Title: Alex Kidd HD
Post by: macbee on September 15, 2012, 09:33:02 pm
Hello!
I've had recently discovered this "HiSMS" emulator (despite it was released back in 2009) - and I'm in love with it because it lets you to create high-definition hacks of Sega Master System games.
Right now I'm modifying "Alex Kidd in Miracle World". All graphics are now 4 times bigger. I'm attaching two videos taken from this enhanced emulator. Hope you like it:

The idea of HiSms is pretty cool, but what really impresses me is the execution of that Alex Kidd hack. It really looks like an HD version of the original!

Most impressive!  Your graphics are nice, clean, and very true to the original.

Gosh, haven't played this in so long.  Had one a late-release MS with it built-in up until my room flooded.  Didn't work so well after that ;*)

That's quite impressive. This  emulator looks like it would be a great way to make quick graphic hacks too. I wish there was something like this for NES. I can think of dozens of games I'd want to make HD enhancements for right off the top of my head.

It'd be well within the realm of possibility for games that use CHR-ROM.

Wow Macbee, I've never heard of this emulator, but it is awesome! As I understand from the tutorial, you can make games look almost photorealistic :D
Hope to see your finished work on my PC one day!

Is there an archive of these tilesets?

Only on my Hard Disk so far :)

Thank you! =)
I also messed around with a Sonic 2 promo released only in Brazil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeegmIt03nM

I think they're charming too - but they're definitely not sacred.
If you don't like my hack, well... just play the original game.

wonderful! Never ever heard of this emu, it was really advanced for the time!

Is there something like that for other consoles too?

Nice! This is awesome. Do Zillion and Quartet next :D I really love the old Sega Master System games. This should be really cool to try out. Would be even more cool to figure out in the emulator how to add functionality for Sega CD like Kega Fusion has. This way Master System games can have mp3 soundtracks to them. Along with the HD Graphics that would be pretty damn cool. Though as it is this is great.

These vids look great. How far would you say you're into the game percentage-wise?

Unrelatedly, I think I came across some old forum posts where you may have been working on a Sunman-to-Superman NES hack, black & white, George Reeves style. Am I correct there? If so, do you have any screens or vids of that still floating around?

Sorry for taking forever to reply!

Yes, there's a specific version of "MyNES" emulator that allows the creation of hi-res graphics.
However it's insanely complicated to use (God knows I tried!).
I would love to see other emulators with these hi-res tools too (Specially for Atari 2600, NES, GameBoy and MSX).

I don't know how to say much is done - but there still are A LOT of graphics to be changed.
At least it's a small game with just a few sprites and backgrounds (compared to later SMS titles).

And yes, I was trying to turn Sunman into Superman many years ago.
I can't remember exactly what happened - but I guess I wasn't being successful in changing title screen sprites. So I give up.

This is looking pretty awesome so far.

By any chance, would you have any interest in trying your hand at Fantasy Zone in the future? The graphics seem like they would be simple enough to work with, especially considering all the stage backgrounds are repeating, pre-rendered images.

I guess Fantasy Zone would be a nice title to make Hi-Res graphics in a near future.
It's a small game (1 Megabit, just like Alex Kidd) and the visuals of this game are crazy enough to make me interested on it. :)

I'd love to see hi-quality sound added to these Roms too.

I would assume if it was able to be done with Sonic Megamix which was basically hacking a Genesis ROM to become a Sega CD iso, than doing the same process with Master System ROMs, wouldn't be too far behind.

Everything but the main character sprite looks great. Dunno Alex looks iffy. No idea what I would do about it beyond maybe losing him a few pounds

He looks as fat as the original, japanese Alex Kidd from the mid-1980s.
All Alex sprites (except the ones when he dies) will not be changed. I'm very happy with them.

That's just awesome. I'm really impressed by the results. Can't wait to get a playable version  ::)

Also : i'm surprised to discover there is almost no project that have been done with HiSMS so far (it have been around since almost 4 years)... I didn't even know the existence of this tool before seeing this thread.

Is it because SMS was not a so popular console ? or because there is nobody that bother doing HD version of old games (too much work, etc)

Thanks Tigrou! I'll probably release a new gameplay video in a week or two.

Your theories (on HiSMS obscurity) make all sense to me. And Botrops (HiSMS creator) tried to let people know about his emulator on message boards years ago - but many people criticized it negatively without even trying to use it.
I can't say for sure but I believe Botrops gave up on HiSMS due to this unnecessary criticism. Only v.0.01 beta 1 was released and there's no mention of older HiSMS projects on Google.

I'll be happy if my Alex Kidd hack helps to do justice to this wonderful tool. It would be amazing to see more HiSMS projects from other romhackers.

I just discovered heigboy (http://www.mobile-dev.ch/index.php?page=pcsoft_heigboy) emulator which give possilibity of recolorizing gb titles easily (by modifying palette of tiles). I tried it and it works fairly good.

Also, since C source is provided (both emulator AND color it utility) and it is clean and easy to read, i guess it would be a good starting point for anyone who want to make a tool similar to HiSMS but for gameboy.

For such tools a good idea would be to generate a file containing only checksums of original 8x8 tiles and the data of their corresponding new, bigger tiles. This way files could be distributed legally, since it would not contain any data from orginal rom, only checksums (this is how ColorIt works, but for palettes).

I just discovered heigboy (http://www.mobile-dev.ch/index.php?page=pcsoft_heigboy) emulator

This might be a good approach for colorizing Metroid II. There have been some attempts to produce IPS patches, but no one has been able to overcome the issue of garbage tiles appearing when Samus transitions between different map areas. I think there are also some palette issues in the Queen Metroid's chambers.

I suppose that's another discussion entirely, though...

really good job as usual, the red balls really looks like sweet and candy  :P

also : i'm always surprised to see how the sandwich at end of level looks... it's a white triangle with a black square on it while in my child memory i remember something more tasty. before posting this I tought it was a emulator bug / glitch but in the end it's not. after some searching i found some arts (flyers, etc) that shows it's actually... a pile of rice ! (maybe not new for most of you but not for me):

i was able to find a screen with a version that looks like what i remember : http://s3.vidimg.popscreen.com/original/0/eDk3OGl2MTI=_o_sega-master-system-1986-alex-kidd.jpg (http://s3.vidimg.popscreen.com/original/0/eDk3OGl2MTI=_o_sega-master-system-1986-alex-kidd.jpg)

question : on youtube video you posted, text is in english so i suppose this version is NTSC-U version am i right ?  if so why is meal shown as rice and not as sandwich like (i suppose) PAL (european) version ?

Too bad something like this wasn't considered for the PS3 release. It's just an emulated port.

Tigrou, thats not a sandwish, that a Japonese food called ONIGRI

you can take a look at it here:

In some versions of the game the onigiri is replaced with a hamburger. Maybe that's where he got it from?

Sorry for taking more than 1 year to reply.  :-[

I'm hacking the game using Alex Kidd in Miracle World (UE) (V1.1) [!] ROM. I don't know exactly how many versions of this game were released.
I used to play the "rice ball version" of Alex Kidd (back in the early 1990s) here in Brazil - so I wanted it on my hack instead of the sandwich.

By the way, this modification of Alex Kidd was featured on Retro Games Magazine (December/2013 edition):

I must say I'm highly impressed by what was achieved here. Having grown up to Sega systems, Alex Kidd filled a large part of my childhood (and also taught me the bittersweet frustration of getting far into a game just to run out of continues ha-ha). Anyway, please keep up the good work, thank you for bringing back so many memories.

As others have mentioned, I'd be particularly happy to see a Zillion HDification, if you ever work on that.

A Google search for HiSMS will most likely help you find the tool the author used for his Alex Kidd project.

Also, sad to see this project was never finished nor released, as it was basically the equivalent of the HD texture packs I see floating around for N64 and NES, and not techinically a ROM Hack.

Though, to answer those years old questions regarding if NES had an emulator that could so what HiSMS, there IS. It's called HDNes, and I remember seeing screenshots of someone making an HD texture pack for Super Mario Bros using New Super Bros graphics. It was pretty insane.  :)
