Title: Completely New
Post by: Mogman77 on August 07, 2022, 08:03:20 AM
Hello! I am completely new to modding games or hacking or whatever you would call it. I had an idea I wanted to do to work on one of my favorite games in my free time and I would like to know where I could start. Its Breath of Fire 2 for the Snes. Could anyone help me with that or point me towards a better place to ask if this isnt the right area for this?

Some users here might give you advices if you ask particular questions about hacking. Maybe some can join your project if you elaborate your ideas a bit.

In case you're not planning on doing most of the work by yourself, this topic will be better

There used to be a macro for this text block:

(Also, in the future please try to find a more descriptive subject line than "Completely New".  Even "Breath of Fire 2 idea" would have been better.)

Why not just say what your idea is? It could be something completely trivial, or it could be nearly impossible.

Good point. It would take a lot of work but my idea was basically to make the game more balanced. The game is way to easy as it is, no one has an elemental theme with the magic they learn, and most equipment is obsolete way before you have access to it. I'd like to add more magic for certain elements, and change certain shops around. I realize for the adding magic I would have to make room somehow but I really dont see that being an issue with all the dummy spells there are. Changing shops would be pretty easy but I'd like to block off the town Guntz until later in the game, instead of it being available as soon as you get the whale. Right now this is about the only ideas I have, and I don't really thing too many people would be interested in this project, but like I said its just something I want to work on in my spare time.

The first thing to do is always to look at what people have done before.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything that makes the changes you suggest, but at least there is reason to believe that making them wouldn't be an insurmountable obstacle.

Not sure what you mean by "all the dummy spells" since https://tcrf.net/Breath_of_Fire_II#Unused_Skills seems to suggest there are exactly three.

Maybe I was thinking of items. Either way I don't want to add in too many spells and I'm not even completely sure it would be possible to add in new graphics for them. I can draw halfway decently so designing new spells wouldnt be too hard, but actually putting them into the game is something I'm not sure is possible.
