Kirby's Dream Land 2 was first released in 1995 on the monochrome Game Boy, with very limited coloring if played on the Super Game Boy. The third mainline Kirby game, it allows Kirby to combine forces with three friends--Rick, Coo, or Kine--to expand his arsenal. For many years, it was trapped in the irony of being a game involving rainbows yet actually having minimal color...until now, after over a year of on-and-off hacking work to bring it to the Game Boy Color.

This colorization hack not only colorizes every scene and object in the game, but also adds extra visual effects, removes slowdowns in the original game, and provides a new settings menu with some cosmetic options.

This is outstanding! My favorite Game Boy game has been colorized! I feel like a kid on Christmas.

It is beautiful! I can't wait to play through it again! Thank you!

How does it handle the dark rooms that the Fish lights up?

They work just like they do in vanilla, except they also fade in/out this time. I do recall it took a fair amount of tweaking to get working, as did the screen palette updater in general.

Looks excellent!

I guess the SGB border feature is lost, begin a GBC program now, right?

EDIT: Nevermind. Ought to read things through first! my bad!

EDIT2: Some SGB games have more than one border, which may be cued in for different levels for example. Does Kirby 2 have those, and will the unofficial SGB+GBC mode allow borders to load at any point, or only the initial one?

Has anybody gotten this to work with the Analogue Pocket GB Studio Patch? The first Kirby was easily patchable for .pocket, but for some reason the second one won't patch correctly no matter what order I do it in.

The hack has passed over 100k downloads in only 5 days, that was very fast!

Dream Land 2 only has one border. Games that do have more should most definitely load those in SGB+GBC, because that part of the SGB is fully emulated.

Yeah, pretty surreal if you ask me.

Last time I actually played GB was on a DS emu GameYob, I think it was.
It seems the implementation was based on first running in SGB mode until a border was loaded, keep the border on screen and reboot as GBC. The idea being that even if the SGB functions were active, the game internally wouldn't even try using them while running in GBC mode. As a result, only the initial border was displayed.
I always wondered whether it was possible to have SGB functions while running as GBC, or if there was any kind of overlap that would force to choose one or another, since officially they were never meant to work together. Assuming such an arrangement was possible, I imagined existing official software wouldn't readily work with it anyway, and modification would be needed.
I guess your mod counts as one such piece of software, then :)

I've been busy so haven't had time to type this yet, but: thank you!  KDL1's color hack got me started on the series, looking forward to continuing with this.

Custom boxart anyone, for your emulator frontends?

Here it is in both Japanese and English styles.

That patch only worked with the original version. There's a pocket patch available for DX 2 now though.
