Title: What can I do with an .lvl or .tpl file?
Post by: Ukysseus on June 27, 2022, 10:08:45 AM
Hi, I'm a complete beginner but I want to try to mod a GameCube game, Rayman Arena (yeah I know maybe a little bit too ambitious). My goal would be to bring back a secret part of a map that was cut from the GC version. I extracted the game with GCR but now I have plenty of .lvl and .tpl files and no idea what to do with them, I can't even figure out how to open them... Does anyone knows about a tool or a guide that could help me?  :)

The first thing to try is to Google around and see if anyone has done anything with this game or any of its various ports in the past.  You should also search to see if any other Ubisoft games have used .lvl or .tpl files, since it is quite likely that the same development tools were used internally for multiple projects.
(I note in particular that there is a project to reverse-engineer Rayman 2 (https://github.com/imaginaryPineapple/OpenRayman), but there is nothing that immediately suggests the tools should be usable with other games.)

But it is entirely possible you won't find anything. It is quite likely that ".lvl" and ".tpl" files are custom formats developed exclusively for the use of Rayman Arena, which means you'll have to manually reverse-engineer the format from scratch starting with a hex editor. There is no "tool" or "guide" for anything like this. You will probably want to start with the Windows version rather than tinkering with the Gamecube version; it is reasonable to expect that they should use similar data files.

Maybe you can find some help at TCRF, https://tcrf.net/Rayman_Arena , If I'm not wrong they have a Discord Server.
