2021 Sonic Hacking Contest - Update
28 July 2021 7:59PM EST - Update by RadioTails
It’s time for an update regarding this year’s Sonic Hacking Contest. Please see the 2021 information page for more details: https://shc.zone/2021.html
There’s just a few months away before the deadlines. The website should be updated and available for submissions by August. This will allow at least one month’s window of submissions to the Contest and Expo. Another update will be made when the site is available. Please prepare your entries so that you are ready to go as soon as the site goes up, and remember, there is an updates period too (this does not include the Expo since they are not being judged).
A few things have been clarified regarding 2D PC entries and what is part of the 2D PC section. This includes the status of Sonic 3 A.I.R submissions as there have been some people asking about entering those.
Without saying much for now, something will be introduced this year that hasn’t been included in any Contest or Expo before. More details will be announced near the time.
If you have any questions, use the SHC Contact US Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfVsJ8uyZiKhrhLwjIhVUmzpp3rPplURCHzJ4CfoQqz3tzYEQ/viewform
And remember, anything can be submitted to the Contest or Expo, providing it meets the criteria, for example, including small demos of one or more levels.
Super Mario Bros. 8 is here! (with a little bit of delay)
26 July 2021 6:07PM EST - Update by CryinOnion
With a little bit of delay, here is Super Mario Bros. 8!
This project has its origins in the 90’s, when it was usual to find bootleg consoles and cartridges of the old NES in small bazaars. The most popular of course, were those starring the Nintendo mascot, which led to a bunch of bizarre pseudo-sequels that exceded about twenty of them.
The vast majority of this bootleg games were actually hacks of games from reputable companies that bore some resemblance to the plumber. And of all those games, the best remembered was Super Bros. 8, which is actually a hack of Don Doko Don 2 modifying only the essential.
As the original game is pretty damn good, and even its authors admitted that they were inspired by the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, it’s not surprising that the author decided to use it as a base to create a “reimagining” of Super Bros. 8, which makes it feel like some kind of collaboration between Taito and Nintendo.
If you want to take a look at the game first, you can click on “relevant link”, where you'’ll find a short video introducing it (English subs available).
Below the video in the description you can have exclusive access to the “Onion’s Cut”, a patch that restores a small detail that had to be removed from the final version for violating the explicit content policy of the website, and some covers for the game created with original artwork from friends and enthusiastic fans.
And that is all. As you already imagine, romhacking is not very different from cooking: The greatest compliment you can receive is to see how people enjoy your meals, so “bon apetite”!
Final Fantasy Adventure Gender Swapped
23 July 2021 9:30PM EST - Update by xenophile
In Final Fantasy Adventure (the first game of the incredible Mana series) you take on the role of a warrior fighting against an evil empire. Become a Gemma Knight and wield the legendary Mana Sword. This is no quest for some boy.
At start of Final Fantasy Adventure, two very similar characters see their paths diverge. One destined to greatness, the other to follow the arc of an NPC. FFA Gender Swap switches who answers the call to adventure, and who assumes the role of NPC.
FFA Gender Swap has been called “a really interesting little twist”. Whether you are looking for a main character you see yourself in, want to try a different role, or just looking for a great way to revisit the world of Mana you owe it to yourself to give this a try!
NoMoneyRanger and Mr. X Challenge You to a New Quest… with a Gaiden…
20 July 2021 3:28PM EST - Update by eskayelle
After numerous years and even more battles, the Shredder has been defeated… perhaps for good?
To celebrate, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles head down to sunny SoCal for some R & R. But… there’s no rest for the weary as our heroes are ambushed by a faction they’ve never encountered before. Raph, Don, and Mikey are kidnapped, leaving Leo wounded and the only turtle outside captivity.
Meanwhile, gang wars and riots have been breaking out across everyone’s favorite Sega city. Mr. X has killed off his previous threats and fortified his stronghold, and he challenges any and all vigilantes to try to oppose him.
With a team of unlikely allies, Leo and his new “friends” must use every ounce of their strength and courage to rescue his brothers and stop the flames of chaos from engulfing the city and spreading beyond it.
The artistic vision of NMR and the code monkeying of Double Z bring together TMNT Gaiden, a grittier take on previous SoR2 / TMNT mash-ups, with a cast of fan favorites popping straight out of the the SNES hit TMNT: Tournament Fighters.
Bust through the Syndicate with the following foursome:
- Leonardo: Leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the only one to escape the joint ambush attack by the Syndicate and an unknown faction. Shell shock indeed! With anger and vengeance flowing through his shell, Leo will do whatever it takes to avenge and rescue his brothers. To fight this new enemy, it’ll take not only leadership skills and dual katana swords, but courage, friendship, and Bare Knuckles too!
- Aska: A young female ninja master from the West Foot Clan. Aska arrived in time to stop Leo from being kidnapped but was too late to save the others. Her father and leader of the clan, Shiro, is rumored to be the younger step-brother of Shredder. Their purpose is to keep peace and order with the East Foot Clan in times of conflict. Upon hearing rumors of the East Foot Clan being revived, Aska sets out to join her new friend Leo to hunt down the person allegedly responsible for bringing the East Foot back: Shredder’s daughter Karai!
- Rat King: After waking from a heavy nap, the Rat King notices all of his sewer rat friends are dead. It turns out their last shipment of California Cheese was tainted with poison by the Syndicate. Not cool! Learning of the Syndicate’s origins and whereabouts, he scurries to California to rendezvous with Leo. Despite their previous conflicts, the Rat King is willing to cast aside his differences in order to avenge his fallen rat friends and take down this common enemy.
- Wingnut: Every town needs a hero, and Wingnut considers himself as one to people of Hollywood. Sadly, no one ever acknowledges his deeds and heroics. Despite being a bat-mutant with flying abilities, he developed a fear of heights from a recent flight incident. While learning that Leo and his new teammates were in need of a fourth member, Wingnut volunteers himself without concern for danger. He’ll do his best to prove his worth as a hero, definitely bust some heads in the process, and perhaps overcome his fear of heights.
With new animations, heroes, and sounds, get ready for a whole new TMNT experience!

Huge update for the voice hack of Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden!
16 July 2021 8:08AM EST - Update by Kanon
The recent voice hack for Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden has received a new update with lots of improvements!
The patch, previously known as “voice changes” has been renamed to “New Voices” to better reflect the modifications made to the game. While the previous version only swapped some voices for others (like removing Son Gohan’s Kame Hame Ha, to make room for his voice for Masenkō) due to limitations in the sound driver, this new version bypasses that limitation, allowing the addition of voices without the need to remove anything.
The cumulative changes now include new voices for almost every character: Gohan now says “Masenko” (added in the previous version) AND “Kame Hame Ha” (restored), Piccolo adds “Gekiretsu Kodan” while keeping the “Makankōsappō“, Vegeta now says both “Final Flash” AND “Big Bang Attack“, just like Trunks with “Burning Attack” and “Finish Buster“. Cell keeps his “Kame Hame Ha” voice and the grunt used for Makankōsappō is restored. Rikum screams “Rikum Eraser Gun!” when performing this attack, and Krilin joins the Kame Hame Ha club, getting his own voice when performing the trademark attack of the Turtle School.
A very interesting case is the changes made for Android 18. She gets what could almost be described as make over: Instead of her boring “Sora!” scream, now she has two interesting choices when performing her special attacks. One is the phrase “Uttoshine!“, lifted from Super Sonic Warriors for GBA, and the other is “Jā ne, bye“, her famous line from the original manga and anime (in the scene when she first kisses Krilin), also used for attacks in Dragonball Fighterz.
And finally, Freezer gets and additional voice, also from the source material and Dragonball Fighterz: “Ima sugu damara sete yaru zo” (”I’ll have you shut up now” a reference to chapter 322 of the manga, and episode 99 of the anime)
As a bonus, there is also a small surprise in the intro, reminiscent of SNES’ DB Super Butoden.
Download the patch HERE and check the new voices!

Mega Man 7 Refit Gets "Custom Fit" Update
12 July 2021 8:17PM EST - Update by Josephine Lithius
Remember that fun little ROM hack for Mega Man 7? The one that was released three years ago and made the game play a little more like the older games in the series? Well, it finally got an update, and it’s a doozy!
Josephine Lithius (formerly “Joseph Collins”) decided it was high time to stop putting off something very important. Going forward, it’s been decided that… the Life and Weapon Energy Capsules, and even the 1ups, should look like they do in the older games!
In all seriousness, on top of some more altered graphics and changed text strings, this version also makes a big change to the damage data tables. Inspired by the older games, the Charged Mega Buster Shot has been made a tiny bit more powerful, doing 3 damage to normal enemies instead of 2! But wait, there’s more!
Thanks to user interest, the main patch now comes with optional customization patches for all the different tweaks and features available! That means players now have the option of full control over what modifications they make to their game! Like the faster Charge Shot but not the new title screen? Think the shorter I-frames and Rush’s invulnerability make the game too easy? Pick and choose to your heart’s content! The mini-patches even work with US-based ROM hacks! This means that it’s possible to have a better Charge Shot in “Mega Man 7 Restored”, or even make the game more merciful with longer I-frames and “Nerfed Spikes”! Wow!!
For fans of Mega Man 7 looking for something new, or fans of “Refit” looking for some true customization options, this update is for you!
German translation patch for Getsu Fuuma Den (NES)
12 July 2021 11:23AM EST - Update by TanaElmsley
There are situations in life when you prefer to dip your toes into something and test the waters first, and then there are situations when you just plunge in head first without truly knowing what you are getting into. This translation patch for the Famicom/NES action RPG Getsu Fuuma Den definitely is a case of the latter.
Tana Elmsley had done a translation of Getsu Fuuma Den on paper for a friend who wanted to play the game and somehow or other she found her way to ROMhacking.net to see if someone wanted to use the translation to write a German translation patch. Feldherren kindly offered her help and without knowing what she was getting into Tana started working on the patch. Turns out that about three weeks after having visited ROMhacking.net for the first time she can now proudly present her first translation patch: a German version of Getsu Fuuma Den.
The patch is a new translation of the Japanese text including all menus and graphics. References that wouldn’t be understood by non-Japanese players were localized. Otherwise the translation tries to stay as true to the original as possible and also keeps the NPCs’ somewhat shrewd humor intact. The readme is available in both German and English.
Concerning the hacking this project would hardly have been possible without Nebulous Translations who allowed the use and modification of the development tools they had written for their earlier English patch for the same game. Tana Elmsley tweaked the password function but otherwise no changes were made to those tools and they were a great help.
The author is happy to make Getsu Fuuma Den available to a wider audience and hopes that many more people may enjoy this old little gem of a game. If you are interested in Japanese mythology or simply want to try out a somewhat different action RPG you should definitely give this one a shot. After all, you can hardly go wrong with a Famicom/NES game proudly bearing the Konami trademark!
Tana had a lot of fun working on the patch and learned much more than she had hoped for. Currently she is helping Pennywise with (re-)translating the Nekketsu games but doesn’t have any bigger project of her own planned for now. She might, however, translate other (Super) Famicom games she takes a fancy to, in the future.
