Title: S.M.B. Remodeler- TRANSLATORS AND PROGRAMMERS WANTED.
Post by: Eden.GT on April 28, 2017, 12:34:52 am
A few questions to get this introduced:

What is this tool?
This tool is used for changing hundreds of Mario, enemy, score, palette, etc. settings in the game, Super Mario Bros. It is made by Kernel Software. You can even make IPS patches and change addresses with it, and so on.

I never faced this tool before!
Even though this tool is widely popular with Japanese hackers, it is almost unheard of with the Western hacking scene.

Pictures/screenshots please?

What exact help do I need, and what has been done:
I need help translating every single thing in the tool, other than the 9th button and the toolbars (Not including the figurations) which I translated with little Japanese knowledge, and Google Translate (Don't use this.) smbr.hlp is also optional to be translated.

Once the translations and everything are written down in a text document, I need programmers to set the translation into the tool itself. A guy named Hikkomori says he would manage it, but unfortunately, he doesn't have much free time to do it. Therefore I need some other programmers who have the time, and to change the file in Unicode. I also need them to alter this, to add in who translated and programmed the tool, and to write English or something like that under the large text:

People who will be given credit (More will be added in once they have contributed in the translation:
•Sky Yoshi (He stopped working on it, because it's taking him far too long to translate it, and our friendship broke up so he doesn't want to work with me anymore. I will still give him credit for him translating the first tab of the 3rd button, the readme file and half of the history.txt file.)
•Hikkomori (Will not be added?)

Downloads for the tools:
SMBR Ver2.23: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/269181521879891971/269225085477322764/smbr223.zip

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/300045696835256320/307362847191465987/smbr_english.exe
This is partly translated by Dcahrakos. Only one button and a few other things are translated, but the translations are rather unreliable and somewhat inaccurate. Please note that since it's using an older version, there are fewer options. For interest, here's what it looks like:

Please send me the private messages when the translations are done, and I will test the tool before I decide to release it publicly.

This is a great tool. I hope someone has the time to translate this. This is going to do a lot for SMB hackers everywhere.

I need them very badly!
And thanks for bumping the thread, because otherwise I might have to bump the thread on my own and get into trouble.

You're in. But how good is your Japanese, exactly?

So what, exactly, is your role in the project going to be?

Does that really matter - it's not like people are lining up to do this for you...

(No need to thank me for the bump)

I can imagine a lot of this text translation could be translated with Google (handwriting recognition to detect kanji, since it can tell you readings, or at least a reading you can paste into an IME to get the kanji to look up in... Although if you can edit the text in the program, you can probably just rip it from there, not needing to know reading.), a dictionary to look up words and a fair amount of testing for sensibility in the translations.
And some knowledge in Japanese Mario terminology but I'm sure there's plenty of Mario Wikis with that info.
I know for most stuff that is obviously horrible but this isn't something with story or character development. It's a UTILITY, can be fine with something utilitarian.

I actually had a small think about it. Other than the 9th button translation, I think I probably will be the director of this project.

Does that really matter - it's not like people are lining up to do this for you...

Some people may be experienced in the language, while others only know part of it. So there might be some stuff which is too difficult for them to translate it...

I know what are you talking about, in this case. However, since this tool contains quite a bit of text in it, and while I'm occupied with other projects, I figured I need other people to help me, too.

Meanwhile, I decide to open up the download links again. Won't be a selfish jerk next time.

so basically you want to take credit from the people who actually did work?

No! Of course I'm giving credit to the people who have contributed to helping in this tool.

another older one is resource hacker.

In this scene we see "Director" or "Project Manager" like the kid in school in a class project that doesn't do any of the work but still gets the equal grade (or in this case, credit) for the other members' effort. I'll admit I was that kid and as an adult I look back and feel shame for it.
I think "website maintainer" is also not considered a significant enough sole contribution. It would have to be a seriously impressive. Like better than something I'd make (which is like an hour in FrontPage) or whatever predesigned website package they use these days.

Sorry but to be seen as an equal member you're going to have to do more than translate "the 9th button". I'm not certain what that means but I assume you mean you can read パレット is "Palette". (that is katakana text, and being able to read that, and the hiragana/katankana chart is just the first step anybody goes through when they want to translate a Japanese game)

Thanks. I would see whether or not it is freeware.

I understand. As an adolescent, there are some things which I can agree on, while there are still some things which adults do which I don't like. I would follow what you will say, as for the sake of myself.

The 9th button was the easiest one to translate; and with a bit of clue there. But yeah, I agree with what you are saying. Not like people are forced to do a certain thing they don't like.

Most of the resources and the main executable are packed; you'll need to use something like UPX before you can touch it with a resource editor.

Will this do?  Didn't put in too much effort but should get the job done.

Also fixed some focus issues with hotkeys along the way (not all had a focus or went to the right fields).  Didn't do the help file since it would need to be decompiled, translated, then recompiled into a different format to work out-of-the-box with any Windows Vista on up--presuming the help topic linking works the same in the first place.

Neat that there's features to use Luigi's physics from the sequel ;*)

Right click > Save Link As.
Edit: The file size is there, but the zipped file itself is damaged. Looks like it's saved as a html file.

Will this do?  Didn't put in too much effort but should get the job done.
While the link itself is damaged and I haven't touched with the project since a few months ago, thank you very much for doing this. Just remember to reupload it, please.

The dropbox account was closed inexplicably with no notice.  No idea how long before this link will disappear.

Found a one minor translation error and another tiny bit that's untranslated; otherwise, it's perfect. I'll see if I can do this myself.

What is untranslated?
Bugs can't be fixed unless you specify where they are.

Right, the untranslated part that I noticed is when you made your changes from Basic Block/ Staircase properties, next to the button after you press "OK" will appear 変更有り, meaning "Changed". I could not find this line.

In the about section, the names are unchanged. Here's the list (Some unknown names are not translated. Leave it as it is) :
Code: [Select]
YY
SAT
An analysis text collaborator
hikoo
ぎゃらん
マリの素,
Nemu^~`
Sigma
毬男風呂
βetaWorld
Mario?
Ultimessiah
Tenshifan
Venus
YudaiDhun
MHS
Other people
Kernel

While I was able to locate this string, it's in a confusing hex form. I changed one number and the whole part will display an error upon opening. Post the line and what I should type in once you found them.

I also did some final polishing in your translations. Should look fine now.

That string (those strings, since more than one copy of them) was in an external bank, missed it.  Should also correct something in the IPS tools, though not terribly sure how to trigger that.  Also made a minor change so it's easier to run in Wine.
http://www.bwass.org/bucket/smbr-e-1.zip

Since you never specified any translation errors nothing else was changed.

Names are best left alone, especially if you don't do all of them.  You won't be able to track the person down even from a (potentially) correct reading.  If you did try to, the "confusing hex format" is shift JIS.  All of these can be found in TFORMABOUT.  The memory corruption is probably because you're trying to hex edit a compressed executable.
