Is this based on HardType or EasyType?

Neither. This is based in FFII US. FFII US and FF Easy Type are not the same game. (It's very possible that Easy Type was based on FFII US, but it goes further and changes more things than even FFII US did, like adding new equipment and such.)

Project II does restore all of the content cut out of FFII US, and undoes the two major instances of censorship. The terms used are supposed to be indicative of a natural bridging point between Phil Sandhop's FFI and Ted Woolsey's FFVI, so you get Tonics, Potions, and X-Potions but learn Nuke, etc. It does not revert the maps, nor the five or so enemies whose stats and/or AI changed. (The only AI changes between FFII US and FFIV J are that Asura no longer casts Armor and I believe Milon no longer casts Curse.) So yes, the Beginner's Classroom is still there and you can still see certain hidden paths.

I've been told my script is among the best, but if you really want modern terms and the restored maps/AI, I highly recommend FFIV: Namingway Edition by my friend Rodimus Primal. :)

Okay, I see. Definitely not requesting anything here, just want to state what I've been thinking on.

Here's my further changes:
Rosa should become a blood knight instead (blood-red-armor sprite and angry portrait), after been nearly dead due to some accident in the past (attacked by Golbez or by the Big Four) and then forced-maintained to life by Cecil the white mage for the service of Baron. Thing is, at this state, she becomes so bloodthirsty that people fear her including the Baron king and even "Kaina" the dragoon.
Dialogs should be rewritten on how Rosa scolds her soldiers as too 'tame' or 'weak' for complaining about ransacking Water Village and king's assistant try his best to speak politely to her. Rosa also complaining to her king on why she is not given bloodier tasks than this. Kaina plead also for Rosa (she secretly want Rosa to get into more trouble and thus leave Cecil for herself), on which the king tries to appease them with promises while giving her a simpler task now: sending the package.
Also changed are dialogs where Cecil visited Rosa in her bedroom and regrets being not good enough to fully restore her, and that this is not the way he wants Rosa to live on.
Being a blood knight, she has stronger attack than Cecil DK, but her weakness is lower DEF or lower HP. To compensate that, her specialty is berserk (slashes all opponents and gain a little HP)
Also, Cecil DK equipments should now be renamed into Red/Blood/Lava/Magma instead of Dark/Shade, and red colored.

But her encounter with Rydia changes Rosa. She reminds her of her younger self before becoming the blood knight. She behaves much better afterwards (thus no more text adjustment after meeting Rydia ;D )
And after meeting her father 'Jor-el' in the mountain, Rosa will be completely healed body and soul, and turns into the Pink Paladin or Scarlet Paladin! (pink/red not-full body armor sprite, & happier, more confident portrait (which drooling Cecil the white mage even more) ).
As Pink/Scarlet Paladin, she's more agile than Cecil's Paladin (and her specialty is Cecil DK's special wave attack turned into pink color but taking no HP penalty)

you're welcome to make a mod like that based off of daughter of darkness and light if you want. ff6tools and ff4kster are easy to use. you'll also need aseprite to change colors of an indexed png without reordering the palette, but it's fairly user friendly

i can also give you the offsets to change palette colors

@vivify
Interesting. Thanks, but I don't think I would go far even with those

Oh, I forgot to tell you that Project II v3.03 readme mentions headered FF2(U)(v1.1) as the base rom, but the stated CRC32 is actually for headerless FF2(U)(v1.1).

3.04 is out. Courtesy of chillyfeez, this update fixes the bug where Rydia seemingly doesn't lose MP when she casts Sylph.

This bug has apparently been improperly recorded over the years. People thought it correlated to a specific slot to place the Sylph spell in, but apparently, the real issue is that instead of properly subtracting MP, it sets Rydia's MP to the MP of the spellcaster--in this case, her own. So it's overwriting her current MP value with her current MP value, recursively. If she's in the center position, it seems to work properly, but most people don't put her there.

This is at least the behavior I've observed. I was told for most people it works properly unless she's in the center slot, but the opposite was true for me.

Unrelated, but I want to ask here as well: Would there at all be any interest in Project III: Final Fantasy VI? It brings nothing to the table, really. But it's been done for a little while, and I kind of want to release it. But I do feel that another FFVI script/improvement mod would be pretty pointless. After all, the game's been worked on so many times. (I think there are 10 script hacks and 3 text-only retranslations? And then 3 official localizations.)

You should hear her complain about it: "Magic points? I can't get rid'a ya!"

Seems Project II it's also compatible with Record Keeper Battle
 Sprites Port
and the MSU-1 hack.

Hi there FlamePurge!
I'm interested and I think many others would be also! I think it'll be a good idea for you to release it because it'll give players an extra option to choose from! Plus your work on Project II is phenomenal so I trust that it'll be great as well!

Cheers!  :)

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.

I've released Project III here: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7005/

And it can be discussed in my projects' megathread here: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=34043.0

I know this is an old post but I think there is a problem with the rom you need to patch for this:

- I tried patching Final Fantasy II (U) (V1.1).smc with CRC32 23084fcd and it fails: the game doesn't even start, the screen is just black with no music.
- I patch Final Fantasy II (U) (V1.1).smc with CRC32 9461d9f8 and seems to work: the game starts and the opening plays.

I'm testing this both in emulator and SuperNt via an everdrive and with the last version of the patch: 3.04

Maybe i'm understanding wrong the .txt since I don't know which is the difference between the File CRC32 and the Rom CRC32...

Thank you for the work

Thanks KingMike. I thought that smc files where always with header and sfc without it, but in any case I'll double check later at home if I was using a smc file without the proper header.

Edit: So I checked again with the intended file here https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1659/ and it worked well. Clearly yesterday I did something wrong. Sorry for the bother and the confusion.

FlamePurge

No bother at all. I'm glad you were able to figure it out. 😁

*taps mic* Is this thing still on?

v3.05 is out. It fixes a bug in the code for Pray, where it would fail every time if the center slot of the party was open. Fixed thanks to chillyfeez.
