Title: Getting Your Hack Seen
Post by: Goodgis on December 11, 2014, 10:36:33 am
Hey Everyone, I want to help people get there hacks played by people so I was thinking of doing Let's Plays for people that want me to play there games. If you would like me to play one of your hacks send me a message. Just make sure the hack some considerable differences in game-play and graphics. Also let me know if this sounds like a dumb idea.

I think let's plays in general are a dumb idea (though that is probably more that I would sooner do an awful lot of unpleasant things than put unedited and unscripted video content out there) but apparently I turned into an old man when I was not looking so I will leave that one.

"Just make sure the hack some considerable differences in game-play and graphics"
Do I detect a fellow cynic? For video content it becomes somewhat viable to do a compare and contrast. Trouble is quite a few hacks are a bit more subtle than that.

"so I was thinking of doing Let's Plays for people that want me to play their games"
Are you particularly noted in the field of let's plays?

I like the idea. I don't have anything to propose for a let's play (not yet), but I'll be bak in a few... err... well in months. ;D

This is a solid point. I don't mean the grammar nazi that I am, but I am--so the mistakes in your original post left me with less than a feeling of confidence in the quality standard you would have in your videos. But, I'd love to be proven wrong because I don't think there are enough videos of hacks on YouTube.

So, I'd suggest grabbing a hack that catches your interest -and is for a game that you're familiar with. Then, make the video you want to make. Post it here, and if it's good, people will come knocking at your door wanting you to do videos of their hacks. If not, people probably still will, just less of them.

Your first remark was bias and therefore pointless to me. Secondly, I was just saying I wanted more complete hacks. Nobody wants to watch a video about a game they have seen a million times before with an engine that has only changed a little bit.

I strive to make the best quality I can. Sorry if I came across illiterate but maybe this video can prove to you what I am capable of. I decided to do some Christmas rom hacks up until Christmas, so this is my first episode. And because of this video it inspired another LPer to record this game as well. By no means to I have a massive following but I do have a fan base which continues to grow every day.

Interesting, but you lost me at the southern accent tangent.  Some get into that kind of thing, but I prefer commentary that stays more on topic. Maybe starting off by explaining who authored the hack, when it was released, and doing a bit of research could give you some more material. If you need more subject matter, you could read through the readme and its RHDN entry, try to track down old dev threads, and maybe even send the author an email with some questions or something.

Thanks. I appreciate your candid feedback. I'll try doing just that.

As an aside, I find it amusing that ROM hackers possess such articulateness.

When your hobby consists of precise, detailed and complex work it tends to then also get reflected in approaches to life and language, I see similar things when I watch videos of machinists as it is almost as though precise, methodical approaches to things get reflected in their editing and camera work.

On the "more complete hacks" thing I would agree but in some cases you will find that hackers and general game players have a somewhat different definition of that, though even among hackers it is by no means a set distinction/definition. For instance I would agree that nobody really cares about those pokemon hacks where someone changes the starters and probably then gives you all the good ones before you get to the next town, however there are also hacks that rebalance loads of stats in a game (various final fantasy and similar games being good for this sort of thing) that radically change how things play out. A focus on major graphics and gameplay changes may cause you to miss some of those, and in doing so you would be missing out on some of the better stuff ROM hacking has to offer.

I agree with that.

I might take you up on your offer when Mario's Nightmare Quest is finished (because hey, the more LPs the better), but it's not really mission critical.  I mean, you can find many, many people playing Mario ROM hacks on Youtube, some of which have thousands of subscribers (or more).

I'm also hoping to get raocow to play it.
