Chrono Trigger Text Editor help

I'm sorry if this is obvious to everyone else, but I searched briefly for a tutorial and didn't find one. I started editing text in Chrono Trigger using the text editor. Here is what I put in (for now I'll ignore that it says ö is an invalid character, I can figure out how to fix that later):

But if I save to the rom and check it in the game, it looks like this:

While the "getting started" info does say you can use this for translating, and it does say it has support for some European characters, it doesn't say to change anything when compressing or anything else, if you are translating. At the same time, is this problem even related to the Swedish, because it looks like it's still reading English from somewhere... Sorry about this, but could someone help me? Thanks!

danke

Try writing the line without the special characters, and see if that helps. It might be a compression issue when it encounters special characters.

Ugh... I replaced all ö's and now it gives a new error saying ä's are not supported either...
Edit: I replaced ä's too and now it says å's are also not supported. Gahh!!

It is even doing this on a short sentence that doesn't have any special characters, so maybe it's because special characters exist at all.

danke

Might be easier to start a new project/script, and test out what is supported and what isn't, rather than batch editing your translated script.

The font in Chrono Trigger doesn't contain the problem characters, so that will have to be addressed. The main font is at 3F2060, and the item font is at 3F8E60.

I'm not sure if the Chrono Texteditor will be able to support these new characters, but Temporal Flux will.

For this game i have tools for translation any language with special characters, give me yout email to pm are you send this tools !!!

Well, it's easy to edit in this program so we started right away, but it seems I'll have to edit in the special characters sooner than I thought.

>Mauron
Thanks! Unfortunately I tried using Temporal Flux just now and it crashes as soon as I try to open a rom. I can't even actually open the rom, it crashes with the browsing window still open. Probably it's because I'm running Crossover, I don't have a Windows.

Okay, I PM'd you! Thanks!

Flux requires the .NET Framework to run.  To my knowledge, even Mono does not support all the features Flux uses, so it will pretty much only run on Windows.

It's probably a good idea to run MoMa so you know where you stand with Mono compatibility. It's usually pretty simple to ensure compatibility. Even with those pInvokes, you can typically find an alternative of some kind.

It seems so... but it's not like I can buy a new computer only for this stuff... The other group members either also have macs or don't want to attempt to start learning any part of game hacking.

>Nightcrawler
Sorry, I don't know what a pInvoke is (I'm really new to all of this stuff and don't have much knowledge about anything at all), but I just kind of download programs and see if they work or not.

Mauron

Nightcrawler's comment was to Geiger.

Unless you can find a way around the Chrono Trigger Texteditor character limitations, you may need to dump and reinsert the script for this to work.

A pain when there are tools for the game, but a good lesson for the future.

kringlur:  Just confirming what you already know.  Not suggesting you change anything.

so you know where you stand with Mono compatibility.

I also don't care if it runs on Mono.  I target Windows and use the features that best suit my program.  Other platforms are beyond the scope.  When the source for v4.0 gets released (provided I can ever get the bloody thing finished), someone else is welcome to port it to other platforms.

But I did check Moma out of curiosity.  Seems Mono does not support some portion of the parallel processing library nor type equality, oddly.  Definitely not interested in giving up the benefits of either of those.

Okay, sorry for being confused. But I can't simply dump, translate, and re-insert and it works right? Wouldn't I have to repoint lines and stuff myself? At least, that is my impression...?

I remember editing text in Chrono Trigger years ago and having lots of bugs just like the ones you mention here (without adding any special characters in it).
I'd suggest you to try using both headered and unheadered rom and see if text editing leads to same kind of results. I've no idea whether this is the reason for the glitches or not but try it if you haven't yet.
Pokemon Dark Energy is a rom hack based on Pokemon Silver. Like most pokemon hacks, it retains the pokemon stylish gameplay but has plenty of elements from other RPGs as well. You'd better check it out!

If you're serious about this project, I'm willing to do the hacking part. This is a project we've had since I was in GCT.

Let me know if you're interested.

What about this?

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/source/chronotools.html

I know Bisqwit had some utilities and other neat add-ons.  Not sure if this would be of any help.
'We have to find some way to incorporate the general civilians in the plot.'

'We'll kill off children in the Juuban district with an infection where they cough up blood and are found hanging themselves from cherry blossom trees.'

kringlur

>Miksy91
I can try that, but first I'll wait to see if C_CliFF is okay with working with us, because that simplifies it all. If not then I have to try everything : P

>justin3009
I saw those but I'm too dumb to understand it all so I was going to get one of the translators to maybe help me figure it out. But again, if C_CliFF can work with us then hopefully I don't have to worry anymore, at least not unless we end up doing another game afterwards.

I do not know it to actually be true, but I have been told that the tools by Bisqwit do not work very well, which was why I added translation to Flux (I had previously been of a favorable impression).

Still, it would not hurt to try.  I seem to recall Bisqwit tools were specifically designed for non-English translations.  So if they work, I would expect them to have little problem with your special characters.

kringlur I sent you an e-mail for the tools.

I prepared a pack ready to translate from English to your language, However you can not put that 11 accented character only.
