Title: Does a Kaizo Mario Bros 2 (U) hack exist? Is one needed?
Post by: SMWAgent09AF on July 24, 2016, 02:52:05 pm
I just recently got some ideas for what might be some nice, hard levels for the SMB2 engine. Now that there are 2 stable editors that I know of, would it be necessary to make and release an intentionally hard Kaizo hack?

I was just wondering if somebody already got there first. I hardly think it would be necessary to make one if so.

Uhhh as far as I know there hasn't been one made.

But even if there has been one made, it would probably be an entertaining project for you to learn the ins and outs of the editor(s) with.

This is kind of a kaizo SBM2 hack here. I only got through a few levels.

Wow, that's pretty evil.

Looks pretty cool and IMO a "kaizo" SMB2 hack would be more interesting/fun than one for 1, 3 or SMW.

I suspect the same happened for Zelda II.

I wouldn't be surprised. Looking back, it sticks out among the other entries in the series like a sore thumb. At the time though, there were only two Zelda games and the premise was the same so I didn't think much about how different it was from the first. I loved both and played the hell out of them. It's also seems a little suspicious that Koji Kondo didn't do the music for it now that I think about it.

Well, I'll see what I can do.

Yeah ... I always thought that Super Mario Bros. 2 was the most inventive game in the series gameplay-wise. [....] As for how inventive the game is ... there's so many neat things you can do ... like the Sub-world, go inside pots, play as different characters that all play differently, play a chance game for lives, and use a neat pickup mechanic that is utilized in multiple ways. It feels so fresh!
Yes, I completely agree that this game is a very different take on games in the franchise, which makes it disappointing when you compare the number of SMB2 hacks to the number of SMW hacks. :(

One additional question: Is FCEUX an accurate enough emulator, or is Nestopia more accurate?

ADDENDUM:
[...] Ironically ... it wasn't originally a Mario game. [...] I don't really buy it [...]
The back-story of it all doesn't matter that much in the hacking world. It's still a fun game to play. Plus, it was enough of a Mario game to be rereleased in Asia as well as on the SNES, GBA (spawning a new series of revamps of old games), Wii/3DS VC, and also was generally well recived. I will say that it still is at least a moderately intriguing story, though; no offense. ;)

I'm pretty sure it was originally a game called "Doki Doki Panic!" that was based on a comic or manga, then later on Nintendo changed the characters and I think some of the enemies to Mario and the gang because the loved the idea of the game.

But like you said, it's a badass Mario game regardless how it came about.  :)

Well, I just began work on this project, and I will probably start a topic in the "Projects" forum. I have a screenshot of level 1-1 completed that I will post there.
