Suikogaiden Vol.2: Duel at Crystal Valley English Translation Released

07 September 2013 5:48AM EST - Update by Raww Le Klueze

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Six months after the release of the patch for Vol.1: Swordsman of Harmonia, here comes the patch for Vol.2: Duel at Crystal Valley.

Suikogaiden Vol.2 is a Visual Novel spin-off to the Suikoden series and takes place about 6 months after the end of Suikoden II, featuring the continued adventures of the hero from Vol.1: Nash Latkje.

Fans of the series won’t want to miss out on this chance to see what some characters from Suikoden II did right after the Dunan Unification War, and fans of Vol.1 will want to see the continued misadventures of Nash.

The patch was created by old and new members of the Suikogaiden Translation Project, this time led by Raww Le Klueze with significant help from Kestrel, Graeme Howard and Magi on the translation side and Pokeytax on the coding side.

Bionic Commando Retranslation Complete

01 September 2013 4:15PM EST - Update by Pennywise

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Let us go then, you and I,

When the evening is spread out against the sky

We shall face the darkness

Summer is at an end and we shall face the sadness

The Nazis rule the world

Our lives now unfurled

But an unexpected surprise in this doomed crescendo

A new ray of hope in the Bionic Commando

This is a story of a time long ago A time of myth and legend

When the evil nazis were petty and cruel

And they plagued mankind with suffering

Only one man dared to challenge their power

The Bionic Commando

The Bionic Commando possessed an ability the world had

never seen an ability surpassed only by the strength of his heart

He journeyed the Earth battling the minions of the wicked Weissman

The all-powerful Fuhrer of the Nazis

But wherever there was evil

Wherever an innocent would suffer

There would be the Bionic Commando

This has been a game that’s been a dream project for retranslation just because of its popularity and subject matter. However, there was a minor roadblock that prevented it from happening for a short time. The storage of the script used what is called Pascal strings where no end control codes are used and instead a byte is used setting the length of a string and thus when to stop. This method is usually not handled by generic script tools and we needed a custom solution. Fortunately, a good friend of ours and excellent programmer and hacker, Esperknight, extracted the script and work got started. A help wanted ad on RHDN(A favorite feature for the best site and community on the internet) was put up and almost immediately contact was made with an excellent translator. Many a translator, associates and friends haven been found through the help wanted ads over the years and this development comes as no surprise. catfoodmoney diligently translated the script and work resumed on the project. First thing that needed to be done was to hack the big 16×16 font down into a much nicer 8×8 font, that was a piece of cake. Because the game used the big font and plenty of kanji, there was plenty of space leftover when the font was replaced which was used to relocate part of the script. We ended up with over twice the physical space for the translation and more than enough room for a quality translation. Also the game had a few limitations that were very annoying. The game was capable of multiple screens of text per text string, but you first had to fill the screen before it would be cleared. A control code was added so that the screen could be cleared anytime. Also because of the Pascal strings, the text was limited to #$FF hex bytes which equates to 255 characters. This limitation did not work with some of the longer strings and something had to be done. So the Pascal strings were replaced with a simple end control code and the limitation overcome. Shoutouts go to FlashPV for the really cool title screen and Carnivol for being a diligent tester.

FF4kster v0.4

29 August 2013 1:40PM EST - Update by pinkpuff

Utilities News - RHDN Project Page

FF4kster, the all-in-one editor for Final Fantasy 4, has finally received a large update. Some major bugs were fixed and some significant components have been added:

The new monster editor allows you to change the details of individual monsters, including not only their HP, Exp, Gil values, battle stats, and elemental and other special properties, but also their item drops, and even their AI behaviour and reaction scripts.

In addition, there is now a formation editor which allows you to edit particular battles, including what groups of monsters are fought, as well as various other properties such as whether you can flee from the fight or not, or whether you will get game over from losing the fight or not.

Finally, the new encounters editor allows you to manipulate what groups of monsters you can randomly encounter in what areas.

Kai no Bouken / The Quest of Ki English Translation & Sprite Hack Released!

27 August 2013 9:23AM EST - Update by Zynk Oxhyde

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Zynk Oxhyde has completed the English translation hack of the obscure game sequel, or rather prologue, of The Tower of Druaga for the NES.

Back in 2001, this hack was first conceived by an unknown romhacking group but have lost interest, leaving Tomato, a professional videogame translator, & his translated script of the game. Since then, Tomato left his script in the Abandoned projects section of RHDN.

On May 2013, Zynk happened to wander into the Abandoned section in search of a project to do. The file, which contained the English script, was accompanied by garbled texts (of which might have been the Japanese text with ANSI to Unicode contradictions), in spite of that, the English texts were spared. Zynk announced this to the RHDN forum, which caught Tomato’s attention & gave Zynk permission to use his script. However, not all of the script were translated which led Zynk to translate the rest of it by context.

After 3 months, the translation was completed but revisions were still made in lieu with Zynk’s other plans for this hack, a player sprite edit. Zynk thought that the game’s graphics are a bit bland especially the player’s character, Ki. Ki’s sprite lacks detail in comparison with box-art & official images of her. In addition to that, Zynk also edited the treasure box items to look like those from The Tower of Druaga. Sprite editing was done after a few weeks.

After all that, the patch for the translation was released with the sprite hack also released separately. However, after the hacks were approved, the files were unusable because of URL conflicts. With KingMike’s aid, the direct link URLs were easily fixed!

In conclusion, the hacks are now readily available for the public!

New Secret of Evermore balance patch

22 August 2013 11:25PM EST - Update by Ninakoru

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

A new version of the balance patch has been released (v1.1), enhancing the experience, with an alchemy overhaul, most exploits covered, some known bugs fixed, and many extra details to make the Secret of Evermore experience more rewarding.

This new version has been also adapted for the Spanish version of the game, and there’s a “hard mode” for both Spanish and U.S. versions. Is still compatible with the multiplayer patch (US only though).

The patch is a good reason to revisit this SNES masterpiece.

Zelda3 HP hack

17 August 2013 8:59PM EST - Update by puzzledude

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

This HP hack is intended for rookies, who just don’t have the skill to play (or finish) Zelda3 hacks. You can apply the patch to original ALTTP or any Zelda3 hack which has no header (patching to any headered ROM will corrupt it, without the possibility to fix it again).

You can choose between 10 or 20 heart containers, Armor3, the brand new “fire sword” and the new “super sword”. The first one has the power to burn enemies with the spin attack (if the sword is level 3 or 4), the second one makes level-1, 2, 3 swords stronger, while adding the fire effect to all swords, if you use the spin attack. However, if you use the stab attack (hold the sword and walk into the enemy) they will freeze.

The HP hack was released specially because of the many complaints of Parallel Worlds being too frustrating and Goddess of Wisdom being too difficult; while Parallel Remodel (which is quite easy in my eyes and fairly easy according to majority of players) has turned someone into a “frothing madman”.

So if you are a 12 year old kid, an ultra rookie, a Zelda3 newbie, or just want to have fun while playing, this is the hack for you.
