Title: Tetris Battle Gaiden
Post by: KingMike on August 18, 2011, 10:14:25 pm
Seems like a small game to translate, so I figured I might as well make a script translation request thread.
Working on a graphics compressor, giving me a bit of trouble even if it's just RLE compression.
(I had one done, but optimizing it to match the efficiency of the original data turned into a mess, so I started over.)

Intro text for 1P game, depending on character selected:

Not sure what do about the title. It has 武闘外伝 written in bubbles, written in front of a book that has TETRIS テトリスバトリ外伝 written on it. Leave the bubbles alone, leave them but add "BU","TOU","GAI","DEN" to them, remove them entirely?

If you can't find help...
Use these things:

-Online Translator
-Thesaurus

1. Translate selected word. If it comes out right, then no need for step 2,
but if it doesn't really fit in...

2.Look up in a Thesaurus your word, and find any ones that are related to it and what you are after.

Haha TanUKi, I don't know if you were actually trying to be helpful or if you were being sarcastic, but I'm sure you don't know who KingMike is if you were being one of those things. He's your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate all in one.

I like the style of that Japanese font, I wonder if the game has English font in that same style.

Mirurun
ミルルン = Mirurun.
ハンテン = Reversal.  The ability reverse the opponent's controls.
ペンタリス = Pentris.
スリトテ = Sirtet.
[NOTE: An interesting thing to note is that Duel Masters calls Mirurun as Mirlun (http://duelmasters.wikia.com/wiki/Mirlun).]

Shaman:
モーゼ = Moses.  Because of it's ability to split the blocks in the middle like what Moses did with the Red Sea.
カイテン = Rotate. The ability rotates the opponent's blocks.

Aladdin:
シーソー = Seesaw.
ファックス = Facs.  Derived from the word "facsimile" because its ability is copying, "Fax" also works.

Ninja:
ヨセ = Yose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yose).
ダイナシ = Considering the ability messes up the opponent side, maybe "Shamble" would be a better word?

Wolfman
- ヌー = Nous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nous)?
- ナカヨシ = Chum.  As in friend, considering that it appears to be a healing technique.
- ドトン = Earth Release.  I think it's from this word 土遁.

◔_◔ I know his place in the Rom Hacking Community, and I was trying to be a bit helpful...
Anyway, I'm sorry to say but I find his title screen hacks truly awful (graphical side). Sorry if this offends you KingMike.

What the...?

First you try to tell him something obvious like using an online translator to translate something and now you tell him his title screen hacks suck?

Way to go man!!

I like the style of that Japanese font, I wonder if the game has English font in that same style.
The existing English font is just an 8x16 Courier-style font.

That text is stored as a compressed tilemap.
So, I'd guess a translation would need to use an 8x8 font to fit all the text.

I'm thinking maybe the one on the options screen?
As you can see, it uses two different fonts together.
It uses an ASCII font, with the "uppercase" values being the Courier font and the "lowercase" being the rounded characters (the one I'm thinking of copying).

Yes, the rounded ones look better. Once you color it and apply the shading of the Japanese characters, it should look really cool.

Good luck with the translation of this game. I registered here just to show my support. This game is easily the best Tetris game on the snes (in my opinion) so I very much look forward to finally getting to play and see this in english.

Has there been any progress since the last post?

Well it is one of the best at the very least. It's a shame that so many people have not had the pleasure of playing this game with somebody.

Not much, other than that I did get the re-compressor to create a file identical to the original (meaning, it should be optimized now). So inserting the translation should be easy if that gets done. :)

Indeed the bunny thing is called "Mirurun" in the manual, but apparently ビット is supposed to be Bit and not Beat.

Hey guys, here's the 1P character descriptions, with kanji put in. I figure it might make them easier to translate. I'll probably take a shot at at least some of these if no one else does. This game looks so cute!

EDIT: Please note these are not literal translations; I cleaned them up a bit to sound less like Engrish. Well, except for Aladdin's, which is supposed to sound cheesy.

Halloween:
おかしとイタズラが、大スキなハロウィン。
いつもおかしのことで、頭の中はいっぱいなんだ。
この世界に住んでいる、ドラゴンの秘密のおかしが、
食べたくて、食べたくてしかたがない。
『どーすればドラゴンのおかしが食べれるのかな』

Halloween loves candy and mischief.
His head is constantly filled with thoughts of sweets.
Naturally, he wants nothing more than to eat
the Secret Candy of the dragon that inhabits this world.
"Gee, I wonder how I can get the dragon's candy?"

Mirurun:
心優しいミルルン。
今日も、明日も、そのまた次の日も、トモダチ
求めてミルルンの旅は続きます。
さあ、今日も新しい出会いが、ミルルンを待って
います。
『僕とトモダチになってね!』

A creature with a heart of gold,
Mirurun will continue its journey to find friends
today, tomorrow, and the day after that.
And so, as always, Mirurun is waiting
to meet someone new.
"Won't you be my friend?"

Shaman:
シャーマン一族に伝わる、伝説のクスリ。
そのクスリは、どんなビョウキも、直してしまう
というフシギなクスリ。
それにはドゴンのウロコが必要らしい。。。
『おらが、そのドラゴンのウロコを取ってくるだ』

The tale of a legendary potion has been passed down
through a family of Shamans--a mysterious potion
which can cure any illness.
What's more, this potion seems to require
a dragon's scale...
"I shall fetch that dragon's scale!"

Aladdin:
冒険とユメは、僕の宝物。今日も、
空飛ぶジュウタンに乗り、大空をゆく!
『おや?確かここは。。。
そうだ!ドラゴンがいるというシマ!マホウの
ランプよ!今日も力を貸してくれ!さあ!
冒険の世界へ』

Dreams and adventure are what I treasure!
Once again I will take to the skies on my flying carpet!
"Huh? I'm sure this is...
Yes! This is the island the dragon is on! Magic lamp!
Lend me your strength as you have before!
Let us journey into a world of adventure!"

Princess:
エルシップジョウに住む、二人のお姫様。
ある日、上のお姫様が、ドラゴンに
さらわれてしまいました。知性と 勇気に
あふれるお姫様は、姉を助けに、旅立ちます。
『姉様、待っててね!私。。負けない!』

Two princesses live in L-Ship Castle.
One day, though, the elder one was
kidnapped by a dragon. The younger
one--a girl of much intellect and courage--
set out on a journey to save her sister.
"Hold on, Sister! I-I won't fail!"

Bit:
いつでも、どこにいても、仲良しゴニングミ。
いつでも、どこにいても、ヨウキなゴニングミ。
今日も皆で、楽しい旅の、空の下。
誰とでも、ドラゴンとでもヨウキに踊りたい!
『ワーイワーイ!楽しいなったら、楽しいな』

A group of five lads who are best of chums, whenever and wherever.
A group of five lads who are cheerful whenever and wherever.
As always, they wander the world together on a fun-filled journey!
They want to dance with everyone, including the dragon!
"Yippee! We'll have fun, fun, fun!"

Note: 旅の空の下 is an idiomatic expression which seems to be used a lot in poetry. I did the best I could, but it doesn't have a direct English equivalent.

Ninja:
シュギョウ中の彼の元に、許婚の
キョウコさんが、悪い魔法使いに、魔法で
カエルにされたとの知らせが届いた。元に戻るには、
ドラゴンの知っているクスリが必要らしい。。。
『必ず元の姿に戻してやるからな。』

As he was training, word came to him that his
fiancee Kyouko had been turned into a frog by
an evil sorcerer. It seems a potion is needed to change
her back to normal, and the dragon knows of it...
"I promise I'll change you back to normal."

魔法使い is actually a gender-neutral term, so you may want to confirm that it's a sorcerer (and not a sorceress) in-game.

Wolfman:
久方振りに、故郷のクニに帰ってみれば、
何とクニは大騒ぎ!お姫様が、ドラゴンに
拐かされてしまった!このまま見過す、わけに
はいかねえ!男一匹、後には引かねえ!
『いざ!せっしゃと、尋常に勝負だ!』

I returned to my homeland after a great many years
only to find it in an uproar! The princess has been
kidnapped by a dragon! I can't stand by and
do nothing! A real man does not back down!
"Come, fight me with honor!"

Tetris fan translations never took off. There's none yet uploaded to RHDN. :)

I finished all the 1P character descriptions. KingMike, if you're looking for a translator for this game, I'd be delighted.  :D

On a side note, I can't imagine how an online translator would have mangled some of these descriptions, like Bits' and Wolfman's. The latter had a lot of old-fashioned samurai talk in it that an online translator could not handle.  :P

Hope to see a translation for this game at some point. My girlfriend and me love to play it on occasion. Japanese text or not it's still quite playable.
