Title: What. are you playing?
Post by: resq on June 23, 2016, 03:49:03 pm
What. Do you even are you playing? Currently.

This is a thread to discuss games you are currently playing. If you even ever. (currently.)

PC games I currently have installed: Stalker MISERY 2.1, XRebirth, Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, Portal Stories Mel.

Dolphin Gamecube: F-Zero GX

Then there's my whole MAME library and my whole console game library which the only ones I'm playing currently are on NES hardware: Final Fantasy Epica, Bionic Commando (still haven't beaten it >< )

What play you? Even do you??

Right now I'm trying to spend more time on PS1 and PS2 games (after a long stretch of SNES). I recently started playing Persona 2 EP and tried out Tales of Destiny. Both seem pretty cool (It's whoop-ass time!) but I also need to finish Odin Sphere (replaying), Persona 4, Threads of Fate and Legend of Mana. If I can borrow it from my friend I'll also be giving Castlevania 64 another run.

Recently Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, GGXrd Revelator, Stardew Valley, and P3: FES. I have had this persona 3 game going on for more than a few years, but never finished this gem of a game. Only got 12 more days to go, with the aim of killing reaper. (80 hours playtime so far)

Yea I downloaded that too when I got into Oblivion. I had no idea I would like Oblivion as much as I did. And the mods? WOW! It's going to take me about 20 hours just to sort through and install all the mods I want to use.

I'm still playing the vanilla game for now. Lvl. 20-something Nord thief - the freedom and gameplay is amazing and there is just way too much stuff to do. Enchanted items and customizing your clothes with magical stuff is pretty fun too. I have a castle, two houses and a pirate cave LOL

Just got a Wii, and 8 NES games on the virtual console...

I believe yesterday I played Megaman and Metroid for a while.

Am I really the only one that plays XCom?   :P   I have to squee a bit, guys

XCom2 is one of my favorite all time games.  It's half TBS and half resource management, and is thematically awesome.

So like the first XCom is that you were an internationally sponsored force set up to fight off an alien invasion.  XCom2 starts under the assumption that you lost the first game, and now you're a rag-tag resistance force fighting off an alien occupation.

But the game is brutal.  It's like Dark Souls tier of punishing you for your mistakes.  Unlike Dark Souls, though, there are mechanics to make it easier if you want -- there's difficulty settings and it allows save scumming.

Random trailer to show the thematics/style:  https://youtu.be/ryOfZv0JjIg
Random let's play to show off TBS portion of gameplay:  https://youtu.be/6cjEDFEJbjo?t=6m20s

It's hard to really show off the resource management part of the game, as that's not something that interesting to watch.

Anyway yeah I highly recommend people check it out.

Even better, is that it is that way because so many people actually lost in the first game, that the devs decided to just carry on from the bad end instead.

Quote
"We realised that most players lost their initial playthrough of Enemy Unknown, and we realised there was an interesting and unique opportunity to have XCOM 2 begin with XCOM losing the invasion."

Anyway I haven't played XCOM extensively, I played a bit of a pirate copy of the original back in highschool, but lost pretty quickly and then went to play Radical Dreamers instead.

It makes sense.  The bad end leaves you with more of a setup to work with.  If they continued with the good ending of game 1... what would happen.  Would the aliens just try to invade again?  Pretty uninspired.

But yeah not a lot of games do that.  It's pretty awesome.  And it leads to a pretty great setting, which adds some neat gameplay mechanics.

The original original?  As in the DOS version with isometric graphics?  Or the reboot that came out just a few years back?

The original was also great, but had an incredibly steep learning curve, was riddled with bugs, and is pretty much completely overshadowed by the reboot.

Playing some Grand Kingdom (Vita). It's decent. Too much focus on online play I think. It feels like I have to participate in MP and/or grind generic generated missions to keep up with the level demands of the SP campaign. Once Zero Time Dilemma arrives I'll probably drop this one (I doubt I'll beat it before that).

Am I really the only one that plays XCom?

The original original, I think it was when the first promotions for Enemy Unknown were going up and I figured I would give the DOS original a try.

Throne of Darkness - which is basically an early Diablo II clone with a samurai theme. For some unfathomable reason it slipped under my radar back in the day (I'm a huge sucker for hack'n'slash games), and thus it's time to make up for the backlog. :D

I own both xcoms, and played the first and the expansion extensively (both pc and ps3), in addition to then playing a couple of failed Long War mod sessions. I got somewhat burned out, and by the time i got xcom2, i have had a hard time returning after the first digital guy showed up and devastated my squad.

I also played X-COM (that hyphen is the key) and Xenonauts somewhat. They are pretty good, but they are quite a different beast from XCOM 1 and 2. I havent tried Apocalypse, which was like the first proper... ummm.. sequel, which was what I thought would have been the inspiration for XCOM 2.

I have been meaning for a while to try it along Prince of Qin and some other games but havent done so due to a lack of digital distributors. How is it so far? Is it as action oriented as the diablo games or it has more rpg elements over there? The description always made me think of icewind dale.

I'd say it's basically a "Diablo meets Icewind Dale" kind of deal. It looks really similar to Diablo 2, and the leveling system is more akin to Diablo than to ID as well, but they implemented a party system (you have 4 party members pretty much at all times). There are 7 different classes specializing in different weapons/skills. The enemies swarm you like in Diablo, there are more of them than in ID for sure. I believe it is also much shorter than D2, but that's to be expected - need to finish it first to be sure, but I have the feeling that it's not going to be very long. I don't think there were any expansion packs made for that one either.

I'm in full 'retro mode' these days and am basically ignoring my PS3 and 360 in favor of emulated games via my PC and some stand alone PC offerings.

Currently playing via MAME:
1--Magic Sword
2--Pac Man family of games
3--Nintendo family of single screen games (i.e. Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Donkey Kong 3, Popeye, Original Mario Bros)

Via Kega Fusion (Sega 8 and 16 bit emulator)
1-- Shadow Dancer
2-- Golden Axe
3-- TMNT: Hyperstone Heist
4-- Ghouls n Ghosts
5-- NBA Jam

Via Snes9x
1-- Super Mario All Stars
2-- Donkey Kong Country
3-- Actraiser 2

Via Visual Boy Advance (Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Game Boy Advance)
1-- Double Dragon Advance
2-- Super Mario Advance (the one that plays a remix version of Super Mario USA)
3-- Gameboy versions of Batman the movie, Castlevania Adventure, and Tetris

Via Nestopia (NES emu)
1-- Contra, Super C and the very good rom hack found here, Revenge of Red Falcon
2-- Ghosts n Goblins
3-- Iron Tank
4-- Kung Fu

Via Magic Engine (TG16)
1-- Bomberman 93
2-- Supergrafx version of Ghouls n Ghosts
3-- Salamander

AS for non emulated games:
1-- Doom (via GZDoom) and some of the player mods floating around the internet
2-- Streets of Rage Remix. I have the final release version, V5.0, and it is just the ultimate in SOR action. So much so, it is hard to play the regular Genesis/MD versions again (unless someone comes up with cool hacks for some of those!)
3--Open BOR versions of beatem ups including fan versions of Final Fight, World Heroes (as a side scrolling brawler), and fan versions of Double Dragon.

Any and all of these games though, can change on a whim. I am known for binging on certain games or game types, then getting tired of them, then going on another binge of completely different types of games.
I suspect one of these days I will get back to playing my PS3 and 360 again...even though they have been overshadowed by PS4 and XBOne respectively...

MAME
I have some MAME games that are pretty interesting. They might be rare I downloaded them 15 years ago and I'm thinking that some of them might not be found online anymore but I'm not sure.

Armed Police Batrider
Daraku Tenshi - The Fallen Angels
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mysteria
Kabuki Klash - Far East of Eden
Last Blade
Last Blade 2
Marvel vs Capcom Clash of Super Heroes
Metamoquester
Sol Divide - The Sword of Darkness
X-Men vs Street Fighter
X-Men Children of the Atom

some others but not sure which ones might be rare

Yeah, while I didn't have that much of a problem with it before, having played through the Babylon campaign now I can say that I've been close to giving up on it a couple of times even though the pathfinding is supposedly better with the patch. Micro intensive or limited resources missions can be a pain. Still gonna try to beat the whole thing though.

Necromancy

I tried playing Gradius II today - game is frikkin hard! Gradius II is fun because options stack to level 5 but if you get killed in level 3 might as well turn the game off :banghead:

And found a Gradius 4 for MAME - that will be fun someday. Never even played that one.

Last night I streamed a bit on twitch, I played uh...Ghouls N' Ghosts until about 1/2 way through the 1st level (the puking on my bones thing the Pig Guys did kind of made me want to just say 'uffa'), then switched over to Revenge of Shinobi and made it to stage freaking 5, holy crap. I didn't feel like going on at that point, as nobody was watching anymore and 5-2...um...

...Well, screw Revenge of Shinobi Stage 5-2. Screw them. That's kind of all there is to it.

Interstate highway, every other blue car has a Red car that can and will hit you. and it hurts Joe Musashi about as much as getting hit by a car would hurt most people? And the stage is particularly stingy about health powerups, and falling off the stage is imminent a lot, and there are 2 layers, in front of the railing and behind it...and UUUUUGHHH KUNOICHI DRESSED AS NUNS KEEP CUTTING ME FUUUUUUUUUUUDGE

I don't care for that stage.

I'm playing Leather Goddesses of Phobos, and Tales of Vesperia
Im having a little trouble following Vesperia though, partially because I have the attention span of a small dog right now, and also because this is my fourth time starting the game over and I've basically memorized a good fourth of the game.

I picked up LGoP because I actually used to have a copy as a kid, but never had a machine that could run it, It's not as bad as I thought it would be and some of the lines are actually pretty funny, per ye olde Infocom standards.

I guess I'm also technically playing multiple versions of Mario 64 while working on the Shindou Translation thing, temporarily managed to make King Bob-Omb effectively immortal by mistake.

My brother played that game a lot. Feena is the lady character? ...A guy who wore all blue, some shorts and a backwards cap? Or was his cap forwards?

...Flint? His name was Flint?

I know it's a classic but I just never got around to playing it at all. What little I saw was very impressive, though.

I cleared the last ingame challenge on my list, the Ultra Hard challenge which is so because among a few things, no hearts drop which means you have to find alternate ways to heal.
I did it so by rerolling my run several times thanks to the power of the D Infinity.
Yeah, at this point the game get crazy like that. XD

Just got the giant humblebundle with 40+ games and immediately went to play stardew valley. Up to now it mostly feels like harvest moon on pc, while I actually prefer rune factory. It feels like more of the same to me right now, most mechanics have been done by harvest moon in almost exactly the same way (the fishing mini-game is nice though). I only put 2 hours into it, so let's see if the game has more to offer later down the line.

Trying to muscle my way through Blaster Master: Enemy Below. The first 7 bosses were easy, but I haven't been able to get past the last one.

Working on FFXV, but I keep taking breaks to mess around with VII and IX.

Update to my "What am I playing" list...

NES
Zelda 2 : Adventures of Link.......on the last palace and looking to put this one away soon.
Zelda 2: Shadow of Night........ a fine looking hack from RHDN which I got a running start on knowing I should be done with the above game soon.
Mega Man 2.... trying to beat the original once again, currently on Wily's Fortress.  i will probably move on to a Mega Man 2 hack afterwards.

SNES
Donkey Kong Country...still playing through this. My best when i beat it years ago was 93% compete rating...would like to best that.
Star Fox............... got in the mood for some space flight action, why not the original FX chip game by Nintendo!
Super Mario Kart (and some of the SMK hacks found here)

PSP
Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins....I know the entire GNG series is hard, but this version has to be the granddaddy of ballbusters...I am reduced to playing this on NOVICE for crying out loud.....  :D

PC
Doom still (GZ Doom is fucking awesome...especially when paired with a nice level mod and a monster randomizer such as the one from Scaliano666!)
Plants vs Zombies....never really paid much attention to this before, but it has become a bit addicting
Feeding Frenzy 2...same as above.

Going through Live-A-Live, it's been a long while since I've played this.  Currently I have all done but the Bakumatsu chapter.

I had forgotten completely just how genius this game is at points, like the Prehistoric one doing everything without text on a console with RPGs that relied on it heavily.  A lot of the time it's not the story but how you tell it that makes it great.

The shiken patsu bakumatsu hatsu datsu chapter??? Are you seeeeriuos??? How did you even manage--!

...Ahem, I've been playing Project II by my bro Vivify93 a lot...and FF6 in every version I can find it because I just 'Can't Get Enough'...it's late, and I want Mog, Umaro's gonna break me in two, There's an elixir by the doorway, if you push on the switch, you get two...

Oh that's right, I 100%'d Rondo of Blood English Version by Burnt Lasagna
I am really flighty lately, sorry

Haven't played any video games in 2 weeks now (not counting some smartphone gaming while sitting on the crapper :P). I had played two full rounds of Stellaris before and that was a bit too much and just burned me out.
I also finally found a table top gaming group and had first games of Infinity. And with Wh40k 8th edition being around the corner I spent most of my free time the last two weeks very motivatedly assembling and painting miniatures. It was a refreshing change of pace.

Starting this weekend I'll have two weeks vacation, still not sure what to play then / if anything. Maybe I'll just do a two weeks painting marathon (after which I'm probably burned out of that for half a year...)

Haven't settled on anything after Persona 5, most consistently playing Fire Emblem Awakening and Minecraft again.

I'm replaying the SBURBcraft map on Minecraft with the Falling Meteorites mod, Dimensional Doors, AdventureCraft, and Balkon's Weaponmod,
I'm also setting difficulty to hard (Like a Huss) and reset the map after every two deaths.

Lot of random stuff but mostly 7th Dragon III and New Vegas.

I'm playing Pixel Dungeon- It's rogue lite exploring a dungeon game.
And Kyofu no sekai or World of Horror. It's inspired by Junio Ito's horror manga. It's set in 198x, and elder gods are causing strange things to happen. You investigate and try to solve the case. it's really fun and odd.

I just picked up Friday the 13th: The Game.  I'm not usually an online-only player -- in fact I typically hate online play... plus this game is glitchy as hell, but it's surprisingly fun.

I've been playing a lot of Golden Axe Warrior for the Master System lately. I never really played that system before. GAW is a very good Zelda clone. In fact, I think it's actually a lot better than the original Zelda, which I am quite fond of.

This week I'm playing the first three Paper Mario games for the first time, Paper Mario 64 (Wii VC), TTYD(disc), Super Paper Mario(USBloaderGX).
Really enjoying the music in the first game so far, battles are okay, better characterization than most Mario games, I also especially love this version of Bowser.

Playing FFXII Zodiac Age on PS4.

The new soundtrack arrangement is very high quality. The voice overs are, however, definitely not. They still sound like they were recorded in a motel toilet and encoded to 32kbit/s mp3s. I wonder if they didn't have the untouched master recordings anymore or if they just didn't give a shit.

I've almost finished Surging Aura. Played it a long time ago in French, and now that my Japanese is good enough I decided to give it a go in the original language. It's alright, although the encounter rate could be lower. It also seems very short for a 16-bit RPG (I'm in the final area after only 5 h or so), but this could be either a bad thing or a good thing, depending on what you're looking for in JRPGs. The locations are rather small as well. Either way, I guess it's not too bad overall.

Resident Evil 6 New Game Plus. Replaying as Christopher. Already beat as Leon.
Sleeping Dogs. Great game although it looks like it's pretty short. Too bad they canceled SD2.
Megaman: Wily Wars. Already beat 1&2. Just need to beat Wily's Castle in part 3 to unlock a secret castle.

The latter, I'll wager.

I've been playing Megaman 1 a lot lately. It didn't really make much of an impact when it first came out (MM2 did though), but I've always enjoyed it. When I first played, I still recall that I chose Fire Man's stage. It wasn't easy but I eventually beat him. :D The good old days.

Spooniest,
first time I played MM2 I didn't realize the atomic fire could be charged up. Took me 5 or 6 times to play through Woodman's stage. For how much everyone claims that MM2 is easiest in the series I had some trouble at the end. I already depleted nearly all my weapons by the time I got to Wily so it was a bit frustrating. Though nothing as difficult as MM7. Had to redo the boss rush several times until I bought several energy tanks and weapon tanks from Auto.

Bubble Lead ('leed') was the only weapon that would work on him and not heal him instantly to full, yeah. What the actual F, MM2 team?

The last boss is an asshole too. If you don't save 4 e tanks you'll have a really tough time beating him until you develop some serious reflexes and pattern recognition reactions.

Hm, is today a FF7 day? Or do I want to go old school and work on Gurgu Volcano some more? Choices. :-\

Been playing the 3DS homebrew port of Meritous. I used to play this all the time on the PSP - the version I'm playing now is much more stable, and it doesn't feel like I'm murdering my handheld when I try to leave the game.

Was playing the same just last night, works much better than the Wii version I used to play as well, I think maybe the HUD status toggle is new too.

I'm very fond of Phantasia myself. I never have played Bravely Default either, though I've heard many good things about it.

After 30 bajillion years, I finally got a gamboy (pocket) for the first time. No backlight hah, you kids and your backlights

I got Super Marioland yesterday for it, and have been playing that, and kind of sucking at it.

Edit: Pics or it didn't happen:

Last night I was playing and got a stack error lol. I think it was because I had fought multiple big bosses within a short period of time.

Back when I had it on PSP, I never really got too far into it. I didn't know there were artiifacts until I started playing through on 3DS yesterday haha.

I actually finished it back then, best part is when
Spoiler:
Every enemy in the game starts zeroing in on your position at once
, I actually cleared every enemy from the map which isn't that hard when you reach max levels, but didn't get every room marked as explored, iirc there might have been an alt ending I missed because of that, thanks for the heads up about the bug too, I'll probably save every couple boss rooms just to be safe.

On top of everything else I'm now playing Katawa Shoujo and Infinite Undiscovery.

Katawa Shoujo is so much better than I was expecting too, I was lured in by the prospect of funny antics from paranoid lunatic Kenji, but stayed for the surprising character depth and moral quandaries.

Infinite Undiscovery is okay so far, definitely not made for an SD screen, can barely read anything thanks to tiny fonts, makes it kind of a bitch to know what I'm supposed to be doing, a problem it shares with the Dragon Age games.

I'm playing the Fire Emblem: Requiem fan hack right now. It's a lot of fun, like The Last Promise was. Not quite as much custom editing regarding the music and graphics as that one, but at least it seems a bit easier. The last boss in The Last Promise was almost impossible to beat, so I at least hope that Requiem is better balanced in regards to whoever or whatever the last boss will be.

After that, I'm looking forward to playing the Shadowrun trilogy (Returns, Dragonfall and Hong Kong). I hope they're as good as the SNES and Genesis titles were. Interesting note, the person who made this trilogy actually got donated funds from fans on Kickstarter. Turns out he actually was a fan of the two original Shadowrun games during the 90s, so that should be a good thing.

On another note, has anyone ever played the Risen and Gothic/Arcania series? If you're into open world gaming with non-linear gameplay and tons of options for customization, exploring and even the story branching into different paths, then I would definitely recommend that you try it out. I've had a lot of fun with it.

Nothing yet. But since I've bought a copy of Tales of Phantasia for the GBA second hand, I've been reading up on the localization issues. I've wondered why a event called a Kangaroo was a plot point.

I'm trying to figure out if I can run a ps1 version on my hacked PS Vita.

Sonic Mania and Radiant Historia, I'm really enjoying RH more than I thought I would and it has a pretty cool artstyle, hoping for cleaned up 3d backgrounds in the new version though.
