Title: Castlevania III Total Conversion (NES) Hack: Aperture of Corruption
Post by: Toffi on December 08, 2020, 11:20:05 pm
I'm working on a small Castlevania 3 rom hacking project called Aperture of Corruption. Our goal is for this project to stand out as a love letter to Castlevania, as well as a thank you note to Konami, for 35 years of gothic goodness. Using the MMC5 chip to its fullest potential we have room to almost double the games original content. The plan is to totally convert Castlevania 3 into a whole new game with brand new levels, story, music, bosses, and so much more.

However we need help from the community, we are looking for more people looking to make this project a reality.
If your interested in helping work on the project or have any questions about it, feel free to PM me or post about it below, I will try and answer as much as I can.

What we have done so far with the games original ROM:
-extended the original CHR and PRG banks
-built in instant character swapping on the fly
-added extra mid air control
-created instant weapon swapping (allowing for more than one sub-weapon to be used)
-and introduced slightly faster stair climbing

WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH
-Background art and stage design
-New sound engine
-Boss sprite work
-ASM programming

If your interested in helping out with any of these please feel free to post here or DM me on Discord at Toffi#6064

Basic Lore Summary:
Aperture of corruption is a prequel to CV3, following the mother of Trevor Belmont, Sonia. Lore wise, this project looks to answer; why the Belmont were feared by the start of CV3, solving the mystery behind the time traveler Saint Germain, the disappearance of the Belmont clan after 1792, Dracula's forgotten resurrection in 1897, how Quincey Morris defeated Dracula and the bizarre time stopping pocket watch found throughout the series.
[After Ricther defeated Dracula in 1792, the Belmont legacy/lineage slowly fell into obscurity and eventually became nothing but a legend. Without the Belmont Clan to stop him; Dracula returned in 1897, (following the 100 year curse) and Translevania was once again thrown into chaos. Dracula enlists the help of a brilliant scientist; Claudia, to strengthen his forces and help him erase the Belmont Clan from existence. Using Draculas forbidden knowledge, and dark magic, Claudia crafts a device (like a distance mirror) that allows objects to be pulled from the past called the Aperture of Corruption. Dracula used this device to pull Sonia Belmont; a descendant from the far past, into the future. Can you collect the fragments of the aperture entrusted to Draculas baddest bosses, free the cursed citizens of Translevania, all while saving the future AND the past?]

Plot points from legends that will be ironed out in Aperture of Corruption:
Why Alucard is not Trevor's father
Why Sonia isn't the first or last to fight Dracula
and why Sonia is still important to the lore as a whole.

Sounds ambitious! Good luck, it sounds like it will make for something great.
I especially want to see how the story turns out. It's intriguing.

Fantastic large project! Very nice title screen and sprites (the bats and skeletons seem very good design, also a while ago I started an idea but I was left only in a title screen and some changes :-\:

very good progress! It is a great initiative, I think the owl is very successful for the owl ... perhaps given the size of these it could also be replaced by a gargoyle ;)

Thanks sebastianangel, At the moment im hoping to just re-design the old enemies before re-designing them so there can be two layers of separation from the original content. The plan is to repaint the old designs before makeing something completely new using the CHR space. :P A gargoyle is a good idea though, I worked on the flying skeleton and added some more gargoyle-ish features.
(also re-designed the bone pillar)

Hi, cartridge_rom! thanks for the tip, as I am also working on the Complex project, so I will defiantly look into it. ;D

Boss concept.  Power Crystal Demon.  I'm extremely rusty on creating stuff from scratch.  Might be customized into something different.  Did not add the tail nor chains as it would have been way too big of an encounter.  Could have added the tail but this would do, a butchered down version  :P

Since Castlevania 3 can take decently sized sprites this will go into the roster nicely.  Kept Frankenstein in for size comparison

Hey,

Those graphics are extraordinary.

If you are looking for extra hands I have a fairly good background with NES Mechanics. I see you are thinking of Sound Modification? What are you seeking to do with that?
Title: Re: Castlevania 3 (NES) total conversion hack: Aperture of Corruption

Thanks! ;D

On sound modification:
We are searching for someone with 6502 ASM programming experience to help us dissect and enhance the games sound engine. Currently we have the music creation side of the project ironed out, but are still working on implementing a sound engine to help us port NSF (nintendo sound format) or ASM (direct assembly) into the games code. The plan is to edit existing songs and add new ones to CV3s vanilla soundtrack.

One of the issues the team has encountered is all Castlevania 3 games outside of japan used the MMC5 chip, which modified music and added depth to it. However the original ROM was developed in Japan, and the VRC6 sound chip modifier was implemented in the original for an extra effect and then modified for a global release. Due to this change, the code has taken a bit longer to unravel. Currently the teams programmer is looking into older fan-made Castlevania sound engines (ones built for CV1 and 2 which didnt use MMC5) to see if there is any way that code could be ported.

Sounds interesting.  ::)

I have definitely had my share of conversations with 6502. Lol.

The first thing to consider is what registers are talking to the actual hardware.
Most likely what they did during the VRC6 to MMC5 port is remove the bytes that were used for the extra parts. Then used them for something else now that they were freed up. It sounds like you are trying to put them back if I am correct?

What you will most likely need to do is find an empty spot somewhere else in the ROM and stick the unused data there then write a custom routine that points the extra data to the hardware. Basically re-installing the stuff that they took out during the regional port.

We are aiming to get the MMC5 done first (as our modifications so far have been using that version) and then possibly come in with the VRC6 as an extension to the original MMC5 port. Most of the issues come from dissecting whats already been done, as the original conversion process made the MMC5 data harder to work with.

Were getting defiantly getting somewhere though. :P

By the way, here's some more progress on enemy remodels (for the mummy and medusa heads)

Just wait until the world is introduced to the first soundtrack to AoC that is utilizing a Castlevania III MMC5 sound engine.  The demo that I listened to this morning was like my cup of coffee....but I don't drink coffee

Ohhh, You mean you have already changed the sound engine. For some reason I thought MMC5 was the original Castlevania III engine. Now after doing a bit of research I see it was 2A03. If you have already made it into a new engine then I don't think I will be very much help. I was under the impression you needed help converting 2A03 to a different one. My bad.

Well in that case, That is going to be something else again.

I don't think the castlevania series has ever had this type of sound engine before.

Update on the technical stuff.

The new sound engine is still being fleshed out and worked upon by our programmer!  When it's 100% fully functional I shall let you all know!  This sound engine will be utilized in my other projects outside of AoC so that way things are optimized to the fullest!

When the music is created I shall direct people towards the creator's YouTube channel while production and everything can be found on mine and everyone else involved channels so please be sure to keep an eye on everything as things are being documented while we go along in this adventure!\

Will update more when we have a demo stage made with or without the new music

Redesigned the end level reward, its been re-designed as an aperture fragment (CV3 originally used an orb)
Made new 8 bit Gothic text and redesigned the HUD well. We're still ironing everything out so expect new changes to come!

I know a lot of people will  have doubt about the things we're going to be bringing out and see about implementing but I will not say to what they are until they're that, 100% implemented, as things could be tossed out due to technical difficulties.  Me and Toffi have both been spearheading this project for we're both leads on it

I have a critique for the living flame enemy. I suggest not using a black outline if at all possible.
In fact any enemy that is, shall we say, energy based (?) should not use a black outline as doing so will make them pop better IMO.

Thanks for the tip Vanya ;D FYI most AoC enemies will be redesigned to fit the theme and more creatively use the tile space. The flame enemy will absolutely be re-designed when its corresponding level is created.

One of the reasons main reasons why the re-designs are going through multiple revisions has to do with stages. A stage with a blue background might make a blue enemy harder to see, so were developing enemies along with their stages to keep everything visible and stylistically consistent. :)
Also worked on the point numbers and shrank the AoC sub title to fit into the original's space in the CHR

So I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

Looks promising. I would really like to see this hack being designed around the improved controls with inertia hack being included by default.

I can confirm that many of the improvements the controls hack gave CV3 have been implemented
(and a few more quality of life feature's are planned on top of them) ;)

When Dragoon first had the project, he called his style SotN 8 bit.  He use to have an exact style like me as I taught him how to sprite.  Not sure when he picked it up but that's what he got.

Here's his Sonia sprite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqxuSA_7PNQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqxuSA_7PNQ)

Compared to mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Cip5WjRWrk

We recently picked up a wonderful sprite artist that has something extremely similar in style so every enemy and boss can be rendered to the 'SotN 8 Bit' thing

I could never do his style as it messes with my OCD  :D

Toffi and myself will keep you all updated on future updates

Here's another awesome design from emco! This is the water spirit Nøkken, its a Scandinavian shape shiftier that loves to fool people who wander into it's territory by transforming into something that looks harmless before dragging their victims into a watery grave. Rumors state that screaming their name will outright kill the little tricksters, so don't forget it!

Another wonderful design by emco. This little fellow is a red cap, they are a murderous sub species of dwarfs who can move extremely fast. Legends say that travelers who stray to far from home will encounter these tiny monsters, and that outrunning one is impossible. The fashionable red caps they wear are dyed with their victims blood.

Here's another enemy type from our resident bestiary creator emco! This enemy is based of the African Popo Bawa, a dark spirit that attacks homes during the night. It's name literally translates to "bat-wing", due to its primary form when invading houses. It is said the only way to defeat the Popo Bawa is with blinding light. After a Popo Bawa attack, lit fires will often be placed around a victims home in order to keep the monster for coming back again.

A living spike enemy has been created! Taking the place of the moving spore, is the Teculo. This urchin like monster comes from Romanian Demonolgy. These small spike balls come from the river styx, they are one of the few creatures that can survive in it. Touching one is the probably the worst course of action you can take though, as the human body is said to become inflated and sluggish when inflicted by its poison.
(like an allergic reaction on steroids)
Fascinatingly enough, the folk lore makes demons are immune to the Tculo's poison and instead use them as throwing weapons or summon them at their side in battle.

As things progress on me and Toffi's teams, we are slowly moving along!  As my activities have been moved to the weekends for right now I am happy to see that Toffi's progress in understanding CV3 with reVamp is showing along with his spriting techniques that are improving as well!  At this rate, he's going to be a very wonderful spriting partner when it comes to my other stuff!  Dragoon will still be referenced when this project is done

Background sprites are being worked on right now by two other individuals for level design as they're hard at work to when they can manage!  Sadly we are losing our main programmer due to real life reasons getting in the way so our MMC5 sound engine is just hovering in place right now while we work onward.  Our music creator has been very patient with all of this for when things get rolling again on the sound engine and a new track is out I shall link their page to here for others to listen in on the AoC soundtrack!

Other than that, things are moving along!  We thank all of those for showing support towards this!

...and if anyone does ask.  Yes, this project is Legends NES 2.  To what Dragoon wanted and what I took over for him with the help of Toffi.  True this will be coming out way before Legends NES but that's the plan for how we're going to tell this story

ENEMY ALERT:
The original crow has been devoured and replaced by the Nachtkrapp, a horrid minion of the night. Children beware, legends say that after sundown the Nachtkrapp hunts, looking for fresh meat. If it sees you, the Nachtkrapp will lift you away to its nest and gruesomely devour you, ripping off your limbs before picking out your heart. The Nachtkrapp can't exactly lift adults off into the night though (because of its small size) however if encountered, legends recommended to look away. As a simple glance at the monsters empty eye sockets is said to cause sickness and death.
Credit goes out to Emco for the design.

Nothing but love for this project, and of course to my buddies working on it. Good luck, wish i had more time resource available to help out more, but tbh i'm already invested so much in Space Complex in that i don't see me doing much, at least for now. Good luck and i will be following the process, and maybe contribute whenever my timetable allows it. :)

Just a tiny update.

Building a stage to what one of our sprite artists made!  I'm redoing some stuff from what showed on my AoC livestream to get things ready for overhauling sprites so I can hit this stage hard and heavy once the current Port Stage is complete as it's been going on long enough.

I've been extremely busy with real life stuff so haven't been too productive.  Placing my projects into my daily routines so nothing gets pushed back nor to the side as AoC has been the main focus lately.

Here are some quick and easy updates on how things are coming with the port town:

The town has been optimized a bit further, both clouds and stairs share a tile and the building BG has been broken down to make room for the rest of the stage.

Finally we have some new compressed level art for a factory stage (using a devils forge theme)

We are currently on the look out for people willing to help with stage layouts and character animations, if either of those two interest you we could defiantly use your help.

Thanks Flaviogames! AoC team has been working their hardest to give CV3 their utmost care.
Here's a quick update on the teams progress:
Currently the Port Town stage is nearing completion, the stage has been set. All that's left is to finish up the music (Forge Master's NaOH and Teuthida are tackling the SONIA MMC5 music engine on that front) and the stage boss (Which Forge Master Emco is creating at this very moment).

Some new progress has been made on the next stage in line for creation, the devious Devils Forge. Hanging chains and platforms have been developed alongside a few minor changes to the stages floor for extra detail.

Happy 100th post everyone! Its amazing to see how far things have come, I thank everyone on the AoC team for their passion and support.
Here are some quick updates on AoC.
The Port Town boss has officially reached its phase 2 state thanks to Emco! Now all that's left to complete on it is music, before testing can really begin.

Bouffon is helping create some marvelous still scenes for the title sequence, and a new prologue is being written up to go with them.

Finally, Trax has made a significant breakthrough on the title-screen. We finally have the space to fill in AoC's original mock up with room to spare. That leaves room for possible additions to the title screen in the future.

To conclude, things are quickly moving forward thanks to the dedication of the projects wonderful development partners. With Demo 1's completion in sight, things are looking great.

Hi Flaviogames! The current build still uses the original Castlevania 3's save codes instead of a built in save feature. This is because the original NES cart (and the MMC5 ROM build) did not have the unique battery memory section built in to save game progress. If your playing on an emulator with save states, you can load and save at any time during game-play. This option is available with flash cart play as well. If AoC desperately needed a save feature, we would have to modify the games internal ROM. Once we change the board layout, emulators would no longer classify it as the same CV3 ROM. (at least from what I have been told)

ENEMY ALERT:
Bone pillars have been given new life in the form of the unnerving Tsukumogami, a spirit of evil from Japanese folklore. According to legend, neglected or misused items could obtain a spirit (named a kami), which would turn the object into a monstrous Tsukumogami. After Dracula's horrid resurrection in 1897, all those who stood against him perished. Many of them were melded into Tsukumogami via curse. While these haunted cannons are unable to move on their own, they can fire out multiple rounds of fire in a row (which can eat away at a Belmonts health quickly if gone unnoticed) so stay on the lookout!

one thing u don’t like about castlevania games is that enemies get 3 life bars when they hit, should only get 1 for the game to be fun for everyone, so it would be a good option for difficulty in the game

Hi Flaviogames!
The damage a player takes is directly connected with the games 6502 ASM code. Most of AoC's programmers have their hands full with the games sound engine and bug fixing, however I can most certainly look into it.

Toffi: great, if it is possible to add a menu to choose difficulty it would be great, as I noticed that an enemy takes 3 bars out of life this level would be difficult, normal take 2 bars and easy take out only 1, if you want super difficult level for either now is used to castlevania can take 4 bars, the game would be great for veterans and novice players today, a pity not being able to add saves system, I never write down the choruses to continue, I zero at once or nothing

I found the damage table as well as some indexes (because the game is stupidly overengineered) associated with each enemy. I think there is two tables for the two difficulty levels. The hard difficulty setting is activated when you finish the game once.

Trax:so is there a more difficult level than we already know but isn’t there an easier level? I can't imagine what that level would be like, in short there is no way to have an easier level in the game? please can you answer me how many colors can nes display on the screen at the same time? I created some sprites from New super Mario bros from NDS with the colors of this example mario with only 3 colors and other sprites too, I created elements to set the scene and in total I think I have 15 colors at the same time, and if not too much how many sprites can Nes have in a walking animation? I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but I couldn't find this information, if you want to see the work I can post it on 4shared and let the link download and tell me if it would be possible, I really liked the look, but I'm not a programmer :-[
Title: Re: Castlevania III 35th Anniversary (NES) Hack: Aperture of Corruption
Post by: Toffi on May 27, 2021, 09:38:36 pm
In short yes, there is an ungodly hard mode to CV3, there is no easy mode in the original title. Enemy damage is calculated on a level by level basis, the projectiles in stage 1 only dish out 1 damage (the smallest amount in the game) The only 'easy' version I have heard of is CV3's JPN release Akumajo Dracula. The damage is not based on level, its on enemy type (projectiles from bone towers will always be 1, instead of taking 2 and 3 in later levels). From what I have heard, parts of JPN's code is still in ROM, it might just be a dead end though.

Non related NES facts:
The console can work with 16 active colors (plus one if your really working your hardest) at its max. This is separated up into 12 sprite colors and 12 BG. Each of these 12 colors is broken up into 4 colored banks, all banks MUST share 1 color (known as the base color) this leaves 3 active colors and 1 transparent one in the case of sprites.
The console can only generate 4 colors in 16x16 blocks (although the newest MXM-0 cart may bring that down to 8x8) sprites that have more than 4 colors use whats called a sprite overlay, where 2 palates lay on top on one another to simulate more than 3 colors, this technique takes up a lot of space, so be sure not to go to crazy with that fact.

The NES can render up to 8 8x8 tile sprites in one scan-line, you can push that limit by sprite flickering, however this can cause slow down.
Im not a programmer, but sites like https://bitbeamcannon.com/nes-graphical-specs/ may be able to help.

Toffi:thank you for the informations, but if by chance during the work you see that it is possible to add menu for level including easy equal to rom j, and also the hack to improve the jump be sure to do this, the game the more it has options the more people it will attract , I want to include a comment that maybe nobody has thought about it, would it be possible to add a way for chicore to reach enemies that are coming from behind? I already noticed that in the animation of castlevania the whip also goes behind but it does not have any effect on the enemies that are coming from behind and so we are hit, I think it was a mistake because I already played several other games that work this way

:MEGA CHR UPDATE:
Thanks to the help from our newest sprite artist Ontar, the first newcomer to the team has finally made their first appearance. The mysterious magician Saint Germain has stepped forward out of the darkness! For those who dont know, Saint Germain made his first debut in Curse of Darkness, where he appeared as a bizarre time traveler working with Aeon while looking for a 'perfect timeline'. Most know him from the Netflix show.

In AoC, Germain is native to 1897, and runs a traveling circus. (explaining his flamboyant clothing and personality) On his way through Transylvania, Dracula's forces capture the circus and bring them to his castle. Dracula gives the circus's ring leader (Saint Germain) a simple, yet horrifying ultimatum. Join Dracula's forces or perish. Germain weighs the options and chooses to join forces with Dracula, shaking the demon lord’s hand in agreement. Dracula recoils after the handshake is complete, laughing as the entire circus crew is transformed into mindless monsters in-front of him. Now under Dracula's control, the circus sets up shop, preparing for an everlasting show.

Here is a complete sprite timeline from Germains 8 bit mock up to his 80% graphically completed current iteration.

Thanks for the tip! Most of these characters are completely new to the NES, so implementation is still being actively completed. Things are still moving forward on the pixel art side of things, and the design will most likely continue to go though edits before getting anywhere near a final release. This kind of feedback is super help-full in developing things further, I'm glad to see people invested in helping us get things right.

Hey Folks! AoC team has been working hard recently, and I wanted to give a little progress update for you all.

Thanks to your feedback, Germain's sprites were given a bit more time in the development oven. The current build if still being built up, and its likely more iterations are to come. Here is a time-lapse of the progress we have made since the last RHDN post to correct the proportions. Credit goes out to Ontar for the wonderful animations, and Emco for the proportional corrections and most recent design.

Thanks to the amazing work of Bouffon and Subotai, the devils forge stage is coming along quite nicely. Optimization has allowed us to add in a ton of extra details into the CHR bank, and despite the sections length, we hope to make things as interesting as possible. While development on the graphical end of things is wrapping up, implementation and level design has just begun, so expect to see more on that front soon.

Last but not least, NaOH has passed over some super early glimpses at the games SONIA engine. Its been in development since the project started, so seeing things come together like this is a blessing for all the MMC5 enthusiasts out there. Teuthida has been masterfully crafting the games ost behind the scenes, and has been helping NaOH fine tune things to ensure everything comes out just right.

Another Quick Update on the Devils Forge stage. Things are coming along nicely and a working ROM version is being assembled.
Our design process for the forge was to explain the Claudia's use of magic and technology. The Devils Forge is essentially the birthing spot for all of the mechanical foes the crew faces through AoC.

Dracula and Claudia set up the Devils forge as a way of imbuing automita (spring powered machines) with souls to better fight the Belmont's. Stage progression would follow the process of making cursed iron.
Here's that process:
Step 1: Mine pure iron and begin transporting it by train to the Devils Forge.
Step 2: Melt the iron into a molten state and fill large pools full of the mixture.
Step 3: Capture victims willing participants and gently drop them into the molten mixture.
Step 4: Presto! Cursed iron is created. Souls become trapped in the magma during its formation and can become a bit rowdy if not stirred from time to time.
Step 5: Refine and pour the mixture into ingots and molds. Let that baby cool before assembly and you have yourself some possessed metal which will fuel your dark empire for the next century!

Here are some test screen shots for the level.

An upper floor has been assembled, with windows and carts full of fuel for the flames.

New flame sprites have been created along with some small UI changes to text.

It's getting great, I wanted to give a suggestion if possible, when I play cartlevania nes 8 bit I miss the snes function when I get a new spell that I already had is visible for about 3 seconds if we want to get it back, would that be possible? sometimes we get a magic we don't want and there's no going back :)

Thanks, that's a pretty good suggestion. It is possible technically, and the code for items is already set up. The only limiting factor there is ASM, as it takes time to manually code functionality on that end. It's defiantly worth looking into though. ;)

Toffi: another important suggestion, when I was playing castlevania dragula x from snes, I noticed that when used, the bubblegum has an animation that shows it going behind the character and even hits an enemy from behind, in nes I see that there is animation, but not hits enemy from behind, it would be good to add this function to the whip, is it possible? write down the suggestions you find interesting so you don't forget

UPDATE:
We were able to add in the item drop from Castlevania Dracula X in with great success with some help from SpiderDave. Thanks to the simple programming needed to enable it, we only had a few game destroying glitches to iron out before getting things just right. ;D

Sprite layering (making items go behind enemies instead of up front) may be a bit too far out of the ASM range atm.

I've been sprucing up the title screen with a few highlights as well.

Toffi: I really liked the title screen, I'm glad that my suggestion about Dracula X's ability to recover magic was added, it's good that when we get a spell we don't like we can recover the other one kkk thanks, but you don't understand about the other one suggestion, maybe I didn't speak correctly, in Castlevania games we use a chain for the attack is that it? I think I had said it was a whip and maybe that's what complicated it, so come on, when I'm playing Castlevania Dracula X and I'm attacking an enemy that is in front of me and soon another one arrives from behind I realized that the enemy behind is also hit by the chain, in Castlevania nes the chain is pulled from behind like in Dracula X, but in nes it does not reach the enemy that is bringing, is it possible to correct this? great job congratulations, i'm looking forward to this game ;D

The projects been running since Dec 2020, so were at the 7 month mark. Currently the games resting at a solid 2 fully designed levels, a custom boss or two, tons of programming work with new features (were at the point where semi-multiplayer gameplay is on the table), a slamming soundtrack with an engine on the way, custom UI elements, traditional art, and more. By the end of the project, team AoC is hoping to have what is essentially a completely new Classic-vania experience using traditional hardware, how close we can get to that goal is up to the people willing to invest their time into the project.

Currently were working on FMV (Forge Master Version) ROM's. We're hoping to get a PB (Public build) IPS out for testing when we finally reach the goal of 100% converting a level (music and sound being the last thing we need to cross off our list). The project's server should open up for testing by that point.

Thanks for the encouraging words StarWyvwern! I would love to chat about testing, you can always DM me on Discord at Toffi#6064 as most of the projects development is going on over there.

Suggestion, could you create a small animation for the chain, type a small combo? This would be incredible would give you more desire to play, I find it strange Castlevania games just have a move when using the chain, what do you think? ;D

MEGA UPDATE:
First off thanks for the support guys, sorry about the wait on that devils forge update. I have a lot of wonderful progress to share.
Thanks to our wonderful sprite artist Ontar team AoC has finally added new whip animations for both the leather and chain whip, this includes the whip upgrade icon as well. ;D

Next up on the chopping block is the devils forge update. Since that last update we have new tiles, new stage obstacles, new enemies and more. The Cherufe has been added as the next monster to AoC's bestiary. They are humanoids made of magma that live at the core of volcanoes, that cause earthquakes and eruptions in Chilean folklore. The ones in the devils forge are a result of cursed iron fabrication, in which souls are trapped within molten iron.

They are not alone though, as the Meri Lwyd has also enlisted into Dracula's devilish forces. The Meri Lwyd is a folk lore monster that comes from the British Isles. It often arrives during late year festivities (like Christmas and new years). The monster will knock at your door and asked to be let in. Tradition states that the residents of the house must respond with an excuse as of why the monster cannot. If they cannot preform this ritual, the monster will come inside and feast on their holiday meal. So in general, if you see one be sure to have a feast prepared, or you might just end up on the monsters plate.  >:D

Last but certainly not least is the save screen re-design. All tiles and palettes have been converted and are currently being prepped for gameplay.

That's all for now folks, look forward for more great things to come in the future from team AoC!

Hi Flavio! Sorry for the late reply, we've been a bit busy as of late. On those two ideas, adding some extra collision data to the whip is possible, but would need a bit of ASM to work, its worth looking into. The whip combo idea sadly would use up too much memory, AoC has a limited amount of ASM data to use, we're trying to ensure we can fit as many wonderful features as possible in and ensuring that our mods take up a small amount of the code is fairly important. Thank you again for your wonderful suggestions, we should have more updates coming soon.

Toffi: thanks for the answer I understand that it will not be possible to have a combo system, but if possible adding a copy in the back when using the whip helps a lot and makes the game more modern, I liked the first portal

Hi all!
My apologies for coming in late with this one, team AoC has been fairly buisy as of late so updates have been rolling out a little less rapidly.

A sneak peak at some new carnival stage concepts have been shown thanks to our newest stage artist Holy Diver!
New designs and edits are coming out frequently, so feel free to give us some pointers on what to improve on down below

Currently the team has been assembling and carefully planning out AoC's Demon Castle, and have been working hard to assemble a list of stages both new and old that will hopefully make this go around extra special. :D

Here is our current list of stage proposals ranked from most popular to least. Each number ranks the popularity on a scale from 1-5 and the brackets represent compounded stage ideas that can combine less popular ideas. If you see a stage you like or think we missed out on a great concept that CV hasn't seen before, let us know below!

5/Throne Room
4/Clock Tower {1/Laboratory}
4/Phantom Library
4/Armory {2/Guards Keep}
3/Botanical Garden {1/Marble Gallery}
2/Astral Observatory
2/Theater {1/Dance Hall OR 1/Music Hall}
2/Jailhouse {1/Execution Chamber}
2/Icebox {1/Kitchen}
1/Chapel
1/Abandoned Mine
1/Underground Boathouse
1/Entrance
1/Wine Cellar{1/Storeroom}

We're also continuing on refreshing our older sprites to establish some extra stylistic consistency. Which will hopefully tie things together nicely.

Howdy folks! I'm back after a bit of a sick break with some project updates.
(Luckily I didn't catch the virus and am feeling a whole lot better now)

First things first.
Our wonderful concept artist Neri has had some irl stuff happen and has retired from the project. If your reading this Neri, thank you for giving the project such wonderful art. Your designs really helped bring our fan project to life and shape a lot of what made this project special. That being said we have a new opening for a concept artist. If your interested in traditional art and or want to help us design the project feel free to DM me here or on Discord, I'm always happy to respond.

Up next, we have some edited Sonia sprites and our first look at Claudia.
It's been quite a long while since this sprite was touched up, and after a bit of experimentation it was found that we could increase character readability by changing up the legs a bit.

Claudia Lecarde is the projects female scientist who fell under Dracula's curse and upgraded his army with 1890's tech (like the battleship and forge previously posted). These are some of the first of many concept sprites before we get to a semi testing ready product.

Last but certainly not least is the games custom sound engine. We have liftoff! A running version of the engine is finally ready to start testing and bug fixing. We still have a long way to go, but things are certainly coming together.

Thank you all for sticking with us despite the lack of new posts.
I hope you enjoyed this little AoC direct.

Excellent stuff once again Toffi  I hope you find a new artist inm place of Neri.

And seems like the custom engine for AoC is taking shape, now we just need custom enemies & bosses, not mention other stuff as well.

Yes the game is currently in a WIP build state, we have the graphics shown properly implemented and the levels capped here have been mostly completed
(excluding the current circus stage which is about 40% complete atm).
However we are still waiting on the development of a unique MMC5 editing tool for proper .nes/ASM ROM insertion. Hopefully we can get started with testing soon, thanks for the question.

Hello Again!
I'm back with some more updates.

Currently the dev team is working on the HUD, this includes boarder's, modified text, and more room.
Here's a sneek peak at some early designs.

Next up on the chopping block is a modified text bank. One of the biggest issues with the games opening at the moment
is space. We had a ton of juicy lore to include, but not enough real estate do that in the original CV3's font,
This modified text is stack-able, and does not need the extra buffer space its predecessor did.
expect more edits to come!

I've been testing the ROM on real hardware to ensure that the project runs well on both emulator and console.
Suffice to say it works! (using an flash cart here)

Lastly, I have a scrapped boss concept from a while back. Sadly the sprite needed a heavy amount of ASM
modding (to the point of it being built from scratch) which was unavailable at the time.
The original link expired so I wanted to post it here again, credit goes to the projects retired hacker Morinis.

Hi Drax01!

Thanks!:D A lot of credit goes to our volunteer dev team, as its through our combined work that stuff like this is possible. AoC is currently in early stages of development. All of AoC is completed on off hours, so development is often slow and steady. Simply put; I can't exactly give out a solid due date, most of our current estimates lean towards a playable demo becoming open to the public before the years end. With our current set up this demo would be a small collection of early levels, enemies and bosses that can be accessed through the password system.

Were Back!
It's been a month folks. I have some pretty juicy updates to chew on.
To start things of we have new stage updates for the Carnival and Clockwork Lab from our epic stage designer Holy Diver.
Next on the list is some major UI changes, which are currently in active development.
Credit goes to Trax for the breakthrough here.

ENEMY ALERT:
Small floating blimp drones have been spotted over the skies of Romania. These dastardly inventions will float in wait until a target is in sight. If a stray Belmont gets caught underneath one they unleash a flurry of tiny bomb's. On their own they don't pose too much of a threat, but be careful they can be deadly when flying in packs or in coordination with wither enemies like axe knights or sword skeletons.

Lastly we have some new updates on team AoC's first cursed boss: Germain is getting the ringleader clown treatment. With some sprite overlay trickery at play we can get away with using a few extra colors here.

Many of the stages and art posted here will be polished before we drop our first demo. So expect to here more from us soon.

It's 21 days till Christmas folks!
Time for another monthly update from the Aperture of Corruption Forge Masters.
For those of you wondering about the frequency of posts be assured that we will continue to post monthly with project updates. AoC's still chugging along and staying on track. Keep in mind the team is doing this in our free time and need external help for progress. If any of you are interested in hopping on board were always looking for newcomers. Right now ASM 6502 work is our greatest limiting factor, so if you have any knowledge on the subject we would be more than happy to chat.

With that out of the way it's update time!
Sprite team has been working hard to push Claudia's move set into its first public demo ready phase. Thanks goes out to Ontar for their excellent BB work. To start we have some science sub-weapons based on WW1 tech.
The flame attack has been reworked into a proper flamethrower, and the lightning attack into a homing rotocopter.
Each attack has it's own book type, teaching Claudia the attack.
Last of the sprites is the crouching and downed sprites.

Next up we have some mini WIP stage progress from the stage team with some help from the masterful HolyDiver. At this rate we may have a whole route completed by the time the sound engine finishes its final rounds of bug testing.

Last but not least, we have made some breakthroughs with CV3's color addresses and have found that CV3's master sprite palette is stored on a level by level basis. This means we have a bit more control over the colors of in game cutscenes and credits (so look out for more edits in the future).

As always, if you have any questions feel free to ask below. If your interested in joining the Forge Masters, please pass me a DM. Thanks for keeping up with the project, and Happy Holidays!

Everything is amazing, won't it be possible to save the game?
Title: Re: Castlevania III Total Conversion (NES) Hack: Aperture of Corruption
Post by: Toffi on December 12, 2021, 01:15:52 am
Hi Flaviogames,
An in ROM save feature has yet to be properly implemented. This is mainly due to the original CV3's board structure not containing an internal battery. Back when these games were being manufactured, any game that needed an onboard save file would have to be directly attached to a small power source to keep the game from loosing all of its save data. Essentially it's a cartridge issue that rom-hacking will not be able to solve alone. In todays day and age, its much easier to save NES data through digital files. Systems like emulators and flash carts
(the main ways to play AoC) will allow for the game to be automatically equipped with quick save support. However ROM data itself will only have the original password save system. Thanks for asking ;D

I just realized we missed the 1 year anniversary of AoC :-\ It was back in December 8th.
Well, I wanted to thank AoC team and all of you wonderful folks here on RHDN for all the support you gave to the project. Thanks to you AoC's gotten:
3 New levels, including new level layouts and complete graphical overhauls
(one new level in progress)
2 Completely new graphical bosses
(one boss in progress)
3 New characters
(1 character left to go)
16 New enemy types
11 Original tracks tested

Weapon Drops
Faster cross movement
Faster door loading
Faster stair climbing
Instant character swapping
and even a super early form of a 2p swap out mode

(still a WIP that needs a whole new ROM to properly work)

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone.
New updates should be rolling in this January.

Hello nek10,
From a professional standpoint, the turn around time from project creation to completion can be as little as a year. In todays day and age, many people expect to see games come out as soon as they are announced; which is why most professional studios keep their projects well hidden until late in development.
As an independent dev team, things work a little bit differently.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when estimating the time of AoC's completion:

1. The original Castlevania 3 took 3 years to complete with a masterful team, full pay, and the proper equipment.

2. Many tools the original team had (like the games MMC5 music implementer) have been lost to time. Our little team of Forgemaster's has to rebuild all of those tools from scratch. Many of us are not as experienced with the hardware as the original team was, so our work takes much more time.

3. Despite the fact we have fully mapped the games ROM and RAM addresses; every mod we produce has the capability of crashing the game entirely. Introducing new features also means combating new bugs, which takes time without a ton of extra ASM help.

4. None of us are paid for our work on this project, we rely on our volunteer work to help make AoC a reality. The CV3 team used almost every day of those 3 years to build up what many consider to be one of the best games on the system. AoC team only has vacation days, weekends, and any other free time we can spare. This is why were constantly looking for new Forgemaster's, every day counts.

Even 4 years of dedicated work can be considered optimistic by some. The teams come quite a ways since the games start a year ago. In that time we've done a whole lot, and I hope we can do a whole lot more in the years to come. With projects like this, endurance is key.

Keeping the spirit of AoC alive for 4 or more years is no easy feat, which is why its wonderful to see the support here on RHDN.
Thank you all for giving us the strength to keep moving forward!
Have a Happy New Year guys!

Happy 2022 guys! Let's cover all of the advancements made over December.
Quncy's time to shine folks, he's one of the last test build characters to get their form and has had some of the largest changes of any character on our current roster. So lets take a trip down development lane and see the AoC dev pipeline from art to sprite.
Back when we were connecting lore pieces together, the 4th character slot was given to a original charter named Ezekiel. That way we could have 2 recurring hero's in the forms of Sonia and Germain and 2 new ones with Claudia and Ezekiel. The idea to use Quincy Morris really fell into place with the concept of using a spear as the weapon of choice. Later that idea was refined into using the Alucard Spear and John Morris' father Quincy.
After the main idea was outlined a concept sprite was pulled together, we started gathering up features of the Bloodlines sprites like the short 'brown' hair and facial structure to establish a familial bond between those slick sprites Genesis, and older NES ones.
However we ran into a big problem, Grant's bank wasn't designed for a clunky spear and the CHR bank just couldn't pull off climbing and the spear wielding at once, we would need massive ASM mods to pull something off with the space CV3 gave us. Ultimately it was decided that we had to scrap either the spear, or the hacked character. In short the weapon had to go. This December, our wonderful sprite artist Ontar helped outfit a new design that uses a much smaller iron claw inspired by the Bagh Nakhya (tiger paw) which existed since the 1200's.
With this in mind, AoC team is diligently working on more frames to help get this last character onto the roster.
To finish off here's a few alternant designs that eventually evolved into Quincy's current design.

Thanks for joining in for another round of updates, with the advent of a new year come a ton of new opportunities and goals, I want to thank each and every one of you for an awesome 2021. Here's to another year of progress!

Just my two cents, but I would have gone with a bowie knife for Quincy.
And a rifle for a sub-weapon if possible.

I just always think of the movie version of him when he comes up.

The teams come quite a ways since the games consumption a year ago.

I can relate to that. The most important thing is to keep having fun making your dream game. And take all the time you need to make it just like you dreamed of. For Epic Racers that turned out to be 17 years, but I am improving. Zelda II - Amida's Curse "only" took 18 months.  ;)

Looking great Toffi, I'll keep an eye on this project! Step by step, and one day we'll all enjoy the fruits of that labor!  :)

Here's to another round of AoC monthly updates!
February's finally here folks! Time for a little progress report.
Let's take a peak behind the curtain to see how things are going.

We finally have some clock tower progress to show. This forgotten Transylvanian clock tower has been overtaken by vines and forgotten to time. Well mostly, after almost 400 years of dormancy the army's of the night have arisen again and have since claimed the tower as their own. Under the influence of Dracula's Curse, the team's scientist Claudia has taken residence in the tower. Using it as a lab and partially docking bay for Dracula's airship armada.

Say hello to AoC's brand new, sweet looking HUD. Thanks goes out to Trax for their dedication and preservice over months of ASM editing. Suffice to say the effort absolutely shows here.

Lastly, we finally cracked CV3's text code! It's been a year, but we finally have the ASM in place to give us the freedom to start experimenting with the intro, credits sequence, and character cutscenes.
So expect to here more from us soon.

I'm watching this thread for a good while and decided to stop by to say you're doing an amazing work. You are a really talented person and know how 8-bit graphics work. You take advantage of the color palet in a clever way it makes the visuals a marvel to look at, congrats.

Who's ready for another round of AoC's monthly update post?
I know I am!

March has arrived and spring is on its way. We've made some major breakthroughs using the recent .tbl rip, and are starting to make some text related changes to the original CV3 ROM. Here's what we have so far:
First up we have the title screen, which has been slowly becoming better and better as the project continues. Recently the team has added extra altered text where the begin and password buttons used to be.
Next we have the completely remodeled password screen, which has been drastically changed as well. One major design challenge the team faced here was that were stuck with the current name table. So without ASM modifications all CHR modifications are stuck in place. So instead of hassling over making a new screen while fitting their older placements, we decided to upgrade the graphics within the confines of their setting and theme. (an overgrown wall) and added in some new pallets for some extra spice.
Also, the intro crawl has finally gotten its time to shine. While the graphics for the intro have yet to be completed, the text has been updated to match the new story. Again, since name tables for everything outside of levels is completely locked without ASM were mostly sticking to upgrading and modifying original.
Finally to end this round of updates, we have a few experimental tiles. The team is getting ready to convert its next level: 'Mad Forest' so stay tuned for future updates.

Hi Ardiloso. Thanks for your complements on AoC! The ForgeMaster development team has done a massive amount of work when it comes to sprites, backgrounds, music, programming and much more. It means a lot to see people really enjoying this project.

Don't worry about anyone abandoning AoC drax01. Progress has been flowing steadily and new content is trickling in almost every month. Everything's been set up so that we can continue to post progress on AoC in both hot periods (where forgemasters have free time to volunteer) and cold periods (times which a team member is busy with real life work).

Spring is here! The birds are singing, flower's are blooming, and plants are growing. With Easter just around the corner, lets hop into AoC's month development blog.

For starters we entering the end game for our first ASM modded boss, The Crimson Fool. This devilish clown appears in the carnival stage in his own private dressing room.

=An early excerpt from the games manual=
The mysterious magician Saint Germain is the headmaster for a traveling circus. On its way through Transylvania, forces of the night capture the circus members caravan and bring them to CastleVania. Upon arrival; Dracula orders to see the party's leader. Once locating Germain he gives a simple, yet horrifying ultimatum. Join forces, or perish. So with no other options Germain chooses to join forces with Dracula, shaking the demon lord’s hand in defeat. To which Dracula recoils in laughter, subsequently Dracula's Curse takes hold and all in agreement transform into mindless monsters. Those unwilling souls remaining are consumed by their family and friends. Now under Dracula's control, this haunted circus sets up shop in Transylvania, preparing for an everlasting show.

The main inspiration for Germain's curse form, comes from machiavellian attire of Edgar Allen Poes "The Masque of the Red Death".

Over time this concept evolved into the Fool's Tarrot card. It fit the character's personality (spontaneous and fluid) and their situation as the inverse is a person who has fallen into a state of poverty and deprivation. It also fit's what Dracula sees Germain as, a personal entertainer who was foolish enough to take his offer of eternal torment over a quick and panful death.

Alrighty, enough lore talk, onto the sprites!
Cv3 actually gave us the opportunity to sprite overlay for this boss, which really helped sell the evil jester look. For those unfamiliar, on rare occasions NES devs a special technique that helped them expand the NES's active color range from 3 colors per sprite to 6. This was accomplished by using sprite overlay's, where one sprite is layered on top of another. In order to use all six colors holes are inserted into the overlay to show the colors of the sprite beneath it. In combination these two sprites can make a 6 colored image (in this case were limited to 5, as CV3's 2 master color sets are in effect.)

Next up on our list is the 2nd stage in our game the Wallachian Necropolis, based off of the irl Necropolis rail line that took the dead on an underground train ride which connected the dense city to massive external grave-yards. Here's some of our current test versions of the stage, in which we explore the underground rail line (extended from the previous stage), the massive grave yard where the mad forest once resided, and a memorial chapel(soon to come)

Thanks for the kind word's Arcade-Elite :D we cant wait to get this ready for playable testing.

I read you loud and clear Drax01! Hopefully thing continue to get better and better as we gain a greater mastery over the engine.

Hi Flavio, AoC's been in the works for about a year now. As for percentage of completion I would say were roughly at the 25% completion mark, however adding in new features and stages may increase the time it takes for things to be complete. I would check out Reply #178 of this thread for more details on the proposed timeframe.

Currently our biggest roadblock to a public WIP release is music and sfx, while the sound engine is primed and ready it STILL needs time to develop the games soundtrack and jump CV3's unique hurdles. At the moment certain effects get still corrupted, including DCPM, so to give you guys the best the ForgeMaster's can offer were holding off until we can get music implemented.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!

Spring is in full swing. May the 4th be with you! It's time for another update from AoC's month development blog.

Starting us off is one massive level update. We've officially started working using the MMC5's extra bank space. This idea goes all the way back to AoC's first post back in 2020. Way back then the idea of doubling the bank space was seen as a distant impossibility. It took a while, but we've finally entered a new era of development.
What's magical about CV3 US version in particular is what AoC team calls the 'voidspace'.
During translation CV3 was taken from the famicoms VRC6 chip to MMC5 for the NTSC and PAL units of the game. Many people viewed this translation as a lesser version. The VRC6 used FM synthesis and the US version had less sound quality and was much harder than its famicom version. However that switch to MMC5 actually has one massive advantage over its famicom counter part. The MMC5 has a massive amount of space, far greater than the VRC6 version, in US builds a massive amount of static unfilled space was left in the CHR registry.
With some cleaning and bank swapping we can tap into that gigantic ammount of empty space and expand the game far past its original limits both graphically and mechanically. Currently the ROM size has been boosted from 311.2KB to 512KB, and can theoretically be expanded to a titanic 1MB at its maximum capacity.
So what does this mean going forward? Technically speaking the extra CHR space given will allow for more detailed levels, new stage specific enemy variants, higher quality DCPM samples, and more room for ASM manipulation.

Before we go, here's one last reveal...
-ENEMY ALERT-
The possessed hannya shaman's mask 般若 hides in the shadows. These accursed masks are rumored to portray the souls of women who have become demons due to obsession or jealousy. Their use in ritual kagura dances have possessed them with vengfull spirits looking for new wearer's to puppet. Collected by Dracula on his many travels; these foe's seamlessly glide through the air. In high number's they can easily become overwhelming.

Glad you liked the boss design Ok Impala!

I agree Googie. I can't wait to get a proper demo build up and running for you guys to play with.
I'm looking forward to comparing the our first build with the final one to see just how much the team grew over the years.

Thanks for the compliment Flaviogames. I hope we can reach that goal someday. ;)

No need to fret StarWyvern, progress is steadily growing and with the help of the teams development partner's were only picking up steam as time goes on. In the event that some major event stops progress plans have been put into place which should mean a prototype build (internally known as PRB_10.1a) would be automatically released.

If you have some extra info on sprite overlays I would be more than happy to hear about it Xander max! It's a great thing to learn and could provide a whole new layer of depth for a wide variety of NES titles if implemented using ASM. Knowledge is power!

Awsome that you have more space now for a bigger castlevania rom. But we need more levels and bosses then cv3. I don't think we need more graphics, Gamers want more fun  :) or hell max this new rom size out and make 3 games, castlevania xx part 1, xx part2, xx part 3. I have a friend that makes multicarts for nes. And if you guys might do this in the future i could put all 3 games on a multicart like how ninja gaiden trilogy was for snes. Just an idea. the pictures look dope. Keep up the good work.

Having more levels is certainly feasible. At least, free space is not a problem, and even level length is probably highly modifiable. I can see problems emerge because of the transition between levels, for example. Or how to manage forked paths, which also involve a special "cut-scene" where the player can actually move. If adding entire levels appears to be too hard to accomplish, having longer levels can do the job to an extent.

Having more ROM space is a real blessing for ROM hackers. For Ember of Mana we managed expand the ROM too. Making it possible to create far more detailed and interesting maps. This not only makes a game better from a graphical perspective, but it also opens lots of possibilities for gameplay improvements. Great update Toffi!  :)
