Title: Romance of Forgotten Kingdom (DOS) Translation
Post by: derboo on April 11, 2010, 03:09:28 am
This is a Korean RPG developed by Mirinae Software and published by Pantech, released in 1995.

EDIT: The patch version 0.9 is released now:

Interesting looking RPG.  What's the battle system like?

For the love of all that is holy: please don't leave stuff in ALL CAPS. Names, menus, stats, etc.

Interesting looking RPG.  What's the battle system like?

Kind of like a variation on the Final Fantasy ATB. Characters can attack at all time, but the longer you wait, the more damagage is dealt. It can get a bit hectic at times.
Here's a battle screen from the other thread:

For the love of all that is holy: please don't leave stuff in ALL CAPS. Names, menus, stats, etc.

OK.

EDIT:
Got rid of the all caps (except for the job titles, because I need to change some of them later, anyway).

Here's a current screenshot:

I also submitted a help wanted ad now, in hope to find someone who can figure out a way to rearrange the text pointers for me (One chunk of text for the ordinary NPC dialogues is contained in a seperate file with a very simple pointer table, but the text block for the cutscenes and menus seems more complicated).

If I can make a quick recommendation: Use "Att." and "Def." as abbreviations for "Attck" and "Dfens," respectively. It might look a lot neater.

For "H/L" and "H/L," I would just recomment "Left" and "Right." A lot of games will do this, so it's fairly recognizable that this implies the game is referring to the characters' hands.

As for this...

... Maybe change "ACCUR" to "Hit," "AGLTY" to "Agi" and "LIFE" to "HP." I'm not sure what "RECUR" represents.

I really like everything else, though. It's all very neatly done.

It's RECVR, or "Recovery".

Oh, I see. I wonder what sort of attribute that represents. Perhaps how quickly the character bounces back after being struck?

I haven't quite figured out all of the stats yet, but I think it is about how fast the action bar is filling up after an attack.

Thanks for your suggestions, I like most of them. Only "Left" and "Right" won't quite be possible without hacking help, because I only have four letters of space for each, as it stands.

LH and RH or L/H R/H should suffice.  Most RPG players will recognize those designations.

Otherwise, the game looks pretty decent.

Progress has been slow the last few months... the script is about 20% finished now. Menus should be at 80%-90%.

But I managed to figure out the remaining pointers, so I can get decent string lengths for everything. Now the only noticeable limitation is menu spacing, but that's not too bad in most cases.

Props for this, man. I only recently read up on Mirinae starting from HardcoreGaming101 and a lot of their work seems pretty interesting. Cool to see something a little more obscure getting love.

I do hope we get more Asian titles other than Japanese stuff translated.

I now figured out the file format for the Title screen. Would anyone here like to design the English title?

I'd like to keep the Chinese characters, but have the title below and the company name in English, all in fonts that fit in. Maybe also a translation note next to the company logo. The image has to be edited in PCX format. Please send me a PM if interested.

You should probably provide translations for anybody who feels up to the challenge and cross-post in Screenshots (http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,10333.465.html).

If you're able to use a 256-colour palette for the image then something like this could work:

Looks nice, and after converting back to PCX, it was no problem to reinsert into the game. Unless anyone comes up with a more artistic variant (eg. mimicking the font of the title), I'd like to use that. There's one small issue with the company name, though. It should be "Mirinae" instead of "Nirimae".

hmm I swear I did an M, I think it might be the outer glow I applied to it making it look like an N.

[edit]

Here's an updated one, I expanded the company name so the M's more obvious, and changed the font to something more suited to the handwritten/calligraphy font the main title uses

Wow, that looks cool.

But still the company name isn't fully correct. The problem with the first draft was that the M and n were switched around, the second m has to be an n yet.

Not much progress with the script, lately, but I finally figured out the image format for the opening credits. Here are comparison shots:

Neat.

You know, I never really figured a good way to capture the essence of that blocky letter style in Japanese or Roman characters. It is unequivocally a Hangul look.

Btw, I was thinking about what patching system to use for the patch later. Is there a system that can create one single patch file from multiple changed game files?

I found a scanned advertisement for the game someone had uploaded on the web, which shows the title in English in an "official" font, so I decided to go with that:

The script is at about 50% now (the game is rather short for an RPG), but I'm making good progress lately, so it probably won't take another year. ;)

Not a progress update this time (although there has been some progress), but I've got an interview with the director of this game, and we also talk a bit about Romance of Forgotten Kingdom:

With help from Tauwasser, I was able to convert the ending credits now:

The script is now fully translated and "only" needs reinserting the final third. This is the most annoying task in the whole process, but I should be able to upload a patch before the end of June.

Wow, this game looks pretty cool and I've never heard of it. I wonder how complicated it is to do DOS hacking. I know nothing about it.

I wonder how complicated it is to do DOS hacking. I know nothing about it.

It really depends on the game. This one made some things comparatively easy, as it had an English font already built in, and the Korean text was fairly accessibly stored in an old standard format.

Graphics hacking has been the hardest part, the tile viewers used for ROM hacks of console games are mostly useless here. I had to write two converters for graphics myself, and there are still a few things I have no hope finding without assembler hacking, which I'm incapable of. These two bits will most likely remain untranslated in the release:

Left: "Miss" notification above the character in white; Right: Analyze spell enemy status information

After the translation has been sitting on my hard disc in an almost-done state for nearly half a year, I finally found the time to put it all together. It's currently waiting to get approved for the database, in the meantime you can get more info here:

EDIT: The entry is up:

Is there a chance to get a news post on the front page for this? AFAIK this is the first ever fully playable fan translated Korean RPG.

This Game looks excellent! :D I'd wonder if it's possible to port a dos 16-bit rpg game like this to the Super Famicom/SNES or the Sega Genesis w/english translation? tho i'll take many years or months for that too happen! :-\

The game files take up much more space than even the largest 16-bit cartridges. It should be possible with a more economic composition and/or compression, though, the game isn't all that big. Of course you'd also have to deal with lower resolution (SNES) and lower color depth (Genesis), but other than that, the game has nothing that would go beyond either system's capabilities.

True your right but are the special effects have that SNES type game engine sorta for it to port easily? like rotation DSP-1 chip type effects or similar?
