After nearly 35 years, a complete translation of Final Fantasy for the MSX has been released. This is the very first port of Final Fantasy ever made, and it was only available to Japan. This port is faithful to the original Famicom/NES version while also featuring improved graphics and music as well as bug fixes.

This fan translation is based off the original NES localization, however, the translation project and its tools are open source to allow for anyone to adjust the script to how they see fit.

This was detailed in the readme, but posting it here for better visibility: included with the translation is a translated manual, which is based on a manual scan from online, but the last few pages are missing. The table of contents reference a magic list, but it isn't included in the scan. Additionally, the staple alignment in the scan also corroborates there's pages missing in the scan. If you have a complete manual scan for the game, let me know.

I'm impressed! Didn't think think anyone was going to bother with the MSX version of FF1. Doesn't change the fact that it's objectively the worst version of FF1. I've been doing a series run, playing every version of every game for Reddit clout, and FF1 MSX gave me burnout for a while, it's that bad. I reckon bugtesting must've been hell for you. Is it as intended that the bps file as downloaded from romhacking.net is only 31 bytes?

And this everyone, is why you don't rush a hotfix out. Originally, the base disk image was an obscure dump, so I submitted a patch based of of a more common dump. The submission is in the queue. Sorry for the confusion everyone.

Amusingly, I ran into your reddit post while making the translation. Good work. And thanks! For beta testing, I essentially let people finish the game and play normally. As for being the worst port, the translation inspired the creation of a performance patch, making the game a lot more playable. Definitely a must have if you want to play this port.

The update has been approved and was verified by a third party as well to work. Sorry about the confusion.

From https://www.romhacking.net/translations/6877/
QuoteCRC32: E268F257
MD5: 636370BA2BBD18F94168D93D82988848
SHA-1: 88313A53A1301D030317D5D1B76C16FCF4AE1A21

WinHex indeed shows these MD5 and SHA-1 hashes for the .dsk file I have (737,280 bytes), but shows a different CRC32 hash: DF6C730F, and so does WinRAR.

Good catch. I submitted a correction and it's pending in the queue.

Wonderful 360 degree job. Even more its open source nature.

I was awaiting for years to see this version translated someday.  Finally this day has come!  Thanks to all the people who worked in this one!

An inverse version of this would be interesting to see - that is, an attempt to port the MSX changes to the NES ROM. Obviously the graphics would lose some detail in the conversion, but the palette changes may be possible.

Outstanding news I have been quite interested in the MXS port since I learned about it many years ago, many thanks!

Agree, if nothing else new nes sprites to at least partially capture the designs msx version.
