Since the ending was never done for this game, I figured I'd just do a quick redo for the small amount of text present and add in the logo for the official movie on the title screen. I was expecting a little more for the ending, but I guess that just reflects the quality of the game.

On the planet "Agarna" the two countries of "Uldas" and "Edia" have their eyes set on Vizolium and are competing over it. The man pulling the strings behind the scenes seems to be a Professor "Wattsman". Head there immediately and settle the incident!

「さいてー」
"Man, this sucks."

「ドジ」
"Moron."

「まぬけ」
"Blockhead".

The last two are simply "Please select" and "Select/Register".

Not surprising it was never done.
Nobody confirmed it was possible to pass level 2 until years after Ballz stopped caring. :)

I believe the game has multiple endings depending on the time spent playing. Some sites claim it's the number of bullets you use. I never bothered to do it myself until I knew exactly how to unlock each ending.

Jedi QuestMaster

It's better not be based on time! :o Because I used an FAQ & constantly used emulator pausing on the mazes & still had the bad ending.

Yeah, there's one other ending and my money's on bullets. I'll take a look at RAM and see if it keeps track of bullets or time.

Edit:

My bad, there are 4 other endings that seem to be picked based on values in $840F-840C.

"Well done. As a present, I'm giving you guys a bonus and a few extra days off."

"That's it! Apparently I can't rely on you two for this job. Come back immediately!"

シマツショをテイシュツしたらただちにヘンキョウワクセイのチョウサにむかえ! (I had to type this one out because I wasn't sure about the stupid katakana stuffs)
After you submit a written apology, I want you immediately on assignment. You two are to research distant planets!

"That's it, that's it! You two are fired! I never want to see your faces again. You two are only fit to be female pro wrestlers."

Thank you DS. Now I just need to organize the text and get that title screen done.

Which ending you get depends on whether A is greater than or equal to 32, 1E,  0F or 05. For my first playthrough A is 02, but I have no idea what that's supposed to represent and I'm not sure I feel like putting in the effort to figure it out when I can just do a quick cheat to test everything.

Oh yeah, I remember reading about that.  So someone eventually figured it out?

Pretty sure I sent an email with this to the guy who said no one could beat it, but here are scans of a strategy guide for the game.

I believe it's in Cantonese?

PS: the actual movie Project Eden owns.  Really well made flick.

That looks like Japanese to me. Anyone want to skip ahead to the end and see what it says about the different endings?

Well, I guess all asian languages look alike to me.

For the record, the guy on Videogameden has an actual Japanese guidebook for the game. I emailed him a while asking him if it was ok I use his manual scans as a base for photoshopped english manuals, but he never got back to me.

Sorry about the thread necromancy, but I figure some people might want to know the solution to this mystery.  Yes, the ending you get is entirely dependent on your shooting skills, specifically your accuracy.  The two-byte block at $07D6 tracks the number of bullets you fire and the two-byte block at $07D8 tracks the number of times that enemies have been hit by bullets.  At the end of the game (I assume, I don't know nearly enough about hacking to confirm that this is the case), $07D8 is divided by $07D6 and the result multiplied by 100 to give an accuracy percentage.  The values given by Pennywise are threshold percentages; 50% or greater accuracy gives you the best ending, 30% or greater accuracy gives you the next-best ending, and so on.

Thanks, Rob!  Even though I have yet to delve into this game, I love that kind of stuff, and love to see old mysteries in obscure games solved.

I wonder if it's possible to overflow the bullet counter, either directly (set a RAM value, get a rollover) or in gameplay?  Sort of a reverse Galaga, for those who know the trick to getting 200% accuracy in that game...

Pennywise

Thanks for the info. I'm somewhat tempted to update the read me now.
