Title: Bomberman (NES) "Remastered" (100% Finished)
Post by: imkrut on May 08, 2020, 04:44:20 pm
Hey friends!

Here's my latest! project (4th one!), this time it's a graphic makeover for the original Bomberman for NES.
I tried messing around with backgrounds and using them as a way to actually improve the game, so in this case there are some UI items, and part of the background complement the tileset.

I actually wanted to improve the animations, but just wasn't feasible with the way Bomberman handles animations (the character stays in the current frame of the animation permanently), however, I did come across this wonderful hack/patch (Bomberman Coop (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3335/)  made by Corpse Grinder) which adds a 2 player co-op mode. I have all the assets ready to support this, however I'm unsure of the etiquette here, and if it can add the patch (keeping all the documentation obviously) to the pack, (so if someone can chip-in, I'll be glad to post the content too).

Anyway, here is some media, and the download right at the end!

Nice!
I've wondered for a while why more MESEN stuff hasn't been popping up.
Now you're doing a tone of games single-handed.
Well done!

Very cute indeed. The original game looks really crude, I wonder how many of those changes can be applied directly to the ROM without mesen's special functionalities.

Haha, thanks mate! Hope I can keep pumping em' out.

Thank you!!

Other than the extra colors (that I guess I can tone down to 4 per tile) most of it is just a facelift, so I'm guessing it's quite possible. Thank you!

These are awesome! How long does it take you to do something like this? And any games you plan on doing next? (Curiously waiting for your next one.)

Depends on the game, how much new stuff I've learned and how much free time I get.

Donkey Kong Jr. took the least time probably, but that also has to do with how limited my knowledge was on what I could do (so no new animations, no backgrounds, etc).

I'm currently working on Battle City, which is a game I'm very fond of.

Most games I've tackled have very limited graphics, something that works in my favour/makes the dev. time of graphic shorter. I'd love to tackle bigger projects (hell maybe setup a vote poll as to what work on next with maybe patreons or something so popular demand gets to pick) I looked for example into Metal Storm, which is a absolutely gorgeous game animation wise, but graphically could really use a pick me up...and it needs LOTS of graphics, so that would probably take a while.

yes, battle city. cool. There is a 4 player hack of this out there. I can't see why this wouldn't be compatible, right?

I'm a bit confused. Will this patch work with a regular ROM in a normal emulator or not? If not, would it be possible to make a patch for both MESEN and for regular emulators? Because this patch immediately makes the original Bomberman so much more appealing to me.

As it is right now it's only for Mesen.

At least with Bomberman Co-Op, I had to do a specific graphic dump for it, it didn't work out of the box.

Hey there!

If you are taking requests, in some sense at least, there are some great choices out there in much need of a fresh coat of paint. I look at this from a game preservation stand point, etc.

How about the original "Double Dragon"!  :)

For some reason that game gets very little love, and surprisingly there are few hacks. But the demand is hot, and it would certainly put you on the map.

Because that games skillfully re-uses SO many of the same characters, I would imagine it's not that much of a challenge since they are actually few sprites involved. Plus there are SO MANY sprite rips out there for the arcade game and other versions of it that you don't have to kill yourself making your own, etc.

Same goes for "Pro-Wrestling". A great game but woefully in need of some love.

Runner ups include: Battletoads, Contra, and Excitebike.

Love the hacks you've done so far and have included them in my rig.

Hoping for some "Double Dragon" love here. Thanks again!

If you want help on the art side of that, hit me up and I can make suggestions on how to refresh that. A good double dragon update would be a big hit with this scene.

Thanks again for taking feedback!

My collection of games with HD rendering in Mesen, if you happen to know any more, please tell me? Thank you.

It does look very nice.
I'd love to see FF3 get the upgrade treatment though. Using GBA graphics would make it look incredible, I feel.

MUSCLE springs to mind. The NES game is all chunky and awkward looking next to its GBA successor.
Edit: It seems to be already done. http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4281/ (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4281/)

FYI this is not a romhack. Also, its a misnomer to call these "patches". These are more properly called "HD packs".

Did you make an HD Lode Runner sprite for the ending as well? Otherwise, there would be a significant graphical mismatch, IMO.

OMG this looks incredibly beautiful. I really wish this could be done as a ROM hack, the same with your Bomberman facelift, to be able to normally play it on a CRT.

Lame.  Thanks for the info.  I think a remaster like this would be great for the first Bomberman.

I wouldn't call it lame. It's actually pretty damn cool and takes quite a bit of effort and work.
The only caveat is that you have to play it on MESEN on a computer, rather than real hardware.

I dont think he meant the project itself was lame, I think he meant that the fact (or realization) that this wasnt playable on original hardware was lame.
