I'm interested in translating Marusa no Onna.  :D

Molestation? In a Nintendo game?
I get the feeling there could be something else a little more appropriate for the situation.

Something like "creeper" or "weirdo" might fit better.

Here you go:

MUM
「なにを シミジミと
 みているの? おうせつセットよ
 ただの。

MUM:
What are you staring at?
It's just furniture.

ふんすいですが、
みずは でていません。(A fountain with no water. Go figure!)

This one is fine.

『みんなの こうえん』 (Sign at the park)
やかんの ひとりあるきは
チカンに ちゅうい!
と、かいてあります。;

"Public Park"
It says, "Watch out for perverts
when walking alone at night!"

じてんしゃです。
もしや.. と、おもった
かもしれませんが、のれません。; This textbox appears when you view a bicycle lying on the ground in the park.

It's a bicycle.
I wonder if...?
Nope, I can't ride it.

みずのみば です。
こういうところから
でてくる みずは、
てつクサくて マズいです。;

It's a drinking fountain.
The water that comes out
of it smells like iron. Yuck!

『トレ―ドきぼう、
 あなたの サンダ―を
 ぼくの マナトットと!』と
 かいたかみが はってあります。;

There's a piece of paper
stuck to it that says,
"Trade request:
Your Thunder for my
Manatotto!"

ずいぶん ちいさな
テ―ブルセットです。
あくまでも かざりのようです。;

It's a small table and chair set.
Seems to be mainly for show.

カ―ドヒ―ロ―
いがいのカ―ドも

Looks like they deal in all
types of cards except Card Hero.

For the first pair, I'd go with:

偵察部隊 Recon Unit(s)
潜入工作部隊 Espionage Unit(s)

Reconnaissance is a general term for information gathering, while espionage is more specific and implies some degree of infiltration.

For the second pair:

強襲降下部隊 Assault Paratroops
強行降下部隊 Shock Paratroops

I couldn't find many examples of 強行 used in a military context, but it seems similar to 突撃, so I'd go with "Shock Paratroops."

Personal Projects / Re: Romancing Saga 3 English re-translation [WIP]
« on: October 02, 2017, 10:43:08 pm »
The project is not dead, paused or stalled, just on holiday :D
Both Eien and me came back to work recently and I tried to insert the main dialogue script, which is fully translated. I found a problem, there must be some weird character in the third script file (the one in bank $FC) but I could't find it yet. As soon as I insert it, I'll post some new screenshots.

Yep, I've finished the main script and am now working on the supplemental text. This includes stuff like the Trading Minigame and Mikhail's Ruling Minigame. I'm currently buying a house and planning an interstate move, so working on RS3 is actually a nice way to relieve stress.
Spoiler:
Buying a house sucks.

Once magno gets everything inserted, though, the game will need some serious playtesting. I'd also be interested in translating the Bokuno hack sometime in the future.

Please do! Here are the two blocks of Outlanders that I dumped with the work I've done so far.

I'm done with the Outlanders script. This is probably a dumb question, but where do I post it?

Hrmm, this is interesting. There's no persimmon item, but there is "ほしがし". The FAQ writer called this a "pastry" and probably taking a cue from them, I translated it as "星菓子/Star Cake". However, if this were some other odd reading of "干し柿/ほしがき", perhaps this is dried persimmon?

Oops, I see what happened. The website I referenced incorrectly listed the item as 干し柿. After a bit of research, I found that ほしがし is 干し菓子, more commonly known as 干菓子 ("dry sweets"). My guess is the boy is planning to use the 干菓子 as an offering at the memorial service.

こうが is probably 黄河 (Yellow River/Huang He River).
きたはかば seems to be a play on 北酒場 (きたさかば), a famous Enka song. I would just transliterate it.

I would also leave the special attacks as transliterated. I can't make heads or tails of what they're supposed to be.  :(

10
Okay, let's tackle the items first.

じょうびょう is an alternate reading of じょうひょう(縄標), or "Rope Dart."

I would just translate しりたたき as "Paddle."

As for へぶんすたー and のろわーす, I think these are both cigarette brands. へぶんすたー is a play on セブンスター, but I have no clue what brand のろわーす is supposed to be. I'd transliterate it as "Norworth."

Onto the sentences:

れいのものは、いるかね?[ED]

I'm fairly sure that れいのもの is 霊の者 here. So a good translation would be, "Any spirits around?"

おかねを ごつごういたしましょう。[ED]

This is a fancy version of 金を都合しましょう, which means "I shall gather the money."
The only change I would suggest is to use "gather"/"provide you with" rather than "lend."

ちょうど おとうさんの ほうじなの。[ED]

This line is downright strange. It means, "Just in time for my late father's memorial service." Apparently it's triggered when you give someone hoshigaki (dried persimmons). I found some gamer bitching about it on their blog.

11
Hmm. As far as weapons/armor, I'd probably localize the names as much as possible. For example, you could translate せいりゅうとう as "Seiryuu/Qinglong Sword." Judging by the Chinese melee weapons section of Wikipedia, most Chinese weapons have some sort of English equivalent.  :)

I think it's awesome that you guys are working to translate all of these games! I finally have some free time, so I can help with translating "Time Stranger" and "Outlanders" if nobody minds.  :D

Thanks! :D I love these credits now. I assume it's the case, but are you okay with my "licensing" your translations under Creative Commons for use in non-commercial and derivative work? I'm planning to release the translated script for others to use freely.

Sure! I have no problem with that.

On a different note, I'd like confirmation on the following:

おじいちゃんに あっていく?[ED]
Going to see Grandpa?[ED]

おじいちゃんに あっていってよ。[ED]
Go see Grandpa.[ED]

Both of these lines look fine to me.

As for the localization stuff, I'd use "Jiang Shi" instead of "vampire" for two reasons: 1) Jiang Shi are distinctly different from Western vampires, and 2) I think the game's based on a Hong Kong comedy-horror film. It's definitely a matter of personal preference, though, so I'll leave it up to you.

I took a crack at the weird credits:

プログラマ さだもん と がーふあんくる

Programmers: Sadamon and Garfunkel
 (This one's fine.)

はかせ と その かよいづま

The Professor and His Long-Distance Wife

デザイナー あべる あべれば あべるとき

Designer(s): Fatty McFatfat

//あべる is apparently an alternate reading of 太る.

プランナー かある くらうざあ いのまた

Planner(s): Karl Klauser Inomata

サッキョク だんじり だんじり くむくむ

Composer(s): Danjiri Kum-Kum

//I think this name is a combination of Danjiri (from Danjiri Festivals) and Kum-Kum, the protagonist of a really old anime.

ガンバッタ みにもん ぼん おーちゃんず

Special Thanks: Minimon Bon Ochanzu

くりながサナタール($30)マサユキ

Masayuki "Thanatar" Kurinaga

//I think "Thanatar" is a reference to RuneQuest.

だめいじでざいなあ かーさき

Damage Designer Kasaki

かきこみジユウな てっちゃん

Scribblin' Tecchan

べじたぶるどらんかあひろりん

Vegetable Drinker Hirorin

しかけにんたちとうさぎちゃん[ED]
Bunny and the Gang

Edit:

As for the two item names, you're overthinking とくべつれいのふく. It's definitely 特別霊の服. I'd go all SaGa Frontier and translate it as "Spiritwear." ;)

たまごだん is a bit trickier. As a suffix, 弾 is pretty generic. It can mean "bullet," "bomb," "flare," or even "grenade." More importantly, though, chicken eggs are said to stun or harm Jiang Shi. I would just go with "Egg" or "Hen's Egg" in this case.

Script Help and Language Discussion / Re: Time Stranger dialogue
« on: August 07, 2017, 12:12:01 pm »
As for the rest... I'm really thinking that if someone else wants to translate it all and doesn't have anything else to do, I wouldn't be against it. :D I mean, maybe my heart's just not in it right now, but that could change. I just feel like this kind of text is a bit trickier for me than some other games I've seen, where it's mostly dialogue spoken in plain Japanese. And there's a lot of text here.

I'm really interested in this game, but I don't have a lot of free time at the moment. I can offer you moral support, though. All-kana games are a bitch to translate, and all-kana text adventure games are even worse. Try to keep at it, and think of this as a good learning experience.  :)

いぎりすについて

20じいないでのべよ<END>

--------------------------------------

らんぷのせいって

しってるかい?<END>

I think the first set of lines is:

イギリスについて
20字以内で述べよ

"Describe England to me in 20 characters or less."

I think the second set is:

ランプの精って
知ってるかい?

Where ランプの精 refers to the Genie of the Lamp from the "Arabian Nights" stories.
I'm not sure if this is a throwaway line or relevant to the game's plot.

It looks like the OCR IDed some kanji incorrectly. For example, it "misread" 局地強襲特務部隊 as 局地強襲膳繍部隊.

I don't mind helping you translate the rest of the manual, but is it possible for you to provide scans of the pages in question? That way we can rule out any OCR errors.  :P

18
Dissecting the kanji, I would say something along the lines of 'Close-range assault unit, Saiga24'.

I think your translation is pretty spot-on.

That said, 膳繍部隊 doesn't make sense. I would double check the kanji printed in the manual. Maybe it's actually 前線部隊 or something?

I'm old-fashioned and a bit lazy, I guess. The camera is the most familiar way for me. I'm the type of person who sticks with what he knows, even if it might not be the best method.

I guess that's why I'm just a translator and not a hacker.

I'm not a big fan of built-in screen recording in emulators myself. I tend to use Microsoft Expression Encoder instead. IIRC it's free and records both audio and video.

BTW, the footage of LB3 looks great! I love the in-dialogue pauses. :3

Good day Garrett aka Pennywise. I am very interested in your progress of translating Dead Zone for NES.

I looked up Dead Zone because I was curious, and the whole script is in katakana. Sweet Jesus.  :'(
