This is a sample of mml2m64, a Music Macro Language importer that produces custom music in the
Super Mario 64 / Zelda 64 (and next release also Mario Kart 64). This song is from Gimmick! (NES):

mml2m64 can be downloaded in the utilities section of this site (direct link -> http://www.romhacking.net/utils/589/).

VERY cool, I will say her running animation looks a lot like walking, aka the other characters running movements are more exaggerated.

Yea, it's suppose to look like a quick walking.  Running in a robe is slightly challenging for a princess.

Edit: 7th Letter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIbmyPCYgfg Big update on it with massive bug cut-downs.

couldn't she float like magus? I mean I understand it's hard to run in a robe but it looks funny when you are moving faster than you look like you should.

Floating wouldn't really be with Schala's personality at all.  She's one of the tougher ones to think of how she'd run.

Spiderball sucks . . . Only decided to use it in Singularity because of the incredible demand for it (and because it was an unexpected side effect of another code I was making).  When Alliance comes out, spiderball will be gone forever and all that will be left is magnetball (which I prefer much more).

As for how long I've been working on this.... I've been working on the ASM for Alliance for years now (2005, I believe), but only off and on.  It was only recently when I decided to create a trilogy instead, because I had too many conflicting ideas for one hack.  They will share a lot of the ASM and probably some other things, but will all have different purposes.

Bahhh.... Just remembered that this is the video thread and I responded without showing a vid:

All the new Espers, some I'm pleased with and some they're just "meh".
Titles are links to their respective videos.

Ultima (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-A132brBTM)
I like Ultima a lot, I believe most people who've seen the video do as well. I look at Bahamut being similar to Flare and Leviathan being similar to Holy. Both are pretty equal in damage and both are opposites. I believe "Ultima" is the balance and stronger between the two so that's why I implemented Ultima as a summon as well.
While I used the Ultima sprite from FFT:A, this is the actual "Ultima, the High Seraph" summon:
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ultima_%28Summon%29

Syldra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75To9AFxTUE)
I don't like the Syldra one that much to be honest, I feel as if I didn't do anything except replace the Tritoch sprite. (Which I did).
There are some blue lightning bolts from some cinematic scenes I'll most likely be replacing with. No more Tritoch animations, even though it's pretty similar(close) to FFV's Syldra.

Leviathan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG9A0iykSxA)
I like Leviathan kinda, I hope you guys feel I did him justice giving him a "FFIVish" feel. I wanted the "Water Edge" graphics because of how the animation seems similar to FFIV's Leviathan tsunami animation.
I can always change the water animations (Water Edge) to Wave although I don't want to mimic Bismark. Bismark won't be in my hack, he's being replaced by Leviathan.

Titan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJq0Aj_BYWk)
I like Titan the most because his feels the most "custom" out of all the Espers I've implemented. It's not just a sprite replacement like Syldra and Ultima are. I replaced Terrato for Titan, although I didn't use any of Terrato's animations except maybe the Esper coming out of the ground. I used "Quake" as the Esper attack animation.
Title: Re: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Gemini on September 30, 2009, 02:42:53 pm
To be honest, FFIV gfx on FFVI is like a punch in the eyes. You should seriously consider the idea of redoing Titan and Leviathan from scratch, or at least adapt them to look more FFVI-ish. On the other side, FFV sprites blend a lot better and don't feel like coming from another game.
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Dragonsbrethren on September 30, 2009, 02:53:35 pm
I've found that recoloring them to be darker, using some shades already used by FF6's sprites, is usually enough for them to blend in "good enough." They are done in a different style, though, and do stand out a bit no matter what.

Oh yeah, I never posted these here:

Post by: Zeemis on September 30, 2009, 03:17:55 pm
I am going for that feel that "these summons are from another game" instead of trying to make it seem like they were originally from FFVI. My hack "Final Fantasy VI: Revelations" takes two characters from every game excluding FF1 and anything over FF10.
Thanks for the comments guys. :)

Yea, it's been alive for awhile still.  Just never had the inspiration to work on it again until now.  I'm working hours on end to get the Dream Devourer part of the game done, seeing as that's the one I'm most inspired to do at the moment.  Then there comes the really annoying part of getting the new side-quests and endings for this.

Edit: Well that's a bitch slap the face.  I load the rom back up to check my event code, only to find over half of it has been randomly deleted.  I'm going to be spending 4+ hours now trying to fix everything..ugh..what a start to a day.

You have no idea how happy this makes me. I always loved the work You presented in the past and after some of the videos disappeared from Your youtube channel, I thought that this was it for Your work as well. I am really glad that this is not the case! ;)
Any idea why part of the event code said “bye bye”? I wish I could offer any help, but since I know so little about romhacking I would just create a bigger mess than before.
Anyway, You just revived a huge fan of Your work. ;) (That means I am now a Zombie? Pretty cool, huh?)

Probably something I did on accident when I was trying to futz around with something else.  I re-did the event and it looks even better now.  I'm on the final bit of the Dream Devourer event before the battle starts.  I'll probably get that done and work on the AI of it soon enough.

Ha!  First zombie fan!  But most of this stuff wouldn't even be possible if it wasn't for the previous help I got from MANY members at the Compendium before SE went psychotic.

Good to hear that the lost code did not demotivate You, and it even turned out better than before.
Yes, the furious fist of the s-word smashing down on Kajar Labs (ergo altruistic and creative fans) was a real shame. With that action the s-word lost me as a potential buyer of their future products for good. At the same time it is great to see that some, like You, still keep up that “dream”. ;)

1:23 - The game uses Magus' sprite sometimes?

1:24 - When you select "Turn back for now", wouldn't it be better to let one of the other characters argue with that choice, instead of just opening the dialog again (unless that doesn't happen automatically)?

2:28 - Who's saying that line?

Also, the order of lines after that... how about this?

- Magus: "Grr... I'm not finished with you yet!"
- party pops out of the orb and faces upwards
- Marle: "Magus!"
- Magus gets hit
- Marle: "Isn't that... Lavos?" ("Why is Schala with it" removed?)
- Schala: "W-what?! Myself... in Lavos? What is this?!"
- Magus: "I believe I told you... not to interfere!"
- Schala2: "Let all that once was fade into oblivion! I welcome the end of existence."
- Magus: "No, Schala!" etc.
- Magus gets hit, party goes upwards to Lavos
- Schala2: "Embrace your destruction! It is inevitable!"
- fight

Watching this was beyond exciting! Thank You! I still somehow have a problem of grasping this whole “Schala as a playable character”-awesomeness, for me it is just too epic to fully believe! ;)
1:24 - When you select "Turn back for now", wouldn't it be better to let one of the other characters argue with that choice, instead of just opening the dialog again (unless that doesn't happen automatically)?
If You really want to comment on the whole “turn back for now”-choice, how about just a comment from Schala (that means one has to have her in the party to get a reaction for choosing this choice). And I would not make it something extensive, maybe just a “Janus...” since she is the one most worried about Magus and that would express her worries very subtle about her little brother facing a powerful foe without her following him. And if she is the only one commenting on the decision that would somehow add dramatic value. Oh, I'm at it again, sorry. You're the artist, I already love it anyway, so I will love it no matter what! :)
Schala2
How about calling her “Schala DD” in the dialogue (like in the battle)?
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why the warp animations go into 16:9-format at the end?

Thank You Justin, what a great way to start a new day, with an exciting Chrono Trigger video!

Not all the dialogue has been properly changed and not all of her sprites have been completed quite yet, so there's bound to be some freaky looking things.

The order of the dialogue is set like this because it's exactly like the DS event.  But I'll change it around a bit as well.  In fact, I was going to do that anyhow because it seemed rather awkward!  Nice eye on that though and thank you for reminding me on that.  Going to be SUCH a hassle to get this though.  The thing on this though, what would they say when they're going to fight?  Or would they just move up, rip out weapons, and randomly start.

I have no idea on the time gate, I was wondering the same thing.  Probably either something freaky with an overlap of coding or that's just how CT was built.

How did you get a working 8x8 (or smaller?) VWF for the techniques and items? Nice touch.

Also, I think you should try and get the three fonts in the game (8x8, 8x8 VWF and 8x12 VWF) to match as much as possible. They kinda clash right now. >_>;

I have no idea really how all of this VWF coding even works nor do I plan on going through all of it just to figure it out.  Too much hassle to do at the moment.

Plus, the VWF is kind of boggy right now due to the coding or something, so it's best just to leave it right now unless we find some other method that works better.

I actually made a bold version of the 8x8 font for usage in the rest of the menu, but it was shot down because of something. I don't remember. What I most vividly remember is Justin saying "...but if we get more letters in the menu, then fuck yeah, we're using it."

The extra space for more letters was absolutely needed with how lengthy the descriptions people were giving everything.

This was very well done, but I have to comment again about font. That VWF looks nice and all, except at that time period when there's snow on the ground. You need to change it somehow (say, bold it, or something) to make it stand out more from the snow itself. Very hard to read in the current state.

The rest of the stuff was awesome.

New font, new menu borders and a custom item with custom graphics.

Neat, glitches aside. You should try making more custom weapons like that, but not so powerful, that use esper/blitz/sword tech effects as attacks.

I'll see if I can do something of that sort.  Only idea I can think of use random extra letters to represent it, but I don't think there's enough room.  I think the Finnish version pulled that off though..so I'll have to check that out again.

Edit: Nope.  There's just have a random unused font in there for whatever reason. :/

Justin, thank You for the video, this was really exciting!
When Lucca and that villager started to move that boulder... at first I thought they would just push it back and forth.
As for suggestions on the dungeon. How about making it more black-and-whiteish? The whole “when-I'm-sick-I-don't-care-for-colours-topos”.

And about that personal project thread. I'd love to see that, as long as it is not spread around to other forums extensively. The CE-trauma is still working somewhere inside of me...
Title: Re: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: justin3009 on December 05, 2009, 01:07:02 am
I was originally going to have the boulder be a sprite of it's own and they'd move that, but for whatever reason on that ONE map, the boulder sprite just wouldn't load.  So I had to bump it into a custom tile for that tile set.  I'm very lucky too, there was exactly 16 tiles left, perfect amount of what was needed.

I'm holding off slightly on the project for now for college reasons, plus there's a chance with the new thing coming up, I'll have to redo the entire project from start again for organization reasons, plus for certain reasons that will be seen if it can get finished ;]

Same story and some of the same characters.  Things were being changed as it was "progressing".  The only thing now, I completely lost where I put my storyline changes and stuff so I'll be redoing most of this, but I have a pretty clear idea of what I'm going to do for a preview.  Just need to find or create a new damn tileset that would work for the futuristic look.

When I designed all of these weapons, I based them off of already created weapons. At the same time, "Hand of God" seems a bit more elitist and special than plain ole "Gods Hand". It is initally "Godhand", so I may change it to that.

Not bad. You really need to get someone to go through your script for errors, though. And try and make your new enemy sprites (such as Raditz) match the old enemy sprites more.

Oh, and the last song? That's "Wandering Ghosts" from Symphony of the Night. Not whatever title you gave it. ^_~

The PC version hack is where I got the idea and I do also want to implement the Sub tank, sub weapons, etc..but I'm pretty sure that's way out of my league.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsCrxcJAF7o - Another Megaman X3 video.  NOP'd out a function so you can always play as Zero even when he does die.  With that, I think I found a whole slew of text related things and have them somewhat labeled.  I'll probably get to that later, but for right now it's in my log.

Edit 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1su-71VXDSc - Once again another.  I had to re-do just a little bit of code for Zero's portrait so it wouldn't ever call the static screen when you switch to him.  With that, you can now play as him ALWAYS even if he dies, but you can't switch to him during scenes you shouldn't be able to, AKA Boss fights or the introduction level.

I have some suggestions.
One you should make it so the mounds slow you a little bit, that way its like you are climbing a hill.
Second you need to edit links clothes a bit. Just as his clothes changes from OOT to Twilight you need to change it here. Something like a leatherish look or something. Keep the hat but add some postapoc punk stuff to it. Check out the clothes from shadow run and fallout and see what you can do to make the clothes fit.

There's an error in the way the VWF works with scrolling: the way characters appear doesn't follow the text, but instead it still follows the tile grid. To make things clearer to understand:

It's not a major bug, of course, but it's kinda annoying to see especially when you consider how much effort you put into this.

Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread

it almost looks better that way, though. that way the width scrolled per second is constant. letters per second being constant is nice but it can look a bit odd sometimes due to very thin letters (e.g. i, l) and very thick letters (e.g. m, w) appearing in the same amount of time :P

maybe if you really want to fancy it up, add a line of dark grey at the right edge of the scrolling text so the letter doesn't look as "cut off" with the white interior touching the black background?
Title: Re: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Gemini on August 11, 2010, 04:10:06 am
Well, the point of constant scroll is to have one character appearing every X frames. Most of the times you're working on a tile-based machine one character corresponds to one tile. Even with VWF implemented, it should still reflect the "X frames=1 character" as it defies the whole purpose of breaking tile boundaries.
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Nightcrawler on August 11, 2010, 07:58:57 am
I believe the 'whole purpose' most people break tile boundaries for is to have a thinner font and fit more text on a line. :P Displayed characters per frame is a secondary concern at best.
Title: Re: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Gemini on August 11, 2010, 08:28:13 am
Still, think of how that works on modern machines. You never see characters broken into "tiles". :p Plus, most professional SNES VWFs work with no grid.

Well, the point of constant scroll is to have one character appearing every X frames.

? says who? i would think it actually more natural to have Y pixels appearing every X frames, or Y/X pixels appearing every frame, or whatever. as i said, why should an "i" take the same amount of time to appear as an "M"?

the main issue here is more of the right edge of the scrolling text being "ugly", rather than whether it's one character per X frames or not.

? says who?
Pretty much every professional release since 1936? Ok, maybe not since that long, but you'll find many commercial releases to follow this kind of "standard". ;D It's not very hard to do, so why not making it look as professional as possible and bring it to the next level? I mean, all you've got to do is an extra tile shifting+DMA transfer to VRAM each time an overflow happens.
Title: Re: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Tauwasser on August 12, 2010, 11:26:43 am
I actually found that very repelling, too.  However, I thought it was just a hacky video.

It's really not that hard altogether to pull off. Basically follow Gemini's advice:

I mean, all you've got to do is an extra tile shifting+DMA transfer to VRAM each time an overflow happens.

I actually have always done it this exact way. The only problem for now is that sometimes text gets rendered to a background that is not the same pattern as the text background, so you see additional "blank" space where the routine will print the next char.

why should an "i" take the same amount of time to appear as an "M"?

Because they're both equally letters. It's the way you read and are least distracted. By getting not-fully-rendered parts every rendered letter, you automatically feel that something is somehow wrong.

well, i guess these guys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feP9LG_VgHc#t=1m01s) screwed up this time-honored tradition of yours, then. who are these "skewair" people? how dare they profane the Gemini Typesetting Act of 1936!

my point being that, yes, game VWFs are usually done the way you're saying. however, that's not because it is intuitively better for 1 character to appear every X frames, regardless of width. keep in mind that many times the text scroll was intended to be used with fixed-width or near-fixed-width fonts (e.g. any game that was made in japan, older games for PC/NES/GB/whatever that didn't have VWFs, etc.). therefore it would just so happen that 1 character every X frames would be equivalent to Y pixels every X frames.

That's just a picture, nothing involving scrolling at all. ::) In fact, actual sprite-based text in the very same game follows "my standard". :o

Just something I've been working on. Cross Sequence Battle system in CT :) This is 100% done with Temporal Flux and custom graphic sprites (no ASM hacking on the original battle system). It's obviously not complete as you can see but it IS feasible, although it takes a lot of space. Just to show the HP digits I need 1,000 frames of sprite assembly for instance, but the coding to show them will be very short thanks to self-modifying code functions.

One of the benefits of already having an english version available is with this. Without it that would have been a real pain in the ass to hack and thankfully the translation is spot on. Release is imminent following some polishing and a bug fix for another part of the game.

Hmmmm, putting this here in case anyone has an interest in Korean-to-English translations in the future, and so I don't completely forget about it:

Arcturus
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2h9cw_arcturus-trailer_ads

There's supposedly a Japanese-language version somewhere out there, courtesy of Falcom perhaps. Original developer was Sonnori (which went by the name IronNos for Crimson Gem Saga). It was released for the PC sometime around 2000, I think. Anyone familiar with this game, and existing translation attempts?

Wouldn't hold my breath, the guy complained in the comments it's "too much work for one weekend". So uh, if he thinks along those lines I'm damn sure the likelyhood of it finishing is close to 0%. And the script in that preview made me lol several times "Du Tucke!!!" ::)

mirror moon finished some other projects they had idle for half a decade, so I wouldn't completely rule out that they'll finish Arcturus some day.

1. Some graphics need to be designed and hacked in, most of which can be seen in the video.
2. I believe the translator would like to give the game a spin to check and edit his work.
3. Make sure I didn't break the password system.

That's it.

Another preview video uploaded.

And yes, I'm definitely looking for tracks for the CD hack version. I also love to have tracks for the native chip in the PCE too, but that's asking a bit much (I can't even get popular to write native chip music for other small things like demos and such). I'll mostly likely write the handler for that too (I already have a few music engines for the PCE that I wrote from scratch that I can use), but I doubt I'll get anyone to write music for it.

This is a (very) work-in-progress music tracker which runs on the PlayStation and uses Nintendo's SSEQ+SBNK+SWAR formats as input data. The music playing there is "Battle 1" from Final Fantasy IV, but pretty much all the soundtrack (including FFIII) is supported. I still need to fix several major bugs, like adjusting frequency, avoiding tempo desync and several other broken features (like panning or expressions). I will be using this to replace the horrid SPU streaming routine used to play music in FFIV PSX.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTkP-pgJpEw
Now instruments play at the correct frequency.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge Challenge Mode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSLtYtApwtI)(Featuring crazy music to make the hack seem intense and amazing!)

Hey everyone, this is a quick little hack I made a couple months ago when I was messing around with xdaniel's Wily's Toolbox utility. I'm not submitting it yet because it's not a complete revamp (most areas are still easily recognizable). I have completed it several times, but it may be too challenging for the general audience. This was more of a learning hack for me to start getting used to Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge. In the future I hope to create an actual hack that completely changes the game into something else (For example, creating some new enemies/objects by changing flags, etc.).

Here's a link to the UPS. (http://www.bwass.org/bucket/Challenge_Mode.ups)

Feel free to shoot a message my way if you have any problems or issues with it. Also, many thanks to xdaniel for creating such an awesome tool!

I have two suggestions.
1. The clouds look good, but need some more detail or props on them. More tiles pl0x.
2. The blue sky in the background is really plain and needs more action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGJefuPiyzQ - Dialogue placement is temporary, so is the dialogue itself now.  Buuuut gives you an idea of what it's like :)

It still needs a few things though.

1. A byte to dictate whether it should scroll or not and how fast it should. (This is seriously only needed for the Introduction and Credit Scroll)
2. A byte to dictate whether it should use a box layout or not. (Introduction, Credit Scroll and Ending)
3. A byte to dictate which side the portrait layout should be drawn on, left or right.

Also need to get a VWF working in there somehow if possible.  I know that the game has the ability to print certain amount of letters to the screen at time, pretty interesting actually.  Can make it draw one tile or draw 20 tiles at once.

This took about 2 years longer than it should have, but most of that was due to hardcoded pointers that have now been dealt with. Still need to update some text, which is just a matter of going through everything. A release is also imminent which is quite frankly a relief.

That looks amazing, quite professional.

The only suggestion I would have is to add the appropriate capital letters to the title, unless there's some sort of technical reasoning behind not having them in the first place.

I'm learning 65c816 ASM and this was my first attempt at making a custom sprite (generator). I'm pretty proud of this considering I'm not really an expert at all. Might submit it over SMWCentral, but I'll continue polishing it for now.

This might even mean I'll heavily start ASMing and try some wicked stuff, who knows? XD

I like the teleport down effect on a swap. It makes sense that the character is coming in from somewhere.

Is it possible to teleport into a pit when swapping?
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: KingMike on November 08, 2012, 01:39:07 pm
Wow, that must've taken quite an effort because MMX2 had no character swapping at all.
Title: Re: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: justin3009 on November 08, 2012, 04:39:09 pm
It most certainly is possible, or into a pit of spikes too.

And yes, it very much did. The whole menu had so much code to be redone. Thankfully X2 and X3 share the same compression code. I was able to make the work easier with the exit icon which freed up around 100 bytes.

But the main part that was a pain was redoing the weapon select/sub-tank/exit icon system.  Apparently X2 used HDMA to do that while X3 used a palette swap.  HDMA in X3 was used for the swap screen.  It was a pain in the butt.

There's still a few kinks to work out and stuff to add, but it's definitely working better than I expected.

Back to hacking after a long time: enter the Biohazard 2 Source Next edition in English.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7w80HiOJO4
Just like US builds of RE2 had both English and Japanese text (and most gfx files+code), this build kept a good 90% of that. Unfortunately the dual language feature, which was originally unlockable through Action Replay codes, is missing entirely here even if the code is capable of understanding and printing English (with a proportional font, too). The hack takes care of changing the instructions that kept that locked away, while adding whatever was missing, like the save screen you can see here:

For the occasion I was thinking of using beat for the patching process, but apparently the patch resulted in a 1.52 GB file by using the folder method+delta patching. No idea what's the problem, but I guess I'll stick to my own patcher in the meanwhile.

The codecs and such I use with SNES9X are pretty great quality but the file size sky rockets (Even if quality is set to low).  ZSNES basically compresses them both so it's not 100% quality but it's damn near good quality enough to see the changes.

An update from my homebrew game in Game Maker. I may be starting a blog for my game, and creating a thread for it in the Gaming forum when the time is right, that way I don't have to post videos in this thread anymore. But it is definitely worth looking at if you like Zelda and/or Resident Evil. This is probably my most ambitious project yet.

Inventory, Precise Collision & Sword Animation

Blood, Points & Level System

Land Mines & Enemy Land Mines
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQyUAfVjdAU

Overworld Areas from 10% Build
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tRHhKjiyXI

Fairy Ponds not only restore your health to full, they also act as Save Points. If you have a Green Gem, you can save your game, much like the Ink Ribbons in Resident Evil. If you don't have a Green Gem, you're screwed. :P

The sword animation, while the idea is the same as Infidelity's, I drew all of the sprites myself, and Link no longer has the shield attached to him.  The shield is a separate item that you will pick up along the way.

The Points act as a different type of currency.  Similar to Dino Crisis 2, the more points you get, the more you can upgrade your weapons.  For example, you can upgrade your first sword to Level 2, which makes it a bit more stronger.  When you get the second and third swords, you can upgrade those as well.

The Level System will effect the gameplay as well.  The higher your level, the more likely you are to receive an extra heart container, and increase your attack and defense power by a point or two.

Other weapons coming soon! :)
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: justin3009 on March 11, 2013, 11:48:33 pm
Did you get the Sword animation idea from infidelity's project on acmlm's board?

Though I must ask.  Is the step counter just for debugging purposes or is that staying on screen at all times?  That number changing non-stop can get pretty ridiculous at points.  Maybe have it as just a feature inside the menu itself?
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: RetroRain on March 12, 2013, 12:15:05 pm
I wouldn't say I got the idea from him.  While it is the same idea, it is just something that I wanted to do, regardless.  I drew all of the sword-animation sprites myself.  If you notice Link doesn't have his shield attached to him.  The shield will now be a separate item.  I'm showing this off at the build it is at, because I may be upgrading the graphics, so I wanted to at least have some beta footage of what I did before the game really took off.  As for the steps, it may move into the inventory at a later time.  There is still plenty to code. :)

I updated the above post with more information.

Essentially it's the Imperials, a neo-nazi nation. Then there's the Federation which are the good guys. They don't really give you a whole lot of background, but I'm assuming it's basically the same setup from WW2 with the Allies and Axis.

My hack to allow an 8th unique colored character in battle for Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. The difficulty lies in the fact that there are only 8 sprite palettes and they are all used by character avatars which leaves nothing for all the other sprite graphics. It will be finished soon.

On the subject of Bionic Commando, a little bit of trivia about the remake (Bionic Commando: Rearmed);
While the game has plenty of original dialog and a slightly reworked storyline (new timeline for when the game's events takes place, some adjustments/additions for its sequels, mish mash of various regional and franchise specific terminology, and a good few jokes thrown in here and there); at the core of it all, is actually featured a completely fresh retranslation of the original Famicom version's script - before being adjusted/updated for its new setting - (iirc, the translations were done by one of the game's producers and also former member of Capcom's localization team, Gearoid Reidy).
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Pennywise on April 07, 2013, 10:11:51 pm
I think one of the things that made the original more endearing was the fact you are fighting Nazis and Hitler's head exploding. Without that I think you have an ok game that seriously needs a jump button. I also think it's silly to not explicitly state you are fighting evil Nazi scumbags and instead have to rely on older conventions and a wink-wink, but I haven't played this remake so I can't say for sure.
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: Carnivol on April 09, 2013, 07:40:05 am
Hitler was still undeniably "The Leader/Master D" in Bionic Commando. (Graphics still being very much Hitler in all 8-bit console versions, rather than redrawn/altered, and in the remake they go out of their way to imply it in-game that it's Hitler. Only a few regional censored SKUs, such as the German version of Rearmed, avoids it -- down to removing the close up scene of his head exploding -- for shame ... an PEGI 12+ rating), but regardless of which version you're playing; you're never really fighting any good ol' Nazis in Bionic Commando (besides Hitler himself) as the main opposing force is Weissman/Killt's Imperialists/Imperial Army (Which in all but name is a sort of Neo-Nazi faction, I suppose.)

As for jump button in 2D space? Who needs them! You've got a bionic arm! Gotta give FatShark the thumbs up for how Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 has all its levels and secrets obtainable without needing to jump at all -- although the approach gets significantly different in many cases when you do take it that way (game even has a disable Jump difficulty setting and even a separate tracker that shows whether or not you've finished stages without using the jump feature)

Either way, will be cool to see a fresh translation of the Famicom version

Terri Hawkes from the english Sailor Moon dub.  Imported her 'Crisis Power!' voice into the game!  :)

In doing so, labeled how the game deciphers which data to use for the voice, where it's loaded from, what speed the voice is and how long the voice is.  Essentially, this game is now hackable on voices with ease.

Neat! Will the voice importer be released as a tool at some point? It's understandable that you don't want to edit all 430 voices, but maybe a romhacking group might pick it up as a project...
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: justin3009 on August 25, 2013, 01:10:56 pm
It's just a combination of using SNESBRR and using a couple scripts that Zarradeth has written in 010 Editor for versions 3.1+ that modifies the BRR header lengths by 2 bytes so the game can properly play them.

I do plan to release it sometime as he has mentioned that he wouldn't mind at all.  Plus, it'd give a little insight on people who want to do a voice translation patch.

Final Kefka. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O4j-zWhhw4)

This is a gameplay video I made to demonstrate the new final boss I included in my hack, Stand Guard.

I saw so many people toiling about endlessly trying to change the game to make it harder, by modifying ALL the stats of EVERY monster.

I thought "that's too much goddamn work, and it's pissing all over the work the original programmer did" (I was very impetuous).

So I just made Kefka a merciless bastard, like he's supposed to be.

Enjoy!

Altered SRW2's music behavior so that battle themes persist after battle sequences end, the way pretty much every SRW after Alpha does it. It makes for a much more exciting game. Have a peek:

That's really cool. Makes me wonder why they programmed in long versions of the theme songs if they kept cutting them off like that. Though now your hack makes it pointless to have any music but the themes. But that's better, I feel.

And how could you not have shown off the best theme: Mazinger Z? :P

Well, in SRW2 it waits for a button press before it proceeds with battle text, so you could theoretically just sit there listening to the tune forever. It makes less sense in SRW3 and on where the battles happen completely automatically. And if you want to listen to the map song you can always just sit there when your turn starts :)

Why, out of curiosity, did you decide to change this back into a Zelda game? I thought making it a Conker hack was creative and would've been a breath of fresh air (and would have led to some funny dialogue).

But it's your game.
Title: Re: YouTube/Google Video thread
Post by: puzzledude on October 21, 2013, 05:02:30 pm
Main reason was, that the game was never actually modified to Conker. It has been in development for 4 years as a Zelda3 game before the idea of Conker came along and the main (Conker) sprite was never drawn. Also, changing the sword into a frying pan was impossible to do. The main Title screen and some dialogs were also done already. Changing all this to Conker style was questionable from the beginning. And there was also the numerous shocks of most players following the project (being fans of Link).

The way the game has recently developed, I can say for sure, that Conker is not happening (SePH's wishes), plus the 4 years pre-Conker development could not be undone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1B4kqnIBEA&feature=youtu.be - All of his voices are now replaced with the PSP versions!

Was getting bored and decided to see if all my data labeling was correct.  Thankfully I checked, there were a couple of them that were off by a few bytes but would have significantly screwed up the game.

All the voices are EXACT length except for one, which was about 36 bytes shorter than the original.  No issues with the game at all, no overflow of voice, etc..  Works perfectly!

I was thinking of maybe trying to see for fun to give Dorn a few skills/skill animations.  I've got about 6 skill voices already made for him from his PSP VA but adding in the sprites and such would be harder.  Though removing the excess JP font would actually give more than enough room for his new skills :P

So here is where you were, Justin. (Note, I didn't come here for Project Zero, I'm here because of some other things, like a Wild Arms 4 bugfix.)

I was seeing the Parallel Worlds video here and got quite impressed. It really feels like Zelda 3 was changed into another game, rather than being just a mod of the original game like many others. Now I'm really looking forward for this game.

All his voices were apparently at 6500khz. It's weird, it's the same sentence as the original though I probably screwed the speed in editing. It's like, not really a word I think, he just goes 'Ma' or something. More like an expression I think.

I'd guess only partial rewrite as the TG16 uses a similar CPU and it has built-in feature that could probably partially emulate the NES memory map, so then he'd need to emulate the PPU, APU and MMC1 functions.

So far I'm up to world 6 and it's working great.  There's only one very minor issue where if you save and load just after beating a world once you beat the first stage of the next world you see the end cinematic of the current world for some reason (but you still have to play through it).  It's not a big deal so I'll leave it in for kicks, it doesn't let you skip any levels.

I wonder if there are any other conventional 'man' characters that would be cool to see in a hack like Megaman? Jump Man is one.

Wow. That does look like a rather impressive game, even if it does seem a bit Dragon Quest-ish it seems to have colorful graphics, an interesting battle system and an interesting premise behind it. Looks like grinding is definitely required though. Looking forward to its eventual release!

Though Kadokawa Shoten... was Legend of the Double Moon an Anime or Manga?

According to wikipedia...

Quote
It is based on an earlier play-by-mail RPG also titled Double Moon Densetsu, serialized in Marukatsu Famicom and eventually Marukatsu Super Famicom; in addition to this computer game, there was also a tabletop RPG system produced based on the work.

Although some of the smarter breeds (Border Collies) might luck-out and stumble upon salvation if they associate hot days with a refreshing dip in the ol' swimming hole.

This would be amazing if someone could create it but I'm guessing it would require a custom / dedicated emulator to handle that many sprites and so much work it would be easier to start from scratch in a modern IDE.

Essentially, I'll be modifying certain games to act like arcade games using a custom controller board that allows up to 16 button inputs. I'm using these 4 extra inputs on each controller to accept coin-up as well as be used as jumpers for game options. I've been working on the various parts of this on and off for about 2 years now.

Here's my project page for the Super Famicade (you'll see from the logs that I've changed the design completely since I first had the idea):

So I posted a thread about this elsewhere without realizing this thread existed. Oops. Anyway, I have recently started a semi instructional video series called "The Joy of ROM Hacking". It's basically Bob Ross but with an offensive ROM Hack rather than a painting. This first video "teaches" simple graphics hacking. Later on there will be more in depth vids that teach how to locate in game text in a hex editor, how to use SMB Title Editor, and how to use Super Mario Utility to its fullest.

I started a series of video tutorials aimed to help beginners in hacking FF6. So far I've done one video covering the basic of YY-CHR, one covering compressed graphics (with PeerSpriteViewer) and two covering event code. I plan to continue the event tutorial and ending up eventually covering most of the ~240 event commands. I'm trying to do small edits that have a visual impact to not discourage beginners and show them we can have a nice result with an (hopefully) organized way of working.

I'll also do an xkas 101 tutorial because I see too much people still editing lengthy ASM code with a hex editor, which is counter productive if you don't know the general use opcodes by heart. I know some people prefer coding in raw hex but I think an assembler simplifies the life by removing a layer of headscratching  :D

I'm French-Canadian so I have a heavy Quebec accent and I struggle a bit to keep a good flow because of live French-English translation in my head, but overall the result is decent I think. I always end up with one or two interrogation point(s) per tutorial, e.g. something more advanced I try to explain but that I'm not 100% sure about but I consider these minor and not a huge drawback considering the rest of the tutorial.

Second event tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV0pCGJDDI8
YY-CHR Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzmQsROaELk

note: OBS monitor caption was not centered in both videos :/

I'm mostly experimenting stuff with streaming, now that I have a decent connection. I tried a couple dev streams with my engine in the past days; I have no idea if a hack stream could be interesting or useful, most of the discussion goes between me and Tom. I mean, most of the time I'm idling and chatting while looking at disassemblies and thinking. I guess the more interesting part is when I lay out some actual code, but again there's a gap going from disassembly -> my brain -> output on code. :P

I'll do another one, again with Mizzurna Falls, just to see if it's interesting or useful to anybody. I've seen Slowbeef do some of those, tho the approach is different (and I have a shitty mic, not gonna bother using that).

It is interesting at some level to see the shape of things you are going through. That this is about PS1 is good as that gets lesser coverage. Like I just noticed that libref pdf.

The format is horribly inefficient though and uh... several hours of this is quite a lot. Like, I'm better off just picking a random position of the stream and looking around for a moment than anything else really.

EDIT: Two new streams uploaded, a third one should be processed soon. This is the final result of a couple days hacking:

I made a small bit of asm to let the 2nd controller control the enemies in Secret Of Mana, heres a short video of me (as a mushboom) fighting AI-controlled Purim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQoAuGmV92I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQoAuGmV92I) The player 1 (randi) is standing somwhere on the left, but I have made him invisible for the event in case you were wondering.

How many changes was it at the asm level? Hijacking P1 for shroom and most other things in-place worked?

How far can you go off-screen? :P

The way the enemies move is actually pretty straightforward:
-They have a byte that specifies the direction they are facing,
-And another one which is their current animation ID,
The animations handle the movements, so if a monster is facing left and its current animation is 01 (Walk), the monster will play its walking animation and move towards the left.

-all enemies use the first 3 animation IDs for the same behaviours:
Idle, walk, Run  (if I recall correctly)

-There is a byte that specifies if the character is attacking or not
If the character is not attacking, it plays(or continue playing) the "current animation" every frame
Otherwise it performs an attack, each monster have different attacks and they dont use the same IDs as the "normal" animations

I expanded the rom and made a routine that gets called every frames:
It only controls the enemy in the 1st enemy "slot",
It reads P2's D-Pad, sets the monster's facing direction accordingly and set 01 (Walk) as the current animation
if the D-Pad is released, it sets the current animation to 00 (Idle)

P2's A,B,X,Y button are then read
if any button is pressed then The "attacking" flag is set to true and the AttackID is set depending on which button is pressed (A = 00, B = 01, X = 02, Y = 03)

The routine also sets a byte in the "controlled" monster's character data that specifies if the character  is control by the CPU or by a human to prevent it to read it's AI scriptps.

Its all that was needed to control any monster, altho I only tested with a few different monsters, I think it should work fine with all monsters.
Well..anyhing but bosses.. which instantly crash the game horribly when the fight starts lol

and about how far I can go off-screen.. No idea I would need to test it

It's been a very long time since I've logged in here. Well the source of my old Sonic 2 SMS hack is long gone, so I've had to start from scratch again. I've implemented a few things that are different, I haven't made too many art edits since again my art skills suck. But what I have done is documented how to edit the title cards, so the level names are all changed, I've also switched the level order back to the original order. (Green Hills Zone is first, Underground is after Aqua Lake Zone.) The HUD has been changed to Sonic Chaos' HUD, palettes have also been changed. I've also added a few level layout edits only to the first level though. This video here is months old, but I haven't recently worked on this project. (But since coming back here, I want to work on the hack again. :V) Also disregard the glitched title screen, I used level select codes and when you input those cheats, the game attempts to load the title screen but since the palette and level gets loaded before the title screen and during the intro, it's using aspects from whatever level you have loaded. The title screen itself is treated as a level, just like the intro and credits sequence is. (I probably should have just used the level select inside the game to showcase the levels but meh...)

I made special FF6LE builds for RotDS and Children of Vector hacks. It allows 96 new tilemaps (from 350 to 446) and push maps (locations) numbers to 512. It also expand and relocate NPC, event triggers, exits. Treasures can be on the 511 maps but because of SRAM limitations I decided to not expand their number. This may change. You can now also rename new and old maps in the editor. I'm working on a Zone Doctor build that will allow all this from the setting menu: http://imgur.com/a/FxBMH

This is exactly what this upgrade will allow. While FF6LE / Zone Doctor being great, with all tilemaps being used, no extra space for tilemap data and NPCs, event triggers near capped, it was hard to make new content without removing any.

My goal is to make it speedrun friendly without taking the fun out of the game. The Level design will be based on the Abilities with many hidden Shortcuts, a lot of skillful jumping sort of Mirrors Edge.

Any feedback or suggestions is welcome.

A very early concept of a Mega Man 3 hack with Character specified Abilities and Attributes. The idea behind it is to make every Weapon/Character feel and play differently.
This is just a demo of the base code, effects and attributes can be added/adjusted for each Weapon/Character separated into 3 Layers depending on the Level of Charger and current Weapon Energy.

Some ideas:
- Topman weapon can make you fall slowly spinning (like magnet in your video)
- Spark attack could have the big attack that sparkman uses with charge
- Maybe change the magnet attack to it returns after attack (like shadowman weapon, for example)

Thanks!

Surprisingly, it wasn't that difficult. I just copied the Bank with the OAM attributes and the one with Mario's sprites to blank Banks and then added a conditional on the routines that switches to them. Then all that was left was editing the OAM attributes a bit to fit the new graphics.

That's great to hear that you'll be porting over the GB versions of Music B & C as well.

I hope the same thing can be done with Tetris DX for the GBC as well.

I watched that video last week, you did a excellent job on making these arcade ports look more like their arcade counterparts with your color hacking skills. Especially Mega Twins, that game looks just like its arcade counterpart thanks to your hack.

You along with fusaru & Linkuei showed everyone that the Genesis is capable of having Amiga, arcade & SNES looking games if you use the right colors which a lot of developers didn't do back in the 90's.

My tentative FF4 Prettified hack in motion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6lEC8zBP-Q

For those who have no idea what I did in this hack, here's an explanation: the proportional font is all predrawn, which means the VWF effect is generated in advance and then stored in the rom. Some things, like item names, are dynamically copied in real time via DMA, while others are static sets of 256 tiles (menu static messages, in other words) switched around depending on the menu section.

The thing about this hack is that I wanted to check how fast this could run on the SNES. Turns out byuu was correct in one of his articles: it's fast and looks good. I also tried a few slick tricks like "expanding" RAM by using the SRAM as a scratchpad (I'm currently using 32KB because I needed a huge temp buffer for preserving some VRAM data). I was even surprised by the DMA working correctly from/to SRAM!

Hopefully more people will try this approach. It's fun to implement and it works great even with FF4, which has some really naaasty code.

My tentative FF4 Prettified hack in motion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6lEC8zBP-Q
Couldn’t notice any lag whatsoever, very promising! Does it work as well during battles?
I understand this is an experiment at this point and far from finished, but I couldn’t help but noticing a typo on the Status Screen: Strenght. Keep up the good work!

FF4 Prettify updated a bit with less glitches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R2vrqmKU1Y
While it doesn't show in the video, player names can already be made proportional, since the code generating those tiles is already coded in the assembly procedures. It's just a matter of actually showing those tiles and fix one spot I forgot to cover for tile regeneration.

Does it work as well during battles?
Not yet, but I'm trying to learn how the battle bank works in order to add Prettify in there too. For now I can say for sure that there's enough VRAM.

Those messages are far from finalized. I'll have someone double check them for me, since all I did there was quickly translate all messages and put them together in an XML script.

shiroi ringu he - twinkle little star
joshi pro wrestling game for SNES.

I finished translating all the dialogue. I need to do research on move names. I inserted the script as is, but it would be great if I could figure out how to modify the text engine. 16 characters per line is very limiting and the 14x12 font looks awful.

My translation patch for Soul Blader, which re translate all the game dialogues that were brutally butchered by Robert L. Jerauld. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUg2Ct9KJdE&t=2s Patch available for download, needs to be applied to US image only. Plus current re translation of Illusion of Gaia which was also brutally butchered by the same dude, whom clearly stated in an interview that He basically made stuff up during localization of the entire game, link here of the interview http://gaming.moe/?p=331
If you wanna stay updated regarding the current re translation of IoG follow my progress on my YT channel, and if you feel like it give some love. BTW IoG is been re-translated in the same way SB has been, following the original Japanese script, that has been almost all translated by an awesome Japanese dude whom offered me his helping hand. Mad props and shoutout to Shiva Indis, without him
the Soul Blader and the upcoming IoG re translation would have not been possible, much love my man!
Also planning to re-translate Robotrek/Slapstick - Terranigma - Brain Lord - 7Th Saga, basically all the titles Mr.Jerauld sadly messed with during localization.

Luckily for 7th Saga, there's one person who's been looking into hacking that game lately. Not sure if they were yet making an editor.
I remember looking at just porting the English script to the Japanese ROM for difficulty restoration purposes, and the text pointers are embedded within the NPC data so that's probably not easy to change.
