This is just a hilarious mistake from when I tried to mod the Two Player Hack of SMB1. Play co-op as Mario and Luigi in random levels with strange glitches such as walking through walls. Have that reset button prepared tho. Some levels are impossible to beat due to the randomness of this mistake of a hack.

not really a hack per-se but if my memory serves me, FF9 on ps1 has natively support for 2 players (decide controller for characters in combat.) i always thought it was pretty cool since it's not really the kind of game you'd think of playing with 2 people.

I don't know about FF9, but FF IV definitely does have that option (on PS1). And there are hacks to add this to FF III: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1797/ and FF V: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2122/.

Nice to see this get some attention. I really love these hacks as well and I will create some myself too. I'll make a personal projects topic once I've made some progress.

BTW: Secret of Evermore is in the NES section. ;)

This is a great idea. I didn't even know anyone had done a 2 player mod before, let alone a dozen or so. I'm actually curious to know what steps were taken to achieve some of these. I should investigate and think about doing one myself. :D

But anyone who suggests Final Fight SNES can GTFO, just play the Sega CD or arcade versions. ;)

That's very insensitive towards the SNES gamers who really want to play Final Fight on their console in multiplayer. Not everyone is interested in playing on PC, obtaining another version or getting new hardware. :P

1. My PC is plugged into my TV, so it makes little difference to me.
2. Obtaining? You mean finding a second-hand physical copy? If that's the case, what use is a patch?
3. The SNES came out almost 30 years ago, I think you'll be okay getting some new hardware. ;)

Hey, if someone else wants to do it then be my guest, but I'd rather do something more unique.

1. It's not about you(r TV), but those other gamers who like to play on an actual SNES (Classic).
2. The point is that not everyone will be interested in getting another version. They'd rather see a rom hack for the version they own. Despite its shortcomings compared some of the other versions, Final Fight SNES is well-loved.
3. Just because you have access to newer hardware doesn't mean that you have the hardware you can or want to play a certain game on.

there is a hack that lets you play Story mode in co-op splitscreen on Jet Force Gemini

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/711/

it is a little cumbersome to set up, and is NOT just a simple patch tho

ps: i love this list, maybe co-op centered hacks should have their own searchable category, (not just "improvement")

This may not meet your criteria, since it expands upon the multiplayer capabilities already present in the game rather than adding more players: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/414/

I've considered making a four-player Tournament Mode hack but have other projects that I'd like to finish first.

Nah, people have the rights to enjoy Final Fight in their favorite platform. It doesn't matter if it is from 30 years ago, or why would translations even exist? People should just learn japanese and new languages, under that mindset.

Besides, the SNES 2 player hack was done already (by two different programmers at almost the same time, no less), it is not finished yet. There is also the Final Fight 3 players hack for the arcade board.

Anybody know how to run "Super Mario Bros. - Two Players Hack" on Nes classic mini?
Xdelta is not working... but hacks of the hack like "Super Princess Sis - Two Drunk Princess (Two Players Hack)" works fine cause its .ips.
Same thing with "DuckTales 2 - Two Players Hack"
Thanks!

My point, that maybe got lost somewhat, is that if you want to play Final Fight with two players, the arcade and Sega CD versions are sitting there and are both arguably better than the SNES in every other respect, too. Your comparison with translations isn't entirely accurate: if a game was localised from Japanese to English, I would very much rank that as a low priority. It's not a case of saying "why would translations exist", it's a case that if you're going to go to the huge effort to translate a game, maybe do one that hasn't already been translated. Therefore, if you're going to make an effort to hack a two-player mod, maybe do one that doesn't already have an even better version available on two different platforms (and yes, a SNES classic is still an emulator, so the 'original hardware' argument doesn't work either).

Anyway, the three-player arcade mod IS a great idea, since that's unique. Honestly, people can hack whatever the hell they want, there's no need to get annoyed about my opinion. :D

Well... kinda. It's not really a hack and it's not really two player. But it's a lua script that allows two players to share inventory.

So the closest thing would be this: https://mcclure.github.io/emu-coop/ (https://mcclure.github.io/emu-coop/)

If they are any good (and I can find them) they could count.

Anyways, anyone know a good emulator for 4-player NES games?
I would like to stream 4player hacks using PARSEC but I can not get any emulator to work properly. Or is there another way to play 4 players online?

Any ideas?

Hello, can anyone help me find this Ocarina of time local multiplayer hack?

Its called Ocarina of Time 4 Swords.

When I google, all I see is 4 Swords Arena Edition, which makes the camera angle overhead, I have no interest in that.

Here's video of the game:

Hello there, I've been trying Zelda II - Adventure of Link 2 player co op.

Whenever there's enemies on screen, the game slows down incredibly. I've seen people on Youtube play it without slowdown. Other games and NES ROMs have no slowdown at all. Any tips?

OS: Windows 10
RAM: 16 GB RAM
CPU: Intel Core i7-7700k CPU @ 4.20 GHz

Tried Retroarch with NEStopia Core

I'd love a 2 players hack but for Batman Returns... on NES. The crazy thing is the game seems to be heavily based on TMNT3, by that I mean it seems obvious to me they looked at how things were done in TMNT3 for heavy "inspiration" and faster dev time; and TMNT3 does have a 2 player mode.

Did you try overclocking? Like NesDraug said Mesen should be able to do that, so should FCEUX. For instance in FCEUX go to config->timing, click on Overclocking and set both setting to 50 or so. Notice that it says "old PPU" only, some games do not support this overclocking, you'll notice if you see graphical issues. The only games I'd had issues with so far were Natsume games.

It reminded me an old wish of mine...
I would love to play 2 player coop Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage with Spiderman and Venom the way it should have been. This game is a lot better (in every way, graphics and gameplay) than Separation Anxiety but lacks multiplayer.

Do it for Sega Mega Drive Genesis and SNES. No console wars please =)

I don't know if this fits here, maybe better than the other ideas thread as it is multiplayer related...

I would love to see a hack of these Sega Genesis Mega Drive J-Cart games to work with Multitaps like Team Player and the EA 4 Way Play.
This way we could play these backup games in console with Everdrive + this adapter without needing to use these Sealed J-Cart rareties.

I've received answers from the hacker, if anyone is interested.

"Shatterhand" hack was finished but couldn't get him to send me, I can guess why - but won't speculate.
Final Fight one is scrapped/abandoned (for reasons he explained to me).
No other coop hacks are planned.

Hello, I registered here just to comment. First of all, thank you for the post, multiplayer hacks are incredible and allows a hole new experience.

I think it would be nice to include "Super Mario Bros CO OP Christmas Edition" (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5556) and the addendum made by Cyneprepou4uk for the BattleCity 4 Players Hack (the original hack allows to play with only 3 or 4 players and, since it added some features and some stages, it would be nice to be able to play it with 1 or 2 players as well; this addendum made it possible; link: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4658).

I want to point out too that Chip and Dale 2, Battletoads and Battletoads & Double Dragon (all of them made by the same person, NakeuD2007) are "demo" hacks (Battletoads hack, for example, only allows to play 6 of the 13 levels in 3-4 players and Chip and Dale 2 hack only allows to play the first 3 stages in 3-8 players). As far as i understand from the author original post (http://www.emu-land.net/forum/index.php?topic=77237.0; it is in russian), to get access to the full hacks, with all the levels, you need to donate 15 USD to his patreon. I am pointing this because it was not clear to me that the uploaded versions in romhacking was "demo" and maybe other people could get confused as well; maybe it would be nice to add that information to the original post. Nevertheless, NakeuD2007 got really good skills and the demo hacks i tested with my friends (Battletoads and Chip and Dale 2) are really impressive.

Sorry for possible misspelling mistakes; english is not my first language.

a crazy idea mine is 2 players for BATMAN RETURNS SNES!!! ;D

First it would probably need an SA-1 hack so it has more processing power. The game can only do 3 enemies on screen at a time.

Maybe an MSU hack if that would offload more processing power from the CPU (not sure how it works).

More moves would be nice too. Maybe switch batman sprites to justice league fighting game sprites, or scale and modify  them to combine w/ Batman Returns sprites.

That game would be where you would get player 2 characters from most likely, this game has huge sprites compared to the other batman games

I realized that there's a newer version of the Super Mario World 2 player Co-Op.
The version released in 2014 is buggy and Luigi falls through some of the platforms.

The developer has released the source code and I was able to build the new and improved version using Asar.

Super Mario World - Two Player Co-Op (SNES)
https://github.com/rhelmot/smw-coop (source code to the above hack with less bugs) ((requires asar to build))

- Go to the green code button on the github site and download zip
- unzip the smw-coop-master.zip
- Place a clean rom of Super Mario World.smc in the same folder
- Download asar https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/964/
- Opened up asar.exe
- Drag and drop co-op.asm into the asar terminal
- Enter
- Drag and drop Super Mario World.smc into the asar terminal
- Enter
- Go to the folder and rename Super Mario World.smc into Super Mario World Co-Op.smc
- Play

Yeah, the hack author is a Spanish speaker so he made it in Spanish. All the text is just the same as in regular Mario World as far as I can tell (except for all the after castle parts referring to Big Boos instead of Koopalings), so translation itself shouldn't be a problem. Sounds like there are other issues with it from your post, though. I unfortunately don't have the skills to help, but an English version would be appreciated if it happens, especially if it's for the Mario Maker 2 Luigi version!

Yes, Bluto :) my mistake.

The hack still needs work, but it's a nice idea and sort of a fun already.
I was trying to think of more such "1 on 1" player vs NPC nes game that can use same type of hack.

Or different types of coop hacks, would be nice to have 2 player Pacman or Arkanoid, like they did on SNES.
Even game like Yie Ar Kung Fu (somehow always read it Air Kung Fu)- would be really great for 2 players!

There's a lot of sprites on the screen but I guess it will be possible if you port it to a different mapper.

But if you want Two Player Galaga I suggest the arcade remake:

But I have only begun to understand assembly and although I've made some hacks I'm still very much dependent on more experienced hackers for help.

The NES used a modified 6502 processor and most games were written in Assembly.
If the source code is available and you understand the programming language you will be able to work miracles.

A lot of the NES games have been disassembled by the likes of Cyneprepou4uk and are available on github.

Well, obviously many games could use such hack, can make a wishlist of my own (from platformers megaman, kickmaster, ninja gaiden, castlevania, whatever, and to even simpler games like pacman or defender II or road fighter or...or...)
We have no lack of wishlists, we do need more such hacks :)

You'll get there eventually, keep it up, wish you all the best (and if there is anything I can help...)

Russians especially seem to be good at this, one is famous here for his coop hacks, now this one for dissassembly - and he seems to have good youtube channel with all the tips and tricks, it's good I'm native russian speaker, heh :)
Will look into this and who knows...

Well, I always thought Ice Climber Mario (2P and 4P) where not done...carefully enough so decided to do my thing at romfixing :)

1. Made elevators to look like actual Super Mario elevators - only in snowy version.
2. Made slippery platofroms to look like actual frozen platforms from Mario Bros.
3. Made much better crab-hit animation.

Don't know how to do those things in "patch" versions, so just roms for now for my own fun, my big pixel art experience comes in handy :)
Might do more improvements, who knows, but it's already much more fun to play.

Have to say editing roms is much fun. Before only made my version of western-pieces russian Xiangqi (chinese chess) though never published.

Added paratrooper (looks good in real game, hard to make a photo properly)

Hey DoomJedi! Just to let you know man, you can easily generate a .ips (common hack format) using "Lunar IPS" from the same fella who made Lunar Magic. All you do is compare a "clean" unedited rom to your hacked rom, and Lunar IPS automatically generates the file. It can then be used to apply that same patch to any clean rom of the same game, so long as things like CRC32 hash match up of course.

Thanks, just tried it, you can try it to (this is to patch the coop 2P and 4P ice climber mario versions, not the original ice climber rom).
Gimme some feedback (and backup first) :) Who knows, might motivate me with more edits now that I know how to make ips patches.

I sure wish someone could make a 2-player hack of Predator 2 on the Genesis.

I would love to see someone hack Super Tennis and unlock 4 player doubles. You can only get 2 vs computer. Or 1 and computer vs 2 and computer. Why that was never done in the first place  I'll never know.

Because the 4 player peripheral didn't exist when it came out.
