Probably not, though if I felt so inclined text hacking is the easiest form of hacking.

No. Their names are sacred and must be preserved by any and all means.

Would you guys change the names of the racers? Just asking.

That depends. Are you changing the character's graphics up to be something else, or are you sticking with the original cast?

If not, then I don't see the point, unless you like to pretend that Donkey Kong Jr is the normal Donkey Kong. Which I used to do when I was young haha.

Edit: Nevermind, just saw in your other thread that you're planning on changing up the characters, so yeah, go for it haha.

Title: Question about hacking Super Mario Kart
Post by: ZacheryTheHedgehog on March 30, 2016, 05:45:14 pm
Is there program to edit the music and text in the game? Cause im really wanting to do that for my SMK Hack
Title: Re: Question about hacking Super Mario Kart
Post by: dougeff on March 31, 2016, 02:24:25 am
As far as I know, there are no specific tools for SMK.

I thought I'd give this game a look, because lots of people are talking about it. Keep in mind, my expertise is in NES, not SNES. I looked at the entire ROM in YY-CHR, and didn't see any text graphics...must be compressed. So I opened it in SNES9x with Geiger's debug tools, and dumped the VRAM from the title screen, when some text was on it. Opened the dump in YY-CHR. I see the text. I made up a little table file (just a text file, with lines like this...)

21=X
22=Y
23=Z
24=?

And opened the ROM in Windhex, and opened my table file. I only saw a tiny bit of readable text at offset 1cb00...(see attached pic)

http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/s14ad19vv96i45c/smk.png

and changing these values only affected the Time Trial screen (where it says 'course select')

I looked closer at the Title Screen with the text on it...and the text is actually sprites. Maybe they are stored in some way that the letters are not actually next to each other in the ROM, since each sprite uses 4 bytes (I think). Anyway. This would take more time than I want to spend right now, but maybe you should ask someone who's already hacked this game.

As for music hacking...there is at least 1 maybe more music tracker designed to work with Nintendo SNES games, and might work. I know someone else here has changed the music in SMK.

I think this is the tracker...

Post by: ZacheryTheHedgehog on April 01, 2016, 04:29:15 pm
I've decided to start over my SMK hack and if you wanna help me I WILL feature you in the credits

AND I am taking track requests from either an F-zero game (Excluding X and GX) or a Mario Kart Game (Excluding 64 and 8 )

If you wanna request a track here is what you need to fill out:

Track name:
Game (Mario Kart or F-Zero):
Location (Pick one): Turtle Circuit, Sand Ocean, Ghost Forest, Fire Field, Red Canyon, White Land, Diamond Road

And I have kept the race roster:
Donatello - Mario
Leonardo - Luigi
Zelda - Peach
Zachery (me) - Yoshi
Raphael - Bowser
Eric - DKJR
Michealangelo - Koopa
Jayson - Toad

Currently done:
Sprites for Leo, Mikey, Raph and Donnie

Knight Cup:
1) Turtle Circuit 1 (recreation of peach circuit from MKSC) by my classmate Yusuf Ahmad
2) Red Canyon 1 (recreation of crater land loop circuit from FZMV)
3) White Land 1 (request needed)
4) Diamond Road 1 (recreation of silence open circuit from FZMV)
5) Fire Field 1 (I decided to keep that track) [Recreation of Blast Track 2 from F-Zero GP legend]

What a shame, you've spent so long working on it as well...

Seriously though, Super Mario Kart is a great game and people will be interested in helping you with it but you need to show that it is help you need and not just someone to do it all for you. Stick to one project thread, post what you have managed to do so far and what you are stuck with. As you progress people will gain interest and you'll get on a lot better than promising people a credit for doing all the work in a hack that is never going to materialise (which is what it looks like just now, prove me wrong ;) )
Title: Re: Question about hacking Super Mario Kart
Post by: dougeff on April 01, 2016, 08:50:19 pm
ZacheryTheHedgehog,

I know it might look like people aren't being helpful, but you need to understand that every few months a person pops up and talks alot about their great hack plans. Then, about a month or two later, we never hear from them again. So, people are reluctant to put much work into a project that is potentially doomed.

So, what we are really asking from you is more than some name changes. Show us some artwork (even if it's just concept art, or just some sketches on paper)...show us the new level designs. Show us another hack that you've successfully completed... even if it's just a graphic hack of Mario Bros. And, if the ideas are good, people will help.

I could make you a text editor tool, maybe, but given my current schedule, it wouldn't be done till like end of 2017. As you see, I was having trouble even locating the text in the ROM...it takes a lot of time to do a project like that. I'd have to locate the offset of every line of text in the game, and program a way to convert ASCII input to the game's text table, make sure it doesn't overflow, game test every line. So, you can see why someone would be reluctant to do all that.

Edit....
And when I say ask someone who knows, I mean PM them personally... these people have done the things you're asking about...

d4s - levels and music
ScouB-levels, text, graphics
Kempy-levels, graphics
Dirtbag-levels, graphics, music, text

I wish I knew how to edit the music. I promised myself I wouldn't start any new projects, so...no can do.

But, I can probably locate the text for you. Not today, though.

What did you want to do with the music, btw? Are you going to write new original songs? Remix the old? Port a song from a different game? Are you a musician?

Maybe tomorrow for the text.

For the music Most of it would be from F-Zero While the credits theme is the opening demo to Sonic Mega Collection.

Is that a .smc file? If so you can't post full rom files publicly like that. Post a patch instead and include the checksums for the correct rom to patch to. Also not trying to be a jerk by saying but can you just stick to the same one thread? You made two threads for the same project in personal projects and every time you ask a question for the same project it's a new thread. Like come on. This forum isn't only for you alone to spam your own single project continuously and overwhelmingly. If people are interested they'll post. Otherwise just wait 7 days so you can update the same single thread again and don't try to take over a community board. Geez.

That's no excuse for not becoming more informed first. Actually read the rules before you skip to the registration process. I haven't even started on my first hack yet but I still make the effort to know what the hell I'm doing and how things work around here. If you don't want to be called out on something then make a proactive effort to prevent yourself from doing it. Too many noob posts lately about how to even apply a patch to a rom. WTF. Anyway you might want to actually edit your post and remove the rom link before a mod does and makes a point of it to you instead of pretending that I didn't already point it out to you. Just saying.

Try again on making the patch.

This is the patch, viewed in a hex editor...

PATCHEOF

That is...every .ips patch starts with the letters PATCH and end with the letters EOF (end of file). You see. Nothing between them = no changes.

Also, on a side note, I can't seem to run SMK in Geiger's SNES9xw tool...well, it runs, but I can't run the race because it's buggy. Also, I'm not sure what text you're looking for. The GP results and podium look changed already to me (using a different emulator). I think I probably won't be able to change any other text, anyway, since I'm having technical difficulties with the tools I'm used to using.

I can run it in the regular SNES9xw, but it has no debugging tools. Not sure why I'm having problems with the Geiger version. I was also having trouble with Higan (BSNES).

ZSNES has no debugging tools either.

Can you provide a screenshot of text that needs changed?

I might be able to view the VRAM by looking at a savestate. or maybe doing a relative search in a hex editor. (As a means to find the text).

http://www.smwiki.net/wiki/Addmusic

I haven't used it, and it might be tricky to get it to work with the wrong game. While the music engines are probably compatible, the offset within the ROM is likely different. If by some miracle they posted the entire source code for the tool, it could probably be edited and recompiled to work with SMK.

More likely, the source is not available. In which case, it might be possible to A. Add the new song to SMW, then cut and paste it into SMK (with a hex editor).

Maybe.

I've spent the past few months altering the music in SMK, and find raw hex editing to be the most efficient method (at least for the uncompressed tunes).

For the compressed songs, I create a standalone .bin file of the new song (uncompressed), then use the Advanced Codec compression feature in Epic Edit to compress/insert it in-ROM.

That's... odd. How did you manage to do that?

Also, F-Zero uses a slightly different form of the N-SPC music format, so I'd expect at least some translation/transplantation issues.
Title: Re: Super Mario Kart Custom Text and Custom Music help
Post by: Dr. Floppy on April 28, 2016, 08:33:41 pm
I find this highly intriguing.

I'm still cutting my teeth on the conversion/compression process for SMK music. I've succeeded in replacing the first part of the Title Screen anthem, but my Choco Island replacement music somehow prevents the Pre-Race Fanfare (when the camera pans down the center of the racers, then spins 180º) from loading/executing properly. Then $[DF00-FEFF] region of SPC-RAM gets flooded with gibberish and everything dies.

Which trackform gets the theme from "Silence"?

Addendum

One thing you might want to consider re: the F-Zero songs is rearranging their channel layout. During active Mario Kart races, certain sound effects are played on specific channels, which may cut off or even silence certain parts of the BG music. My research has yielded thus:

Channel 4: Coin Collection, Start/Select, Hopping, Item Use.
Channel 6: Most environmental SFX (water, sliding, skidding, offroad).
Channel 7: Other racers' engines.
Channel 8: Your engine.

I've come to take as read that, at least for songs intended to play during active racing, Channels 4, 6 and 8 are off-limits and Channel 7 is to be used sparingly.

The can't hack metroid thing is a really... really.... REALLY old romhacking forum reference.  Like from the late 90s.  Man I'm old.

Anyway, after googling "Super Mario Kart music format", I found this link to the RHDN forums where someone provides general info, references a doc covering the compression, and links to documents describing the format.

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=14851.0

At the very least that's a starting point for OP.  But until he comes back with an actual question that can be answered and not just a vague "I can't do it" without even so much as telling us what he tried and/or had difficulties with -- that's about as much as I can do.

What if i told you that I DID TRY SOME THINGS and they failed me
I would say that's not very helpful to anyone.  May I suggest reading http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html ?

People will be much more likely to help you if you provide some indication that you're capable of accepting their advice.  What if someone takes the time to write about the THINGS YOU ALREADY TRIED, and just wastes his time and yours?  Why not write about the THINGS YOU TRIED, specifically, and why you think they failed?  Then people can start to suggest what you should have done differently.

What if i told you that I DID TRY SOME THINGS and they failed me

What things?

I'm not trying to pull more information out of you just to be a jerk.  I'm trying to do it because I need to know what I can do to possibly help.

The more information you give us, the more information we have when helping you.  If you don't give us any information... then what exactly do you expect us to do?  I've already linked to a relevant post that might help.  Did you look at it?  Did it help?  Was it too confusing?  Were the links bad?  Does it require use of a tool that isn't available any more?  Tell us what the problem is.

Unless you tell me what the problem you're having is... I can't help you overcome it.

This is all basic question asking skills.  If you walk onto a forum and say a generic statement like "I can't hack this game" you're not likely to get meaningful responses.  But if you give information about what you know, what you've tried, what you don't fully understand, etc -- it gives more insight into your situation.  Help us help you.

EDIT:  Jorpho kind of ninja'd me, but I'm posting mine anyway.

I tried smkmusic but it said that the side by side config was incorrect
Title: Re: I clearly can't do it
Post by: Disch on July 04, 2016, 10:33:22 pm
Is 'smkmusic' an editor?  I've tried googling it and can't find a link.

I looked at your post history and saw you posted in a recent thread in which someone linked you do this:  http://www.smwiki.net/wiki/Addmusic

Is this the tool you're referring to?  If so, which?  (there are 3 mentioned on that page)

PS:  I shouldn't have to find these links on my own.  Please make some effort into providing details and links so I don't have to guess at what I think you mean.

EDIT:

Let's put this more simply:

1)  Give me links to any tools you're using
2)  Tell me what you actually did with them to get the "side by side config" error message.  A step-by-step outline would be great
3)  Tell me anything else you tried

EDIT 2:

Here's a recent post I made on another forum where I was asking a question about their specific toolkit:
https://forums.wxwidgets.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=42342

Notice how I span 3 paragraphs telling them what I want, what I'm doing, what I tried, and finally asking if there's a different solution I can take.

Contrast that to your 1-sentence replies where you are vague and don't give any real info.

I don't mean to be an asshole about this -- but learning how to ask a question properly will do wonders for you.  ESPECIALLY in technical areas like ROM hacking.

I put in the this in the command prompt and got this
C:\mariokarthacking>smk -e Sand.txt.bin smk.smc 4
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is in
correct. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.e
xe tool for more detail.

KPE's link is to a program called "Epic Edit", which I've downloaded just now and run... and it appears to be a GUI program that does not need to be run via commandline.  Also there is nothing in the download that is called "smk"

So clearly this is not the program you are using.

EDIT:

Ah okay.... the tutorial document makes mention of this tool.  Alright I'll read this and get back to you.

Don't know anything about this editor, but the "side-by-side configuration" error makes me think it may have something to do with a missing/bad .NET installation.
Title: Re: I clearly can't do it

.NET INSTALLATION? what version is needed?
Title: Re: I clearly can't do it
Post by: Disch on July 05, 2016, 02:33:19 pm
I doubt it's .NET since I'm getting the same error and I'm on Win10 with what appears to be the latest version.

ZacheryTheHedgehog:  According to this tutorial document, running this smk tool is like step 20.  Did you do all the stuff it tells you to do before this?  Like 'prepping' your midi files, using tinymm to create mml files, etc?
Title: Re: I clearly can't do it

been there done that
Title: Re: I clearly can't do it
Post by: MegaManJuno on July 05, 2016, 02:45:07 pm
I don't know if it's the problem or not, but I don't think .NET 4.x is fully backwards compatible with all prior .NET runtime versions. For instance, I know you can't install .NET 1.1 on a Server 2008 or newer without hacks/workarounds, and we needed this to support a customer with an old web app when they updated their server from a 2003 one.

Just, typically, that's where I see the side-by-side errors crop up (.NET), so might be a starting point. /shrug
Title: Re: I clearly can't do it
Post by: Disch on July 05, 2016, 03:02:35 pm
Ah that's a good point.  Blech.  Alright I'll see if I can get this working on my end and then see if I can walk through Zachery what I did.

EDIT:  So a SO post suggested running ildasm on the exe to see what version of the CLR is used -- which I tried but apparently smk.exe does not have a CLR header, so it doesn't seem to be using .NET at all?  Maybe it's using an older C++ runtime instead?  Still digging.

EDIT 2:  Okay, so after doing a sxstrace, the log revealed this:

Code: [Select]
ERROR: Cannot resolve reference Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8".
ERROR: Activation Context generation failed.

So this looks to be because the smk build is using the DEBUG (blech blech never release debug builds!) runtime lib of Visual Studio 2008 -- and thus I presume would only work if you have VS2008 (or its runtimes) installed on your machine, which I currently don't.

I'm going to try getting them and if that solves the problem I'll post back here.

FINAL EDIT:

That's the problem.  You need the VC++ 2008 DEBUG runtimes.  These are not redistributable, so they're not available on MS's site like the non-debug runtimes are.  So unfortunately you just have to download the entire VC++2008

Download link here:  http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=7729279

After installing I get passed the side-by-side error and get a new error saying I need Lunar Compress ... but I'll assume you have Lunar Compress handy.... in which case it won't be a problem for you.

I cannot be able to but my own music into my Super Mario Kart Hack

What song(s) do you want to replace, and with what new material?

I'll get one curve ball out of the way now: music intended for racetracks should be limited to 4½ channels to avoid being interrupted by sound effects. (The ½ is Channel 7, which is used for AI racers' engine noise. Since that sound effect only plays when they're nearby, it can be used for non-essential instrument parts.)

FFS Zachery, ask a question.  Tell us what you want.

You said "this isn't what I want" and then posted a bunch of MML -- but you dont' say WHY it isn't what you want or even what the problem with it is.  You just expect us to read your mind.

I can't do another 6 posts of back-and-forth to try to pry out basic information from you.  If you're unwilling to put effort into telling us what the problem is, then I'm unwilling to put effort into solving it.  Maybe someone else can field this one.

ZacharyTheHedgehog can you please do me a favor and prove to me that you are a human being? Say something logical that a human would say. Tell me how you felt before you woke up last night or describe the texture of the nearest carpet or rug. Just tell me anything that makes perfect logical sense to human beings.

Go ahead. I'll wait.

Exactly why did you think starting a new thread was going to be useful?

If you want answers, start by answering the questions made in the thread you already started (http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,22221.0.html).

Ignore him Jorpho - he starts a thread every now and then but never makes any sense.

Wonder why King Mike lets this slide without banning him?

I'm not convinced, but I don't think he's being a troll.  I think he's having real troubles with ROM hacking and is genuinely frustrated.

But he just has absolutely no clue how to ask for help.

I'll post this again, Zachery, because I really want to help you.  I truly do.

You need to give information when you ask for help.  Simply saying "I'm having a problem" and showing a screenshot is not enough.  In this thread the only problem we can guess is that the Cup name didn't change.

...but you didn't tell us whether or not you actually tried to change the cup name.

Did you try changing it and the game does not reflect your changes?
Are you unable to find the text in the ROM and therefore were unable to change it?
Or was it something else?

Generally, when asking a question, hit all these bullet points:

1)  Give a brief introduction stating what the problem is.
2)  Tell us what you did, step by step.
3)  If you used any special tools or files, give links to them so that we can easily re-create your problem on our end.
4)  Tell us what changes you were expecting
5)  Tell us what actually happened
6)  If necessary highlight what is different about #4 & #5.
7)  Ask what you can do differently to achieve the desired result.
8 )  Do **NOT** assume people have read any of your other threads.  If you need another thread for context, say so in your post and give a link to the thread.  Or if there's only a tiny bit of info in that other thread, just repeat it again in the new thread.

Here is what your original post here should have looked like... following those bullet points:

Quote
Topic:  "[SNES] Cup name in SMK isn't changing."

Hey everyone, I'm making a Super Mario Kart (SNES) hack.  I want to change the names of the cups, but am having problems.

I'm using a table file I got here:  http://a_link_to_where_you_got_your_tbl_file

I found text that looks like it would be the names of the cups at offset 0x123456.  So I changed the text, but the changes did not show up in-game:

[ your image here ]

As you can see in the screenshot, it still says "MUSHROOM CUP".  I want it to say "FANTASY CUP"

Is offset 0x123456 the wrong address?  Is there a different change I need to make to the ROM?

Thanks.

Note that it is much harder to make a complete post like this.  You have to really think about what you've done and what you really want help with.  But doing this makes is SO MUCH EASIER for the people who can help you because they'll have all the information up-front and they won't have to play 20 questions trying to figure out what the actual problem is.  When you make it easier for us, we'll be more likely to help you.

It's OK to be frustrated, we've all been there.  But you're going about asking for help the wrong way.  Everyone's just trying to get the gist of what's going on.

Everyone doesn't mean to be rude here, but this is hacking.  There's more than one way to do something almost always, and the desired outcome can be anything.  If we pinpoint a problem from just a picture, we may have pointed out a placeholder or even something intentionally put there as a parody.  That means you need to be as descriptive as possible.

Title: Re: Zachery's Super Mario Kart hack

MIDI's and MP3's won't be helpful. Super Mario Kart uses a proprietary music format called N-SPC*:

http://wiki.superfamicom.org/snes/show/Nintendo+Music+Format+%28N-SPC%29 (http://wiki.superfamicom.org/snes/show/Nintendo+Music+Format+%28N-SPC%29)

It looks like F-Zero uses the same format (unless "Common" is different from -no distinction given-); there may still be some minor differences. (SMK begins the first part of the first channel of racetrack songs with "FA 1A". I don't know why, as $FA is an undocumented control-code, and for all I know it's a game-specific quirk.)

If I were you, I'd begin by finding the music data for the desired songs within the F-Zero ROM, and copy/pasting them into standalone .bin files for analysis/safekeeping. Do you know if the music data for F-Zero racetracks is compressed or not?

*Once you get into the nuts & bolts of this, I have a single-page quick reference for the control codes and another single-page reference for the tone bytes; let me know if you're interested in either.

Yeah... iirc you were using it before.  It was that 'smk.exe' program that was talked about the tutorial KPE gave you a while back.

I'm not going to bother asking followup questions to try and figure out what you mean by that

EDIT:  I had a sarcastic one-sentence followup here to try to illustrate how vague you're being... but whatever.  I don't care :P.

I meant what I said before, Zachary.  Reread one of the 5 other posts I made where I explain how to ask a question properly (and even provided multiple examples).  Until you do that and show me that you're actually putting in effort -- I'm not going to put in any of my effort.

For smaller tracks (incidental music, post-victory themes, basically everything not compressed), you're going to probably want to just type/paste the new music data over the old stuff.

For major (compressed) songs, you'll need to save the music data as a standalone .bin file, then import/compress via EpicEdit. I've found some odd quirks with this latter procedure:

1) End uncompressed data with "00-00-00-00-08".

2) Final byte address of .bin file WITH 4-byte header, minus 7 = size pointer for the first two bytes (of aforementioned header).

Have you analyzed the F-Zero tracks for conflicts with Channels 4, 6, 7 and 8?

UPDATE: All 20 Tracks (All 4 Cups) Completed and ready for grand prix's of any type

anyone good with making custom music for snes hacks? if there is anyone like that i have a question for you. can you PLEASE do music for my smk hack cause i clearly cant do it. this is a .smc file FOR THOSE WHO CAN DO SNES CUSTOM MUSIC ONLY. if you can't do it DON'T DOWNLOAD THAT FILE!

https://www.dropbox.com/home?preview=smk.smc

whoever manages to do music will be featured in the credits of this hack as "the one behind the music" BUT i must have a link to the modified .smc in order for that to happen

here are some songs i recommend for some of the tracks:

Turtle Circuit: Mario Kart 64 - Raceway Theme
Sand Ocean : anything non-Egyptian (eg. Dry Dry Desert, Desert Hills etc.. INCLUDING The ruins theme from super mario land)
Diamond Road: whatever you think fits
Yoshi Beach: Goof Troop - Sea robbery or whatever you think is better
Ghost Forest: Whatever you think fits
Red Canyon: anything non-western
White land: F-zero - white land 2 (not 1) or whatever you guys think is best
Fire Field: any non-bowser castle theme

Based on the name of the link I would remind you that linking to ROMs is not allowed on this site, but it appears that the Link doesn't actually work so...

Hey Zach, I'd suggest going over to baddesthacks.net and singing up for an account there so you can get Rotwang and/or Dr. Floppy to help you with this. Both have experience that will be very beneficial toward your goals here and I doubt either will be back to this site any time soon. BHDN is probably the best place to reach them. BHDN also has a chat function built into the main forum page. Dr. Floppy is there quite often. Being able to chat with him in real time would probably be the easiest way to figure some of this stuff out.
