Title: SMB2 - Super Beatles - Pepperland

So, this is my dream for many years. I already mentioned it in the Hack Ideas thread but I thought I'd give it a go.

This is how far i've got. The character select screen is ok... but gosh. Those graphics. Such a hard game to hack!

What are my chances of changing all the music into beatles tunes?

I guess I have to hex edit (a lot). Will this rom map help?

I've never done music hacking before. But I always wanted to learn. All I know is that it's very time consuming and almost impossible.

Would I be better off hacking Super Mario All Stars? I heard music hacking is easier on the SNES.

Ok. So thanks to the ROM map I managed to corrupt the music in the selection screen, main theme and subspace. I just went to the music adress and changes a bunch of numbers.

I didn’t sound like The Beatles but now I know WHERE the music is!

I guess I have to compose 8bit renditions of Beatles songs in Famitracker and somehow put in the code. Seem like a lot of work... like... months.

Anyways what songs should I try to put in?


Yellow Submarine is a must. Perhaps I'll stick to some of the songs from The Yellow Submarine Soundtrack Album.

Yellow Submarine - Main Theme
Hey Bulldog - Underground.

The Super Mario World music engine specifically is very well-documented at this point, but that's the only thing that makes it easier.  I think I read something once about how it's possible to force other games in SMAS+SMW to use the SMW engine instead, but that might have been random speculation.

As is often the case, if you can't find any indication that anyone has ever done this kind of music-hacking before, it is indeed going to be almost impossible.  You might want to look into that some more before you get too deep into Famitracker.

(On that note, there are surely MIDI versions of most Beetles songs floating around out there that could be adapted with some ease.)

I think you have to go with the Sgt. Pepper title track for the character select screen.

Personally, I'm partial to Magical Mystery Tour. Fool on the Hill, Your Mother Should Know, Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane all seem like solid choices for videogame music.

I forgot to mention that it is also reasonably easy to make an "MSU-1" hack in a SNES game.  Instead of reverse-engineering the whole sound engine, you just cut out the existing music entirely and insert a single instruction that says "start playing this external sound file".  (Or that's my understanding, at least.)  In fact, you could even use the original Beatles music!

But I have to admit fighting something resembling Birdo while an 8-bit version of Eleanor Rigby burbles in the background it quite appealing.

I'm starting to figure out what I'm supposed to do... and how!
No, music yet. But I guess I'll have to learn. Good thing I'm a musician! I have never used Famitracker though.

I’m switching from Tile Layer Pro to Tile Molester. Boy, what a difference. Now I can actually copy and paste stuff! Sure speed things up.

Update:
- Finished the sprites for the playable characters.
- Switched characters (more like the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s)
- Started to edit enemies

Yeah, that's just placeholder. I haven't figured how to remap title screens yet. I actually opened up Bowsette yesterday in Tile Molester just to see what you've done. But I couldn't quite understand.

The colors aren't that great either. Let's say I made it this ugly to remember that I have to fix it. ;)

released a SMB2 Editor and is apparently working on a music editor. I'll have to investigate that further.

If I were you, and really serious about following through with this hack, I would consider contacting the developer and maybe get some insight in the music format. Maybe you can help each other out?

Personally I'd go with more varied and highly-vibrant colors for the title screen (better fitting of the theme imo), but the design of your latest iteration shows how wonderfully you're improving things!

Considering your dedication to the material and talent, can't wait to see where this goes from here!

So,still now news on the music editor. But now I've managed to get some time to start working on level design. I got to take inspiration from the film.

There's still much to do with the graphics as well. The bosses need to be replaced with characters from Yellow Submarine.

I'll get by... with a little help from my friends.

A distant concern at this point, probably, but those should read "Pepper's" and "Colors".  (Possibly "Colours".  But not "Coulours".)

I can almost hear the narrator's voice and it would be cool to have that introduction but I can only fit so much text and I like it to explain why The Beatles are the Lonely Hearts Club Band all of a sudden.

The vegetables should change into something. Hearts maybe. Or musical instruments? 

I'd love to discuss ideas with anyone who may be interested. Like I said I could use a little help with level design, if any one's interested?

Since I'm still having huge trouble in changing the music, perhaps I should just release this current version (without The Beatles music or new levels) here on RHDN?

If I'm going to finish the music by myself we're looking at at least another year or two of learning, composing and hacking.

What do you guys think?

I'm a huge Beatles fan and couldn't have been more excited for this.
I see that you want to implement Beatles music, but don't know how and you're waiting for the music editor to be created and use it.
I have been reading some documentation of how the SMB1 music is written on the ROM, and started to compare it with SMB2. It seems that its written in a similar way (not sure up to what point).
I see there's the ROM map for SMB2, and it is helpful in locating each track, as well as its pointers, headers and music data.
I have modified a few notes (and rhythm) of Pulses 1 and 2 for the title screen, but I still need to experiment and document a little more in order to know how it is done properly. But, I would love to adapt the music.
I saw that you had a couple of music lists intended for the game but, have you decided which songs and where do you plan to put them?

I've started to rule out the Smb2 music editor. I've spoken to dtothefourth and they seem to be doing a lot of other things.

I have also managed to change some things in boss battle music with Birdo. I would rather focus on graphics and level design.
I could compose the music in Famitracker but that's just for reference, since the smb2 music engine is something completely different.

If you are willing to take on the challenge with hacking the music I couldn't be happier!

Instead of just using the default Mario 2 USA music?

That's all i really want to know.

I've seen Mario graphics hacks and that's about it.

Is it really being worked on?  Or is it possible the Music changing you are going to do might not happen anyways?

I see. Better to keep doing process than wait for a tool that might not be ready that soon.

It's a good idea to use Famitracker for reference, but yeah, the engine on SMB2 is a different story.

I would love to! I just need to document carefully to have what it's needed pin down, so attempts for implementation can be done effectively.

Ok, so this project is not dead. I'm only sleeping. But I've picked this up and will do more levels. And I've added more bosses from Yellow Submarine.

It was quite tricky to repurpose Fryguy into the Dreadful Flying Glove. Thanks iridium_ionizer for the graphics btw.

Fryguy uses mirrored animations and that messed up the graphics.

Looks fantastic and thanks for the shout-out. In the the movie Glove contorts himself into different "gestures," so I think this boss gives you a fair amount of leeway into what he looks like in the animations.

Alright, so I just wanted to say that I've finished my studies and I've got a new job. So things are settling down and  I'll be finishing up this hack this summer. Gee, I wonder if the Sea of Science and the Sea of Holes don't exactly make for inspiring level design aesthetics on the NES? And for completely opposite reasons, weirdly enough

The Sea of Science is way too many colors and geometric shapes distorting and stuff for a NES to ever handle. And the sea of holes is literally just that. Levels that are only two colors (and mostly white at that) I think were also hard to pull off on the NES simply because it limits the palette too much, I would think.

Still, what is done is highly impressive. I'm hearing Eleanor Rigby in my head even. Nicely done.

The first name I came up with was actually Super Beatle Bros.  :laugh:

It is a game adaption of the film Yellow Submarine but I wanted to call it something else to differentiate it from the song, film, album. It just felt lazy and uninspiring to just call it The Beatles or Yellow Submarine and Pepperland sounded more exciting.

We also noticed that Shauing did too good of a job implementing the songs into the game as YouTubes algorithms actually make claims on the music. This is at least true to my test video I uploaded to YouTube with with no commentary. So we´re thinking of adding a disclaimer to the readme:

It never even crossed my mind to do a PAL version, even though I live in Europe. But I spent this day trying to figure out how to port it to PAL and it seems like a whole lot of work. I managed to force the hack to be PAL but everything is slow motion.

The official version will have to do for now.

The hack was updated to version 1.2. This is likely the last update unless someone discover something really game breaking.

Changes:
Spoiler:
Deleted WARP text since warp is mandatory in some parts of the game
Edited subspace colors in world 4 and 6 for consistency
Changed hill graphics in world 6
Bluer sky in world 1 to see the clouds
Added movable heads in 3-3
Semi solid rainbow platforms in 3-3 instead of solid
Changed some platform types in 3-3 for consistency
Added plant guitar to easier defeat boss in 4-3
Added apple to secret area in level 5-2
Added bombplant in level 5-3
Deleted some bombablebricks in 5-3 to avoid crash
Deleted hill ground in 5-3 by bombablebricks to avoid crouch softlock
Lowered Bulldog Boss platform in level 5-3
Added second plant to easier defeat boss in 5-3
New level design in level 6-1
level 6-2 secret area 1up better placement to avoid glitch

We also included a download link to a experimental PAL patch with faster movement and music for those who would like to run on PAL hardware. It has not been tested on real hardware and we cannot guarantee it will work.

And the fantastic music... right? Every single note is so delightful to hear.

(Forgot how slippery SMB2 controls were. Gotta use that run button sparingly.)

Honestly, I avoided this hack until the end. Because I was not attracted to hacks on SMB 2 USA, due to the fact that it is already a hack... However, at the request of "John the Cat" - I tried it. And, you know - I honestly don't know what version he gave me, but for the test - the hack really tightened. Pretty good graphics, everything is well redrawn. And the cherry on the cake turned out to be music. I've never-never heard of a NON-MARIO hack making music changes.

Although I am not familiar with the Beatles' music and their history, but the hack is really well done. If they were given this, I think they would be happy with such a gift :-)  :thumbsup:
