for reading. If you find any bug or have a suggestion, please let me know it  :)
If you are courageous, you can also browse the Qhimm's topic : that's where I wrote most of things about Hades Workshop and FFIX hacking (I would like to fill your wiki, but I need to find the courage for that ^^).
