FCEUX 2.2.2 released!

25 September 2013 4:42PM EST - Update by AnS

Utilities News - RHDN Project Page

The recent release of the most powerful NES emulator has brought some new features useful for romhacking.

First, the built-in Hex Editor got a new feature called “Highlight Activity”, which helps monitoring memory changes (e.g. when you’re comparing two savestates, searching for a certain discrepancy).

Also, remember that annoying quirk of all known NES Debuggers, where you couldn’t scroll the disassembly up by whole instruction? That’s because 6502 instructions have variable len… ok, forget it.

More importantly, Symbolic Debugging finally works like it should have been working all these years since FCEUXDSP. Basically, you right-click any address and label it with a name. From this point FCEUX will substitute the address with the name everywhere: in disassembly listings, in trace logs, in Hex Editor window caption. This immensely helps reverse-engineering games.

Usually, when beginning a new hacking project, you stumble upon walls of incomprehensible assembly, and you start searching for certain memory addresses which could lead you to the necessary part of the code. Sometimes it’s enough to set a breakpoint onto a visual variable (like sprite coordinates/tiles map/etc), but more often you have to dig through the game, documenting data structures (in a text file) and figuring out the code control flow. Well, now you can forget Notepad and use Symbolic Debugging. Even when you barely understand why e.g. this certain code branches over there, right-click the address and call it something semi-definite, like “GotoHereIfVerticalCoord=1F“, then keep reading and doing the same to the following lines - soon you’ll notice you understand the situation better and better. Because you’re actually restoring a part of the source code of the game, without diving deeper than necessary, only looking at things relevant to your current needs.

For more info, see updated docs on FCEUX Debugger here.

Other debugging tools (Trace Logger, PPU Viewer, Code/Data Logger) were also improved in this new version. Read the whole changelog here.

Oriental Blue Translation Released

16 September 2013 4:33AM EST - Update by Kingcom

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

The Romhacking Aerie has released a full translation for the GBA game Oriental Blue.

Oriental Blue is an RPG that’s part of the popular Tengai series, also known as Far East of Eden to most (see the Readme for details on that). It features non-linear gameplay, an intelligent battle system with a unique magic system, and near endless replayability due to countless minor and major choices that you knowingly or unknowingly make.

Check out the following link for a gameplay video that the group released a few months ago and then head right over to the project page and treat yourself to a download!

PS2 Shin Master of Monsters Final EX Project started

11 September 2013 8:33PM EST - Update by Nebelwurfer HQ

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

You can only re-fight WWII so many times, before it gets boring.

Nebelwurfer HQ’s next project is translating Shin Master of Monsters Final EX, a recent Fantasy themed Strategic game from Japan. In it, a Magician progresses through a series of battle maps while an overall story is gradually revealed. The key to the game is obtaining a force of Monsters that can be summoned onto the battlefield to fight. Different monster types can be recruited depending on the map square where the army camps between battles.

The main character and his monster army will gain experience and can evolve up to more formidable monster types over time. Also humanoid type monsters can be equipped with weapons, armor, and an item.

Thus far only the Tutorial maps and a handful of Campaign scenarios have been translated. However, this is sufficient to give you a feel for the game and follow-up patches will be released periodically as the translator progresses in the game.

There are 11 playable characters in the game, each with their own dialog trees. This translation will focus on the Soldier character. Perhaps others will step forward to translate the other character’s dialog trees.

Suikoden Card Stories English Translation Released

07 September 2013 9:49AM EST - Update by Pokeytax

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

As an bonus for die-hard Suikoden fans, and to celebrate the release of Suikogaiden Vol. 2, Suikoden Card Stories has been fully translated into English as well.

Suikoden Card Stories is a CCG-style RPG for the Game Boy Advance. Players assemble a deck of Suikoden II characters and duel their opponents on missions and locations related to the Suikoden II plot. The storyline is an abridged version of Suikoden II’s with a few small additions and differences.

This is a side project by one of the non-translators on the Suikogaiden team; players shouldn’t expect the same level of quality and polish. But this is a fun experience for Suikoden fanatics who can live with card game mechanics, and a fairly novel if limited RPG in its own right.

Don’t forget to check out Suikogaiden Vol. 1 & II!

Very observant fans may remember seeing this translation patch before. This is a fully repaired version of that translation, with many bug fixes, some script improvements, all segments accessible, and the restoration of some dummied content.
