It's something that could easily be fixed in a new revision of the hardware, I reckon.

I wonder if someone's already found an ultimate 3DS exploit, and instead of releasing it immediately, they're quietly biding their time until Nintendo loses interest in releasing further firmware updates?

Not exactly. Most, if not all, holes in it requires additional hardware unless you never updated the firmware.

It's called boot9strap (it can't be removed with a firmware update). It's been around a while.
Additionally, it can be installed on any system, regardless of future firmware updates, so long as you own a compatible R4 card and a magnet.

This recent Switch reveal reminds me of the above exploits...only now you simply need a piece of wire to put the system in perpetual checkmate.

is R4i3D compatible with Boot9Strap? I don't know but I'm 99% certain 'cause I'm unlucky that it isn't.
