You're right that it's not just "く". It's half of "りょく”.

Big update as we are ready to go into patch alpha testing.



TLDR; Download alpha IPS patch. Please post feedback on this thread, msg me, or join discord chat for fastest responses.

We're now at 100% story strings translated and focusing on editing and testing. That's not to say we won't revisit translations as there are a couple that I'm not so certain about but every string has had at least one translation pass.

Thanks to @ifightdragons we've also had an edit pass on the script to fix grammatical errors, improve flow, and in general fix all the terrible mistakes I made.

I'm sure there will be things that don't make sense and need to change but enough is there to start wider testing.

We've updated
  • 100% of the story and re-inserted text
  • All cutscenes
  • Title screen
  • Battle screen
  • Select menu
  • Password screen
  • Debug menu
  • Ending




What's left
  • Credits
  • Makitoshi game
  • Improve title screen graphics
  • Check that all strings fit within the game window

  • Double check some translations

Big thank you for all those offering to help. The best help right now would be to download the alpha1 IPS patch and play it. If you run into any problems then feel free to msg me, respond on this thread, or join discord chat for fastest responses. We'll be keeping a tally of current issues on the project document.

This project has been a lot of fun and researching this game has been such a good primer on GameBoy hacking that I plan to start a blog series.

Some things that I plan to cover in the series
  • Finding text and tiles
  • Adding new tiles and updating the script
  • Creating a table file, control codes, and extracting the script
  • Pointer tables and how to use them
  • Using breakpoints
  • Things I wish I had known
  • ... and a lot more

None of these will be new insights to the community but I hope that it'll be a fun resource that has a central theme and is really approachable by anyone. I've already written a couple of these and could certainly use some editing help if anyone is interested.

Now, let's do some specific responses
  • @Viewer - Would love for you to play the patch and work with @fightdragons on any edits.
  • @aqualung - I'm open to looking at RPG hen but only if I have someone else to help translate. There is a lot more text and I'll easily burn out if I do it on my own. Luckily that games text is uncompressed and easy to modify.
  • @MiYaku - No big translation requests right now but maybe RPG hen in the future?
  • @ifightdragons - Keep being awesome.

Thanks all. DTE could be interesting if we start running low on space but we still have some head room. I won't really know if we need it till the script translation is done. Right now, I've translated about 65% of the text but what's left is pretty hard and slow moving for me.

If anyone is up for editing help then I could certainly use it. The project doc is here and you should be able to view it anonymously. Just shoot me a PM and I'll add you as an editor.

Been working on a translation of Masakari Densetsu Kintaro Action Hen (マサカリ伝説 金太郎アクション編) Gameboy for the last couple of weeks and it's finally starting to come together. The game is a story driven platformer that draws on Japanese folklore in many funny ways. It was already playable even if you didn't know Japanese but I hope that once the translation is finished that everyone will enjoy it even more. 

Game text, graphics, and font have all been updated to varying degrees. Lots of stuff still needs to happen so volunteers are welcome.

I'm very open to revisions especially since I now have a better idea of how much space is available within the ROM.





I could use some help with graphics as that's not my main skill, editing, and translation (http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=30855.0)

Big thanks to zuvi's game room (https://twitter.com/zuvittonan) for letting me know about this game.

Looking for someone to help with Masakari Densetsu Kintaro Action Hen on Gameboy. I've already translated about 40% of the strings and would love to get help on the longer strings, validating what I have translated, and making sure it stays true to the folk tale.

Slower progress finishing things up. I updated the text for the mid way cut scene using the regular tile table and this is what happened



Less then stellar ... I know. Why? Well lets look at the tile table in bgb.



Turns out that this portion of the game decides to overwrite the English tiles unlike any other part of the game that I've seen. So I'm going to have to dive into the assembly code and likely overwrite the Japanese tiles. I really hope I don't have to futz with the main tile loader routine that *everything* else uses.

If anyone has a better suggestion then do let know.

On the positive side I was getting frustrated not being able to skip between levels and I found out where in RAM the game keeps the next level to load pre Team/Level Intro. 0xC3C6 is now my best friend.

This continues to be a good and light weight intro into GameBoy rom hacking.

Happy to announce my work on Nekketsu KouKou Doji-Boru-Bu (熱血高校ドッジボール部).

Most of the easy to find text has been translated.

Thus far this is an in-place hack with no assembly tweaks. As a result, it's a very liberal translation that hopefully
captures the essence of the original within the limits of character count. The game itself is so-so but you can't
beat the personality of a kunio-kun game.

Yeah, thats what i'm using right now and it works nicely for Genesis roms but acts very weird and inconsistent with Sega CD images. As per the notes above, the 68k debugger window output stops before getting to where the demo roms i'm tinkering with PC is at. Maybe I should message 'g8z et al' and see if they know why its being weird.

Scratch that. I had been debugging under Gens 2.12a without tracer ... now i've switched over to Gens 2.11 which has tracer support and seems to be logging past the issue that was seeing.

Programming / Decent Sega CD Debugger

Does anyone have a good lead on a good Sega CD debugger? I'm thinking something like Regen but with SegaCD support.

Gens seems to have support for it but the 68k debugger window only goes to x20015 when the demo rom i'm working is at x203710 and it's labeling most operations as 'Bad Opcode' which I find strange.

Really hopping I wont have to write my own just to work on a rom :(

Great job guys. Do you have any write up of the tools and process you used? I'd love to see how it was done as I'm a huge Phantasy Star fan and I just got Generation 2 in the mail. Would love to tinker with it for this.
