List of Co-op / Multiplayer hacks

Thank you for the answer, seem to be quite a challenging hobby that fits experienced hackers only.
I wish someone would make tools to make particular hacks easier.

I would also like to add co op to more games. Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) and The Legend of Zelda comes to mind.

But I have only begun to understand assembly and although I've made some hacks I'm still very much dependent on more experienced hackers for help.


The NES used a modified 6502 processor and most games were written in Assembly.
If the source code is available and you understand the programming language you will be able to work miracles.

A lot of the NES games have been disassembled by the likes of Cyneprepou4uk and are available on github.

Well, obviously many games could use such hack, can make a wishlist of my own (from platformers megaman, kickmaster, ninja gaiden, castlevania, whatever, and to even simpler games like pacman or defender II or road fighter or...or...)
We have no lack of wishlists, we do need more such hacks

Russians especially seem to be good at this, one is famous here for his coop hacks, now this one for dissassembly - and he seems to have good youtube channel with all the tips and tricks, it's good I'm native russian speaker, heh

Well, I always thought Ice Climber Mario (2P and 4P) where not done...carefully enough so decided to do my thing at romfixing

1. Made elevators to look like actual Super Mario elevators - only in snowy version.
2. Made slippery platofroms to look like actual frozen platforms from Mario Bros.
3. Made much better crab-hit animation.

Don't know how to do those things in "patch" versions, so just roms for now for my own fun, my big pixel art experience comes in handy
Might do more improvements, who knows, but it's already much more fun to play.

Have to say editing roms is much fun. Before only made my version of western-pieces russian Xiangqi (chinese chess) though never published.

Hey DoomJedi! Just to let you know man, you can easily generate a .ips (common hack format) using "Lunar IPS" from the same fella who made Lunar Magic. All you do is compare a "clean" unedited rom to your hacked rom, and Lunar IPS automatically generates the file. It can then be used to apply that same patch to any clean rom of the same game, so long as things like CRC32 hash match up of course.

Thanks, just tried it, you can try it to (this is to patch the coop 2P and 4P ice climber mario versions, not the original ice climber rom).
Gimme some feedback (and backup first) Who knows, might motivate me with more edits now that I know how to make ips patches.

I would love to see someone hack Super Tennis and unlock 4 player doubles. You can only get 2 vs computer. Or 1 and computer vs 2 and computer. Why that was never done in the first place  I'll never know.

Because the 4 player peripheral didn't exist when it came out.

I see mario 64 split screen.

But there was also a 2 player co op Mario 64 where the camera would zoom out. I really preferred that one. Haven't been able to find it for years, anyone have it?

Is there a detailed guide on how to get Ocarina of Time 2player/4player to work? The Youtube video and readme files have basically nothing. I found what I think is the proper "debug" ROM, Project 64, I used ppf-o-matic3. Project 64 just crashes when I try to run it vs. other ROMS that work fine.

Mr. Brocoli's Mods (he's a BEAST)

• Super Mario Sunshine Splitscreen - GCN
• Wario World Splitscreen (Alpha) - GCN
• Super Mario Galaxy Splitscreen (SMG2 is in BETA) - Wii
• Mr. Brocoli Man also has a few other games (Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom/SMG2) that are WIP so beware!

PikHackers's Mods (really good)

• Pikmin 2 Splitscreen (4P) and a ton of other great hacks! - GCN

Epicwade's Mods (yessir)

A couple New Super Mario Bros. hacks though that is already 4P. These are all very charming and it's obvious the amount of love that went into each. Pikmin 2 splitscreen is fantastic, my brothers and I have been screaming at one another playing it
