IcePenguin

It's a bit chilly out.  Everyone likes snow and ice, right?  :P  This isn't fully complete, but just an experiment for some possible new environments.  It's not implemented in the game, but maybe eventually!  When walking on the ice, you'll slide as you would expect from walking on ice.

Here is a preview video:

I'd like my summer back, please. :P What kind of person prefers ice and snow, Ice...Penguin.. oh.

Anyway, it's looking good and sparks my imagination: What kind of island might this be? Does it have high mountains with snowy peaks? Does it have different weather zones? Does it feature different seasons (like in Oracles of Seasons)? Is it generally set in a colder region?

On second thought, if climate change has taught us anything: Ice is a actually good thing. And the sliding might make for some interesting puzzles (Chip's Challenge, anyone?).

Well, nothing is finalized, yet.  This was just an experiment of sorts.  I feel that if this type of environment is added, I'd want to also include new enemies that could live in these conditions - instead of just inserting already existing enemies from LA.  Learning the AI is on my to-do list, and it'd be a dream to accomplish something like that.  :)

As for how it would be implemented, I think a whole frozen island would be cool.  How about 8 water/ice dungeons?  Ha ha.  ;)

A Zelda game set in a completely frozen world would be a *ahem* fresh concept indeed. In all seriousness: That does sound kinda intriguing.

Looks great IcePenguin! I might be nice to look at some tilesets/chipsets from Oracle of Seasons for some inspiration ^_^

Looking over this thread I must say I am excited to see this project happening and am looking forward to it's completion. Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game and one of my top three games of all time. The screenshots look great, IcePenguin.

It could be a storyline thing too. Link awakens but the dream world magically continues to exist without him, yet without the warmth of his mind the island gets really cold.. Only a thought..

I'm currently playing Link's Awakening at the moment, and this hack looks very interesting. I like the idea of playing as Marin. :)

Just out of curiosity, how is this hack going? I'm eagerly awaiting the day I can give this hack a shot. :)

That's actually a really interesting idea.
You could even repurpose / add some snow and ice themed items.
Food for thought.

Agreed. It would be a plausible story line too. Link wakes up, yet the island remains but without the warmth of Link's mind, the island grows cold. So Marin goes looking for a way to reach out to Link, knowing that his departure has something to do with the cold, but not knowing why or realizing she and the whole of the island is a magical dream world...

IcePenguin

I like your story premise, it would work really well!  :)

Here is a small update.  The hack is still in progress, and it will be finished eventually.  Expanded the shop to carry more items.

Looks really nice.
How is it going IcePenguin, any news for the last months? :woot!:

Maybe a volcano and hot springs area where the locals and animals are holed up, and somehow related to the eternal winter?

A lot of progress has been made since last time.  Lots of cool things.  :)  Most things will remain a surprise, but here is a small bit.  Implemented Hero Mode into the game.  It won't be a separate patch.  Just press select on a new file to enable it.  A new icon will show.

Agreed! This is looking better every time you show it Ice. Are you going to do beta-testing at all?

IcePenguin

Thanks for the comments!  :)  Eventually there will be testing, but not sure how/when.  The project is quite large in scale and I'm not entirely sure how I'd manage such an endeavor.  I'm open to ideas about that, as I'm sure there are others more experienced with it.

Also, I could use some feedback on a certain thing.  There is currently an item swapping mechanic, but I'm not sure what the best functionality would be.  Right now, if you hold SELECT + A, it will swap the item at the cursor position (in the menu) with the currently equipped item in slot A.  Same with SELECT + B.  (except with the B slot)

The limitation to that is you can only have 1 item on hotkey that can be assigned to either A or B.  It is already quite effective and useful, but I feel perhaps there could be a better functionality.  I've considered doing some kind of item cycle, but if anyone has a good idea they would like to share, I would love to hear them!
