Title: My Captain Rainbow Translation Project for Wii
Post by: MarkAss on October 06, 2016, 10:06:45 pm
UPDATE - August 1, 2017

I am going to put this project into an easy to read website.
I will still post updates here, but this looks a little prettier and easier to read.

https://markassprojects.wordpress.com
-----------------------------------------
I would like to report my findings while attempting a translation of Captain Rainbow for the Wii.

Sneek Peek Gameplay Preview (low quality, sorry)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxxq0FORBLo

-----------------------------
-----------------------------

So as for translating the game, that is already completed and well documented at
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-9JHoHYsgNE8BsjAiUQljhtNHeAh0XZP69n2cmK8jGY/edit?usp=sharing

Thank you Kirameki Translations for all your hard work!
https://plus.google.com/107583111615063971442

It even tells you what files the text is in. All text in in a folder called "bin" and have .bin extension.

The pointers seem fairly simple, I have already completed the opening video sequence (stage28.bin")

- UPDATE - October 28, 2016 - globals.bin is almost complete. And I have also learned how to create variables in global.bin and pass them over to the stage file. Now if there is difficult text to move, I can create the text in globals.bin and use it, as long as the text is >= 4 bytes {needed to call variable}

I am now working on finding missed japanese from translation and correcting.
Whole game is at about 95% done

Also, I downloaded the Captain Rainbow theme song for the start of the game, that was English translated from YouTube, and replaced the original "title.thp" with that one. (Using https://sites.google.com/site/wiiflowiki4/trailers)

I've been tinkering with this one too some time ago (more curiosity than anything else), and I had a chunk of Stage01.bin and globals translated, and also the introduction, but I'm not very good with pointers and some sentences or names were too large to fit so I had to change them a little, which made me doubt if I should continue...

For example, there's an item named "perfume of sweat, tears and blood" which obviously doesn't fit in the original allowed space, so I tried to give it a silly name like real life perfumes have, and I went with "Souffragance", which is the combination of Souffrance (Suffering in french) and fragance. Even if I think it's an "at least okay" way to "localize" that, there's also the point that it's not exactly the same as the japanese name...

And at the same time, I also doubted if the translated lines provided by Kirameki should be insterted as they are, or they should be cleaned.

But I didn't want to ask here because, for one, it was just an experiment and I didn't want to give hopes when I don't even know if I could finish it, two, translations seem to be quite subjective theme, and three, the more I was advancing, the more I was asking myself if my subpar skills would provide a good translation... Or at least an okay one so others could enjoy the game.

I have around 1.300 lines of text (going by Kirameki's google doc) from Stage01.bin edited (although some of them could be done better, as I improved a bit as I was advancing), which is around 10% of the file's text.

A screenshot from the beginning of the game:

I wish you all the luck.

The size of the text can be adjusted by creating a new text area at the bottom of the file.
Most pointers I am encountering are called by the previous text block. See screenshot;
https://goo.gl/photos/mGUh6LKXa6CxP5uUA

The first red code shows where the next text starts (The next red "24"hex or "$"ASCII)
The code after this shows the next text area.

Simply copy all the code starting at 048f to 04e3 (Not 04e4, since that is where the next text starts),
and paste it at the bottom of the file. Insert as much text as needed into the area where Japanese text is visible.
Keep in mind formatting codes used as well, like new line or text color (see side notes in screenshot)

Take the address from where the new code started (example: EDE2), and point the correct pointer to this new are (E2ED)
or if it is a large file (E2ED17) 17 being the first line of the address.

I am self taught, so forgive me if this explanation is not quite clear.

====================================================================================

Also, I have been cleaning up grammar and rephrasing bad English in the Kirameki translation.

Back to work for now, thanks for replies.

October 09, 2016, 05:54:28 pm - (Auto Merged - Double Posts are not allowed before 7 days.)
Adding this code around words will change the text color.

Sky blue color text start -    11 00 00 44 4C 64
Sky blue color text End   -    11 01 00 00 00 00

{} = hex code
Example:  black words black words {11 00 00 44 4C 64} Blue words{11 01 00 00 00 00} black words

Changing the 3rd, 4th and 5th bytes change the color.  ( 11 00 00 44 4C 64 )
Use HTML colors to choose.

GLOBALS.BIN - Solved

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
YouTube video of changing text pointers in globals.bin
https://youtu.be/Ezdf8MUA9UU
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Find text to edit.
Take offset address
Subtract in HEX (Offset - 18)
Flip numbers (2:A1D2  =  D2A102)
Search for hex code
Change hex code to new offset address (don't forget -18)

https://goo.gl/photos/MujK421MThjojW5z9
https://goo.gl/photos/5ZBpGfZUUibKFMAq6

The rest of the "item pickup" code was elsewhere in globals.bin.
It has now been translated.

Hi there, just wanted to pop in and let you know we're rooting for you. I've been striving for a full translation, and its release, for some time, even going so far as purchasing a copy of the game when the previous team announced they had completed the translation (not the patch, however). I'm so excited someone has decided to carry the torch for this wonderful game.

Cheers!

I have completed the items list with item descriptions in globals.bin.
Full Item names and descriptions are coded in by moving pointer tables.

Some descriptions seemed long, and the formatting was hard to make stay on the image of paper shown in the game;

(This is not a long description screenshot.)
https://goo.gl/photos/BHtJ6sWcXAwEEuDR6

So I figured out how to change the attributes of the image in the "menu.brlyt" file
https://goo.gl/photos/Bi8VJq3eAbYcHV1c9

I will probably change the size of the image smaller when I format the larger descriptions the way I like them.

So globals.bin is about 90% done, if somebody knows how to type Japanese, please write the sentence shown in the screenshots above in a reply.
I just can't seem to find it in the code, or in the translation, and a copy and paste would be helpful.

Thanks friend. I did a full "find in files" search and found it in the main.dol file.
It looks like a lot of menu text is located here. Thanks for your help!

Hi, I'm from Kirameki, and all this looks awesome!

It is the best result I've seen until now, and it's awesome to hear about the thp conversion from the youtube video.
The most complex part of a patch has always been the stage01.bin, so I wish you the best of luck with it.

For who will fix the texts, there are several sentences that could be wrong depending on what things look like, or what actually happens on screen. For example that item 'shaped like a huge ear', now that I can see the image, doesn't look like a single huge ear but like a figure with huge ears, so maybe there was a mistake there. I'll have to check it out. Unfortunately we translated on text alone and japanese can be very very ambiguous without context sometimes. Once we get to test your patch, we'll try to help fix our mistakes as well. You can also point us out anything that sounds off compared to what happens on screen, so that we can clear the doubt. I'll check this thread every now and then, in case we can be of help with something.

Can I use one of your screenshots to let everyone who's following us know about your project?
Title: Re: My Captain Rainbow Translation Project for Wii
Post by: MarkAss on November 03, 2016, 12:46:15 pm
Thank you for contacting me.

I can see why stage01 is the more complicated file, but I also figured out how to control variables in the globals.bin file and pass it over to stage01.bin, so the really hard parts, I can create in globals and insert a small code into the text portion of stage01 and no  text block needs to be moved.

You may absolutely use my screenshots, and my intention was to translate with your provided text, play the game, and change what didn't look right. This is only version 1.
I may also try to record my own intro song for the beginning in english, (I also sing), but that is a far away project.
Please feel free to pass on any information you find here.

If I had main menu translation, I just found that text in main.dol.

Thanks again for the contact.

Thank you for the input.
I kinda figured others would not want an altered intro, which is why I made it a far away project.
The patch will definitely be original video with sub-titles.

Thanks for the reply.

===============================================================================

Also, I have made some changes to the main.dol for some wii-remote messages;

I could complete the main menu if I could locate the text, but unfortunately, my Japanese writing/typing skills are horrible, and using OCR programs isn't working, probably background interfering.

If anyone wants to give assistance by typing Japanese found in the screenshots below, the start of the game would be complete, and I would be grateful.

My pleasure!

Truth is I always wanted to try Rom hacking, but never had a chance, (busy childhood.)
But now I would like to scratch it off my bucket list, I am going to see this project through to the end.

Right now I am simply replacing Japanese text with English text, so not a-lot to report, big chunk out of stage01 though.

Thank you all for your support!  ;)

Post by: MarkAss on November 21, 2016, 06:45:15 pm
Once again, loving the support for this project, I was afraid I was the only one who still remembered this game!

Made great progress with creating variables for easy text changing.
First I moved the pointing table for the variables used for character names in globals.bin

Once I moved this, I had ample room to expand the character names, and successfully added new values to the end of this existing table, which I am using for hard to modify text in stage__.bin files.

Here is one in action;
https://goo.gl/photos/FYCp9LMapbwdbZHd8    -->  Only code added to stage01.bin was '0C001C00'
So as long as the Japanese text is >= 4 bytes, I can add any length of string I want displayed.
This is extremely helpful when dealing with text that is attached to other options, like a 'Yes/No' choice in the game, or a big screen event like character actions or camera changes.

Here are some character name variables in action;
https://goo.gl/photos/FaFngQTw4VcF9o8v9
https://goo.gl/photos/jhA8HGQshfpnVkKM9
https://goo.gl/photos/QZTdnYKAznz4AJQE7
https://goo.gl/photos/sszZnUpHLvHgpYiW6
https://goo.gl/photos/StU8xH5rojReq18QA

And for anybody who caught the bad formatting in my "sneek peek" YouTube video, I am correcting as I go, don't get discouraged!
https://goo.gl/photos/mGtvpJgb4qHKZfSRA

Lastly for today, I have also come up with a way to patch ISO using Wiimms ISO Tools, ( http://wit.wiimm.de/ )
Combined with an IPS patcher, (I am trying several right now with good results, but I just can't pick one yet.)
================================================================================
Batch file tells Wiimms ISO Tools to extract files from ISO,
IPS patcher patches necessary files,
CMD replace some custom graphics files, (Example: English Startup Safety Screen .TPL )
Wiimms compiles data back into WII ISO.
CMD deletes temp files.
================================================================================

Hopefully Riivolution will work fine, but now I have a backup plan if something won't work with Riivolution patch.

Finally was able to register!  I can't say it as eloquently as some of the other posters but let me say *thank you* so much for working on the patch.  I just received my japanese import copy (mostly because of this thread) and am very excited to play this.

Just curious though - how far along are you now?  Have you been enjoying the game?

Also - would it be possible for you to upload your files somewhere from time to time?  Maybe on a monthly or bi-weekly basis?  We could help you catch any issues.

BTW from the screenshots, there are 4 instances of "you" that you might have missed changing to "ya" or "yer". I believe she has some sort of country girl accent?

You are absolutely right, and when you look through the translation from Kirameki, the character "Hikari" does mostly use "Ya" and "Yer", but some of the document uses "You", probably not caught in translation, and I've been mostly copying and pasting from their docs.
I will review Hikari's script and correct her accent.
Thank you for catching that.

Not over.
I got almost all of the scenery descriptions done, and did some work to Hikari's Main Shrine, which is located in another file that I can't remember because I'm on my phone.

Just had a crazy ice storm that knocked out power for three days. When it came back I couldn't get my laptop past boot menu. I got my files backed up, so I will be starting again soon as I replace/fix my laptop.

Just got a copy of a patch from Esperknight, and we are going to combine our work to bring this project closer to completion.
More info to follow since we are trying things out right now.

You guys keep asking to post work, well try this;
(The home menu freezes on Wii console, but works on Dolphin emulator. Known bug.)

Copy your game disk to ISO, ( imgburn),
Open xdeltaUI.exe from download link.
Select ISO and downloaded patch. (In patch folder)
Create new ISO, load in Backup loader of choice.

That's great to hear, hopefully I can make the patch smaller, but great to see it work on a wide scale.

I still have to translate some text from globals.bin so don't be surprised to see some Japanese.

This file was not included in the original translation document, so I have to get a little help with some translation.

Hi, all globals.bin texts should be here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-9JHoHYsgNE8BsjAiUQljhtNHeAh0XZP69n2cmK8jGY/edit#gid=280806510

Or is that some other text not included in here?
If it is, it would help to have the remaining lines listed in a document.

That's great to hear, hopefully I can make the patch smaller, but great to see it work on a wide scale.

I still have to translate some text from globals.bin so don't be surprised to see some Japanese.

This file was not included in the original translation document, so I have to get a little help with some translation.

Here is an example if anybody can translate japanese.

Hope you are enjoying, I corrected and inserted more text now and levels are working without issues.

Problem now is the script extractors are not extracting all text from globals.bin so I have to gameplay until I see untranslated text and correct it.

Dolphin emulator is not working right on my new laptop so screenshots are no longer an option, so I'm screenshoting with my camera and correcting after, but OCR programs don't like my camera resolution, so having help transcribing japanese helps me find text in game files. So thank you for help givin.

Once again, thanks for the help and support on this project.

Do you need full transcriptions of the text, or just enough distinct text to be able to search for it? I don't know a lot of Japanese, but I could do some of the grunt work if it's the latter.

Another option since OCR isn't really viable for this stuff is to use a handwriting engine.  It's especially handy for transcribing kanji.

If you happen to be using Windows every version since XP has had the tablet PC input panel, and in lieu of an actual tablet you can use the mouse to write instead.  For setup, you would go into keyboard/input settings and toggle on Japanese input support from the (long) list.  When the input panel is open you select a window for a target that uses text, select the language from the list, and draw.  Works best when you know the stroke order, and if you get close the toggle up above gives a list of what it thinks you were close to.  Hit enter or click away from the dialog to copy the text into whatever window it was targeting.  It works significantly better than Google's handwriting input (relying in large part on OCR), mostly because of the addition of stroke comparison.

Thank you very much!
I tried the Google handwriting, but didn't work good enough for me. Never thought of a built in Windows feature.

I tried a couple of characters in the MS tablet panel with very positive results, the character suggestions are a big help, so thanks again.

Finally got a full script dump of globals.bin!

Yeah! No more transcoding!

Just adding the already translated items from Team Kirameki to the new document, then it's translation time.

Thanks for all the help with previous transcoding.

If you read that page on the alternate website, it is not a Captain Rainbow patch in the zip file.

It is the builder I used for my project, in case anybody wanted to do their own Wii project, and need an idea on how to distribute it.

Sorry for the confusion.

Glad to dedicate my first post here in ROMHacking for this thread.

Anyway, my deepest thanks to everyone for making this english translation becoming close to reality and to completion to boot, to both Kirameki and Markass among others that kept reviving the project and move on forward with it. I remember being a massive fan of this game around 6 or more years back, and was quite excited to hear a fan translation was being developed for it.

Though lots have changed since and I lost interest on this project actually, I'm genuinely surprised it has been given so much support towards completion so far! I'm sure many people, including some famous Nintendo-Youtubers TheBitBlock  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So44IySYPws) would appreciate it. I even went to message Josh of BitBlock about this project, and hope he gets to hear about it - perhaps even showcase it incase you get the patch finished?

In anycase, my biggest wishes for luck towards this project's completion soon!

That's great, I'm glad people still follow this project like I did.
We all took a little vacation this summer, so forgive me for not posting sooner.

I just heard that the missing translation is more than 50% done, I should get it back pretty soon.

I have also figured out how to change text in the Map and character bios in Main.dol.

In Wii and Gamecube, Main.dol is the main Executable file. The pointers are very difficult to figure out, but main.dol puts all its values into memory.

I figured out a memory hack and patched the .dol with it to create new memory address with english, and point origonal memory address in japanese to the new address.

You will not need cheat manager, it is hard coded into the ISO.

===================================================================================================

Edit text in main.dol tutorial.
https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=24810

Also while playing around with Gecko codes I cheated to have all items.
Now I can make sure all the formatting and pointers are correct for names and descriptions.

Items Complete:

Map
https://goo.gl/photos/CHaqYPE4dENPJmup7

I also managed to switch the Home Button Menu to english with changing the memory code.
https://goo.gl/photos/aZ3Ar5YEHBgDTmGJ8

The patch now has no known bugs or glitiches. Just some missing translation.

Great job MarkAss.  I still can't get over how good it looks to see this game in English.  Maybe Kirameki can pick up my other two Japanese Wii games (Earth Seeker and Takt of Magic) hint-hint  ;)

So wait, there was text that wasn't translated in the original translation by Kirameki?  Glad to hear you're getting the rest of the translation.

Just curious, how far done do you think you are?  What's left?
Title: Re: My Captain Rainbow Translation Project for Wii
Post by: MarkAss on August 26, 2017, 05:15:19 pm
Send your hints to Kirameki, I have very basic knowledge of Japanese translation and am not technically affiliated with them to make suggestions happen any faster.

About 1000 lines of text are left to be translated to my knowledge.

There are also some text with 1 or 2 characters that were skipped by text dump.

Once I get the translation back, I will apply it and release a patcher for anyone willing to help test.
If any Japanese is found, I will correct it.

Only text remaining would be located in two files that are giving issues when dumping.
(Globals.bin and Main.dol)
But this missing translation should complete Globals.bin.

The game has yes/no questions, and runs on a time clock, so a character will say different things depending on the answer or time of day.
So testers would help cover possible scenarios I may not have noticed.

Thanks for your constant support superWiiFantatic.

Very excited to hear that the translation is nearing completion! I can't wait to see the hard work you and Kirameki put in come to fruition. I would otherwise love to help test, but I've been looking forward to a casual playthrough for so many years that I doubt I'd be able to report anything useful in a timely manner. If it's something I can do without rushing through, though, count me in.

Interesting to hear about your HOME Menu hack. It's always been in English for me when I play imports. Or am I missing something?

°w°
Takt of Magic was already under our hands, we translated (just from screen) the first 10 missions but then we had to stop for lack of time. I loved Lost Magic, and Takt was good too.
Earth Seeker, well, I never got around to even try it, but I really should because it's one of the games I'd like to see translated the most.
If only we had more free time.
Congrats if you worked on them!

Interesting to hear about your HOME Menu hack. It's always been in English for me when I play imports. Or am I missing something?

It depends on the consoles region I beleave.
It was English on Dolphin, but would show up Japanese on North American console.

Every Wii game has a HBM folder with all languages, depending on region of console.

I tried switching the file names so English file overwrote JAP, but it froze using USB loader on my Wii.
I tried a region patch on ISO, but it still froze on USB loader.

But pointing the memory address in Main.dol from JAP to ENG seems to work on both Dolphin and Console.

Here's my NTSC Wii playing JAWA〜マンモスとヒミツの石〜. The language setting in Gecko OS is "Default", and I set "Force NTSC" to off.

Is it possible that this hack is only necessary on Dolphin? For the record, my Wii is Letterbombed 4.3U, and I have the newest version of Gecko OS (1.9.3.1).

e: Oh, ok. Just tried launching my copy of Captain Rainbow via Riivolution instead, and the HOME menu's in Japanese. I was just missing that obvious detail. Sorry.

Even if there was a way to configure a backup loader to fix it, I like to be noob friendly.
The less steps to make the game work, the better.

While waiting for the remaining translation, I took a look at Giftpia for GameCube, which is like the prequel to Captain Rainbow.

I agree, and good job fixing the HOME menu in Riivolution. Gecko OS isn't a backup loader, though, it only plays retail games. I wonder if they accomplished changing the menu region in a similar way?

Wow, thank you! I intended to play through GiFTPiA just by consulting the Kirameki text translation, but if you and/or someone else actually created a patch, that would be super amazing!

Yes, but in italian. Google's translation from italian to english should be good enough tho.

All of this discussion reminds me of a while ago, when I would go to Kirameki and look, with silent optimism, upon the progression of Captain Rainbow, which I've always found to be one of the most interesting Wii games that I'll never get to play. On a side-note, I was one of those people who really did think that there was a little chance that Earth Seeker would be localized, because I really wanted to play it. I really would like to see it translated someday, too.

I want to thank you, Kirameki translators, for still working on this game. Congrats on the good news also !

Hi Markass,

I also registered to come say Hi and Thank You.

I run the blog "Lovedelic Life" https://lovedelicgames.wordpress.com/ (https://lovedelicgames.wordpress.com/) and its Twitter account - https://twitter.com/LovedelicLife (https://twitter.com/LovedelicLife) and while I haven't been able to keep them updated as mush as I'd like, I've been looking forward to this translation for a very long time!

I'm very keen to try out the patch as soon as possible, but I had one questions first...

- When Kirameki first started work on this it was intended that the patch could be loaded onto an SD card and then used with a legit copy of the game on an unmodified Wii. Is that the case now or is it likely to be in the future? Or will we need to use an emulator or hacked Wii to play?

Keep up the great work!

Ash

Thank you all for your support, it really gives this first time rom hacker the motivation to keep pushing forward.

To answer some questions;

LovedelicLife - I do not have the knowledge to create a Riivolution patch, sorry. My patch will modify an ISO to play on a modded Wii with backup loader, or Dolphin emulator.
You still need a modded Wii to use Riivolution anyway, and with programs like patchimage, the requirment for origonal disk doesn't apply anymore, so I didn't waste much time with it.

I tried downloading the .rar, though, and I'm having trouble extracting it. 7Zip says it cannot open it as an archive. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Someone else had an issue with rar file. So I may have to add zip to my drive as well, but this link worked for him.

enigmaxtreme - That looks freaking sweet! You have a very artistic talent! This would look sweet as a usb loader cover!

Will post update soon when new translation is finished.

I do not have the knowledge to create a Riivolution patch, sorry.

I can help make a Riivolution patch! I made one with the test translation that you provided. All it takes is a simple XML file telling Riivolution where to look for the files.

MarkAss, is there a way you could post about how you went about editing and injecting the .bin files for the script? I would love to continue my editing efforts; reading through some of Hikari's dialogue, you can tell where my edits stopped and the original translation began, haha! I definitely think it would take a long long while, so maybe it'd be best to release the translation as-is when it's ready, and I'll just edit on my free time and then make a release with the edited script.

Well, that's a relief! I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that a Riivolution patch was going to be available the entire time. I own a retail copy of the game, but my computer really struggles to run Dolphin.

Thank you so much! If it's really that simple, if you don't end up making one, I absolutely will.

You should all own a retail version of the game.
I do not condone pirated material.
Can't Riivolution load an alternate file from SD card?
You could patch ISO with the patch, put patched files on SD card with xml to point to new files for Riivolution.
I could edit the output of ISO builder to put files in appropriate folders for Riivolution.

That is really cool. Thanks for the link.

Been kinda busy this week, but I have more that half of the new translation inserted, (less than 500 lines remaining), which I have to manually input because they appear to not have tables or pointers like the rest of the game.

Kinda looks like any idea for side dialogue was thrown in globals.bin after main game was finished. It's kinda all over the place.

Unfortunately I have the same problem with the .rar file, I can't open it. The link to the .zip file doesn't work anymore. Could be possible to also add the .zip to the Google Drive directory?

I'd also love to see a Riivolution patch, i own a legit copy of the game and it would be awesome to just put it into the Wii and play it without having to create a ISO. In any case, the important thing is that a patch is out, it's already great!

Happy holidays MarkAss.  Thank you again for all your hard work on this patch.  I'm very excited to play Captain Rainbow in english in its full glory!

Just wanted to say, thank you MarkAss for this amazing patch, wanted to play this since I first saw on nintendo.jp's website which was 10 years ago now wow. I appreciate the time you put in this.

Unfotunately running into some trouble as far as actually patching the ISO goes. When it says drop the ISO in the folder then hit patch I do that; but then it gives me some weird tmp file and one time it gave me a CPN Rainbow ISO USA and JPN(both untranslated). If it isn't too much trouble would you or someone be able to properly tell me how to patch this? Using Dolphin on comp btw, not homebrew on wii or wii u.

Just wondering if there's any ETA on the final patch or if I should just use the current one. How playable is it currently anyway?

Nice work on this, been really looking forward to a translation for the game since it was first announced years ago.

Just wondering if anyone could help me installing the patch, as it doesn't seem to work for me. I've unzipped the CRPatch folder, then put the ISO inside as instructed by the .txt file and run "PATCH". At this point it'll do a bunch of stuff and create a new game.iso in the Data folder, but running that with Dolphin the game will still be untranslated. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Since I had spent the time figuring out how to write a Riivolution patch for a different game, I created one for this translation. Here is the most recent public build running on hardware:

Spoiler:

I need to go find some new batteries, apparently.

Everything appears to work fine except for the file selection screen, and the message that just popped up while typing this telling me that my wiimote is dead, which displays as mojibake (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojibake) (I am guessing this is because it's referencing a Japanese system font that isn't there, as this happens with some Japanese GameCube games on NA consoles). Is this some of the 5% of text that is not yet implemented? The HOME button menu is in Japanese, is that what "main.dol" patches? I had to leave that out because I don't know how to incorporate that fix into a Riivolution version, or if it is possible.

I would be happy to share my patch, with MarkAss's permission (and if they decide to make the raw files available, which Riivolution requires). Writing it was easy, but kind of tedious, so I guess it'd save them some time if nothing else.

e: It'd been so long, I had forgotten that mutaharu had offered to make the xml file before I did. I was just making one for myself and thought I'd share, I didn't intend to scoop them or nothin'.

ee: Turns out my xml file was needlessly overcomplicated and I got the patch working with the modified main.dol no problem. Awesome. I had a difficult time Googling this, so I guess for posterity, if you want to replace files in the DATA/sys/ folder, such as main.dol, all that is required in the patch section is:
Code: [Select]
<folder external="/[folder on sd card root]" recursive="false"/>
<folder external="/[folder on sd card root]" disc="/"/>
That's it.

The batch starts returning path not found errors when running the xdelta part of it. Extracted files seem to be fine, but then they can't be found, yet I see them in explorer.

So I got the script to run without errors after making a DATA folder inside the Extracted folder and copying the contents into said folder. However, the resulting file is still in Japanese when I try to run it.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/950769-captain-rainbow/76329452

I have no idea how to use Riivolution and it isn't set up on my Wii.

I also had issues with the batch file. I had to patch all of the files individually.

I'm very excited to try this translation! I was able to use a number of tools to extract all the files from my Captain Rainbow disc and patch the required files using MarkAss's 10/30/2017 patch download. I didn't run the batch file like some have tried, but instead did the individual steps myself and made a Riivolution patch. The patched files (so far) end up being under 100 MB, and you don't need to reassemble an ISO or anything - you just need an SD card, the patched files, a patch XML file, an original Captain Rainbow disc, and the Riivolution channel on your Wii (installed as a channel by itself or run via HBC)

I think I did everything right, and so far after playing for 30 minutes, most everything is in English, but I've run into a few things that haven't been translated. I understand the patch is not 100% done, so it'd be best to have as many people play-test the game as possible to help MarkAss in his work. For example, I just got the transformation belt, and here are a few things I noticed that weren't translated:

- A message that pops up when you try to Yo-yo attack the big rock on the starting beach (in front of the sealed door) or the big rock near where Little Mac can be seen in the distance.
- A few dialog boxes (maybe just "Yes/No" choices) when you get the transformation belt and are being taught how it works.
- A few words that Mappo says when you meet him after exiting the transformation belt cave.
- A bunch of messages that happens when your transformation meter starts running low for the first time and you're about to revert back to normal Nick (likely the explanation for how it works).

Also, I was kind of taken aback by the mixture of Hikari's dialog. The "Yer" and "Ya" and  "Ya'll" seemed out of place, and then when I met her inside the shrine at night, she was speaking in a Jamaiican-like accent, using words like, "Dis" instead of "This", and that was even more jarring. It's really strange... not sure if I like it, but it is playable. Thoughts?

UPDATE: if you need help using Riivolution to play this, please let me know. I may even post/upload a mini guide and my patch XML file, provided there is interest. Keep in mind you need the real Captain Rainbow disc to play it, which is what I recommend cause everyone should purchase the game and not resort to piracy, and because it's very easy to use and update the files later if any of the translation is updated.

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to get the patch to work for me, but I'm having issues I don't know how to troubleshoot. I've got a Captain Rainbow iso, which works just fine in both my USB Loader GX running on Wii and Dolphin emulator. I downloaded the V1_10_31_2017 files from MarkAss's wordpress/google drive. It appears official. I extract the files and find CRPatch file with a data file, patch.bat, and a text file that says put iso here. I put my clean iso in the same file with those 3 items, and i ran the .bat file. My CR iso disappears and a game.iso file appears in the data file. I put that iso into my wbfs converter and it comes out of that with the proper 6 digit code and my program recognizes it as CR. I slapped it on my Wii HDD, and booted up USB Loader GX. CR shows up in the menu and runs when I click start. The game boots in mostly Japanese, nearly unchanged, but there are some text errors. The initial cut scene remains unchanged. The patch also fails to show up when i take the same iso and run it in Dolphin. I restarted the entire process from scratch a second time, with the same results. What am I doing wrong? I'm a Mac user, booting into a Bootcamp partition of Windows 7 to do the file patching, so maybe there's a step I'm missing due to my inexperience with windows? IDK Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You can look at the two batch files (.bat) in the Patch Download to get an idea of what it's doing. This is from memory, but I think these are the steps it performs:

- Copies your ISO and renames it to something generic (that the other batch file uses)
- Uses wit to extract the contents of the ISO
- Uses xdelta to patch all the required files (this is a multi-step process, where the newly patched files have slightly different file names, the original non-patched files are deleted, and then the newly patched files are renamed to match the original file names and put in the proper place)
- Uses wit to create a new ISO

How you use the ISO after that I don't know. Since I use Riivolution with the original Captain Rainbow disc, I just need to extract the files from the ISO and patch the required files - I don't have to rebuild an ISO.

Curious to try the game out on Nintendont. I'm limited to the Wii U GamePad so there'd have to be no mandatory motion controls or Wiimote startup.

There's actually quite a bit of required motion control. Captain Rainbow's belt panel moves all need motion, as do many of the events for each of the islanders.

If you look at the command window as the script attempts to run, it displays status for everything it does, and the files provided have logic errors. The patch will get to the xdelta step and say the files aren't found, because they extracted to a different location than the xdelta program is told to look. I have been able to fix that, as described in my earlier post, but then I get more errors about file access permissions or such.

I'm very excited to try this translation! I can't use Riivolution, the optical drive in my Wii is dead. I exclusively load games from ISO off of USB Loader GX after ripping it with my PC. I have to have a working patched ISO. The problem is having to run xdelta manually on each file since the script is busted, and that is a huge list. I just need the batch file to be fixed so that it actually runs without error. I can't believe this wasn't found during testing and released in a state so broken that the patch process won't work as provided.

I've made a Riivolution patch for MarkAss's Captain Rainbow translation from 10/30/2017. I read some people were having trouble using his scripts, so I hope this helps get people playing the game! This does not use/require the Homebrew Channel.

What you need:

Steps to use:

NOTE: if you choose to install the Riivolution channel, you no longer need to use Letterbomb and can delete your Letterbomb private/ folder from the SD card. Also, although I have used Riivolution to play several games and have never had any issues, remember that anytime you use homebrew you are doing so at your own risk. I think Letterbomb as an exploit is pretty innocuous (the same for SmashStack, which I've also used), but I cannot speak for anything else.

Please let me know how things go, so I can edit my instructions to make things more clear if needed! And like MarkAss said, his translation is a work-in-progress, so while the game is fully playable (and beatable - I beat it just the other day), there is still a good bit of text still in Japanese.

I've made a Riivolution patch for MarkAss's Captain Rainbow translation from 10/30/2017. I read some people were having trouble using his scripts, so I hope this helps get people playing the game! This does not use/require the Homebrew Channel.

What you need:
  • An original Captain Rainbow Wii game disc (this method WILL NOT work with copies, etc.)
  • My Riivolution patch, downloadable here: https://gofile.io/?c=q1GMfH (https://gofile.io/?c=q1GMfH) (approx 75 MB zipped, just under 100 MB unzipped. it includes the latest version of Riivolution as boot.elf)
  • An SD card to use with your Wii
  • An exploit to run Riivolution - Letterbomb is the easiest for a Wii updated to version 4.3, and is used in my example steps below. Read about Letterbomb here: http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/LetterBomb (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/LetterBomb) (you do not need HackMii!)

Steps to use:
  • Unzip the contents of my Riivolution patch and copy them to the root of your SD card.
  • Replace the private/ folder from the patch contents (which is empty) with your Letterbomb private/ folder.
  • Insert the SD card into your Wii.
  • Power on your Wii and insert your Captain Rainbow disc.
  • Run Letterbomb (see instructions on the WiiBrew page linked above) to execute Riivolution.
  • When Riivolution runs, I recommend that you choose "Install" to install it as a channel on your Wii. You can uninstall it later at anytime.
  • The "Translation" option in Riivolution should default to "Enabled", and if so just click "Launch" to play the game.

Try using a different device to start the download. When I first tried to download it a few days ago with my computer I got the same problem you mentioned. But when I tried to download it with my tablet it worked. I don't know why.

Does anyone know if there is going to be any update on the translation in the future or is it going to stay like this? I only played about 1 1/2 hours with the patch and most of the game is translated so far, but there are still many dialogues that are still in japanese.

And big thanks to Kirameki and MarkAss for this project and to oc_jcs_fan for providing the riivolution patch.

Maybe your browser security settings are blocking it, as a possibility.
The entire reason that RHDN had to password-lock downloads for non-members is because of Google's faulty malware detection. :P

You're very welcome! I wasn't sure if anyone had tried my Riivolution patch since I hadn't seen any replies, but maybe my directions were sufficient after all?  :) I'm glad people are able to play the game, even if it's not a complete translation.

I wish I understood how to update the game files with updated translations, as I could easily re-word so much stuff in the same amount of screen space used currently for most text, Hikari's stuff especially. (I've watched the few Youtube videos MarkAss made about the process, but was totally lost) When you look at the Google doc with the translation you can tell the team who did it just did a straight translation as there's not much context. (still very grateful though!) It would take playing the game over and over while referencing and updating the translation to really do it 100%.

I also used your Riivolution patch, which is not only the first patch I've tried of this kind, but it's also the first time I heard of Riivolution. I love Riivolution's execution - it's the perfect way to play translations as it uses your actual game disc that you just pop in and play. It's completely awesome.

I haven't played the game very far yet, but what I've played is pretty awesome. I've been wanting to play this game in English since it was announced, and now I'm glad that I'm finally able to do so. :)

Thank you for your captain riivolution patch!

I use it on vWii through an exploit, no need to install anything, just swap the disc to play!

BTW.
with my super old sd card, the first time the game is freeze(I doubt because low reading speed of that sd card for the intro video)
but I just remove the title.thp line in your CaptRainbow.xml file, problem solved.

Thank you

Will this patch ever be completed?
It´s so sad to see this unfinished.
Did anyone have contact with MarkAss since 2017?

Is the game fully playable with this patch or will I miss a lot of funny quirks and lore?

I have no idea. MarkAss has gone quiet, at least in this thread.

The game is fully playable and beatable (I beat it myself), but there are still large parts with untranslated text. And of the translated text much of it could be re-worded for better reading/flow.

Hello, and sorry for bumping up like that, but if you're still interested in an "Earth Seeker" translation, I just created one you can try there :

I didn't realize my Riivolution patch got deleted (or expired, whatever happened). Here's a link for the new upload: https://gofile.io/?c=gIUKF3

I also updated my original post with the new upload link, which is where the instructions can be found: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=22813.msg356494#msg356494

There actually is a patch for the regular version? Would I bother you by asking if I could have it?

My Riivolution patch works with an original Captain Rainbow disc on an actual Wii. I just re-uploaded it. See my post above this one.

MarkAss is the original author of the project. I just took his stuff, did all the steps, and put them in an easier to use Riivolution patch :)

Bah... my new upload from early June got deleted too. Not sure what is happening, especially when my first upload stayed up for a year or two. Does any one know of a good anonymous upload site besides Gofile that would remain available?

Google Drive, Archive.org, 1fichier, Mega.nz

I think those are good alternatives.

Will the patch work on an iso to play on a softmodded Wii, without Riivolution?

I checked those alternatives out, but it seems they all need accounts created (I'd like to use an anonymous site). I'll keep looking.

Riivolution patches only work with the original disc. MarkAss posted his files and directions to make something that could become another type of patch (maybe to make you're own ISO with the swapped out translated files?), but I never tried that method and don't know how to do it.

That's understandable.

Thanks for the clarification, and the work you're doing :)

It would be swell to see patches for iso down the line. It's such a unique game that so few westerners have had the ability to enjoy.

Here's a new link, but I think it will only stay active for 14 days unless people keep downloading it. So get it now, and re-upload it, or whatever. I don't know how much I will keep uploading it.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/ai8fihaisoc1ynz/CR_Riiv_Patch_20171030.zip/file

Instructions here: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=22813.msg356494#msg356494 (requires original CR disc on an actual Wii console)

Thank you, very much appreciated =)

Don't have the disc yet, but it's nice to have the patch either way.

Hopefully a patch for the ISO will be available after a while :D

Hey! I wanted to know if anyone has been able to apply the patch on a Mac? I can't seem to make it work because I don't have a program to run the patch on my ISO. Thanks!

Hey! I wanted to know if anyone has been able to apply the patch on a Mac? I can't seem to make it work because I don't have a program to run the patch on my ISO. Thanks!

You should be able to do it on a Mac, albeit in a different way. MarkAss's original patch uses WIT to create a patched ISO. WIT can be gotten here: https://wit.wiimm.de/ (specifically https://wit.wiimm.de/download.html#os-mac) I never used the Mac version of WIT though - I did all my stuff on a Windows laptop.

Once you have WIT for Mac, I suggest downloading MarkAss's original patch (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwemMlNPg_8aZ1YxNU0xYzF0amM) and after unRARing the file, open PATCH.bat and EXTRACT.bat in TextEdit and become familiar with the steps they do, and then try to recreate them on your own. This requires some computer skills.

Aside from WIT and other ordinary command line stuff, the only other program PATCH.bat and EXTRACT.bat uses is xdelta.exe (a Windows program). I don't know what the Mac equivalent of xdelta.exe is, but my Riivolution patch (http://www.mediafire.com/file/ai8fihaisoc1ynz/CR_Riiv_Patch_20171030.zip/file) already has the files updated by xdelta, so you can just get them from there and skip needing xdelta altogether!

In short, these are the steps you would need to do:
- Use WIT to extract all the game files from a Captain Rainbow ISO (you're on your own for getting that)
- Replace the game files from the extract (the ones that need patching) with the files found in my Riivolution patch
- Use WIT to make a new ISO

I hope that helps!

So, didn´t try the patch yet, but the text file from https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwemMlNPg_8aZ1YxNU0xYzF0amM
says the following:
"
Version 1 - October 30, 2017
"

"
ISSUES REMAINING

- Instructions for mini games not translated
- Some Narrator text not translated
- Characters wandering around map, (not mission related), not translated
(These have been translated, next patch release will have these corrected.)
"

Doesn anyone have any contact with the original developers or can give any insight? Sounded like it shouldn´t be that hard to fully translate the game.

Yes. It's a crying shame no one has picked it up to finish it.
All this needs now is ISO patching compatibility and a finished translation.
Shouldn't be too hard, if someone with the know-how gave it a couple of weeks.

Let's see how it pans out.

I just don't think there's enough interest in the game to warrant more work on it, by anyone. I've done what I can to make it easier to play with my Riivolution version of the current patch, but someone would have to be a super fan to finish it all properly. The translation doc by Kirameki is out there on Google Drive, but having the know-how and patience to hex edit the right files to continue the work, that's the hard part (and of course testing). Making an ISO or Riivolution patch out of the finished files is trivial.

Also, the English text in-game is not as complete as the notes from the Oct 30, 2017 release would have you believe. There's still a lot to be translated in the game, especially the latter half, and lots to fix/improve of what's already there for clarity and display/line spacing.

I am 100%-ish this game with the patch, I also prefer the Riivolution form of  a patch, a thanks again here

What I am (still) hoping is someone patch that Giftopia for NGC  cause I think we really won%u2019t  going to get this kind of %u201Crole playing game%u201D.

Like this one, Chibi-Robo, or Giftopia ...

ISO / Riivolution patch: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/5603/

It's far from finished, the 95% claim isn't correct. Big portions of the game are unplayable for English speakers. It also doesn't work on real hardware by patching the iso/wbfs.
