Title: ROM Hacks: Super Mario Advance 4: eReader Version

Update By: CheatFreak47

With the recent release of Super Mario Advance 4 (http://"http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/01/heres_a_breakdown_of_the_extra_e-reader_levels_in_super_mario_advance_4_super_mario_bros_3_on_the_wii_u") to the Wii U virtual console, good old Nintendo decided it was time to dig through the archives and put together a version of the game that includes all 38 eReader Level Cards in it, hardcoded into the rom, rather then the save file.

Some clever people over on GBATemp have managed to take these changes out of the Wii U eShop game and make a patch for v1.1 of the original game, allowing anyone to take a crack at these fun, albeit obscure stages.

Well this is certainly good news! An easier method of playing those (somewhat) obscure levels without resourcing to (corrupted?/modified?) save files that may (or may not) be hard to find.

Nevermind, I had to delete my save file.

I'm reminded of the time that Phantasy Star 4's maximum level bug got fixed because somebody at Nintendo/whomever they hired for this put together a fix for their release of it.

Another cool thing about this is that you can now use the 7 e-switches hacked save file and access all the e-reader levels without save juggling. Tho I guess you could access them too, with cheat codes.

Somebody should look into dumping the European Drill Dozer.

I haven't paid attention. More than likely it's just the US ROM.
But I'm sure somebody out there has dumped it anyways.
But we shouldn't talk about that.

What about the fact that since the "changes" made by the patch were patches made by Nintendo and most certainly their copyright.

It's not the US one, curiously enough the recent EU Drill Dozer release is actually an all new version of the game. Or a previously unreleased one would probably be more accurate I suppose. It has all new language options and the unlockable costumes are the Japanese originals instead of the American versions. (Although I'd argue the American costumes are superior for what it's worth.)

So I'd be nice if a similar patch could be created from that, but I don't think there's much interest for that effort. I don't think too many people have noticed how weird that release is in the first place!

It's cool that someone did this but because Nintendo actually did something to make a Virtual Console game worthwhile to purchase i thought it was a good idea to encourage that kind of future behaviour and i bought it, despite it being overpriced like all VC games. I had the save files to play it via ROM but it was a pain in the ass and i like to be able to play my ROMS on my Wii/DS instead of PC.

Off topic but: You can hack a Wii to play emulators and roms in less than 5 minutes with Letterbomb.  ;)

Then this does give us free space in the save to do whatever we want? Unless the levels are still copied over from the rom...

100% of the level data is read from the rom itself.

It is possible to scan in, and play a homebrew level,  but even if you were to complete it,  it will NOT be saved to the save file.

All of the other eReader functions, including demo cards and power up cards, and switch cards still work,  provided you can find a way to link the game to an eReader.  :)

Speaking of Wii U hacks 'n stuff... has anyone ever been able to rip Super Luigi Bros. from NES Remix 2? If it's a rom at all. I've found no info on it and it'd be interesting to know what's with it.

I have tried.
I already have most of theROMs in NES Remix dumped and in playable format, except for three so far.

Although, I heard that Super Luigi Bros. is handled differently, as some sort of on the fly patch to the normal SMB ROM.

I really... REALLY want to get my hands on that one...

How about the genuine Luigi Bros. from Super Mario 3D World? We have this (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1721/), but what about the real deal?

And on the subject of NES Remix, how about Speed Mario Bros. from Ultimate NES Remix?

Sadly none of those is available from the NES Remix dump nor SM3DW. :/
I already dumped and ran all of the ROMs in NES Remix and none of them since to be Super Luigi Bros.
There's gotta be some sort of patch in the files that gets applied over one of the Super Mario Bros. ROMs.

I haven't checked Ultimate NES Remix but I jump into saying that it can be the same thing with that one.

The ROM name is found in the hack's page:
* Super Mario Advance 4 - Super Mario Bros. 3 (USA, Australia) (Rev 1)

Simply run a Google search for that and download the ROM from a page with the result.

As for the IPS, go to ZeBucket and search for the word "SuperMarioAdvance4" and you will find the .rar file with the IPS and xdelta patches. ;)

Is that one okay too?

Hey there!
I'm just dropping by to say that a friend of mine who is quite knowledgeable in ARM language is working on a code on his own to make this patch legal and reupload it to RomHacking, although the patch will be quite big (like 1MB or so).

The patch might be up within the next two weeks, so look forward to it! :D

I don't care alot about the ereader levels myself, played some of them, after a while they all start to look the same. What I really want is a rom hack where the ereader cards are selectable via a menu in the main game. I wanna play smb3 with vegtables again.
