Golvellius (MSX) English Translation Patch Version 1.0 Released on April 21, 2008 By Novalia Spirit Contact information: novaliaspirit (AIM and Hotmail) http://novaliaspirit.99k.org/ Table of contents: 1. PATCHING INSTRUCTIONS 2. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 3. CREDITS 4. LEGAL DISCLAIMER ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. PATCHING INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Extract the patch file "golvellius.ips" from the archive. 2. Get a ROM image of Golvellius. 3. Using an IPS patching program like Lunar IPS, apply the patch to the ROM. Be sure to apply the patch to a clean (unedited) ROM. If you right-click (or control-click on a Mac) the ROM and select "Properties," it should read "Size: 128 KB (131,072 bytes)." Also make sure it is the MSX game, not the MSX2 one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I do not have access to an MSX computer, are there viable alternatives? A: Yes, there actually exist emulators. Here are two of the most popular free MSX emulators on the web: 1. blueMSX: www.bluemsx.com 2. openMSX: http://openmsx.sourceforge.net Q: Why is the game screaming at me all the time? A: This is due to the fact that the Japanese version does not contain lowercase characters but DOES contain uppercase characters. Simply put, I consider more appropriate to promote characters designed by the original programmers than employing self-made characters. However, note that while I did draw some of the characters used in this translation, those were solely intended as a way to palliate the lack of appropriate punctuation symbols in the original game. Q: Why are certain words a different color? A: In the original game, Kana characters are blue, roman letters are yellow, and numbers are white. This translation preserves the original aspect of the game in that regard. Q: You alluded to a version of Golvellius that is apparently designed for the MSX2. Can you elaborate? A: There exist two remakes of the MSX version of Golvellius. The first one was designed for the Sega Master System (Mark III in Japan), while the other one was designed for the Japanese MSX2 home computer system. While the scenario and mechanics are essentially the same in all three versions, the remakes feature enhanced graphics and entirely different overworld and dungeon layouts, resulting in a different experience from game to game. Q: I played all three versions of the game, and now I want more. Suggestions? A: Luckily for those who cherish these games, there exists an MSX2 game called Super Cooks (thanks to BiFiMSX for letting me know about this game) that uses a modified MSX2 Golvellius engine. As weird as it sounds, its main feature is that it puts you in control of a Kelesis-looking cook who uses a frying pan to dispatch EVIL fruits and vegetables... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. CREDITS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BiFiMSX He not only has volunteered his time as a beta tester, but he has also written code that allowed relocalization, in the ROM, of the dialogue that is normally displayed during the ending. Had it not been for him, because of lack of space the ending would not have been so verbose. On a personal note, he has made his mark with the great interest he has shown in the project, which provided a strong and constant source of motivation. Vampier For partially testing the patch and, for the same reason mentioned above, being a source of motivation. Yy I used his YY-CHR program to locate and edit character symbols in the ROM. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.
