Title: Super Mario Bros (NES) Semi-HD Edition
Post by: Valug on October 09, 2021, 02:07:55 pm
The hack is done and can be downloaded here: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6258/

I've seen some graphic improvement hacks for SMB, but I mostly feel like they take away from the game's own style, usually importing graphics from SMB 2 or SMB 3. So I decided to make my own graphics hack, replacing them with SMB2J, that has mostly the same style, just a little bit more polished graphics. I initially thought of simply importing the tiles directly using TLP, but apparently it's not compatible with FDS files, so I'm redrawing all the graphics using the FCEUX PPU viewer as a basis. So far I've done the font, the bricks, the mushrooms and the moving platforms. However I'm having a hard time finding some of the sprites, like the floor blocks for 1-1 and the fire flower. This is only my second hack so maybe I'm just missing something. If anyone could at least point me at the right direction I would appreciate.
NOTE: Considering the amount of hacks available for this game, it's possible that someone has already done this exact same thing, I just wasn't able to find it.

Please post your images to another file hoster.
The Scratchpad is for submission use only. Nobody but Staff will see them.

If you're looking for sprites, start Code/Data Logger and enable a corresponding checkmark in PPU Viewer.

Same goes for background tiles. But if you still have troubles with them, go to Hex Editor -> View -> PPU Memory, and corrupt bytes (tiles ID's) starting from 2000 (make a savestate beforehand).

If you can't tell sprites from background, disable one of them in the emulator (Config -> Display -> last 2 options).

Thanks for the help and the hoster recommendation. Ironically, I have finished the hack before I could read this, but might still use it in the future.

Update: The hack has been released and can be downloaded here: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6258/
Would appreciate any feedback regarding anything that I missed. Also I might soon make an optional patch for my other hack, Super Waluigi, for compatibility with this one, namely regarding the "Z" sprite that was replaced with an upside down "L".

The title came off as a bit misleading to me.
When I first saw it I thought it would be a MESEN graphics pack before I remembered that those don't have a section to make submissions to.
I would consider a new title maybe.
